Weight Loss Metabolic Types...Are you eating what you should? Oct 06 2009

Hi iknowmychicken,

I agree that Jillian Michaels is talented, and I've found that the ratios she suggests for fast oxidizers (my type) really does work for me, when I'm compliant.

Regardless of people's taste or distaste for the Biggest Loser, you stated at the bottom of your original post that this was reprinted with Jillian's permission. I think a fair question to ask you is if you're officially marketing her book or any other products. How did you get permission from Jillian?

There is so much contradictory information on the Internet about nutrition and weight loss, and it's important to make informed decisions. You come across as confident and almost authoritative, and I happen to agree with you. But it's still important that people know their sources. I'm really not trying to add fuel to the fire, but to gather information that would benefit everyone reading this thread.

Hi Cole,

I agree with hkellick. Getting your foot in the door of a more business-like job will get you one step closer and get you more experience. This job doesn't have to define your career.

There are a lot of people who would kill for a stable job right now, even if you only need a high school diploma for it. Not everyone has the luxury of wondering what they want to do with their lives. Try to keep your situation in perspective.

I started making small changes that had minimal effects on my weight: drinking more water, eating more veggies: one thing at a time until they were habits. Then I made the final change to not eat processed sugar or white flour (more generally, to not eat things that had no nutritional benefit for my body), and the weight began to come off.

I use CC to check my calories about once a week.

Everyday I wake up with the goal of having a 'healthy' day.

Baby steps are in : )

Hi Minda, I think this is the healthiest strategy I've read about in a long time. Good for you, and way to go! I'm taking a similar approach. Small changes are so much easier to tolerate.

Regardless of the cause, it doesn't sound like an unhealthy thing. There are varying levels of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (hence, the reason it's a spectrum disorder), and I am on the low-end of OCD. If I tap my hand, it has to be five times, and I have to do it with both hands for symmetry. I call them fidgies, a term of endearment for fidgets.

I'm not saying you have OCD. I'm only pointing out that there are a number of things that could be causing your fidgies and using myself as an example.

Well done on the diet and exercise and don't worry about your fidgies!

At least 1000 calories. Perhaps 1500 with the naan bread. Any cumin rice? I live near a city with lots of "ethnic" food choices, and I've had to look at the butter chicken stats before. The red chicken legs sound like chicken tikka. The potato dish is common, though I don't know the name.

Edited to add: YUM.

That is interesting. My mother stayed in bed with me until I fell asleep until I was about age 7-8. I have to work to be calm and healthy as an adult, but I do think that her time spent with me helped to counteract the damage done by an alcoholic father, who was a good person nonetheless.

Hi Lisa,

There's a group here called Keeping Accountable that you can join. There are less than 30 of us there, and while it's a bit slow now, hopefully things will pick up if more people join. I check in there every day. It really helps to have to support.

I'll chime in with a "me too" as well.

My brother-in-law and his family visited over the past weekend, and I stopped counting for two days to enjoy myself. I still ate lots of fruits and veggies, but I also made them a Southern breakfast of homemade biscuits, gravy made me with butter, and thick-sliced bacon. (And a side of cantaloupe!) After one biscuit with gravy, my stomach felt like it had ten pounds of rocks in it.

I also consider it a positive that it didn't feel good. Give me a spinach and strawberry salad, please.

Motivation Tips on Calorie Counting/Meal Planning Jul 03 2009

Hi Saphrael,

It really does take a lot of time to log everything. I'm forcing myself to make time for it because it's so important to me.

You might try mypyramid.gov, enter in your stats, and see how many servings of each food group it recommends. I go by their recommendations for number of servings per group, but I count the calories here. Once you've built up a decent database of tagged items here, your logging time should be reduced.

As for a formal meal plan, I don't have any suggestions. Perhaps someone else will have better answer for you.

Good luck!

Motivation Crazy day and can't stop eating! Jul 03 2009

Would it be easier for you to ease back into your regular routine over the next two days?

Just adding more fruits and veggies to your meals in place of part of something else would go a long way to get you back on track. Exercise at half pace or half of the duration you usually do? All-or-nothing thinking is too rigid, especially, I find with dieting.

I think it's too much to ask of ourselves not to enjoy life, including food, once and a while. As long as it's the exception, I think you'll be fine!

Motivation This is confusing - ideas, anyone? Jul 03 2009

I haven't noticed that on my account. I wonder if there's something wrong with the database they use for food items. Perhaps they're tweaking it, and things are a bit screwy right now.

Any mods know anything?

Hi Rosalie,

This is perfectly normal. I quit smoking 9 months ago, so I know what those feelings are like.

The heavy feeling in your chest and the coughing are signs that your lungs are healing. This will last for a few more months but will gradually decline. My doctor told me that it takes a body about a year, sometimes longer, to return to a "non-smoking" normal.

Hang in there- it gets better, I promise. As I waited for the bus the other night, I found myself irritated by a man's second-hand smoke. But it wasn't because it made me crave a cigarette, it was because I couldn't breathe and it stunk! I thought this to be a good sign.

Be well.
