The Lounge spirochete to cyclists: I HATE YOU. I hate you so much and I hate your next 15 generations Jun 29 2008

I think that article is interesting in light of the current discussion here. It seems that here we have mostly law abiding cyclists  (according to their accounts) arguing with mostly law abiding drivers (according to their accounts).

So if that's the case, we are all likely on the same side. Yet, we are still rather inflammatory with one another.

It seems like we could all agree that there is a group of cyclists that are unlawful and unsafe. As this article so wonderfully pointed out, they annoy not only the drivers but the rest of the biking community as well.

So to all, obey the traffic laws and happy riding/driving.

In light of a CC rant regarding cyclists on the road, I thought I'd just pop in here and say that I had a lovely 50 mile ride on Sunday.

It was the first time I've gone that far in one shot and it was great. I was wiped when I was done, but man what fun!

Happy riding to all.....even though some may hate us :)

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of the advice re: hydration packs and ummm "unmentionables" comfort.

I have a more technical question for the bike experts out there. My new to me torelli frame is a steel model. I am not sure if the person who built the bike originally performed any rust prevention on it or not, but I am wondering if this might be a good idea.

Have any of you treated the inside of your tubes with a rust prevention spray? If so, would you recommend this, and what brand did you use?

Thanks!

i'm just not sure it was markenting bs. clif bar didn't advertise any of the info i gave. i got it from an independent source (one that is highly posted about on cc). i got it from the world's healthiest foods website (www.whfoods.com).

i don't tout this website as the bible, so take it for what you will. its just a database of foods that are ranked on their nutrient content.

I actualy agree with you Thhq. that's why I said from a blood standpoint, sugar is sugar. Read: from a blood glucose level, sugar is probably sugar in this case.

Rice syrup on the other hand, may be a bit different according to a few sources.

My point is that people are going to eat some sugar. In this case the bar is not a bar full of preservatives and artificial crap, with the exception of the vitamin supplements (which is no different than a multi vitamin). That was my point.

If you need a sugar fix and like the bar, great. If you don't want the sugar, stay away.

Forgot to add, the other source of sweetness is from brown rice syrup.

www.bodyandfitness.com had this to say about brown rice syrup:

"is made by adding a small amount of sprouted rice or barley to cooked brown rice. The rice is then strained and cooked, becoming a golden syrup with a butterscotch flavor. It is about half as sweet as sugar, and, as with barley malt syrup, complex carbohydrates inhibit dramatic shifts in blood sugar levels."

Apparently this syrup and barley malt syrup are "relatively slow to digest and does not result in rapid blood sugar fluctuations when eaten"

EDIT: I am not making a claim that vitamin supplemented food is better than natural sources. I am just suggesting that as far as the sugar content goes, clif bars seem to be pretty natural.

Something interesting about this food is that the high sugar comes from the evaporated cane juice. Some of you may have seen posts about the world's healthiest foods website (here). Evaporated cane juice is actually one of their listed foods as a healthier alternative to refined sugar. In this case, sugar is sugar most likely as far as your blood goes. However, in other aspects not all sugar is created equally apparently.

"Evaporated cane juice is a healthy alternative to refined sugar. While both sweetners are made from sugar cane, evaporated cane juice does not undergo the same degree of processing that refined sugar does. Therefore, unlike refined sugar, it retains more of the nutrients found in sugar cane. Cane juice is available throughout the year"

Any suggestions on hydration packs?

REI outlet has a 100 oz. pack on sale for $10 right now. Its just basically a bladder with shoulder straps. I don't mind the no frills, but I am worried it will be uncomfortable?

Anyone have one that they love?

Hey all,

Memorial day weekend was great. The boy and I went out on a 32 mile ride in the country near my parents' lake house. It was beautiful out, 60 degrees and sunny. A bit windy, but that just made things a little interesting.

I had to get new tires last week because the tires that came on the bike were pretty worn and one tore. S bought them for me as a "welcome to the biking club" gift. He's so sweet.

The weekend is supposed to be nice again, so hopefully I'll get in some more riding. I'd love to get up to a half century pretty soon.

Have a good one!!

I believe too that in most places you must have a white front light and a red back light just like a car when you ride at night. If you ride on the streets, you can be ticketed for this just like a driver.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the advice. I bought some good biking shorts and they helped a bit. I am going to wait it out a while before passing any judgement on the saddle. Besides, I like it. Its the original that came with the bike and it has a pretty nice embroidered crest on it.

hkd--thanks for the congrats. I'm really excited about it. I bought it from the same shop that my fiance bought his current bike from, and both of us got great deals. If you're ever in Ohio definitely check out International Pro Bikes in dayton.

Ok I totally missed this....despite the fact that I was summoned to it :)

my undergraduate degree is in molecular genetics

the most recent thing I wrote was titled "Identification of five distinct CD34(+) subsets in human secondary lymphoid tissue: evidence for divergent pathways of NK cell, T cell, and dendritic cell development"

I am currently in a combined degree program in which I will receive an MD and a PhD

When I graduate for the last time, I will have spent as much time in post high school education as I did in grades 1-12

my fiance and I often fall asleep talking about the lastest articles in nature news or about why you cannot burn medical waste in a volcano (the actual subject of a slate article)

I also know what phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase  is.

I do not use wiki because...well its not a reliable source that any real nerd would use (sorry trustwomen I had to go there :)).

The last non-text book I bought was Statistics for dummies

I will play scrabble at any time, anywhere

I wake up in the middle of the night anxious to analyze data (lame, I know)

I'll think about this more. I may be docked points because I do not play many video games. However, I assure you that does not take away my dorkiness.

  • i have nothing to write about on this forum other than school because well...im a big enough dork that this is all there is to my life

I have a question for the ladies that I am sure has been covered.

For those of you who ride road bikes, how many of you have a saddle designed for a woman? Right now, I have the seat that came with the bike but my bum (and the vicinity) is pretty sore.

I am trying to determine if this is just something to deal with because I am new or if the special saddles are actually much more comfortable.

I'm completely fine waiting out the pain until I get used to it, just wanted to check on everyone else's opinion.

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought a road bike (my first) so that I can ride with my fiance who has been into biking for some time now. I'm soo excited, its ridiculous.

I bought a gently used Torelli with ultegra components for $650. The bike is in amazing shape and what's more its 44cm with, something we were having an incredibly hard time finding (I'm 5'0") in my price range.

Went on a 20 mile ride today with the boy. The weather was awesome, the scenery beautiful, and all in all it was great.

So hopefully you'll see me on here more to get advice with all of you veterens.

~Suzi

P.S. autismjtm--that's awesome for you and your son. Milestones are great things, I'm happy for you!!

Am I the only that feels a little bit better about themselves after seeing reality TV?

Yes, many of these shows portray an unrealistic ideal of beauty and youth (not all of them though....there are some pretty interesting looking people floating around in reality TV).

However, they also portray people willing to marry a washed up rock/rap star just to be on TV, they portray people willing to marry a stranger for money, in fact they portray people willing to do just about anything for money and 15 minutes in the spot light. Some people do really depraved things just to get attention on these shows.

I certainly don't think we should make ourselves feel better by looking at the awful attention seeking things people do on TV, but I also don't think that we shoul look at only the physical appearance of these people and use it as a weapon to make ourselve feel worse.

Really, don't compare yourself too much to anyone on a reality TV. Be happy :)
