I've probably had PCOS forever.  I was pretty developed at 12/13, but no period.  No one could believe that I didn't have a cycle yet I was so mature looking.  It was quite distressing.  Finally at 14 I started.  I never had regular cycles, I would for a few months, then they'd get all messed up.  And I've also had endometriosis, so lots of pain as well, horribly life-altering pain.  I used to miss school for that.  Until I had to work, so no option there.

I was put on the pill, that was all they had back then.  Then I went off to get pregnant, no period for several months.  Then I was actually regular for a few months, but no pregnancy.  That led to 3 years of infertility treatment, I sporadically would have a cycle on my own for awhile, then not at all.  I'd also began being too heavy by then, or on my way anyway.  By the time I was 30 I was skirting being obese.  I finally got pregnant from IVF, had 4 kids that way, because thanks to PCOS I had 35 follicles fromt hat one cycle.  My 4 kids were born in three pregnancies though, I had twins the second time.

So I went on Glucophage when the twins were two.  That and a low carb diet led to a large weight loss.  I've been on Glucophage ever since, it controls my irregular cycles and acne (I never outgrew acne until the meds) and probably my cysts (I got those for awhile, they're awful.)  But not the obesity.  I need the low carb diet for that.  The problem is that that is very hard to stick to.  I struggle with that, and continue to.  I've lost and regained, I'm working to lose again and am slowly having some success, slow going though.

So that's my story.  Oh, I do have a bit of facial hair now, not tons at this point, but who knows without meds.

To the PP whose insurance wont' cover meds, Glucophage is only $6 per month at Krogers, I don't even file my insurance anymore as they'd make me do mail order and all I'd save is $1 per month.  So I wouldn't discount that option.

Yes, I have it too.  I've managed it for about 10 years through diet and medication.  I've lost and regained weight too during that time.  I'm teetering trying to get on the losing end of things again.

Arc, how many calories have you been eating?  That's really the key.  You are doing a lot of cardio so you need to add that into your calorie needs at least somewhat.  Perhaps the estimate on what you burn with cardio is incorrect.

If you've been logging your food you could have someone look at it and see what they say.  I'd be happy to look at it if you'd like, not that I'm a dietician or anything.

Also, for me, the 5 or 6 meals thing does not work.  I need to eat 3 filling meals and only eat a snack if I can't make it to the next meal, which I usually don't have a problem with as long as I'm eating the right foods at my meal.  I do have a snack in the evening, but it's not a meal, it's typically a treat of some sort.

I'm hypoglycemic and for me balance is the key.  I need protein, at least 2 ounces at a meal, and it needs to be meat.  I also need some carbs, a serving or so, then I add in 2 to 3 servings of low carb veggies.  That keeps my blood sugar on track.  If I snack in between, it needs to be either low carb veggies (carrots are okay) or a combo of a fruit and protein, like an apple with peanut butter.  I'll eat yogurt sweetened with splenda as well including smoothies that I make myself.  Popcorn seems to be a good filling snack also.  I can eat sugar, but I need to have protein as well.  So as long as I ate a decent meal, I can eat a cookie and will be fine.

Good for you Sara.  My problem is that I get caught up in things like wanting to fit back in my summer clothing so I want to go faster.  I do think that losing slowly is the best way to go for long-term weight loss.  I don't go crazy, I eat 1500 to 1600 calories per day (up to 1800 like yesterday.)  I'm just glad I caught myself and started back before I gained everything back plus (I've definitely done that before.)

Anyway, OA is Overeaters Anonymous.  It's based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous and the group I'm involved with follows the Big Book principles.  The reason I gain weight is my compulsive overeating.  I'm a recovered compulsive overeater and I do sponsor as well.

Thanks for the welcome!

Hey, I'm Jenny, it looks like I haven't posted to this thread, but maybe I have.  Anyway, I want to lose a minimum of 60 lbs at this point.  Possibly more after that.  I lost 90 and regained, too much, not all.  I'm currently involved in OA and that is making a big difference.  So anyway, here I am.

Yes, I lose weight on the PCOS diet.  I lose weight as long as I limit my food intake and if I eat this way I am not hungry.  With your activity level though, you'll have to eat more food than what I eat.

I don't have any "don't foods," just "limited foods."  I drink diet pop and it's not a problem.

Well, I'm hypoglycemic and have been probably forever.  But I finally got it confirmed about 9 years ago.  I did meet with a nutritionist because I also have PCOS.  She gave me a "PCOS diet."  It's on my profile.  It works for my hypoglycemia as well.  I do not eat every 2.5 hours though, for me, that just doesn't work.  The key for me is adequate protein and lots of low carb veggies along with 1 serving of carbs per meal.  The balance is crucial and if I don't do it right I will not feel full.  If I do eat right for lunch, then I don't need a snack before dinner.  It I do need a snack, I eat carrots with light ranch or a low sugar yogurt.  The key is to combine your carbs with protein.  So if I have an apple, I need a little peanut butter as well.  I'll never be a vegetarian either becase I dont' find most plant proteins (beans for example) filling enough.  I must admit that I'm a little bad about breakfast, I have low sugar, high fiber cereal like Kashi along with skim milk.  I really should have an egg or something, but I hate messing up my kitchen in the AM.  Smile

I agree, Lean Cuisine isn't health food or anything, but it's better than a lot of stuff.  I add in the veggies and so far today have an A- (my lean cuisine's score was only a C.)  I've never tasted Nutrisystem food or anything, but even at Big Lots it's priced at $3 for a meal.  I can get a Lean Cuisine for 1.49 when there's a good sale.  I just stock up.   Now I do cook dinner's.  I'm a SAHM and this is easy for lunch and keeps me from eating stuff like the frozen pizza the kids just had.

Foods Why's everyone so obsessed with subway? Mar 24 2009

I'll eat it when I'm out and can't stand the thought of another salad.  I do think they are way too skimpy with the meat, but if I have them load up the veggies (I put everything non-pickled on mine including carrots and spinach) it fills me up.  They won't give you more meat or cheese, but they'll put on as many veggies as you'd like.  I do wish you could substitute turkey for cheese, I should ask about that the next time I go there.

I personally see no reason to do something like Nutrisystem.  You can buy Lean Cuisine meals at the regular supermarket and they're pretty much the same idea as Nutrisystem, portion control along with low fat eating.  I eat something like a Lean Cusine most days for lunch and add veggies to it and/or a salad.  I'll eat about 3 servings of veggies.  That fills me up until dinner for 300 to 350 calories.  It sounds exactly like what Nutrisystem does.  For breakfast I have high fiber cereal with skim milk and I"ll snack on fruit if I must, but prefer to not snack before lunch.  Then I cook a regular dinner, mostly lower fat, with lots of veggies and salad again.  I add in a reasonable evening snack.  I stay full all day and I eat abotu 1500 calories.  Which is most definitely a quick weight loss for me.   I've tried eating 1200 calories but haven't found that to be sustainable at all.

So personally, I'd try doing your own portion control/high veggie &fruit diet and see how it goes.

I'm tall and big myself.  I am losing again after having lost and regained, not all, but too much.  I tend to eat 3 meals per day and a small snack in the evening.  If I eat right, I tend to not need snacks.  For me, that means sufficient protein and lots of veggies and small amounts of carbs.  I am currently eating 1500 calories per day, which I know is considered too low.  I can lose at 2000 calories, but for now I'm trying to jump start things.  And I eat 2000 on weekends usually.  So anyway, although I've posted on this thread before, many people are now gone.

I eat carrot sticks with light ranch, an apple with 1/2 tbsp peanut butter (like a pp, just apples makes me hungry, blood sugar thing I'm sure.)  I'll also eat yogurt, but I look for low sugar varieties.  I have hypoglycemia issues though.

Good luck!

No, you got it wrong, you are a LESS FAT LOSER.  LOL

Anyway, the meeting thing helps me too, but I go to TOPS, which is a lot cheaper, $24 per year and $1 per week.  I debated doing Weight Watchers, but the cost is so much higher I decided to go this way, and it has worked well.  I lost when I joined, then quit going to meetings and gained, then started going back to meetings and I"m working on losing what I gained and getting to my final goal.

I go with a friend so I feel accountable to her as well as the meeting leader.  It's not so much what she say's in the meeting...it's the stepping on the scale in front of her and basking in the praise of my weekly loss!

I use CC ever day to help me figure out my points and I find these forums so useful (total bonus that it FREE).  So for me it's a combination of both programs that works at turning me into a ....

I have a food addiction also, it is the cause of my weight problem.  And now that I'm older, it can cause me to gain weight fast.  When I was younger, it was less of a problem.

Anyway, keeping them out of the house is best.  I bought some Slim a Bear 100 calorie ice cream bars for my "treat" everyday.  I have an easier time not bingeing on ice cream, probably because that tends to make me very sick.  Other than that, I can have success with individual serving bags as well.

I've looked for a therapist to work with with no luck.  I was in women's circle for this, but it ended and so far the new session has not started.  I go to TOPS also, which helps keep me on the wagon.  But it sucks that I can't just be normal.

Weight Loss Weight loss while breastfeeding? Sep 03 2008
04:46 (UTC)

At 5 days postpartum, I would not diet at all.  I have 4 kids, including twins, and breastfed them all way past the age of 1.  Right after they were born, I lost weight quickly without trying.  But right now, you are establishing your milk supply.  That and healing from birth.  I wouldn't jeopardize that by restricting calories.  Not to mention all the emotional/hormonal/life changes you are going through.

Since you want to lose, I'd wait until 6 to 12 weeks and then start a weight loss plan.  Definitely add back the 500 calories and I wouldn't aim for more than a pound per week.  That means you'd want a deficit of 500 calories on a calculator here that doesnt' allow for breastfeeding.  You can start exercising then too.  Just put the baby in the stroller and walk, or use a sling.  When my twins were infants, my neighbor and I started a walking plan in January.  I bought two snowsuits with attached mittens and feet and loaded them up and went and walked.  It worked out great, she had a newborn too.  Oh, and we live in Ohio.

I have tons of breastfeeding experience, so if you have any questions or want any support (I lost 90 lbs while breastfeeding a 2 yo) feel free to PM me.

Weight Loss How to get back on track Sep 03 2008

I'm with you too, I lost 90 and gained back too many over the past year.  I've tried and tried to get back on track before it got too awfully bad.  Finally I sucked it up and went back to my TOPS meeting and let everyone see how much I'd gained.  Now it's not biggy, I'm back on the way down.  For me, I need the accountability of a support group.  TOPS is inexpensive, but I'm guessing that weight watchers would work too, or even just a diet buddy.  Those don't work for me because I need someone there forcing me to get weighed, charting it, etc.

I prefer Calorie count because I basically can eat whatever I want.  I got annoyed at how hard WW dinged me for high fat content.  If I want a slice of pizza, I'll have it, along with a salad and then just eat a little less for my other meals.  I hated the way that slice would be 1/3 of my daily points but only 250 calories (estimating here, but you get my point.)

Weight Loss PCOS Oct 04 2007

I have PCOS and have had it for years.  I did gain quite a bit of weight, I'm sure the PCOS did not help, but I ate too if you KWIM.

Anyway, I was diagnosed and met with Dr. Glueck, he pioneered the treatment with Metformin.  I met with a dietician and she gave me a "PCOS diet."  That die is in myprofile if you are interested.  I lost a ton of weight very quickly.  Unfortunately, I couldn't maintain that diet long-term and ended up gaining the weight back plus another 30'ish lbs.  Last year I started counting calories and using the overall principles of the diet and then joined calorie count.  I have lost about 85 to 90 lbs (was 90, gained a bit back.)  The principle behind the diet is low carb.  Not no carb, I could have 4 servings of carbs per day.  The other important part was lots and lots of veggies, that is what I fill up on.  So with combining it with calorie counting, I eat a couple extra carb servings than the diet calls for.  I lose weight just as quickly at first, but as time goes on, it does get harder.  I take the medication too to hopefully avoid other complications like developing diabetes and endometrial cancer.

Everything is in my profile, I had infertility as well.

Hey, thought I'd revive this thread.  How is everyone doing?  I had a bad, bad, bad August, went to TOPS today and weighed myself, gained 10 lbs.  Yikes.  All that work for nothing.  Well, I won't sit around and berate myself.  It's just a wakeup call to get back with the program.  5 lbs should fall off quickly, possibly more if i'm lucky, the rest I'll have to work hard for as usual.

And welcome Universal.  I don't know if I'm stocky exactly, more truly big boned as in they look big on x-rays.  When I do your test, my fingertips extend beyond my crotch, my wrists are about there.  I definitely can weight a good amount more than your average woman and look good.  I'm still over 200 and everyone tells me how great I look.  Where I know that I can look better, but it's still nice.  I'm still in the overweight range on BMI, well I'm back into obese due to the weight gain actually.  BMI is pretty misleading though IMO, I should do that fat test you did, I have no idea where to do it though.  One thing is for sure though, there is plenty of fat on my body still.
Health & Support My Binge Eating disorder has a name - BED Aug 29 2007
15:54 (UTC)
I always knew I had an eating disorder, even if the doctors and therapists didnt' see it that way, even when I was normal weight.  AFter my year of dieting and 90 lbs I still can't be around trigger foods.  If they are there, I will eat them, period.  It's kind of like how an alcoholic can't have booze in the house.  Sometimes I can put off eating them until the end, right before I leave or go to bed and eat one right before and that works, other times that doesn't work.  Yesterday at a picnic I did the put it off technique and had 2 small brownies before I left, still one more thatn I planned for, they were tiny, but still.  I've considered whether I should seek therapy at this time as there are clinics here in town.  I don't want to gain the weight back.  I've spent about 3 weeks "off the wagon" and struggle to get back on, yesterday was pretty successful, and I know I've gained some, but obviously nowhere near all, and I don't want to end up back where I was.  Anyway, BED is real and it doesn't just go away in my experience.

My four children are from IVF, we did one cycle and got lots of follicles as you might imagine.  I didn't find pregnancy to cause problems with the PCOS except for leading to weight gain.  I gained 90 lbs total from the time I got pregnant with my oldest until last summer when I started losing weight.  I had lost 45 lbs at one point as well.  I actually lost all my weight after each preganncy and then gained it all back over the next year.  It was 3 pregancies as one was twins.

Good luck managing the PCOS.

I have PCOS and have lost 91 lbs to date.  I want to lose about 30 more, so I started out about where you are.  I take glucophage for my PCOS and it seems to manage my symptoms very well.  I don't think it does anything for weight loss, but it helps with everything else.  I have 4 children from infertility treatment partially due to the PCOS, but I'm past having children at this point and mostly treat the PCOS to maintain my health.
