| Weight Loss | Healthy school lunches for overweight children | Aug 06 2009 21:30 (UTC) |

I agree that giving kids food labelled "diet" (when they're not asking for them) might give them a bit of a complex, especially if they are aware that they are a little heavier than their classmates. I would avoid sodas (waaay too much sugar), but kids usually want a tasty drink. If she likes milk, try packing some nonfat milk or nonfat chocolate milk (in those little packages). I guess there's always tea, but I don't think a ten-year old would appreciate it. Most juices are super-packed with sugar as well, so I would avoid those. |

Liz-usa<- poor intern. So, no ricotta cheese any time soon. I used the cream cheese b/c I bought it for celery and then figured out that I really don't like celery. ^^; So, I wasn't using it, and it felt wasteful to just have it sit there. |

I'm interested in this too. I always have high carb/sugar ratios from eating fruit, but shouldn't that be different than if I were getting it from coke and candy? (mmmmmm, mangos on the brain right now) |

I have an IPhone, and I would still prefer that the full address (caloriecount.about.com) go to the full site by default. Everytime I go back to my browser and the browser reloads the page, it switches me back to the mobile site and I have to waste time getting back to the page I was on. |

Aren't green beans and greens carbs? That should count. I'm learning how to pack lunches, still, but my recent favorite is Easy Taco Salsa Chicken with rice. Yummy, yummy, yummy. I usually stick the chicken in the oven while showering in the morning. Need to figure out how to stir-fry, but I hear that's easy. Also, Stuffed Green Peppers are good to freeze ahead of time, and they come in all kinds of varieties. |

| Weight Loss | Why is So Hard To Find Clothes For Overweight People? | Jul 17 2009 20:58 (UTC) |

Original Post by sublimelmf: My point is simply that the point of legislating/pressuring/allowing businesses into forbidding smoking is because of negative effects of smoking on other people. If the point of such actions were to make it harder for people to smoke, we would just forbid anyone from smoking anywhere. Maybe I'm too much of a stickler for logic, but the offensive part of comparing making it harder to smoke and making it harder to be plus-size was tracing back the logic. If you follow the logic through, this argument rationalizes making being fat "harder" by limiting the amount of clothes available to overweight people because being overweight has negative consequences on others' health. Or you can just skip that convoluted logic, and simply take away a legal lesson. Smoking is not banned in restaurants for smokers' health, it's for the people around them. I certainly agree that being overweight and smoking are both bad for your health. But, when dealing with such a self-esteem/body-image issue as weight, you do not punish people into losing weight. It doesn't work, ethically or practically. |

Original Post by soupcanx: No, the government taxes cigarettes ("sin tax") in order to discourage smoking. Public places no long allow smoking because of the adverse effects on other people, i.e. lung cancer from second-hand smoke. Whether or not this will affect people's motivation to quit smoking is irrelevant. So, if you want to make a comparison between smoking and plus-size clothing, you're either going to have to argue that being overweight has an adverse effect on other people (offensive) or propose that we tax plus-size clothing (also offensive). To add a personal note, I'm a firm believer that self-confidence makes losing weight so much easier. Dressing well, as well as losing weight, came with the whole package of "taking care of myself". So, in a sense, larger-sized clothing actually helped me stay on-target. It sucks having to buy new clothing all the time though. I bought nice business clothes for my internship 6 weeks ago, and they don't fit anymore. My coworkers must think I can't shop, lol. XD |

| Foods | what is up with yogurt? | Jul 01 2009 19:44 (UTC) |
|
If you work 60+ hours a week, though, sometimes it's really easy to just grab a pre-flavored yogurt. Moreover, it really depends on the brand. I'm not averse to artificial sweeteners, so I get Dannon Light & Fit. They're 80 calories for 6 oz and they come in a variety of flavors that would be hard to replicate without a lot of effort/time. Also, they're 75 cents each at the grocery store I go to, which is miracluous in nyc. Not all who buy prepackaged yogurt are ignorant. |

Original Post by clairelaine: Unfortunately, most of the potatoes I can find are twice the size of a medium potato, weight-wise. :/ Still worth it, though! And, come on, people, don't knock sour cream! Light Sour Cream is like 20 cals/tbsp. And, it's sooooooo yummy! |

If I didn't eat after 6 pm, I'd DIE. Especially if you have glucose issues (hypoglycemia, diabetes, etc.), you should keep it consistent throughout the day. If I don't eat right before I go to bed, I get insomnia and feel sick in the morning. Of couse, it does take me a while to go to sleep. But, I am digesting and burning while sleeping, so it makes sense to fill the tank a bit (maybe 100-200 cals). |

Are you cutting back calories and eating healthy? If you're just cutting calories, you might be missing out on important nutrients and vitamins. What's the typical makeup of your intake? It should end up being 50% carb, 25% fat, 25% protein. I'm also not hungry, and I don't know why either.... Maybe I get enough fat and fiber in the day? |

I second both the yogurt and the oatmeal. Good oatmeal (not instant!) has lots of fiber and protein, so it keeps you full till lunch. I really like dried fuits and am addicted to all things chewy, but they're so high in sugar. So, if you mix them in with the oatmeal, they go a LONG way. I hate the texture of oatmeal, but if there is a dried cherry, I can concentrate on that instead. Yummy. A fun thing to do with the lean deli meats is to put them on a frying pan. Lean ham smells amazing after being fried a little (in no-cal cooking spray, of course). Kashi GoLean is amazing, of course, but pricey. I feel like there are egg substitutes out there, aren't there? |

I bought an analog from Target because I thought it would be more accurate. The problem with adjusting them as they deviate from zero is this: it's not a simple addition problem. My scale got to the point where it would tell me I was, say, 160, but default would be 20. When I recentered it to 0, it would tell me I was 159. Try explaining that. ConsumerSearch really liked Tanita, but they are pricey, and I don't want to waste my money on body fat composition, water weight, etc. when scientists have found no real accuracy. They also recommended the Health-O-Meter HDL820KD-18, but Amazon won't ship it for 1-3 months.... Does anyone know if it's comparable to the HDL820-81? It only has one review that's not so favorable, but it looks exactly the same. |

| Weight Loss | When will I stop being so hungry? | May 28 2009 20:45 (UTC) |

But since moving/packing is such a calorie-burning activity, it might be best to individually log activities for the few days that you are moving. When I was moving, I found that I was burning enough calories to be able to get away with a 1000 calorie deficit without working out at all. |

I love hot tea! I am honestly not that hungry through the day. In fact, for the first week, I thought there must be something severely wrong with me, because I'm eating 1200 calories a day and am not hungry. I think that it's hot tea, milk (high protein), and cheese (fat and protein). The hot tea is really yummy with splenda, and hot water decreases appetite. I don't find that the artificial sweetener triggers appetite if you eat it close to a meal. However, gum drives me NUTS. I read somewhere that chewing gum while you're hungry stimulates digestive enzymes because your stomach thinks that it's got food coming. When it doesn't get any, HUNGER! Totally understand with the moving though. I just moved out of my dorm. Try switching your activity level to Sedentary and then recording all your activity. Even just standing to pack/unpack burns more calories than you would think, and moving heavy boxes takes a lot. If you're not taking the moving into account, you might be burning more than you think. |

| Weight Loss | When you get zero sleep... | May 18 2009 16:52 (UTC) |

I totally understand about the zero hours of sleep. This is the only semester where I haven't skipped sleep in a regular basis. Usually, I go sleepless (literally 0 hours) at least once a week. Moreover, people shouldn't jump to conclusions that this means a student isn't planning her time well. If you're taking challenging courses, sometimes all-nighters are practically unavoidable. Of course, that's debatable (I could technically get 8 hours of sleep a week and just live in the library). I just tried messing around on the account settings and changing my Average Hours Slept from 7 to 1 (it won't let me enter 0 XD). For some reason, my estimated calories burned didn't change. Funny..... what's the point of that average then? If you look up activities, my account says that 1 hour of sleep burns 60 calories, whereas 'Sitting - Studying' burns like 120. So, if you're used to 7 hours, maybe you burn an extra 420? Of course, you should factor in slowed down metabolism, but there's a sure bet that you're burning some extra calories. I would say 420 would be an upper limit. The numbers don't quite make sense, though. If I were to study for every waking moment, that means I would burn 2440 calories! Since studying a lot was the reason I gained weight in the first place, this doesn't seem plausible. 'Sitting - Light office work' burns 101 calories, so an all-nighter might burn at most 280 instead. Confusing..... |

| Weight Loss | Cutting out refined sugar | May 15 2009 00:36 (UTC) |

Actually, I've found that cutting out refined sugars doesn't necessarilly help with the calorie-counting. I can chew on a very yummy cookie or a banana or an apple, and they're all around 100 calories. What really makes me grab for the banana is the protein and fiber, and I'd only go for the apple because of fiber and vitamins (I actually hate the darn things.... ;) ) |

| I don't know if this is hapenning to anyone else, but I'm not able to track my calories anymore. My campus has all the nutritional facts online, but they have servings of "4 oz." I have no idea what 4 oz. of all these random foods are! I'm walking more, now, so maybe that will help. Also, I can't get accurate scale measurements anymore. To do that, I would have to wake up, go to the bathroom, walk 5 min. to the gym (without eating) and jump on the scale. So, my weight chart's going to fluctuate more than I would like. Especially, since I can't get to the gym until the afternoons. Oi. |

| Weight Loss | Your most embarrassing fat moment. | Aug 30 2006 04:56 (UTC) |
|
| When I was in 7th grade, I was the only girl in my class, and after school we would have to sit on a fence and wait for our parents to come pick us up. Back then, I really liked Jigglypuff from pokemon (for those who don't know, jigglypuff looks like a cute pink crempuff with a face.) After school, they would take turns saying each word from the chant "Liz is fat and ugly just like Jigglypuff." I was mortified and could never say anything. Just sat there, praying for my mom to come pick me up. This spring, I got an invitation to my middle school reunion and didn't go because I was at my peak weight of 181. Some people are disgusting. |

| I looooooooove peanut butter. Since I'm not very good at cooking, if I ever need lunch, I can just whip up a PB&J! C'est Magnifique! I have Skippy in my fridge right now, and I'm grieving over whether to use it or not. I have TWO JARS, but I just discovered the words "partially hydrogenated" in the ingredients! AHHHHHH! My favorite peanut butter is trying to kill me! *is so tired, she can't see straight, but can't manage to fall asleep* >.< |
