| When he was younger, my nephew used to love the fat that hangs underneath people's arms...he called it "rubber-band meat" because it reminded him of the fatty skin of chicken or turkey. My mother used to let him stroke hers while he fell asleep since it soothed him! | |||

| you know it's time to lose weight when someone who works in the same building as you but hasn't seen you in a long time says off-handedly "i used to see you walking a lot but i haven't seen you doing it lately, maybe that's why you've gained so much weight...." there were circumstances behind that weight gain that he didn't know about (death in the family) but i didn't make any excuses. probably because i was so shocked by his bluntness. i dropped those extra pounds soon after. | |||

| you kind of answered your own question... you need to eat some protein with every meal. eating a balanced meal of protein, carbs, and some healthy fat with every meal helps to keep you full. you just need to look into finding some protein sources besides meat. cottage cheese, string cheese, eggs, yogurt, hummus w/ your veggies, even whey protein powders blendend in a water/milk/fruit mixture would help. and try to eat small meals every 3 hours or so you never have long until your next meal and your blood sugar stays steady. | |||
| Weight Loss | Need support - 15 lbs to go, but I can't break this plateau! | Apr 29 2007 23:18 (UTC) |

| hi nooree,
oops, i just reread what i wrote and i meant to say that i worked out 5-6 days per week when i reached goal, and on two of those days, I worked out once in the morning and once in the evening. so no, i wasn't working out twice a day, every day. sorry about that. even so, i'm sure this is still a lot of exercise for some people but i wanted to get it off once and for all, i'm sure slow and steady would have worked just as well. but then again, i think a lot of people are in denial about what it takes to lose weight. i really like to run but i only do it 3 times a week because i know if can be hard on the body. on days that i don't run, i use either the arc trainer, the upright bike, the elliptical, or the rower. sometimes i'll do 15-20 minutes of each machine, one right after the other. i do at least 60 minutes of cardio, minimum. as for lifting, i'm not a big fan but i know it's a must. 2-3 times a week, for 20 minutes minimum when doing upper body only and up to 30 minutes when lower body is included. i tend to lift with the heaviest weight possible and move from one exercise/body part to the next with little rest in between. i don't use machines much, mostly free weights, especially for the lower body. i just do weighted squats and lunges... mostly squats, i hate lunges. it's done wonders for my butt and legs. as for food, i'm an eater so i'd rather exercise more instead of restrict my intake. i eat anywhere from 1800-2500 calories on weekdays and up to 3000 calories on weekends. i don't aim for a deficit on weekends so those are maintenance calories. it keeps me sane and on track during the week to know i have off days on the weekends. i think the key for me is the fact that i stay active outside of the gym. i walk a lot and wear a pedometer. i'm constantly moving around at work, i take the stairs, i park far away at stores, i even have a weighted hula hoop that i sometimes use while watching t.v. at night instead of the alternative, stuffing my face. So a conscious effort on my part to be active allows me to eat more than the average person and still have a pretty decent calorie deficit each day. and no, i haven't cut any types of food out of my diet. i just try to keep the junk food to a minimum and know my weaknesses. i can't keep junk in the house because i know i can't eat just one. so i only buy that stuff in limited portions. i tend to eat some type of protein with every meal in order to keep my blood sugar from spiking and to keep my hunger in check. i also eat a lot of vegetables and a lot of fiber. i think i easily get about 40-50 grams of fiber per day and that's about twice the recommended allotment. okay, i've written a pretty long book so i'm going to wrap this up. hope that was helpful! |

| i'm with you ladies. i have about 10 more pounds to go, give or take. i've actually reached goal before but i fell off the wagon for no good reason. i lost the last 10 pounds previously by kicking it in to high gear b/c i was tired of screwing around and not seeing results. i worked out twice a day for maybe 3 weeks near the end there, once in the morning and one in the evening. i switched up the type of exercises i was doing constantly to keep my body guessing. i lifted twice a week for at least 30 minutes per session. i did interval workouts to help keep my metabolism stoked and i ate every 3 hours for the same reason. the one thing i never did was drop my food intake below 1600 calories, it just made me crazy not to eat. i read fitness magazines during my 'weak' time of the day to keep me motivated, usually in the evening hours while watching t.v. i didn't bring money to work with me to avoid my occasional vending machine visits and of course, i always packed my lunch. when eating out, i tried to pick restauraunts that have their menu/nutrition info online so i could make healthy choices. i think that's about it. the last 10 or 15 pounds is definitely doable, the hardest part for me is trying to figure out how to stay there. good luck! | |||

| i can relate. i take all my weekends off (no deficit) and i always go for pretzels or some other high carb item. i've been known to eat a whole box of the synder sourdough pretzels in one sitting. knowing my weekends are free really helps keep me on track during the weekdays. plus, i'd like to think it keeps my metabolism on track. | |||

| Weight Loss | Calories in the morning vs. calories at night...what's the dif? | Apr 04 2007 22:13 (UTC) |

| I think everyone has the right idea but it mostly depends on what your goals are. If you're an athlete, or training for an event (triathlon, marathon, etc.), then yes, timing very much matters so you can replenish glyocogen stores and have energy for your next workout. But if you're simply trying to lose weight, I don't think it matters as much when you eat as long as you stay within your calorie limits. I, for example, eat a HUGE dinner and even a snack afterwards, right before a fall asleep (1000-1500 calories). I might occasionally suffer a bad case of indigestion, but it certainly hasn't effected my weight loss at all. But I also eat breakfast, too. I try to eat every 3-4 hours and have a little protein with each meal to control my blood sugar. But I prefer the big dinners just b/c I know I'm at my weakest in the evening hours. | |||

| wow! congrats on your weight loss so far. sounds like you're doing great!
just make sure you get proper running shoes that give you enough support now that you're thinking about running on a regular basis. i usually start to feel it in my knees first when my shoes get old but i'm too cheap to replace them right away. keep it up! |

i would change your weight every 5 pounds or so. but try not to dwell too much on the numbers they give you. i've always thought they were a little too low. i don't know how people can eat 1200 calorie each day and not want to kill everyone around them! |

how about you guys? |

| wow, wedtomike, that's an inspirational story! congrats on your weight loss to date. my weight loss goal is similar to yours in that i, too, got down to 140 and was told i was a bit too lean. i got my body fat tested and it was around 16%, which is fine for some people but i lost my period around that time too. i gained back 15 pounds or so and now i've resolved to get back to 145, which i deem my "sane" weight. it's going well so far, i think. i'm losing about a pound a week. i just have to stick with it. i'm hoping i can get most of it off before the holidays so i won't drive myself crazy thinking about what i should or should not eat!   ; | |||

| you don't have to have fat to belly dance, but i think it's nice to at least have curves. who wants to see a stick undulating what she doesn't have?... hehehe... i think you look great, too, shakti.
hope the weekend is going well for you guys. i ran early this morning so it's nice to have the day ahead me and not have to worry about "forgetting" to work out. |

| Weight Loss | Change of goal weight...cause muscle weighs more than fat, RIGHT? | Oct 12 2006 22:10 (UTC) |

| muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat... but muscle takes up LESS SPACE than fat so you look leaner with muscle as opposed to having fat.
sorry to be such a geek but i had to say it. the concept behind your post is great though. throw out the scale! it's the best thing i ever did for myself when it came to body image. |

| Fitness | Pedometers | Oct 11 2006 15:04 (UTC) |
|
| i got mine from walmart. it's only about 4 bucks or so but it works for me. it's the gowalking pedometer by sportline. you have to measure the length of your stride before starting so that your pedometer will be more accurate. the pedometer gives you steps and mileage. i'd ignore the steps and just go by mileage. even if it's not accurate, it's more about consistency, kind of like using a scale.
i wear my pedometer every day and estimate that i burn about 100 calories per mile of walking based on my height/weight. i've been right on track and consistently losing weight based on this calculation so i'm pretty happy with my pedometer for this reason alone. don't waste your money on the more expensive models unless you're really into gadgets and all the frills. good luck! |

| i go for a large deficit monday through thursday and if i sucessfully reach my target deficit on all those days, i'll eat maintenance calories friday through sunday. i wouldn't say my weight loss is faster, just more consistent. i've been losing 1 pound per week. i think cycling my cals keep me sane and i tend to stay on track knowing i'll be able to eat a lot more at the end of the week. | |||
| Weight Loss | A day of junk but still within my calorie limits....? | Aug 20 2006 00:06 (UTC) |
1 |
| you can answer this question both ways depending on how you look at it. if you're just worried about gaining/losing weight, then no, it doesn't matter what you eat. it's all about the number of calories. period.
but then the other side of the equation is that you're missing out on a lot of essential nutrients that your body needs if you just eat junk all the time, especially while you're dieting. a lot of people find themselves experiencing more cravings and getting out of control because they're blood sugar is all over the place after eating processed sugary foods all day and they end up binging at night. but if you're that rare individual and this isn't a problem for you, and you can keep these cheat days to only once per week, more power to you. |

| Weight Loss | Question on jogging... | Jul 29 2006 19:13 (UTC) |
5 |
| you might have tried too much too soon for someone who is just starting to run. i've been running for 4 years and i still run at 5.6-6.0 mph at a 1% incline when i use a treadmill. a 1% incline is enough to simulate wind resistance, unknown elements, etc. that you encounter when you run outside. cramping is in indication that you are either dehyrdated or doing something that your body isn't ready for. i think it's probably the latter.
keep up the good work! |

| Try weighted hula hooping. You can find them online in by looking up "sport hoops" or "weighted hula hoops".. or something to that effect. It's fun and you can do it while watching t.v. so the time flies by. Depending on your weight and intensity, you can burn up to 10 calories per minute, too! | |||

| my local ice cream shop offers this brand of frozen yogurt. it's very popular amongst the women understandably. but i found that it can get kind of expensive (especailly if you tend to indulge every day!) so i did some research and found a company on-line that sells it to individuals so you can make it at home: http://www.box-of-goodies.com/wow-cow.cfm
1 bag of powder (chocolate or neutral base) and 1 small bottle of your choice of flavoring is mixed with a gallon of water. Each bag makes up to 1.25 gallons of frozen yogurt so it'll last a while. i only make up to 16 ounces at a time in my frozen yogurt maker because anything more tends to overflow since it's mostly water based. it's good stuff and definitely worth it if you have a sweet tooth like me! |
