Foods Thoughts on Hummus Oct 24 2007
19:18 (UTC)
here's a great use for hummus... something to take to parties and potlucks without anyone guessing it's healthy.

Take a large flatbread (whole wheat or red pepper is delicious), place it on waxed paper or plastic wrap.  Spread it with hummus, then baby spinach leaves on top and thin red pepper strips in the center.  Roll it up (width-wise, so the roll is as long as the bread).  Let it rest for a few minutes (and at this point you can put it in the refrigerator overnight if you want - great "do-ahead" appetizer).  Then cut the roll into 1 inch pinwheels and stick a fancy toothpick in each pinwheel - to keep it secure and for easy serving.  Arrange on a nice platter and you've got an easy healthy appetizer for the upcoming holiday season.

keep them in the freezer... they thaw in about 5 minutes... and no worry about going rancid.  I keep all nuts in the freezer - it's easy to use little amounts.

I don't weigh/measure it prior to cooking... since I cook an entire pound at a time... easier to measure one cup of cooked pasta.  An added bonus to this method is that you then see what one cup of pasta looks like in your bowl.  It helps to "train" your eye.

I don't believe that having all your fruit in one sitting is bad for you ... it's the amount you eat each day that really counts...

I'm BACK.... I'm BACK!!!!! Yippee!!!!!   I've been away since January and binging terribly... so now instead of having just 4 lbs to go... I have 10 ... oh well...   So far today, I've consumed 645 cals... will have a mid-afternoon snack and a decent dinner, as well as my bedtime treat... staying under 1300 .... I will do this!

oh my! don't stay away from bananas... they're very good for you ... in the right quantity and if it's recorded in your food log.  A medium banana fills me up and satisfies a sweet tooth ... don't deny any fruit from your diet...each one has different nutrients and variety is the spice of life!

And as for how much fruit to eat each day... depends on what else I'm eating... some days I have more fruit than veggies...and other days it's the reverse...

I don't believe you'll have too much trouble... you've only been eating vegetarian for a year... I do believe that most stomach distress people have is because they're eating fast food/fried food, not the fact that it's chicken.

You can always do what I do... I'm a "semi-veg" ... which means that I occasionally enjoy meat/chicken, but mostly eat vegetarian.  In fact, when you look at cultures that use meat as an ingredient in dishes, rather than the featured ingredient... it's a much healthier way to eat.  Eat vegetarian when you can... and when you're out and there's not a decent veg choice...then go for a healthier chicken dish...

Hi Micky... don't do what Beachwalker suggests re beer... Yuk!  What I do is have a beer (one i really enjoy... after all life is to be enjoyed)... anyway, then the next drink is a WATER... then a beer, etc.  that way, even if I over-indulge... it's not too much.

An important thing that I keep in mind is that this is a "lifestyle change" ... not a punishment... if you make it hard on yourself, you won't continue...

I'm back after being away since January... have gained about 8 lbs back.... but now i'm more determined... i've seen that writing everything down and reading the posts, keeps me focused... you can do it too...

well, i'm back today... haven't logged on since january and i'm up about 8 lbs... yuk!   all I can offer is that today is the first day and for you to keep at it... start writing everything in your food journal... today didn't start too well for me... had a corn muffin for breakfast (360 cal)... not my best choice... but by writing it in my journal, it became real and started me back on track.  WRITE IT DOWN... it really does work that way...

Sorry you're not feeling well...but don't use being sick to eat junk.  Instead focus on drinking lots of juice and tea ... and try to eat only food that's "healthy" for you.  Sit on the sofa and do your nails... keeps your hands busy - someone on here said recently that when she does her nails it keeps her from eating for a least an hour.

feeling good... didn't buy a chocolate dessert at the market today... there's a wonderful gourmet market near my office where i go to get lunch supplies.  On my way over I was craving chocolate and told myself that I'd buy just one treat, but decided against it when I got there.  Bought 6 grapefruit (they were 3 for 99cents), a grilled chicken breast, avocado, artichoke salad (no oil), limes, cilantro and some ground chicken (to make rice soup tonight).

Just finished my lunch: spicy grilled chicken breast, 1/2 avocado - (with a squeeze of lime over the chicken and avocado), artichoke salad and chicken broth.  Absolutely delicious - and I've now got 600 cals for the rest of the day to play with.

What exactly are you craving?  Is it something you're depriving yourself of ... that makes you binge?  Or are your restricting your diet so much that you binge because of that?

That small plate concept may work for lots of people but for me, I tend to feel deprived because I know it's a small plate.  I use a large dinner plate and arrange my food artistically on it - keeping in mind proper portions.  In fact, a Lean Cruisine meal on the plate with a salad on the same plate makes "a lot of food" to fool the eye.

Maintain good posture - walking up my stairs, I make sure I am standing erect which really works my legs.  Good posture also makes you hold your stomach in - which works those muscles.  So, your mother was right - stand up straight!  Shoulders back, stomach in...

Weight Loss How Often Should We Weigh Ourselves? Jan 12 2007

I weigh myself every day... it's interesting to see how my weight fluctuates, not too much - maybe a few ounces or pound.  When I'm up a bit, it gives me the motivation to really watch what I'm eating.  And when I'm clearly losing, it motivates me to keep going.

It's all a matter of how weighing works for you - I'd suggest weighing yourself one a week to start.  But don't let the scale be your only way of keeping track - measure yourself - and look at how your clothes are fitting differently as you lose.

Glad you made it through without resorting to chocolate.  And as Clairelaine said, there will be fluctuations that don't make sense.  I was 134 before Christmas and then in these past two weeks, have gone up to 139...stayed there for a couple of days, then down to 133.8 and now today I'm 134.2 ... go figure.  Hang in there!

And definitely clue us in as to where to get chocolate tea ... sounds great.
Foods low calorie foods that fill u up!?!?!? Jan 12 2007

Couple of things to consider if you're not feeling "full" enough.  Are you eating a very low fat diet?  If so, incorporate a little "good fat" into your diet: 1 tbsp of olive oil on your salad, peanut butter on an apple.  Our bodies need some fat and that's one of the things that satisfies the hunger.

As the others have already said, high fiber foods such as fruits and veggies (especially the veggies, since they're lower in cals).  Make a big pot of vegetable soup - it's really easy - just dump a variety of veggies into a pot of broth together with a can of crushed tomatoes, and simmer with some of your favorite spices.  Totally low cal, but very filling.
Foods Who eats what? Jan 11 2007

Interesting thing about Buddhists.  From all the reading I did before going to Thailand - they refrain from eating meat that they kill themselves, but if someone else kills it, it's okay.  Monks aren't supposed to eat meat, but they depend on the people in the area "making merit" by feeding them - and if the people put meat in their bowl, they eat it.

Try the flavored seltzer water... not the flavored water that's so popular these days (which costs a lot and contains aspartame).

The great things about seltzer water is that there's no calories or sodium naturally, comes in a variety of flavors, has bubbles (great for soda drinkers), and is generally pretty cheap (45 cents for a liter bottle).

That's all pretty low cal but very flavorful... great idea.  Reminds me of the Pennsylvania Dutch way of eating - "7 sweets and 7 sours" with each meal... a little apple butter with that cottage cheese - yummy.

As long as it fits in your plan... I don't think it's a problem as all... I just admire your willpower - if I had ice cream at home, I'd over indulge.  But I do keep Edy's fruit bar and fudge bars (both under 100 cal) for that evening treat.  This is after all a lifestyle change - and I don't plan on giving up my evening treat for a lifetime.
Weight Loss Everything on the plate! Jan 10 2007

oh my gosh... I used to do that.. finish everything on my plate, even if I was full... as kids, we couldn't leave the table unless our plate was clean and we couldn't have dessert until the plate was clean... needless to say, i'd eat everything and then have dessert.  Weight Watchers taught me to eat what I truely enjoyed... if I wanted something sweet, I'd figure out how to incorporate that into my meal.  Chicken breast baked with fruit for that "sweet", etc.  Before that, I'd eat a decent meal just so I could have dessert.  Now I find that I can actually go out to a dinner party and only have one or two bites of dessert...it's enough - 'specially since I'm aware of the cal counts.

Congrats on eating the amount of cals you should have in a day... saw on your profile that you're recovering from an eating disorder, so I'm very glad when I read the other comments and your reply.

My only comment (and this is because I don't know what you'd plan for dinner) is that you should try to get some more fresh fruits and veggies in your diet.  This time of year, an orange or grapefruit would make a great snack.

FYI, I generally have around 600 cals by lunchtime ... which gives me the leeway to have an afternoon snack, a decent dinner, and a bedtime snack and stay under 1300.  It seems like you're on that track too... keep up the good work.
