| Hey guys, I'm a little late. My boyfriend was visiting for the weekend and he got Monday off work so it was a long weekend for us. And of course we ended up eating out almost every meal but we made pretty good choices. Plus we went to the driving range a couple times and went out for quite a few long walks. Good weekend! But no loss...
LW: 163 lbs CW: 163 lbs Turns out I'm really, really good at maintaining a weight. Since I'm not losing at all it means it's time to turn up the effort... Sounds like everyone has been having an interesting week. Let's hope this is a good one. |

| My new vegetable for the week was a jicamah. It was sort of like a cross between an apple and a potato--new to me! I liked it.
I've been helping to run a conference at my university the last two days so I've barely had time to sit down. It's nice to put in some long, active days of running around instead of sitting behind a desk for the day and sitting around at home for the evening. |

| I've given biking a try too, but at the gym. I'm finding it's making a difference to try to shake things up a bit and do different exercises. I find myself wanting to go the gym every day instead of feeling like I should every other day. | |||

| Hey sparkleriot, I was thinking of going for a training session or two. I think I probably will. It seems like a great way to shake things up a bit. I don't really have any rewards plan myself, maybe some other people do. It might be a good idea to have something for the group.
I don't have to worry about Memorial Day since we don't celebrate it here, but I know the feeling. Our May holiday was a few weeks ago and I had to try not to go overboard at the BBQ's. The nice thing is that you're usually also outside and active so it can help to balance things out. Enjoy the BBQ's and make sure to play soccer and frisbee, etc! Super fun. Enjoy the long weekend everyone! |

| weddingmama - have you ever golfed before? You should if you're interested!! I have a great set of clubs that I got as a gift a few years ago and I haven't been using them. My goal for this summer if definitely to become a competent golfer! I never really thought it would be "exercise" but the first few times I went to the driving range for half an hour or so I was sore through my stomach and shoulders for days afterwards! It's definitely good for core/upper body! So far, so good-I'm getting much better!
xzcandizx - I love those bagels too. Plus the Fibre1 cereal, which can give you half the daily value of fibre too--I usually mix half a cup of it with half a cup of some other cereal though. |

| Hey guys,
LW: 162.5 lbs CW: 163 lbs Not bad, considering I've been out of town for a few days and eating out every meal. I'm considering no (significant) gain on this vacation a success as I conquered several buffet dinners without over-doing it and even got to the hotel gym at least once for a run in the morning. I think it's really great to see so much activity on here. I just got back so hopefully I'll be able to join in. We're definitely going to make some good progress together. |

| LW: 162.5 lbs
CW: 162.5 lbs My body definitely likes being around 162 lbs. It takes a huge amount of effort to lose even a couple pounds, and it comes back right away the second I have a few big meals or miss a few workouts. But on the plus side, I can maintain it pretty effortlessly. I'm going to give up logging my food for awhile and see how I do with just working out more and eating with nutrition in mind, but not calories. Maybe it'll creep down if I can improve my fitness. |

| weddingmama - homemade olive and coconut oil soap sounds incredible! I'm jealous :) Congratulations on 8 lbs, that's great. You must be seeing and feeling quite a difference, which is always nice and motivating.
And same to you lillysmominpa - 30 pounds! Congrats! That's quite a milestone. xzcandizx - do you have Skor chocolate bars? I can never remember which ones are only in Canada. They're basically a hard toffee covered with chocolate. Skor cake is usually just chocolate cake (or ice cream cake) and white icing with a bunch of crushed up Skor bars on top and inbetween the cake layers. I know a lot of people find it more difficult to say on track on the weekends, but I actually do much better on Saturday and Sunday. I find it so much easier to be satisfied on less food when I'm free to eat anytime instead of just during scheduled work breaks! And I usually get more sleep than during the week, which helps me to eat less too. |

| That's the strangest part! it was around 80 here a couple days ago and now it's back to mittens and snow. It's supposed to be around freezing for a couple days and then warm up again. We've been getting some pretty extreme weather the last few years, especially in the spring.
And as for the animal testing, I totally respect that it's something you feel strongly about and will stand up for. I actually didn't really mean to say it was necessary as much as I meant to say it was common, so it might be hard to find a cancer charity to support that isn't involved in it at all. It's an interesting arguement. I guess I usually just think about how you can learn a lot from an animal study--like dissecting a rat or a pig in anatomy class--so therefore they're useful. But you could tell me that they'd learn a lot more about cancer from studying humans so why don't they perform experiments on people, right? I can totally see where you're coming from, if it's unethical to experiment on people then it should be exactly the same thing for animals. Heavy stuff. But I guess we sort of hijacked the thread a little bit :) I had a pretty good day today calorie-count-wise. I went to the gym and turned down a huge piece of skor cake in favour of a sugar-free almond pound cake (that was delicious!). Now that the water challenge is over, I realized I'm not drinking much anymore so I'm going to work on that again. |

| xzcandizx - I am involved in cancer research right now and unfortunately animal testing is pretty common for studying all types cancer and other diseases too, like MS, Alzheimer's, etc. I know there's a fair amount of it done at my school. Unfortunately I think it would be nearly impossible to separate cancer research from animal studies.
I took a long time for my undergrad degree too (5 years), and then I guess I decided that wasn't quite long enough so I started two more. I still don't really understand how that happened ;) I'm one final away from finishing all my M.Sc. classes and my stress level is off the charts because I'm still trying to finish assignments and labs so I'm not going to have much time to study. I just need to make it through the next 5 days but I'm exhausted!! Good luck with your exams you guys, it's such a good feeling to finally finish. Just think about how hard you've worked! Any other Canadians get hit with snow lately? I got it this morning, I had to dig out my mittens! It's been super warm and green lately and then today...snow storm. Gotta love it. |

| Hey guys, how's the week going? I'll be happy as long as I don't end up gaining! I seem to be able to go about a week or two doing really well and then there will be a day when my body rebels and what would normally fill me up just makes me feel like I haven't even eaten yet. That's cool, I just eat a bit more those days but not enough to be gaining. Being able to concentrate at school is my priority right now. It's not an excuse to eat anything I want but I really don't want to add stress to my life by worrying about how I shouldn't have had that muffin this morning.
I realized the other day that one of the big ways I need to change is the general feeling that any exercise that isn't intense and long "isn't worth it". I think that's a dangerous way to feel! I don't squeeze in 15 minutes runs, I don't take little walks or a few extra stairs or all the things that can add up to a lot over a whole day. I have exercising-hard mode or a not-exercising-at-all mode and nothing inbetween. I don't want being active to feel like some big undertaking where I'm obligated to wear myself out every time. If I feel up for 20 light minutes of something it's way better than not doing anything at all because I don't feel like I could do it for an intense 40 or 50 minutes! Now I just have to listen to myself... |

| AF could be "Aunt Flow"? I'm just guessing that that's what you meant too, I've never seen it abbreviated that way either. Thanks for the encouragement xzcandizx, I'm definitely going to keep up the water intake. I'm probably so used to being perpetually dehydrated that that's what feels normal to me. I'm expecting to notice soon that I feel way better in general when I stay hydrated--I've already noticed that I feel much better after running than usual. I feel for you Yenniferbangs, it sounds like you're really busy. I'm playing catch up in classes and trying to be ready for exams so my stress level is super high too! I just keep thinking to myself that I only have two more weeks left until I'm done classes...forever. I shouldn't give up now, no matter how tempting. I hope things do settle down for you soon. |

| Ooh, the altitude thing is a very interesting thought. I probably wouldn't have ever crossed my mind (but that's probably because where I live it's flat, flat, and more flat). I can answer it for you though. You're right in thinking that you will weigh more at a lower altitude. But, since the radius of the earth is something like 21 million feet, a drop in altitude from about 1500 ft to sea level would only change your weight about 0.01%. So from your stats, if you weight about 188lbs at home, you'd weight about 188.02 lbs at sea level because of the difference in gravity so unfortunately it's not really a factor here. Phew! I'm happy seven years of physics has finally been useful for something ;) But really, if your clothes are getting too big you're definitely doing something right. I'd totally ignore the thrift store scale if I were you! It may not have been calibrated properly and you were probably wearing all your clothes and shoes. I would probably weigh 7lbs heavy in the middle of the day if I were covered in clothes and had a big lunch. In other news, I'm having trouble with the water challenge. I've been able to do it and I know it's good for me, but I just don't like drinking things period. And, it sort of makes me hungrier. I feel like it flushes out all the food and I'm ready to eat again sooner. Maybe I'll get used to it... |

| Morning! I think that challenge sounds great too, I always have trouble drinking enough water.
mysticdragon: I'm pretty sure 64 oz is just under 2L. And, if I remember correctly, the typical 591mL bottle is 20 oz. That's why they chose a silly number like 591mL instead of just 600mL, since a lot of our bottles come from the states. So I guess you're aiming for just over three bottles a day. Funny how we still use pounds for body weight, isn't it? LW: 163 lbs CW: 161.5 lbs I'm losing faster than I should be for the amount I'm eating, which I'm blaming on the whole exam anxiety problem, my body is just sort of rejecting the food it's given. I'm going to keep a smaller than usual deficit this week, to make sure my body doesn't start to feel deprived and try to gain it all back. I'll make sure I can settle at this weight for a week before I really try to lose more. Slow and steady, right? |

| I've heard that about chewing gum too ladycroft. I wonder how true it is. It makes sense.
When I'm stressed out I usually eat too, just when it's really bad I find I start to feel physically sick and that's when I can't eat. It's only happened a few times so hopefully I won't get that stressed out regularly. A friend of mine gets bloated when she eats lots of fruit, but she's allergic to it. Tomatos, strawberries, citrus anything. She gets hives too. If it's happening really regularly could it be something like lactose or gluten intolerance? You'd probably have a few other symptoms from those. Might just be an off week and you'll feel better soon. |

| Hey guys, my internet connection at home is broken so I haven't been able to get on the site except maybe at lunchtime at work. It's supposed to be fixed tomorrow morning so hopefully it happens. It's strange how much you start to depend on the internet! Anyways, I'm still bogged down with school work so it's been a struggle to eat properly. Luckily (or unluckily?) I'm so stressed with work that I don't have much appetite, so at least I'm not trying to study while thinking about how hungry I am. | |||

| Hey guys, anyone else gearing up for final exams and finding it hard to keep a regular exercise schedule? I'm so busy right now trying to get everything finished. I had to give a 40 minute presentation in one of my classes yesterday so I had an awful weekend trying to put it together. I find it so hard to take time off to exercise if I have so much work to do that I know I'm going to be up half the night trying to finish. I'd rather just keep working until 2am and get some sleep instead of exercising too and having to stay up until 3am, you know?
I suppose the answer is to be a better student, and make sure I get everything done long before the deadline...it's just hard to do all the time :( |

| I have to disagree with you on that one birdy22, I think reasonable amounts of wine can have health benefits and is something in life that is truly worth appreciating but I suppose you only appreciate it if you like it. I think wine is a better choice than light beer or liquor (love tequila!) but I'm with you on avoiding the mixed drinks. I drink pretty infrequently too, quintanion. I got the odd glass of homemade wine too and I make my own now. As far as staple foods, I'm a bit of a cereal addict. Hot, cold, bland--I could eat cereal three times a day and be happy but I mostly just have it for breakfast. Luckily I don't like most of the really awful sugary kinds. Lately, I've been mixing 1/2 cup of fibre1 with a little bit of some other, slightly more appealing kind (multigrain cheerios, special K, corn flakes, even frosted flakes isn't so bad if you don't take too much) to get a more filling version. It's been working to keep me feeling full sooner and longer while still getting my cereal fix. **edit** wrong name! Will pay closer attention :) |

| Congratulations lillysmominpa! I can't wait to see 158, it's been about a year since I've seen the 150's too. Also, I have a TurboJam DVD. I would say you would probably be able to do it without hurting your knees. They have low-impact versions of most exercises that are pretty gentle. I agree with you ktcort13, I sort of have cheat meals but I don't like to call them that and I don't really plan for them. I just try to stick to a healthy diet as best I can and the odd inevitable time that I eat too much or the wrong thing because it's my birthday or my friends go out for an unexpected drink after work I just look at as a good shock to my metabolism and try not to overdo it The hard part is trying not have the unexpected extras happen every day. I guess the idea is that I want to feel balance between being healthy and enjoying food/friends/wine! I hope I never get too obsessed with calories because I like cheesecake too much to never eat it. |

| I eat about 5-7 times a day too, but I definitely focus on the big three or I'll snack too much because I feel like I've missed a meal. Lately I've been having a 250-300 cal breakfast around 7:30am and I usually need a bite of something (~100 cals: a third of a protein bar, a banana, a yogourt, etc) around 10am to keep me from eating too much at lunch. Then I can grab another small snack in the afternoon, especially if I'm going to the gym that day. I never used to do the afternoon snack but I've found it can help me to eat dinner later, so I don't need a snack at night (or as big of a snack), and in the end I'm eating less. | |||

| I have some school-related frustration today! I had a nice healthy breakfast and a good lunch with more protein and fibre than I can usually manage and then...my 2:30pm class went long and ran right into the start of my nuclear cardiology lab, which went extra long. I just got home and it's 8:45pm. I'm trying desperately to not just eat everything I see! My brain needs sugar! I just ate a small piece of bread with oil and vinegar and an ounce of cheese so I'm going to wait a few minutes to let it sink in and then I'll be able to think more clearly and make a good decision. Posting is actually a good way to get my mind off how much I'd like to be eating Nutella out of the jar right about now!
quintanion and ktcort13 - I run too, I think I'm probably about where you are quintanion. I can do about 3 miles in just over 30 minutes. I ran a half marathon last September but then I've been away for a long time and I feel like I'm starting from scratch and can't really believe that I actually did it. I've been running about 2-3 miles every couple days and I'm going to try to build up slowly to be able to do some 5 and 10k's this spring and summer and another half marathon this Sept. I did some shorter races in 2004 but nothing except the half since. I'd like to do some to see how my times compare from then. |

| ktcort13 - I think it's a good suggestion to send messages with challenge ideas and let xzcandizx pick one for the week, it seems like an easy, organized way to do things. But I guess it's really up to xzcandizx. Would you mind that job?
I think sometimes it's a bit easier to stick to challenges that someone else has set for you (ever tried to make imaginary deadlines for yourself in classes where the prof doesn't really set due-dates? Impossible! I always end up handing everything in the last week, it's awful!) mysticdragon - I bought TurboJam on dvd but I've only used it once or twice. Everyone talks about how great it is but I found it sort of awkward, I guess because I was pretty used to a couple of the tae-bo videos I have. I took karate for a long time when I was younger and Billy Blanks moves were all really familiar to my body (and the videos kick my butt, they're so intense and long!) I guess I should give TurboJam another try, I'm sure it would be more fun if I let myself learn the moves. TurboSculpt interests me too because I don't think I'm doing enough strength/weights. |
