Pregnancy & Parenting 37 week appointment update. How are the rest of you? Sep 30 2008

I have my 30 week appointment on Thursday. I can't believe I'm already seeing the OB every 2 weeks! As ready as I am to meet this baby, I don't think I'm ready to be a mom!

Pregnancy & Parenting Flu Shot Sep 26 2008

I see your problem. Whether or not you get it won't help baby, but maybe having your 4yo "shot" will prevent the whole family from getting sick. I have no help for you, sorry.

There was a recent medical article saying there is some protective advantage to babies whose mothers got the flu shot while pregnant. I'm planning on asking my OB about this next week. I get the shot at work almost every year, but have no experience with kids getting it. Good Luck.

Pregnancy & Parenting Cloth Diapers Sep 24 2008

Can anyone give me an idea of how much they spend a month on disposables (in canda if possible)?  I am seriously considering a diaper service but it is pricey and want to be able to compare to disposables. TIA!

Pregnancy & Parenting How much did you gain in the first trimester? Sep 18 2008

I gained 6 lbs in my first trimester. At each OB visit asked about my weight gain and MY OB wasn't worried. One visit I had a "fill-in" and he gave me a mini lecture about my weight and suggested I cut out white things - white bread, potatoes, refined sugar, white rice. The next OB visit with my doctor, she said that she didn't know why he did that and that baby would be as big as baby would be and that the extra weight would just mean more to lose afterwards. I had gained 38lbs at 28 weeks. I'm a little less concerned now. As long as baby is healthy and I'm healthy, I'm trying to moderate more and worry less. I know I can lose the weight (I've done it before) so I'm going to try to go with the flow.

Good luck - try not to stress - and enjoy your pregnancy!

Don't expect to hear a heart beat before 12 to 14 weeks. Hubby was very disappointed to come to the boring appointments expecting to hear something and.... nothing!

hubby thinks it's cool. thankfully he is totally into me being pregnant and wants to know everything (as long as I don't try to make him read it in a book!). he says it is just my body getting ready to be a mommy.

thanks everyone! i wasn't sure if it was too early to have colostrum. this is the strangest part of the pregnancy so far. i can handle feeling baby move and even the nausea and vomitting haven't freaked me out. this is totally different, but at leas i know it's normal and i don't have to run out to the OB!

Pregnancy & Parenting Morning sickness ALL DAY LONG Aug 22 2008

You sound exactly like ME! I felt crappy until about 20 weeks, but it was tapering at 16 weeks. I too had the fast food cravings. I take Diclectin (only available in Canada - I think) and unfortunately gave into the fast food. I am now 24 weeks, and gained 35 pounds. I thought the nausea and vomitting would keep the weight off, but I guess eating burgers and fries overcame that. I'm now able to eat better, although I am now ravenous all the time.

Hang in there. TRY to eat healthy. We don't know the sex either, so I can't predict if your cravings/sickness is gender specific... Good Luck!

I had my 24 week appointment with a different OB (covering for mine). He was concerned enough to mention my weight before I did. I have gained over 35lbs so far. His suggestion was to cut out white things: potato, bread, rice, refined sugar. To eat a small amount of protein with every meal and only eat veggies that grow above ground. I'll do my best to restrict white stuff, and try to eat more protein, but I can't give up carrots. I am SO hungry!

We are thinking of Audrey or Emilie for a girl.

COMPLETELY stumped for a boy.  I'm watching for suggestions!

I am 23 weeks tomorrow and have managed 28 pounds even with the extreme sickness and food aversions! I guess that is what a "toast and eggo" diet does to a girl :(

Now that I'm feeling better, I'm eating better - mostly. And I've started tracking calories again. So I hope to keep the gain to 0.5 to 1 pounds per week for the next 17 weeks. I'll still be looking at a 40 to 50 pound weight gain, but hopefully I'll stay healthy and can work it off post-baby.

thanks for the reference, i had never heard of this. is it possible to decrease the likelihood of cavities thru good oral hygiene? i plan on beginnign a routine with baby right from the beginning even before teeth have erupted. i'm not in the dental field, but have great respect for my teeth and health.

I'd love to see the study that shows that sharing food/utensils causes tooth decay. I'll buy putting them to bed with juice/milk, but having a bite of grape then sharing...

Hi Vanessa. Have you tried any internet searches for aids to labor? i was reading something the other day (on What to Expect i think) that suggested body positions that will encourage proper baby positioning. One was rocking on hands and kees for 10 minutes a day every day. Might want to check it out.

Your FETAL AGE is 3 weeks, but you are 5 weeks pregnant. Confusing, but most everyone I know says how pregnant they are not the fetal age. For example, I am 19 weeks pregnant, but my fetal age is 17 weeks. Clear as mud?!?

We were at a football game last night and saw a couple wearing their kids. The 3 month old was VERY comfy in his maya wrap, and his big sister (toddler) was happily carried by dad in a mei tai. Both looked very content and worked great in the post game crowd. I'll definately be looking at these two products for our little one.

I am doing better now, thank you. I try to eat every couple hours (especially in the morning) and my doctor put me on diclectin. I am 10 weeks now and the nausea is managable and vomiting is becoming increasingly rare. I am functioning - and looking forward to a healthy baby!

Pregnancy & Parenting Skincare Products: What can I use? May 01 2008

I see no one else has definitive answers for you, so I'll chime in. I seem to remember that Salicylic Acid products are a no-no during pregnancy. I have read so much that I am not sure which book/web site i read that on, but it is sticking out in my head. However, I don't have any alternatives for you either. Not very helpful I'm afraid.

i am early in the weight gain department, but already very aware. i am only 7 weeks, but have gained 5 pounds! it isn't just the weight, but how poorly i am eating. i have pretty severe nausea all day long, so when i actually think of something that sounds appealing - i eat it. unfortunately that is mostly toast and crackers (hello carbs!). i also am too nauseous to go to the gym. i hope this will all pass soon so i can start feeling good about myself again.

don't worry too much about the scale. try to focus on healthy eating and happy baby! Congrats!

Thanks everyone. And thanks for the encouragement to celebrate just the two of us. It has been HARD, and will continue to be difficult. I am so terrified something bad will happen, and can't imagine having to share THAT with everyone too. For now, I'll focus on the celebration part.

Hi. DH and I are in a similar position. We thought we were doing everything right but still no luck. I found the web site fertilityfriend.com and started tracking my temps. It is free for 1 month, then a charge for the advanced settings. At least now I am more confident that we are timing things better, less guessing. Who knows, maybe this month is the month we get lucky!
