At first the majority of it does go to your stomach. But as you continue to eat well and move onto maintance the weight starts to distribute and look well...normal. The "pregnant" look only lasts in the beginning. Promise!

Hi! Hope everyone is hanging in there and staying strong!

I'm in recovery and over the past 2 months I'd been doing really well! Maintaining weight. Eating enough calories. Limited behavior use. Recently some behaviors have resurfaced. Behaviors I haven't used in years! It's embarassing and I hate it so much. I don't know what to do with myself. This is more or less me just venting. I'm commited to making today a good day. So this is my reliability!

We're exactly the same! I'm way excited. I'm also 17, 5'7 and 125. However I'm working on maintance and not trying to lose any weight. If you ever want to talk about meal plans or calorie amounts, exercise, whatever, I'm always up for some good food talk!

I've been on Cymbalta for about 8 months with no noticable side effects. With that being said, I've also been on a number of other anti-depressants and have experienced few to no side effects as well. Supposedly Cymbalta can be compared to a milder version of Effexor. However, if you're experiencing sleeping and panic difficulties what about sleeping medication and an anti-anxiety?

Hi. I replied to your post on the ED Recovery 2 Board but I thought I'd reply directly to the question on here too. I know when I was in a treatment facility and going through the process of weight restoration I was eating 2900 calories a day. However patients were eating a range of 2200-5000 calories a day in order to gain weight.  I'd suggest working towards eating a minimum of 2000 calories a day for a week. See where you are then and then slowly continue to increase your calories. Your body WILL adjust to the increase in nutrients and your metabolism will pick up. Try to work on getting in enough fats. I know that's troubling but try to get in maybe 8 or so servings of fat. Aim for 5 fruits, 2 veggies, 4 dairy servings, 6 proteins, around 12 servings of starch. If you ever need any help with meal planning or setting things up just let me know! I have AIM if you ever want to talk - or email. Hang in there and keep fighting. Recovery will be worth it!

It is SO good to have an actual recovery based post. I've been working really hard these past six or seven months in recovery since being discharged from treatment. It's way hard! I've surely had my fair share of slips since then and I hate it. But I'm still trying. Still fighting. And this is definetly a fight. If anyone ever wants to talk let me know. I would love support and to give support as well.

carmenxox - While on weight gain I found that eating a variety of fats, carbs, proteins, fruits, veggies, and milks was very successful. I know personally I'm supposed to eat more than 1600 to maintain. When I was on weight gain I was eating at least 2700 calories a day. It's hard but necessary.

Yay for recovery!! First let me start by saying NOTHING you're experiencing is out of the ordinary. It's uncomfortable but it's not uncommon by any means.

Several months ago I went through a very fast paced weight restoration in a residential treatment center and gained about 25 pounds over maybe 3 months. Much of this weigh did physically go to my stomach. And then to the other places where 'normal' people would acquire fat. Thighs, arms, my face, etc. However by the time I went home at the stabilized weight, my body had begun to redistribute the weight and within a month or so the weight was relatively evenly distributed.

Ah the binging. I went through this too. I felt like it was almost okay to eat whatever I wanted because I HAD to gain the weight anyway. However I think a good deal of the causes of the binging as to do with mere restriction. We deprive ourselves for so long that when we allow ourselves to finally eat these foods, that our bodies have craved for so long, we tend to binge on them. I think it's almost to be expected. I found that over time my desire for theses foods lessened and I no longer craved them to the degree I once had. That made it easier to, once I needed to, lower my calories to a maintaince level.

Take this day by day. Don't give up. Slips are bound to happen. It's all about picking yourself back up.

I had my gall bladder removed laproscopically. I don't know if that's what you're referring to. But I had it done on a Thursday and was back in school that Monday. I stayed in the hospital overnight because there were many complications regarding my gall bladder before the surgery. However most people are in and out in one day. It was completely painless and I only have about four little eraser-size marks to show for it!

I'm not sure but I know when I was put in the hospital for anorexia they started me off at a meal plan of 1200 calories and I was increased by 200 calories every two days. However I know that for some girls who came in very severely malnourished they're intake was increased at a slower rate. If you've been eating around 1000 calories I would think you're safe increasing every few days so you get up to 2000 (or whatever your ideal calorie intake is) within a week or two. Your metabolism will bounce back though. Just be patient! It takes time!

I know weight restoration is such a frustrating process. I just went through it this past winter. I went into an eating disorder treatment program and gained 25 pounds over just 3 months. Yeah. That's right. It was a lot of weight in a short amount of time and just SO overwhelming. But now I'm really dealing okay with it. I'm getting used to my healthier body and it's not nearly as bad. It's still uncomfortable and my body image is still a wreck but I'm handling it. It gets easier. You just have to hang in there!

I understand where you're coming from. I recently just spent a good amount of time on a weight gain meal plan and once I hit my weight range I was allowed to decrease it. Honestly, I found it to be a relief. I was given the option of decreasing my calories or adding in exercise. So perhaps that could be an option for you. Unless excessive exercise was an issue. But going back to a maintaining plan didn't seem to cause any problems for me. It made me feel more "normal" because finally I was eating like other people! It feels good. The calorie issue...I struggle with that myself. Try to eat foods that aren't packaged with nutrition labels. Or buying new brands of food and ripping off the labels. While you'll still have an idea of the calorie range, you won't know the exact amount and that might be helpful. Hang in there and keep fighting!

I'm on topamax. I've been on it for well over a year now and have had no side effects whatsoever. While I was originally put on it to aid my anti-depressants, I also suffer from intense headaches and topamax really helped. I still get them pretty frequently as my dose is relatively low, but they're no longer nearing migraines as far as intensity. With a few advil they're almost managable!

I know it's possible. I know people who have recovered. Who now lead lives that do not revolve around food. It's not easy but it IS by all means possible. It has to be.

Do you have AIM or anything you would be able to talk on?

I am so sorry. I wish my condolences could rid your sadness but I know it can't. I lost a friend of mine this past December...6 months is just around the corner. It's weird because I too struggle with well an eating disorder. I've processed her death over and over again in therapy. But at times I'm still overcome with the depressive nature of the event. And I think there's no way around that. It's okay to be sad and it's okay to cry. I think it's about allowing yourself to feel that way..validating your emotions. You have no reason to numb them out by overeating. But I know sometimes it gets to the point where you just can't cry another tear. And I think that is when distractions can be very helpful. I've recently begun using reading as an escape. A temporary getaway. Or go for a walk. Anything that will take you outside of your head. Just remember that the numbing sensation the food provides is temporary.  You're allowed to feel. Give yourself permission.

I was really excited to find this post. For the past three or so years I've been struggling with Anorexic and Bulimic symptoms.   I've been diagnosed with both over the past two years that I've spent in and out of treatment centers. It's so rough. Right now I am being threatened again with hospitalization and am trying desperately to avoid it.

Is anyone working towards a solid state of recovery? I could really use like a "meal plan buddy". Almost the opposite of a diet buddy I suppose!!! Someone to talk about what I'm eating, where I'm struggling. If anyone is interested let me know.

Stay strong and keep fighting.

Room for one more? I'm 5'7 and 126. Looking to get to 112 and stay there. Absolutly no lower, but hey I want to look good! This past week I lost 2 pounds which I was pretty proud of considering my weight loss had pretty much stopped over the past six or so months. Want to change that!! I'm down from about 165.

when trying to lose weight 1500 is generally reccommended (remember you're a teenager!) but thats when you're only doing about 20-30 minutes of activity a day.  for every extra 30 minutes of activity add 250 calories.

My guess is you're not consuming enough calories.  To maintain your weight you should be eating about 1700 calories.  During soccer (depending how long practices are) you should be getting in about 2400 calories.  Boost drinks will give you about 240 calories or you can do Power Bars which have 230 calories.  But how many calories are you eating now?

Hi.  I am not a nutritionist but I have been seeing one weekly for the past year.  Like you, I struggle with an eating disorder.  Over the last few years it has gone back and forth between anorexia and bulimia and after being hospitalized for 2 weeks in May, I am finally in early stages of recovery.

The point of this post: Over my many sessions in the nutritionist's office, I have learned a great deal about making meal plans and how many calories are needed based on different indicators.  If you'd like help setting something up, I'd be more than happy to fill you in on the basics and help you get up to a maintaince calorie level.

Oh ok! It's good to know I'm not the only one maintaining on 1700+ calories a day.  For those of you struggling to reach the right amount of maintaince calories, I found that Luna Bars help me get in all my nutrients.  They're 180 calories and they have about 5g fat, 25g carbs, and 10g protein!!! They're really tasty too!
