Weight Loss calorie intake: about.com vs. cc+ Aug 12 2008

If you are in a country other than the US, the calorie counts on packaged foods can vary significantly.  I live in Canada and many packaged foods that appear to be exactly what CC describes (brand, flavour etc.) have markedly different nutritional values.  One factor is what each country allows in the food production.....the ingredients will vary.

I always go by what the package says and add it manually using the form provided at the food log page.

Drinking alcohol dehydrates you.  A lot of what you feel when you have a hangover is the effects of dehydration....hence the fuzzy-tongue feeling.

Plus, most bathroom scales will vary by a bit just because they have a margin of error.

I am 38 yrs old and 5'7".  I currently weigh 185.

The site says my goal weight should be 143, but I don't think that is realistic.  As my father always says, I am built like a brick outhouse.

I would be happy with 159.  At that weight, I could comfortably wear a bikini and feel like I look pretty good.  That's the same weight that I was when I graduated from high school and when I got married 10 years later.

I haven't been less than that since Grade 11 when I dieted down to 135....it was impossible to maintain......supermodel proportions on my large frame.

Tell 'em that you're being paid $1000 a week to test a new trial diet method, but as  part of the contract you are forbidden to discuss the details.

Hi,

I'm not completely new to Calorie Count but I have been away for over a year, I think. I thought I was ready to go things alone but quickly found myself having gained 40 of the 70 pounds I lost. So bascially here I am trying to get myself back on track again.

Take care,

Tonya

Gee Tonya, your story sounds so familiar.  I did the same thing pretty much.  It's frustrating that I allowed myself to gain so much back.  I was so close to my goal.

Hope you have a good week!

Finding a good doctor is sometimes hard.  They can be so dismissive and judgmental.  I know exactly what you mean.  I am fortunate to have a good doctor right now.  I am very good friends with his wife, so he knows me well enough to know that I would only come to him if I had legitimate concerns.  It is frustrating when they don't take your concerns seriously.

You CAN do this.  You just need to believe in yourself!  I will add you as a friend......

Hello Ladies....are you still taking new people to your group?

I am 38, 5 kids (6-15 yrs old), half way to my goal, currently 185 and my goal is 159.  Was originally 213.

I am a bit stuck and I am looking for a new perspective and some new buddies (most of my old ones don't come around much anymore....).

Thanks for all the great replies and insight everyone.  I read every comment and it certainly gave me some food for thought and made me feel like I wasn't living in the dark ages.

I appreciate the forbidden fruit comments and from my own experience I understand where you're coming from.  I have never told my daughter that she cannot ever go to the parties - just that I think 13 y/o is too young to start.  She is allowed to taste alcohol if she asks for a sip to "try it" and at easter, I did allow her to have a splash of wine with dinner (which she didn't even touch because she said it smelled bad).  I have read that in countries where it is commonplace for young people to have wine with dinner, that the alcoholism rates are significantly lower.  I don't know how much truth there is to that, but it does bolster the forbidden fruit theory.

However, I will look for the book Primal Teen and read up on that - perhaps that will change my mind.  I am always looking for good information.

I have talked to numerous people about this including the local school principal.   What it comes down to is...I trust my 13 y/o very much - I do NOT trust my DRUNK 13 y/o (or her friends for that matter).  Gosh, I don't even trust MYSELF when I'm drunk (which is practically never.......).

For me, 13 is too young to be "partying".  I have drawn my line and will not cross it.  I didn't spend the last 13 years of my life throwing myself into raising good kids to walk away now.... :)

I let my daughter throw her own party a few nights ago.  With the caveat that there would be NO alcohol tolerated.  She invited a bunch of local kids over and they had a campfire in the back yard, roasted marshmallows, played music, played kick the can and generally seemed to have a ball.  One of the boys even emailed the next day to thank my husband and I for a great time.

I made my daughter go and talk to the neighbors before the party started to let them know what was happening, what time it would end (10:30) and that if they were too loud to please let us know.

I think it was a huge success!!  All is good.  It's funny - it seems like everytime I make a decision like this that makes my teenager mad....it draws us closer in the end.  It's like an affirmation that she knows how much I love her and want the best for her.

One teenager down and 4 to go...what did I get myself into???? LOL

Well, I tried something new this week compliments of my physiotherapist who is helping me recover from the car accident.  She has me doing "broom exercises" everyday day (passive upper body movement) and some easy resistance band exercises.  So that's 2 new things for me :)

I would love to do aquaaerobics - no pool where I live though.  :(

Sorry team. I forgot to figure out and post my points for last week.  I will do better this week.

Hello Kristine!  And welcome!

I am really struggling with staying on track lately.  With the bad car accident I had a less than 3 weeks ago, I not only am having trouble exercising due to injury, but I am eating everything in sight to cope with the stress.  It is not pretty.  I need to get it together!!

Sorry team, but no cardio for me for now.

I rolled my Suburban down a 20 foot cliff yesterday while going 60 mph and with my 3 kids in the back seat.  Luckily we are all here to tell the tale.....but cardio is out of the question for a few days!!

Maybe I'll make up for it and lose 6 lbs just from sheer fright!!
