Weight Loss More calorie advice... Oct 06 2009

I wouldn't deprive yourself all week, but you could try a sort of calorie cycling. What is it that you are going over your calories on? Can you try to bring a healthy snack to share with your friends so you have a guilt free snack, or what about eating before you go out so you are less likely to indulge?

Weight Loss Low-Carb Diets? Sep 18 2009

Original Post by nicole318:

Low carb is a way of life, not a quick fix. If you go on a low carb "diet" and then return to eating chips and fries and bread 2 weeks later, then yes, you will replenish all the water weight you have lost in those two weeks.

However, when you live a low carb life, and your body is used to converting fat into fuel, you are actually burning fat and you lose real weight. our bodies can only hold so much water weight, so the majority of the weight you lose when eating low carb is fat.

Living a low carn life does allow for slipups, and you might gain a few pounds of water weight after a major cheat, but if you go right back to it, that water weight will fall off in a few days.

That being said, you can't slip up every other day and think you are living a low carb life.

Low carb really is not a way of life, it's a fad diet.  An unhealthy one at that.  The problem is that so many people have done low carb diets and lost weight quickly and now people think that it's a nutritional standard for losing weight.  What isn't said about low carb diets is that 90% of the people that are on them can't stick to it and all gain the weight back.  New people come to this site and the first thing they post about is low carbs and low fat.  Neither have anything to do with healthy weight loss.  Your body needs carbs every day,  to fuel it's self to have the energy you need.  Any diet that promotes eliminating an entire food group is just wrong. Fruit is full of carbs, do you honestly believe that eliminating them from your diet is healthy?

Will you lose weight cutting all the carbs out of your diet?  Probably.   Will you gain all the weight back if you fall off of it?   Probably.  With those kind of odds,  why not just do Hydroxycut?  or the Acai berry diet, or the hollywood drink diet.  It's all BS.   Learn how to eat balanced, healthy diet consisting of natural, unprocessed foods and it will be much easier to stay within your calorie allowances and lose the weight you want to lose.  Learn about macronutrient ratios, what your body needs and WHY it needs it and stop following dumb advice and fad diets.

Well, a way of life is NOT a fad actually. It is the way I choose to live my life. I get plenty of carbs from fruit and veggies and there is no reason I need to eat wheat or grains. I don't live off meat alone. Sorry, but you are being duped by the government telling you that whole grains are needed. Do tribes in the Amazon eat cereal and bread? NOPE. Did our ancestors need grains- NOPE! Not until about 10,000 years ago did anyone even eat grains. So please don't tell me I need them.

Why do so many people have wheat allergies, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, if grains are SOOOOO important and we need them?

You should do some research of your own instead of listening to what Kellogs tells you.

I have a GREAT maco nutrient ratio from no grains or sugar and I feel awesome. I am size 4, I have a ton of energy and I sleep like a baby. My glucose, cholestrol and blood pressure are to be envied.

It is not following DUMB advice, it is making an informed choice on how I choose to live MY life.

I love my Polar F6 as well. It has all the feature I want and it comes in pink! Always a plus in my book.

I got mine at a sporting goods store for about $100. I use it every time I work out!

I follow a low carb diet and the research I have done on it makes me feel that it is the most healthy and safe way to live.

I eat meat, eggs, veggies, fruit, nuts and cheese. I avoid bread, potatos, rice and legumes.

Weight Loss Low Carb or Low Fat? Sep 17 2009

Your body needs fat. Fat makes you feel full and satisfied. I would rather cut down on processed food and sugar and carbs and eat full fat REAL foods. I don't eat any grains, rice or potatos. I don't eat legumes. I eat lots of meat, nuts, veggies, fruits, even full fat cheese and I am still losing weight.

I have found great sucess eating this way. I have read a lot of books on Paleo?Primal living and I feel that this is the best way for me to live.

Research The Primal Blueprint or marksdailyapple.com. I am in no way affiliated with them, but they have really turned me on to a whole new way of life.

I agree with Claudeb- it really is 80% diet and 20% exercise!!!

Normally i work out 4-5 times a week. I do the elliptical, the stairmill (that thing is awesome) and I just started spinning. I also take Body Pump classes or take bootcamp classes a couple days a week.

vbalboa- I was in the same boat as you, no matter how many calories I ate and how many times I worked out a week, I wasn't losing weight until I started cutting carbs. That is what works for my body!!!! Now I eat 1400- 1800 cals a day and I still lose weight.

For a protein-filled dinner that is not very expensive, you can buy frozen fish filets at the grocery store, watch for sales and you can get salmon or tilapia for a good price. I also love egg white scrambles as a quick go-to dinner when I am really busy. Add in cheese, veggies, some ham or bacon and you have a full meal, very low in calories too.

On that same idea, I love making frittatas, which is basically a crustless quiche. I make them with egg whites, veggies and cheese and you bake it. My fiance actually loves it when I make frittatas for dinner!

I also like to snack, I will make a fruit, cheese and veggie plate with apples, some pb, some veggies and some cheese and just nosh on that for dinner. Oh- and I love turkey pepperoni (although high in sodium).

Jules- if you are working out 5/6 days a week you need to eat a lot more than 1200 calories. That is the minimum and you could actually be making it harder to lose weight by eating so little. Try calorie cycling, one day at 1200, one day at 1400, one day at 1800 and repeat. Keep your body guessing, but keep it fuled!!!

Sample menu:

Breakfast- Egg whites and center cut bacon

Snack- string cheese or cottage cheese

Lunch- spinach salad with chicken, fish or steak, lots of veggies, low sugar dressing. I will also add goat cheese, feta or gorgonzola sometimes.

snack- almonds or an apple with PB

Dinner- chicken, fish or steak- grilled with a side of green beans, broccoli or zucchini

PM snack- ricotta creme dessert (1/2 cup ricotta mixed with 1 packet splenda and 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract) or sugar free jello.

I don't eat bread, pasta, rice or potatos. I get lots of healthy carbs from fruits and veggies but avoid starches and sugar.

I eat lean protein, nuts, cheese, fruits and veggies. It is more of a lifestyle than a diet. I suffer from IBS and this way of eating is the only thing that has helped, so not only do I feel better, but I am steadily losing weight.

I agree with that1grrl- if you read The Primal Blueprint it talks about how humans survived and we strong and lean from just eating veggies and fruit and nuts and protiens. I have been eating low carb, and I get plenty of good carbs from all the veggies I eat. I never go into ketosis because I never restrict how many carbs I eat- just the types.

The restaurant I am going to doesn't give me the option of getting baked sweet potato. I wanted to indulge in fries and wanted to know if sweet potato were healthier. I actually prefer sweet potato fries.

nighttime snack (not always)

I just never really feel FULL. I eat lots of protein, complex carbs, healthy fats. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies, and greek yogurt.

No, I explained it wrong. When I add my exercise into CC, it gives me a total burn for the day being 1800.

I only burn 300-400 a workout.

Weight Loss Post-Honeymoon Blues.. Need Help :( Jun 30 2009

Don't get down on yourself, you lost the weight once, and you CAN do it again!! You just had an amazing honeymoon and you deserved to enjoy it. I am getting married in 6 months and plan to enjoy myself on my 10 night honeymoon as well.

Just start counting your calories again, log all your food. Take it one day at a time. I bet if you start eating healthy, fruits, veggies, lean protein, complex carbs, you will see a few pounds fall right off because a lot of your gain is water weight.

Focus on cardio, add a few extra minutes to get a little extra calorie burn.

Just start over from scratch, like this is day 1 for you on Calorie Count. Don't do anything like a cleanse, all that will do is make you drop water weight that will come right back on once you eat again. Give yourself two weeks, I bet you can drop that weight.

Nicole, thank you so much! Our stats are almost identical!! - I am 28y.o. I had a feeling that 1700/day is too shy... What is your goal weight if you don't mind me asking? Also, are you experiencing steady weight loss each week (that is if your goal is to  lose weigh...)

Thanks again!

My goal weight is 115. I was experiencing steady loss, but then I took a few months off to kind of indulge, so now I am back to eating right and working out.

Ever since I cut back on sugar and processed carbs I have seen a better result!!!
