P.S: Is almost 19 considered still a "teenager", as in still needing calories to grow? I'll be 19 on the 14th of October.

How much do you think I could increase my caloric intake while still maintaining?

I want to eat enough to control my cravings, but I would like to maintain my current weight. 1500 calories currently lets me do that, but I always hear of people upping their calories and giving their metabolism a kick. I'm not looking to lose, I just want to stay the same.

Any advice?

I try to keep my calories to around 1500 per day. I am very sedentary (living the college life).

Health & Support I overeat once a week... how detrimental is it to my diet, if at all? Oct 02 2008

Don't sweat it. That's nothing.

About 3 or 4 times a week, I eat about 1-2000 calories over my daily allotment (sp?), and my weight hasn't changed much.

If you are exercising regularly and sticking to a generally healthy diet then I see no problem. However, if this is interfering with your daily activities and/or causing your weight to creep up, I would make some adjustments. Overall, I don't think it's too big of a deal, though :)

Motivation binge.. should i eat? Aug 11 2008
05:46 (UTC)

my binges are usually all on healthy and/or low cal food: fruit (especially frozen), high fiber tortillas/bread, cottage cheese, bowls of fiber one (resulting in lots of quality time with magazines in the restroom), veggies, lunch meat, tuna, chicken breast, and the like.

Foods Things you wish you could get in 100 calorie packs... Aug 06 2008

i think that if 100 calorie packs is all you eat, then there is a problem.

but sometimes i want to indulge in not-so-good-for-me foods, and portion control is nice. especially since, at times, i cannot be trusted with an entire box of something.

basically, they are good because they're convenient. most 100 calorie packs are not more or less healthy, but they are eye openers when it comes to portion sizing and nice to have around, in small doses.

100 calorie pizzas would be sort of nice.... doughnuts. pie. the list goes on.

not saying eating these would be healthier than a banana or an apple, but sometimes i just have a craving and want it. 100 calorie packs can help me resist the temptation to overindulge while giving me a little taste of what i want. everything in moderation, folks.

also, not to sound rude here, but the topic of this thread is "Things you wish you could get in 100 calorie packs". Not "Why 100 calorie packs aren't all they're cracked up to be". Embarassed

I'm lazy and don't really like getting measuring spoons out for everything, so I think it would be nice to get squirt it and be done!

That seems to me to be bit of a waste of packaging considering the use of measuring spoons isn't all that complicated.  But whatever works for you.

Well, when you put it that way... I suppose it would just be easier to get my butt in gear and take a few extra movements to pick up a measuring spoon. Good for the environment and my wallet as well (broke college student speaking here). You have to admit, its a clever gimmick though.

And I'm not sure why pre-portioned olive oil would be an advantage.  I mean, is there really a need to take prepacked olive oil out to a restaurant?  I only use it when I cook at home, where I measure it out anyway.

That's what I meant. I want pre portioned packets of olive oil that i can buy at the grocery store and use at home. I'm lazy and don't really like getting measuring spoons out for everything, so I think it would be nice to get squirt it and be done! When I mentioned the fast food restaurants, I was referring to the packaging they use for the ketchup and mustard that customers can just grab on their way out.

Lol. I wouldn't want to take olive oil to a restaurant either. Most use enough oil and butter as it is :)

The Lounge ...too thin? Jul 28 2008

sorry, i know this was posted a while ago, but i just wanted to respond:

the bottom line is that a vast majority of the media, particularly high fashion, promotes a body type that is unnaturally thin. i don't care if some models are "naturally" like that. most people aren't. advertisements make them feel like they should be. that's a problem.

eugrrrlll, I don't think you were thin bashing. Instead you're helping to reveal the hidden part of the "glamor" that we see every day in the media. Although so many people today (myself included!) do need to lose weight to be healthy,  a healthy weight is just that, and not the emaciation required of models. Women trapped into starving themselves, whether directly because of the fashion industry's demands, or indirectly, need to hear the message that this is not ok. (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16598988/)

And those of us in need of weight loss need that same reminder too, not to get carried away, but to stop losing when we've hit a healthy weight.

 This says it all.

i agree. couldn't have said it better myself :)

heh... yea it was, but by the way blapityblap... there is such a thing as fat fetishism, especially nowadays on youtube... and these people are literally trying to gorge themselves to get fat, cause fat squishing is apparently a gorgeous sight to behold for people with fat fetishes. that's equally disturbing, and just as unhealthy if you ask me... it's like trading in one unhealthy obsession for another. >"<

and by the way, i do have a friend who's 5'9" (not 5'10" regrettably, but it's hard to find a 5'10" asian) and she has a BMI of 15.5. She has never gone on a diet in her life, eats just like any normal person, and loves desserts in particular. I've never seen her need to go purge after eating, and it's a close group of people that we usually hang around in school. she's always having lunch/dinner with someone or another (ie., she eats at least 2 meals a day, if it does happen that she eats nothing else whatsoever when she's home)... and she's never weighed a few pounds more or less than this since she was about 18, though she has absolutely no idea what sort of stuff is calorie dense and what's not (doesn't read nutrition labels). she just... maintains by following her appetite... so yea, such people exist too.

doedoebird, i think it's safe to say you have proven me wrong.
but once again, does this friend look sick to you? probably not, because she is healthy.  in most (saying MOST, here) designer runway models i see, you can tell that they are starving themselves. at least, i can. you can see it in their eyes. they look tired, their skin color looks off to me (dull). yes, these women/girls are sick and do have a problem, and i think the media is sick for promoting this only because thin=money. do they realize what they are doing to some womens' self esteem?

i also agree that being underweight and overweight has it's health risks. personally, i think being underweight is more publicized as being beautiful, especially in the high fashion world.. which is what many young women look to for inspiration for how they should look. and, seeing women who are that thin portrayed as beautiful and superior can be triggering to someone already suffering from an eating disorder.

eating disorders are terrible diseases, and i'm rooting for anyone who has one (both underweight and not) to overcome it. but that's a whole other topic.

i don't think that "thin bashing" is the same as "fat bashing".

these models starve themselves to look that way. they do it intentionally, even though i doubt they enjoy it. they want their bones to stick out. it means money. i rarely see someone who is overweight shoving food in their mouths thinking "i HAVE to get bigger!!!".

i don't think the original poster was trying to discourage their body types, i think she was expressing how frustrated she is with the idea that skeleton thin= beautiful. and i whole heartedly agree with her.

and i don't care about models who say they are "naturally" thin. that's a load of.. well, something gross.  if they were naturally that thin, their bones would not be sticking out. their faces wouldn't be sunken in. they would look healthy. and i have never seen anyone who is 5'10" with a BMI of 15.5 who is "naturally" that way. if anyone knows of on, please let me know, as i would just love to meet them.

turkey, hot dogs, eggs, yogurt, ice cream, chicken.. lots of dairy products and protein stuff there, is it possible you could be missing them from your diet? similarly you binged on lots of carbs, are you eating enough on a daily basis? if you find yourself craving something, or bingeing, it can sometimes be because you're not getting enough of it. when i have a balanced diet i find the urge to overeat comes a lot less. :)

i actually plan to eat those things. for some reason i feel just an eensy bit less guilty if i balance out the foods and eat lots of lean protein. unfortunately, i use it as an excuse to eat more.

P.S.: another binge day, again topping 5000 calories :(((((((((((((

it was a lot of healthy/low cal stuff that i binged on. i don't remember exact amounts or anything, but i binged on healthy choice fudge bars, sliced turkey breast, apples, wasa crackers, blueberries, turkey hot dogs, egg whites, fage total 0 yogurt, la tortilla factory tortillas, luna bars, sugarfree gum (even though i don't count it, i chewed through like 2 packs to help myself stop), fiber one cereal, oroweat light bread, fat free ice cream, cooked chicken breast grilled strips.. basically everything in the kitchen area of my dorm :( even though none of it was really "junk" food, it was a lot of food and it really adds up. not to mention low cal foods have more volume, so i looked like i was pregnant!!!

Blapity, I do the savory oatmeal thing too, except I do it as a whole meal.  I call it my "oatmeal vegetable casserole" and it is fantastic.  I stir in steamed broccoli and cauliflower florets, carrots, peas, corn, garlic, and parmesan cheese.  Then I bake it in the oven.  It is delicious!

and i thought i was weird! i am SO adding you as a friend :)

i like to use my oatmeal as a side dish, like rice.

stir in:

minced garlic, shredded carrots, frozen green peas and diced cooked chicken or ham

diced tomatoes, green onions, monterey jack cheese and cilantro.  or, instead of diced tomatoes, try adding your favorite salsa.

sautéed chopped portobello mushrooms and toasted chopped pecans.  top with crumbled feta cheese.

yuppee!
