glad that you could relate. sucks don't it?

and congrats to you on the dread-choppage. impressive that you could cut only half off! i'd had mine for 2 years so they were pretty tight.. short short hair for me! (although now i'm growing it out)

i am having another problem sorta similar to this. last summer when i happily lost 10 pounds it wasn;'t that hard at all.. i was working part time, seeing friends here and there, it was pretty chill - and i could easily find time to work out.

now... i am working full time, seeing friends more it seems, doing other stuff.. playing gigs, rehearsing, moving out in 2 weeks, i am just SO BUSY! i like being active and doing a lot, but it's also stressful, and it's making the weight loss thing pretty tough...

i think i've given up and decided to exercise in the mornings even though i hate it and am such not a morning person.. but i can't find any other time.

any tips though? i am just finding this so much harder when i am so busy doing things all the time. stress does not make me want to eat little and excersise a lot. the opposite in fact...

hi taylor, thanks! i know this post is old, but meh.

taking your son backpacking sounds like a great idea. i had a lot of fun in europe with my dad, he's quite the adventurous guy. :P

and awesome about the guitar. i play piano primarily, but i can also squeeze out a few songs on the guitar. it's a good instrument to learn, good luck!

and thanks very mcuh, yeah my baby bros are pretty hilarious. they're much older now than in that pic (i revert to the update needage again) and even recently came back from france saying some of their first words.. "allo!" lol

anyway, cheers
Fitness Confused!! about exercise cals burned Jul 16 2007
04:10 (UTC)
thanks, that sorta helped... hehe.

but i'm not worried about calculating how many calories i burn on the job. i've decided to forget that concept entirely and base my excersize soley off "real" excersize - ie. biking, jogging, weight training etc. (if i do have a particulary strenuous day at work i'll of course take that into consideration)

however, like you were saying when you were talking about becoming more fit and burning less when exercizing etc., that's precisely what i'm wondering about.

i'm not talking about wearing it all day, but i'm wondering if the gadget can accurately calculate how much you burn in any excersise activity. say a 20 minute jog - can it access your speed (even if it fluctuates),  heart rate, and anything that will reflect how much you burn, and then the total number of cals burned? can it also "understand" the decrease in cals burned as you become "better" or "more used" to a certain activity?

can it also calculate cals burned with weight training?

(sorry for the relentless questions, i'm just trying to understand this product, and see if it does what i need!)

ha, i know this post is old, but i decided to ressurect it.

just to be clear.. this device tells you how many calories you are burning no matter what activity you are doing? i could play piano and it could tell me, i could jog and it could tell me, i could eat a steak and it could tell me etc?

if i actually am going to spend the hefty 100 bucks i want to make sure it's worth it, and knowing how many calories i burn in certain activities would make the whole weight loss and calorie math thing a lot easier!

ps. and how does the calorie tracker thing even work? can it measure your body size, weight, heart rate and what activity you're doing? pretty advanced.
Weight Loss Cutting out sugar = weight gain? Jul 14 2007
23:11 (UTC)
1
trust me, there's no way cutting sugar can make you gain weight.

it's just possible your body was in shock and is doing weird things, if you've been eating that much sugar daily for that long. but it will calm down. minimal or no sugar at all is the way to go. it is high in calories, hugely processed, and does absolutely no good to your body at all. cut the sugar and watch the pounds fall off!

ps. cold turkey might be hard, ie. you might crave sugar a lot after a few days and then binge. try to slowly "wean" yourself off if that helps.
Weight Loss calorie burning question! Jul 14 2007

thanks guys... but nobody seems to specifically be answering my question.

i understand how cals work, and i also understand that 350 is really high. i am not using that number. i'm just wondering why working in a bakery full time seemed to have me lose a lot more weight than painting full time.

like i said, i beleive it's because the bakery work involved more cardio where the painting involved more muscle strength, which is why i burned more in the bakery.

so... does that sound reasonable?

lol, it's frustrating... i was hoping painting would help me to burn some cals at work, but instead i just come home really tired and have to work out in addition to that. lol

it's weird though.. i've taken into account the extra burnage and i am eating more but like i said i'm not getting the same results as last summer.

is it because i am burning less than i thought at work? (less cardio?) more than i thought? lol, i don't know if i should increase or decrease calories
Foods Oh the Sodium! May 26 2007
17:39 (UTC)

guys, stop freaking out about sodium and eat less packaged foods!!

all the foods mentioned on this post are brand names. anything with a brand name is packaged or canned, therefore probably has a decent amount of salt added (especially canned.) if you eat more natural vegetables, meats, etc. with no brand names attached,   i can guarantee your sodium will go down.

i know having time to cook can be hard, but it is very possible to whip up a yummy stirfry in about 10 minutes. give it a shot! :)

do heart rate monitors tell you how many cals you burn? or just your heart rate

thanks everyone, you all sounded very right. :) last summer when i seriously "dieted" for the first time... i was succesful, but i also weighed every day, and it did drive me a bit nuts at times. i think i will stick to twice a week, it's just so much less nerve-racking, lol.

good night

Since it's still evil rain/snow here in Toronto, I haven't quite gotten to the running and biking yet...

however my two pairs of running shoes are both several years old and have a bit of wear, is it bad for my feet if I keep using them or should I get a new pair?

jenna: haha, yeah, they're gone now, had em for two years though, and kudos to you! lol there's no way i could've brushed mine out, and the lady had to wash my hair like 3 times in a row afterwards it was pretty yucky..:) but rock on sista you should post a picture!

mrssandy: you'd send her to bootcamp for the dreads? or the short hair? 'cause technically i came home with short hair, and i think my mother was a tad more pleased with this. ;)

manewell: thanks very much for the welcome and compliments :)

about the nutrients, i know there are a lot within each group, but i just meant the 6 general categories. water, carbs, proteins (amino acids), fats (fatty acids), vitamins, and minerals.

Fitness high intensity vs. low intensity Sep 26 2006
22:25 (UTC)

thanks all for the advice. i will definitely try out some high intensity interval training. i just have a question though... everyone keeps saying "the total calories burned is all that matters."

well i have a question, (yes, another!) my job at the bakery has really long shifts, like 7,8,or 9 hours. it's pretty tough work, carrying boxes, lifting, baking, going into freezer, cleaning, etc. now i guess i would classify this low intensity, but i dont know if my body gets used to it because i don't think it's the kind of low intensity a body would get used to . (ie. jogging at a low pace you'd get used to, but this is very mixed what i'm actually doing.)

so im just wondering, rather longwindedly, wouldn't that burn quite a lot of calories too because of the length of time im doing it? it seems like 9 hours of bakery work would actually burn a lot more than a 30 or 40 min jog. but cause its low intensity and not a "normal exercise" is it bad?. of course i've been jogging and working out and doing other cardio in between, but im not sure if it's worth it to go out for a run after a 9 hour work day - calorie burning wise.

or is it? what's better? lol,  i just want to lose weight the best way possible! sorry for all the questions!

thanks, guys. two quesions though. 1) huggit i read that post and it was very helpful, but just to make sure, do i WANT my body have fat as a primary source of fuel? (ie. low intensity) that means it burns more fat right? dunno

and 2) what is interval training?

lol i haven't tried any of these crazy deep fried ice creams etc. but i can tell you all how they do it! i used to work at a pizza place and we had a deep fryer.. and man those things are powerful.

when we were bored we'd take bits of  broken crust and cut them into shapes and deep fry em, haha. but the oil is so hot that anything you drop in there fries in like 2 seconds, so thats why they can do ice cream because it forms a coating around the ice cream instantly i'm guessing. yuck...  the things we humans invent..

i have a really old school excerise bike at home, and im also not sure how to convert it. i usually do about 30 mins and burn a little over 200 cals. the speed is around 5.2 RPM which I think is rotations per minute of the pedal? im not sure.. it measures that, cals, time, etc. but not MPH or anything like that. anyone know how to convert? i'd also like to burn more in 30 mins...
Weight Loss ..two straight days of bingeing.. consequences? Sep 25 2006

lol, too bad about the yelling parents and "intestinal problems'. well, don't worry, we've all binged. (myself included!) just go back to the diet and start fresh and forget about it. you'll probably have gained a couple of pounds of water weight, and maybe 1 pound of fat (depending on how much you burned those days) but you'll be back on track within a few days.

just make sure not to starve yourself -  eat healthy, work out, and you'll do fine!

cheers
Motivation When does motivation dip? Sep 25 2006
04:08 (UTC)
twin, you said you were getting tired of the foods you're eating. i find that countering that, (ie. making fun and interesting new recipes) is a really good way to get motivated!

i work in a bakery, and just recently i've gotten very into baking and cooking. my mum has loads of cookbooks, many of which include healthy recipes, and this site does too - so take a look - it's a really great way to get motivated and be excited about eating healthy.

personally, i also find motivation dips when i get sick of eating the same foods, like you said. also i weigh every day, so if I'm having a slow week or the numbers won't move i easily get discouraged. but i just went up to the cottage for 3 days and excersized and ate well without a scale and i was fine! hopefully tomorrow brings good news :)
Weight Loss Starting Fresh and Need Some Help Sep 21 2006
17:49 (UTC)

it depends what you have your activity level set at. if you have it set at "low", then CC assumes you are doing a bit of exercise throughout the day, every day. what i do is set it at "sedentary", and then just log in any exercise i do. that gives you a more accurate number of how much you burn, and then i just subtract around 500-800 deficit for how much i eat in that day.

hope that helps!

Hi Jenn, I find I have the same problem with eating too many carbs. I don't know of any protein powders, but I can tell you some good low cal foods that are v. high in protein.

turkey breast is great
any poultry or fish
a bagel is 350-400 cals, but eat one of those babies for breakfast and you have 15g of protein
0% fat yogurt
cheese (i know its evil)
lite cottage cheese
canned tuna fish
bananas
lo fat peanut butter

hope that helps! good luck

tinytot, thanks for the support, but I'm actually getting a little worried. It's been 3 days since that big binge, and I'm still 135 pounds. I don't understand - how could one bad day have caused me to have gain 4 pounds? Or is the water weight just taking a really long time to leave? I feel like all my work for the last couple weeks has been wasted because of this one day...
