I know the feeling--I recently threw away about 4 cans of my favorite progresso soup because it was expired...sad day in the pantry!! =) |

I am really weird when it comes to expiration dates and I would NOT eat it. I am no engineer, but I would say they put expiration dates on those things for a reason.... =) When in doubt--throw it out! |

I feel ya! I increased from 1200-15/1600 and have gained about 5lbs in the past 3 months. : ( Sorry I don't have much to offer in the way of advice, but I totally know how you feel. I see you're a cyclist...have you been riding a lot? I feel like my pants don't fit anymore (even though they just fit differently) because I've gained but someone put the idea in my head that perhaps I was gaining muscle in my legs. Makes sense but still not what I'm goin' for. : ) goood luck! PS I like the bike |

well, it looks like you're making progress figuring out the HRM : ) Just keep in mind that because you take Beta blockers its highly likely that your HR will not get up to the age-predicted HR max (probably will max out at about 120?). That is why the calories burned on your F4 seem so low. Aah it feels so good to make your own "scientific" discoveries!! "Suggestions for further research include changing changing the age on the HRM This would create a HR range that lies within the capabilities of the individual. This potentially could create a more accurate caloric expenditure estimation for individuals using heart rate altering medications such as beta blockers." : ) I was going to post this on Sunday but I got wrapped up in studying for physiology. Funny to know we were thinking along the same lines! I will put the LOSER stamp on my head now.... |

Bobev- Depending on your medicine, it is possible that your heart rate is being regulated to help control your BP. if this is the case your HR won't get as high as it normally would without hte medicine. I would ask your doctor about that one though : ) BUT! If you have the information, you can use the MET values achieved during your workout to calculate the cals burned (i'm not sure if your machine tracks the METs). If you can get the Metabolic Equivalent values (MET) you can use this equation to figure out how many calories you are really burning, even though your HRM doesn't pick up on it because of your [possible] HR ceiling: Calories burned for oneminute = (METs*3.5*[weight in Kg]*5)/1000 One MET is the same as the amount of calories you burn at rest just living/breathing (in case you didn't know :) This is often how they calculate everything from cals burned washing a car to cals burnt in pro triathletes. If you're not sure about the METs (i know Lifecycle bicycles display METs) you can find estimates online. Good luck! |

Wow guys thanks for the responses! I'll look into the American Physiological Society website--thanks santonacci! It is so nice to hear that other people have/are struggling with the same thing and got through it! I am such an OCD plan oriented freak that I'm having a really hard time adjusting--I've always had a plan... for everything!! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm starting to feel like my BS is a bunch of BS haha. I focused in Exercise Science and chemistry, both of which I LOVE but now I'm lost! I feel kind of like Dori on Finding Nemo--just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.... |

| Fitness | Work out advice - the right heart rate for weight loss?? | Apr 29 2008 13:58 (UTC) |

Anything from 60-80% of your age-predicted HR max is usually good (220-age). As a 21 year old, my target heart rate is usually 139-160. Depending on how hard you are working it might be higher or less if you're tired. Really, the important thing is you're keeping moving. The higher your HR is, the more calories you are burning per minute (just ask your legs :) but it is better to work out for an extended period of time at a lower heart rate (say 60%) than do a few minutes of all out exercise (80-90% of your max). When I run outside my HR is usually in the 170s--everyone is different. The machines at the gym are often pretty sketchy. I wouldn't worry too much about HR, unless you have a heart condition--just have fun with being active!! : ) |

Jane- yeah for about 2 years I ate between 800-1200 calories a day and my body got used to it. Now that I have gained the weight I lost back and I'm actually trying to be healthy I can't seem to figure out my body anymore. I guess you're right about some cyclists having HUGE legs, maybe it is just something I need to embrace? haha try telling my jeans that : ) Lizschuler- It does take forever to gain muscle...so do you think I'm gaining fat mass then? How do you mean I should maintain a certain caloric deficit? here are my stats: BMI: 23.2 (after having gained almost 5lbs in the past two months...) % BF: 22.4 Intake: 1400-2,000 depending on the workout (eat back about half the calories from the workout) Workouts: add up to about 6-8 hours a week with two-a-days twice a week (swim in morning, run/bike at night). should I be eating less to create more of a deficit? |

Hi there! I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between Shimano 105s and Ultegras. I'm looking at getting a new triathlon bike and I'm not sure what the difference is. All three of the bikes I'm looking at have Dura Ace bar end control shifters. Also, anyone have any comments on bontrager wheels/tires/cranks? I have been cycling for a year on a bike I bought on Ebay. I'm looking at purchasing a new one after I graduate from College [in three weeks!!!] but I won't have time to go to a bike shop (all ~30mins away) to get some help until I get home. Sorry if this has been posted already, I looked back a few posts and didn't see it but I didn't have the time/motivation to look back 1124 more posts : ) Yay sunshine and taking the bikes off the trainers! : ) |

I have been having the same problem, but I'm almost 6 weeks late : ( (Not pregnant either...). I was reading up on it in one of my text books and it said that women who are highly active (which we both are...) and eat a high carbohydrate, low-ish protein (for their body mass) diet often have this problem. I know 6 weeks ago when I started begin vegan was the first time I missed....So I was considering this as an option. Have you changed your diet at all? I stopped being vegan after lent and I'm hoping I will get it back. Also, stress is like the No. 1 thing that triggers skipping for one of my friends. Since college started I don't think she has had a period within 3 weeks of finals!! Best wishes with the wedding! Don't stress too much, you are beautiful and I'm sure everything will turn out great!! : ) |

haha evemarie i did gain most of the 25lbs I lost back when I started eating 1200....thats why I posted this : ) I want to lose/maintain at a caloric intake that is actually sustainable. I ate that little by constantly zig zagging my way down and my metabolism got used to not needing much I guess. I just want to be able to eat like a normal person [and without feeling guilty about sitting down to a 500calorie meal] As always, thanks for the stories you guys are wonderful <3

Make a cheese sandwich--I used to make one with 2 slices of light whole wheat bread and a fat free American single (<100 Calories!) but I'm sure you can spice it up a bit : ) I also found some "Clif Zbars" that are made for kids. Not too crumbly and only 120/130 calories in one (chocolate tastes like a no bake cookie!!). Also, if you take an extra sandwich bag with you you can put a banana peel inside it when you're done and you won't get the banana goo all over your desk/hands/notes. |

wow, I'm having the EXACT same problem. My avg heart rate was 134 for a 60 minute spin class doing hill work. 134! It is usually around 150 but recently its been super low! According to my HRM thats like 250calories/hour for SPINNING what?! On Wednesday I went for a 1.5mile run after spinning and got my heart rate into the 170s. anyways I'm lost too!!! I'm trying to maintain, maybe lose a few for Spring Break. I have been researching endlessly this week to try and figure out why.. I'll let you know if I find anything : ) PS. I'm 21, eating 1200-1300/day, workout 4-5times per week depending on how my body feels |

I'm doing the same! Any vegans experience "negative" side effects at first? I KNOW I'm not getting enough protein. My stomach/head have been hurting like crazy for the last two days. I didn't even get out of bed yesterday (okay..maybe I was just being lazy) let alone work out (training for a triathlon). Any suggestions for college students with limited time to cook vegan meals? I'm currently drinking soy milk, but besides that I don't really know what to do? |

haha I love this. Last Saturday I volunteered to be the DD (We usually walk everywhere but it was raining : ( ). Best choice I ever made--Not only did I not pig out with my roommates when we got home (they were *very intoxicated*) I felt so good in the morning I went to spinning at 9. AND this week they all owe me drinks as part of the DD deal, so not only did I save calories last week, I'm saving money too! WOO! Any ways, I usually stick to Diet/Vanilla Vodka. I eat a pretty big lunch, workout in the afternoon and take a nap around dinner. By the time I wake up its time to get ready to go out. A few slices of light bread and a HUGE glass of water fill me up so I don't get *Sloshed* but have a good time and no hangover in the morning b/c of the water! I LOVE BEING 21...although its killer on the college budget and waistline : )
