This week is the first time since the New Year I've been struggling after dinner the way you described. Last night there were leftovers and I ended up eating them.  Tonight there are no leftovers (thankfully) but I just ate some Nerds, Runts and  Sweetarts snack mix my daughter left by the computer. I'm definitely glad there's not much food in my house.  I'm going to keep it that way.  And now, after reading what you wrote, I realize sometimes you just have to say "Enough!" I'm not going back in that kitchen. I'm done.

Wow, at 19 your life is just beginning and you have everything to look forward to. I know that's hard to believe but it's true.  I felt just like you when I was in my Freshmen year of college.  I was clinically depressed and just couldn't make myself function.  I stayed in bed all the time, didn't eat, didn't shower, my plan was to just lay there and die.  Talk about stuck!  I can't say that the antidepressents helped, but what did help was a wonderful Christian counselor (psychiatrist was not helping at all) who taught me how to just make small goals each day and slowly build up from there.  Don't mentally overwhelm your self.  He also taught me that I was a victim of self pity and I learned how important it is to count my blessings.  He showed me how my behavior was affecting those around me (my poor parents!) and opened my eyes to those around me.  Literally, all I could see was me.  Once he made me look outside myself I gained a new perspective that helped me tremendously.

Pinthin gave you great advice.  Right now just focus on healthy eating and getting fit.  You will be amazed at the energy and confidence you will gain. Those things will be reflected to others and before you know it  you'll be meeting new people and trying new things.  I guess you could say I was stuck too (read my profile) but now things are starting to turn around for me.  I've gotten involved in the children's ministry at church instead of just pew warming, and through that I've made some new friends. Also, I've renewed my relationship with my mom and sister who are both hundreds of miles away, but we email each other daily and I feel like I have 2 new friends!

I would love to be your friend, so add me! I know I'm a lot older but maybe you're only considering your peers as friends?  Friends can come in all ages and I'm sure you can make alot of them here!

Hi JT - I'm so happy you came here! You are not alone.  You may have more to lose than some of us but we are all making the same changes - that is eating healthy and MOVING! Little steps add up to an amazing journey. We will all get to say "I knew JT when he first started out. I knew he could do it. It's an honor to know him.  I'm so proud of that JT." Really, you can do it.  My Mom who is one of my biggest supporters and a fellow loser loves Billy Blanks' favorite mantra, "Where you are today is where your mind put you. Where you are tomorrow is where your mind put you."

Barb, all I can say is WOW and thanks for posting! What an inspiration.

Rockinmama I love your laugh.  You have so much energy comin through on your messages. You have the gift of encouragement. Awesome!

I used to drive my daughter to her Sunday afternoon softball practice, drop her off, drive home, sit around for an hour (not enough time to really do anything) then drive back and pick her up. Nothing accomplished - gas wasted! NOW: I drive her to softball practice, park the car, get out of the car and go for a 4 to 5 mile walk until her practice is over. Then we drive home, both of us have exercised!
Weight Loss Im not hungry anymore!!! Hurray!!! Mar 17 2007

Good job on the nutritious eating.  I've experienced the same thing since I began my journy to eat healthy in January. Before I was never satisfied and every night I would eat and eat until I was afraid I would explode, but still somehow I was hungry?! Our bodies were desperate for food it could actually process I guess.  Thinking back the stuff I was eating was pretty unhealthy and also I didn't eat much during the early part of the day. I used think I was an emotional eater but I don't think that anymore cause now that doesn't seem to factor in. I think I just needed to improve the quality of my eating, spread it out over the day (I think that has something to do with it too) and limit processed foods.

Hi Jon,

I would love to be friends.  I've added you to my friends list. You sure keep busy.  That's good.  You have some distraction from food. I completely understand the yoyo dieting syndrome and getting support from others is what's helping me to break out of that mentality. I'm working on lifestyle change and not a temporary diet to lose weight.  The way I'm eating now is the way I intend to continue eating the rest of my life.  Now that my food is nutritious I don't overeat and I'm satisfied with the amounts I should be. So make sure what you're eating for the most part is wholesome and not processed.  Also eat throughout the day (starting with a nice breakfast).  I will try to keep in touch to see how you're doing.  Nice to meet you!

Fiber One Oats & Chocolate Bars and Fiber One Oats & Peanut Butter Bars taste awesome and each has 9 grams of fiber and 150 calories.  Very filling with a glass of water.  Really good for afternoon at the office to tide me over until dinner.

Sarah, thanks for the congrats. Your weightloss photos are inspirational. 40 pounds - Fantastic!

Monica, we do have a lot in common. My 23rd wedding anniversary is Sept 1st and my goal is 127 pounds which is my marriage weight and I too was hoping to reach it by the fall. Also, I'm the lead Admin. Ass't at a small engineering firm of about 25 people and it's pretty demanding. I've been doing Billy Blanks Tae Bo or Bootcamp about 3 times a week and I take long walks once or twice a week and shorter walks twice a day when I walk my dogs.  I walk one dog in the morning and the other dog in the evening.  On Saturday I get a pretty good workout getting caught up on my chores.  I've been working around the house all day and I'm exhausted, but it's nice to get it done and know that all the while I'm getting in a lot of physical activity. As for what I eat, I count calories (1200 - 1500 daily) and I try to keep sodium to 2300mg a day, fiber at least 25g, added sugar under 40g, and saturated fat under 12g and try to eat 5 to 7 veggies/fruit a day. Watching my salt and sugar intake forces me to eat healthier and avoid processed foods. That's pretty much my plan.  I've added you to my friends list.  I've found out that it's just so much easier to do this with help from friends and family. I'm glad you're taking control and good job on the cholesterol. and 13 pounds! Fight the food fight!

A big mug of hot herbal tea works great for me too.  Mint flavor seems to help me best with curbing my desire to binge.  A few raw no salt almonds and a glass of water always works for me too.  They don't taste the best but they really help me with the desire to binge.  They are very good for you and even if I've already had my calories for the day, I figure it's better to have a few almonds than to lose it and pig out.

I've never managed to stay on plan long enough to plateau.  This time though I'm determined, so I'm trying to prepare myself for this eventuality.  I've read alot about adding calories to jumpstart weight loss, but I also think your idea of maybe adding calories to maintain for a few weeks and then reducing to lose weight again is really someting to chew on.  That way, when I go to weigh weekly I won't be looking for a loss and have the disappointment that goes with it.  I'll only be checking to make sure I haven't gained. Of course if I do this, I will still maintain healthy eating habits.  I wonder how long we should try to maintain before moving on to lose weight again?

Good job Jaimie. 5 pounds is fine for the first week.  Your weight loss should slow now though.  If you're still losing more than two pounds a week after the first few weeks you might want to make sure you're eating enough.  I always lose about 5 pounds my "first" week of dieting on a 1200-1500 calorie diet.  It's a shame I've had so many "first" times. I can't wait to see how much I lose in my 30th week - if it's just 1/4 of a pound I'll be thrilled because at least I will have hung in there.  I'll be watching for more great reports from you in the future.
Weight Loss birthday blues Jan 18 2007

Happy birthday!  If I were in your situation I would go to the restaurant and party with a plan that allows for some of the stuff you wouldn't normally have.  That way you won't feel deprived or like your being a party pooper but you will still feel in control and not go overboard.  Have a piece of cake but just one, have a drink, maybe two, but drink slowly and have water  too.  If you like steak have some but give half of it to the meateater your with (assuming guys will be there).  My husband and son are usually thrilled to eat my leftovers at the steakhouse because "I simply can't finish this, I'm stuffed, do you want it?"  Hee, hee.  I feel a little guilty being a red meat pusher. Have your salad with dressing on the side so you have control over how much dressing goes on.  There are usually lighter side dishes you can order so choose from those.  Try to have a plan so once you're there you don't have to stress about it and will be able to celebrate your life and the friends and family your with and not be focused on the food.  Remember to live in the moment.  Enjoy this enormously special occasion held in your honor! If you're laughing and talking and hugging and having the time of your life, no one will even notice if you're not "indulging".  You can do it!

How much weight have you loss? 8 pounds since Jan 1, 2007

What's the best weight loss advice you've gotten? Don't skip breakfast and eat smaller, nutritious meals/snacks throughout the day.  Exercise- it must be done. Like brushing your teeth or eating right, it's part of what you must do to maintain a healthy you.

What is your montra/motto? No excuses! No whining! You got yourself into this mess and you can get yourself out.

What do you tell yourself to stay modivated? I just think about how good I'm feeling about myself right now and do I really want to mess that up?

What is it all for? Are you doing it for your health? A cute bikini? Your kids? Health, energy, to look good and feel good, to fit into all the cute clothes I have in my closet that I bought the last time I lost weight *sigh*.

I have turned to hot herbal teas for that "comfort food" feeling during the winter. (BTW, freezing here in Kansas City). There are so many varieties.  I like peppermint, or ginger with a little lemon, and I love lemon or raspberry zinger. If I decide to sweeten I use a little honey.

With regards to Factoid #1 - I guess I've fallen under the misconception that we grow more fat cell when we gain weight and then once they're there you can not lose them.  Factoid #1 is somehow comforting - makes me feel like one less obstacle to losing weight.

When I'm craving chocolate I eat a chocolate tootsie pop, or Cocoa Krispies with skim milk, or 1 tablespoon of semi sweet morsels letting them melt one at a time on my tongue.  I too love diet hot chocolate but I make it with 6 oz skim milk instead of water so it's tastes richer.
