pamt: according to my sister, sports bras are "out" right now. Dick's Sporting Goods has the funky colored ones on sale 50-60% off.  So we're getting good $40 bras for less than 20! She doesn't understand why they do this (put them on sale in the "off" season) but it works for us!!
Weight Loss Me again . . . 'CURVES' . . . tried it? Nov 05 2006

Hi Helen,

I, personally, didn't like it.  I like step aerobics - in a classroom, with everyone doing the same thing, paying attention to the teacher. I like the gym when it's quiet and empty.

I didn't like the set-up of the curves by me - all equipment in a circle - so you have nowhere to look but at the person across the room from you. And I don't like people looking at me, so I felt weird looking at someone else.

On top of that, you had to make your own resistance on the machine, instead of adding/removing weight like an actual machine. I found I wasn't working anywhere near as hard as I should have been.

Hope that helps!

Sooooo many good ones on here... I'll try not to repeat!!

Work Peeves:
-when I send an email to someone, and they CALL me instead of replying.  If I wanted to talk to you, I would have called!!
-people who walk slow, in the middle of the aisle, when they can see/hear me moving more quickly
-when people come over & DROP papers wherever on my desk. I'm anal about the desk being organized.
Home Peeves:
-dirty dishes left ALL OVER the house
-drops of water on the floor after hubby & son get out of the shower
-shower liner hanging OUTSIDE the tub after a shower (and the resulting puddle on the floor)
-that I am the only one capable of vacuuming and taking out the recycling
-two shirts together in the laundry; hubby takes them off together, so I wash them together, and put them away together. He complains, but wouldn't it be easier to seperate them like I asked if I'm the one washing them?!?!

Obsessions:
Work:
-have to read an email AS SOON as the envelope pops up in the bottom corner
-I have to use a certain color pen for certain things I do: this pen goes with this, this pen goes with that. I'm a mess if someone borrows one & doesn't give it back!
Home:
-the kitchen sink has to be empty when I leave for work. Dishes can sit overnight, but I HATE coming home to a messy kitchen.

That's it for now - I'm sure I'll come up with more!
Weight Loss Counting for Deficit & Exercise & Losing Oct 17 2006

Lets see...

Last Tuesday I took two step aerobics classes, 40 mins & 60 mins. That was approx 1100 cals burned. I ate approx 2500 calories, so that was a total of 1400 for the day.
Wednesday was no exercise, ate 1700 calories.
Thursday was a 60 minute step class, approx 850 cals burned. Ate approx 2200 cals; total of 1350 or so for the day.
Friday was a 40 minute class, approx 500 cals burned. Didn't keep track of calories (bad girl).

I know that my calories aren't from the best sources, but I'm seriously working on that - trying new things, trying to up my protien, and lower the carbs a bit. But if you look at it from a strictly calorie standpoint, I'm figuring the intake vs. expense corretly, right?

Yes, that helped. Thank you both!!
I listed my activity as sedentary, because I sit at a desk all day. I smoke, so I go for short walks during the day, but its not something I technically count as activity, because the pace is barely a mosey. My printer is at my desk, so I very rarely get up.  I'm a bit more active at home - walking around the kitchen making dinner, laundry, that type of stuff.
I've been doing a few aerobics classes a week (between 3 & 4) for three weeks now and haven't lost anything.  My deficit has NOT been too low, and I'm getting seriously discouraged!

Hi Willow -
Actually, I've found that every single scale I've used (doctor's, gym, home, mom's) all register differently.
I would pick one scale & go by that. If that shows a loss, the rest be d*mned! :)
Hope that helps!  You can do this!!!

Hi all!

I haven't seen anything by the 100+ to lose in a while, and I've missed it!!!  I fell off the wagon for a month (or two), but I'm back on & in full swing.  In fact, I just took off 6 lbs!!! Yes, it was probably water weight, but I am soooooo excited about it anyway!

Congrats on everyone doing so good!  I'm very jealous... :) in a good way... In a MOTIVATED way!!!

I love hummus - that's chick peas, but I eat it with baked pita chips, which aren't so good. :(
The tofu sounds like something to try.... Marinate it, huh?

I have a tough time with protein - chicken's not my favorite, don't eat any fish, love peanut butter (not the best source), so I thought maybe I could disguise them.
Don't like cottage cheese.. or salsa.. or mushrooms... or onions... or tomatoes.
Darn but I'm difficult!
Thanks, brokentink, love the visual - LOLOL!
That sounds really really good, jennys! The french toast was kind of my goal there.... :)
Can I add fruit to an omlette?

I'm acutally quite surprised to see this post still going! Surprised in a good way.
So I've been off of here for about a month - managed to gain 10 lbs in less than two months - I have surpassed my own highest ever weight. VERY upset today.
Today is a new day, though, and my step class tonight is going to kick some serious calorie butt!
WELCOME to alllllll the new people!! No time at the moment to add to friends, but I will!
I miss the motivation I get from everyone here - I'm going to try to work harder on keeping up with everything - food, journals, and posts!
Foods Is it bad to chew gum? Sep 29 2006

The often-maligned act of chewing gum could in fact make us smarter, according to British research. A joint study carried out by the University of Northumbria and the Cognitive Research Unit, Reading, has found that chewing gum has a positive effect on cognitive tasks such as thinking and memory.

"The results were extremely clear and specifically we found that chewing gum targeted memory", Andrew Scholey of the university's Human Cognitive Neuroscience Unit said. "People recalled more words and performed better in tests on working memory."

Peppermint gum, menthol or spearmint - it makes no difference. The key is the repetitive chewing motion. Scholey said the improved performance in a range of memory tests could be attributed to an increase in heart rate coupled with a surge in insulin to the brain. {{{study info, blah blah}}}

"What we think is that the mild increase in heart rate may improve the delivery of oxygen and glucose to the brain, enough to improve cognitive function", he told Reuters.

I honestly cannot believe they now have registries for children's parties now.... <<shakes head in gross wonder>> that's just gross.
Now, my opinion about the parenting/kids....
My husband grew up really rough and makes up for it by spoiling our son.  ANYthing this kid wants he gets.  Except for the things I say no to. :)  My mom is/was a yeller, so I yell, because it's what I know. He settles me down.
I think that focusing on the good influences you've had (from anywhere, parents, grandparents, on here, advise) and adapting it to your own personality, as well as trying to avoid the things that really bothered you as a kid, will help you to be a better parent.  I constantly ask people how they establish that "talking about everything" relationship with their kids, and I'm discovering it just happened.  I ask a lot of questions, and don't let him get away with the "whatever" answers. Turns out I've got one of those kids! Of course, he's only 10, so that could change... :)
But my husband and I balance each other out - his strengths compliment my weaker points, and vice versa.  Anyone who raises kids "single" and has ok kids are amazing to me, cause I think my son would be a mess without someone to balance me out. :)~

Thank you Salome, I've been wondering the same thing.  When I started here, I was so into it & so excited, and haven't lost a darn thing.  I'm watiching, my food is ok, exercising, and NOTHING.  I have yet to find something I can stick with.
I FEEL better when I eat better; I ENJOY walking; still nothing.  I have more off days than on days.
What is it going to take?!?!

Motivation My First Weekend Aug 19 2006

I'd LOVE to see results immediately, but that's not going to happen if you're adjusting your eating lifestyle, not just dieting.  The good thing about it is it will become second nature eventually, and you won't think about food the way you do now. (That's what everyone tells me; I'm not actually there yet!)
The only thing I can suggest for the weekend is to keep busy with things that have NOTHING to do with food - stay outside (yardwork), clean the house, go shopping. My problem is at work during the week; I can usually go the weekend without getting hungry (of course, I eat my heart out anyway).
Hope that helped!  Keep up the good work - way to go on 4 lbs!!!!

I don't think it's so much controlling their minds as trying to correctly influence it.  Saying you work out because you feel good is a POSITIVE influence; saying you don't want to get fat is a NEGATIVE influence.  It's not necessarily about control.

I totally feel hot - then I look in the mirror & come crashing back to reality - but I tend to ignore that, so yea, I'm totally cute!!!
I really hate the whole thin=beautiful mindset.  I saw someone on tv & thought they looked big, but it turned out they were a size 12.  12!!  What I wouldn't give to be that **small**!!  But it looked big on tv & that made me sad!
Shakti & Baby-creature: Do you eve carry on a conversation at yourself, and laugh at something you said? I do that constantly and {after making fun of myself for talking to myself & actually laughing out loud about it} realize that I'm a funny girl & that I LOVE talking to me! That was a big first step in self esteem. Go with what's on the inside FIRST - the outside follows!!!
Fitness Walking vs. Running Aug 13 2006
19:58 (UTC)
Hi everyone & thank you for the input!  So I posted this originally on the 8th, and ran for the first time this morning!  I was sooo nervous, but determined to at least try it.
So we walked for approx 4 minutes, then slow jogged for 5, walked [uphill] for 5, then faster jogged for 7 or 8, then walked the cool down.  I sounded like a steam engine by the end (and hubby wasn't the least bit winded), but he didn't comment or make fun or anything - he said it'll get easier & I'll get better!  Yaay for us for getting out there!!! And yaaay for me for moving!!!
My knees are actually ok, but my hips are kinda bothering me. It's 4 hours later, and my muscles still feel kinda shaky, but I did it!!
Again, thank you for the encouragement, and lets hope I stick with it!!!!

My doctor put me on it, because a side effect is a "lowered dependence on nicotine". It hasn't helped with the smoking one little bit. I have no depression issues (other than the occasional bad mood), and at first I noticed this strange *giggly* feeling - like out of control giggling, at inappropriate times.  That went away, though.  Haven't noticed any changes in appetite!!

Same issue!  I asked for a SMALL ice from Ralph's Italian Ices, and he came back with a large.  And who can eat just a scoop's worth when you have a whole container in front of you? A stronger person than I.
So he went again day before yesterday & asked what I wanted.  I said nothing, and he came home with nothing.  I guess my comment "Why are you trying to have me fail - again - instead of helping me" hit home & he's actually listening to me!
