Sorry to hear about your troubles. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I missed 5 days from my job. I got these things called "dry holes" - it's when you lose the scabs prematurely. You still heal, just hurts more. I am not a big fan of taking medication, but Tylenol helped me a little bit. There is no substitute for bed rest, no way around it. Maybe you can study for a few minutes, then crawl back to bed when it gets to be too much. Also, do not worry about your eating plan or the exercises until you feel better, because it just adds more stress to your life. Take good care!!! |

Hiya Lizzy, All good posts here. I would like to add my 2 cents. All of these numbers are just numbers. Kinda to get you in the ballpark when you are just starting out. There are so many variables, what works for some, might not work for others. I am a big believer in listening to how your body feels. For instance, if you feel weak before your next meal, it means you waited too long between meals. Keep a food journal, and try to substitute healthier, lower calorie foods for what you are presently consuming. As well as watch the portion control. For me, I spent some time figuring out how many cals I can consume a day and not gain weight. Then, I try to create a 500 cal deficit, through exercise and healthy eating. I want to cut 300 cals from my eating plan, and do 200 cals with exercise. I am a softy - I don't wanna starve myself, and I am not too keen on the exercise thing, LOL. The variables - some folks have faster metabolisms than other folks. Some folks might have an undiagnosed medical problem, such as thyroid or diabetes. Some folks might just be too busy to sqeeze in an exercise program - I feel for all the single moms out there!!! You have chosen the good thing - to learn how to eat properly, and investsigate an exercise program. And look at you !!! You have lost 4 pounds already!!! It's kinda like we all have our very own, custom made puzzle. And we are tryng to help each other figure it out. Short cuts, like fasting, do not work, or at least the results do not last. Good luck to you!!! |

Lighterrose - my friend, you are 14 years old? You do not need to be concerned about your weight yet. That's good news, right? Listen, your body is still forming. You need to learn to eat healthy (we all do), and learn to listen to your body. Aches and pains are our bodies way of getting us to slow down. I am glad that you filled out your profile, otherwise, I would be giving you very different suggestions. So - do not worry about your weight, you are only young once - enjoy your life. You can eat most anything in moderation. I am sure any sports you participate in will give you plenty of exercise. Post up any questions, we all hope that you are doing well. |

I know you said you wanna be as accurate as possible. However, a quick and dirty way, would be to adjust the portion size. In this case you could enter .70 - assumming the counter lets you use decimal points. I am only suggesting this as a solution for those times you might be in a hurry. I use a different tracker (on my Treo), and that's what I would do. Best Regards, NuBiker |

| A healthy person can get away with eating the same thing everyday, but it is not recommended.
Women of childbearing age have special nutritional needs - in my opinion. If you ever get a chance, take a Nutrition class at your school. You will learn so much!! I know how difficult it can be to eat a variety of nutritous, low calorie foods when you are going to school. Good Luck !!!! |

Just remember - typical results are that supplements do not work. You will be doing this community a favor. Good luck!!!! |

| If any of those supplements worked, don't you think obestity would be wiped out by now? Or, wouldn't you have run into at least one person in your life, an uncle, a relative who was at the perfect weight because of that supplement?
All those adds, in the fine print say "Results not typical." Why is that? In America, we spend more money on fitness than any other country, I think we are among the most obese, LOL. There is no subsitude for healthy eating and exercise. Best Regards, Nu |

| Hiya Patsy,
Welcome to the forum. Your method will work, just add up all the calories you consume, as long as that number is less than your body uses, you stand a good chance of losing weight. Throw in some exercise, and you will increase your chances of losing weight that much more. Plus hang around the forum for encouragement and to encourage others. Best Regards, Nu |

| Do a Yahoo search for dumbbell exercises. I work out at home - too shy to work out in public.
It doesn't have to be anything too fancy - I ust set the kitchen timer for 20 minutes and do my little routine. Then, after the bell goes off, I do some sit ups, and some girl push ups. |

| Are the triceps those muscles that are on the other side of biceps? If so - push ups are good. When I started exercising last July, I could not do a single push up. I had dislocated my shoulder ~4 years ago and I am still weak from it. What I did was start with wall push ups, standing 3 feet or so from a wall, and leaning into it, and doing 3 sets of 8 wall push ups. When I got to be able to do three sets of 12, I switched to doing push ups against the kitchen sink. Again, I started with three sets of 8, and worked up to 3 sets of 12. Then, I switched to three sets of 12 "girl push ups" , which I am still doing. By the way, I can do 5 regular push ups now - so I am seeing some progress. | |||

| Cutting out the fast food really helped for me. I used to eat at those places twice a day. How about you, KY?
What helped me is I went to the websites of my favorite places and downloaded their nutrition guides. When you see the calorie content of some of their offerings you will be surprised. I might visit Carl's Jr every two or three weeks now, and get a burger plain, with just mustard on it, but that's only because I cannot resist the aroma when I drive by that place, LOL. |

| Hi Jen, I am sorry for your pain. Don't give that guy the time of day, OK? My life saying is; "A well lived life is the best revenge." Don't allow yourself to get bitter, heal up your heart - I believe those of us who have gotten a broken heart are in a better position to NEVER treat someone else that way. After being divorced for 20+ years, I met my wife on Match.com - she said she had a lot of bad experiences with the internet dating thing, but I met a whole bunch of truly wonderful ladies on it. I wasn't even looking for a mate - I had given up and would have been happy just to meet women for lunch and a matinee movie. Best wishes to you. |

| Duffy, I am stuck at 170-173 for a few months now. With the cold weather, I have not been able to walk my favorite circuit - a 2 mile loop, half of it up hill. I have continued my upper body exercises, done a few binges - donuts and pizza - not at the same time, LOL, and have stayed the same weight. I am satisfied with myself that I am eating healthier and exercising and enjoying my life. I think I will switch from walking to riding a bike - as soon as I get one. I gave my bike away a year after I started riding motorcyles. I went from bike riding 4 times a week to not at all and gained 12 pounds my first year of motorcycle riding. Here's hoping you figure out a way to break your plateau!!!! |

| Weight Loss | Confusion with calories for activites | Jan 18 2007 14:46 (UTC) |
|
| From reading the experiences of others on this site, I have come to the conclusion that the our bodies do not want to give up much more than 1-2 pounds per week. I don't know why (outside of losing water weight).
I think you should redo your calorie program and aim for that- a 500 calorie deficit per day through diet and some exercise. Pay attention to how you feel, do you feel like you are starving yourself? In the beginning, it's good to keep a written record of everything you eat. Later on, as you figure out what foods are healthy and lower in calories than you are currently eating, you won't have to keep doing this so much. You look at your foods eaten and try to substitute lower calorie, healthier foods for what you are eating now. It's like a puzzle, you have to find one piece at a time. In theory, eating less cals than you consume should lead to weight loss. But in practice, it's different - slower, LOL. I have been stuck at 170-173 pounds for almost 3 months now. Judging by the spare tire I carry around, I need to lose about 10-15 more pounds. But it's ok by me. I am eating healthier and getting some exercise - I like this lifestyle even if I am not losing weight. I see progress in other areas of my life. For instance, when I first started exercising, in July 2006, I could not do a single push-up. I dislocated my shoulder 4 years ago, and it's terribly weak. I started doing wall push ups. When I got up to 3 sets of 12, I started doing pushups against the kitchen counter. When I got up to 3 sets of 12, I started doing girl push ups. I am up to 3 sets of 8 right now. Yesterday, I tried to do regular push ups and I did 5 of them. That made me feel good, even if I have not lost any weight. I look for progress whereever I can find it, otherwise, I will get discourged and give up. |

| Hiya Cris!!!! Welcome to the forum. That is a good question.
I would go with the higher amount, and see how I feel before trying to squeeze a few more cals from my eating plan. Don't forget QUALITY is as important as quantity. I believe women of child bearing age have special nutritional requirements - find out what those requirements are. If you ever get a chance, take a nutrition class at your school, you will learn so much!!! Others will chime in, I just wanna welcome you and encourage you to ask any and all questions that might come up as you start your healthy eating and exercise plan. Good luck!!! |

| Hi robo - if I were you I would lay off the rope jumping completely until the pain totally went away. You are wearing tennis shoes, not jumping bare foot, right? Maybe you could try it with tennis shoes and standing on the lawn outside. Grass or dirt is softer than concrete. Take care - you don't wanna mess up your back. | |||

| When I first start an exercise, say bicep curls with a dumbbell - I will pick a weight that allows me to do 3 sets of 8 reps. When I work up to 3 sets of 12 reps, I know it's time to go to a higher weight, and back to doing 3 sets of 8 reps. Go to Yahoo and do a search for exercises using dumbbells, you will find lots of free information out there.
I dislocated my shoulder ~4 years ago, the dumbbells are really helping me. Good luck to you!!! |

| Hi Skinny, I read your profile. Is there any chance you can get involved with an exercise class to work on flexibility and upper body strength? I am thinking like a Yoga class would be good for you. I think Yoga (or Pilates) might help with your physical problem, maybe working out might allow you to go back to taking piano lessons.
I have a question about the number of crunches you do. I am totally unfamiliar with abdominal exercses. HOWEVER - with every other exercise I read about on the internet, they instruct me to do 3 sets of 12. So - my deductive reasoning tells me that 3 sets of 12 for crunches and sit ups would suffice. Hopefully others will post their opinions for you. Good luck!!! |

| My wife is 53, had her ovaries (and I don't know what else) removed several years ago and gained a lot of weight. She carries all her overweight on her belly and almost looks pregnant. My advice to her is eat right, count your calories, and get some exercise. But other than that, there are no shortcuts to losing weight. Some folks have an easier time than others losing weight.
The only way I know of to increase your metabolism - in theory - if you can add muscle mass, the extra muscle uses more calories than less muscle mass - so start a walking (aerobic) program, and maybe start investigating using dumbells (strength training). Good luck to you, it's not hopeless it's just difficult to lose weight during menopause. You have chosen the right path!!! |

| Welcome to the forum EK. I do not have the answer to your question, but I wanted to share my activity logging philosophy.
I do not count any activity that I have been doing prior to starting my exercise program because that activity has not contributed to keeping me thin. I log any activity that is in addition to what I usually do because those activities are burning "extra" calories that I would not normally use up. It's ok to log your activities like you have been doing, but I found that I don't have the time to track all my usually activities. Oh---good for you for walking!!! Just do not do too much too soon, you might hurt yourself. Be extra careful with your ankles and knees, I speak from personal experience, LOL. I first started in July 2006, I would walk ten minutes away from home and turn around and come right back, no matter how good I felt. I worked up from there. Also, try to figure out a back up activity should you not be able to walk. For me, I will ride my bike if I cannot walk - I think it might be easier on my bones, but still it's a good cardio exercise. Good luck to you!!! |

| hi Elindow, welcome to the forum!!!
Here is the nutrition guide at the Wendy's web site. What I do is go to the sites of my favorite restaurants and download the PDF format nutrition guides. I make my choices at home and next time I visit the drive thru I know what I can have. If a food place does not have a nutrition guide, ask if they plan on offering one. If enough people ask, maybe they will provide one. I know I won't visit any place that does not offer one, my dad has diabetes and the guide helps me make food choices for him. Enough places have guides now, that I don't feel am missing out by not patronizing a place that doesn't have one. BTW - the most nutritious food you will ever find will be what is prepared at home, LOL. Because you control the ingredients. Take it from me - I hate anthing to do with the kitchen in my house - but I make breakfast, lunch, and some dinners now for me and my dad (wifey works, I am retired). If you ever have the opportunity, take a nutrition class at your school. You will learn so much!! One more thing - it's ok to make changes gradually. Keep a written record of everything you consume, every day. Then start substituting healtier items for what you are doing now. Go through the Wendy's Nutrition Guide and see what all you could have for the calories you consumed eating the waffles. I look at this dieting thing as a puzzle - little pieces of knowledge I gain everyday helps me get closer to my goal. http://www.wendys.com/food/NutritionLanding.j sp PS - welcome to the forum to all the newbies!!!!! |
