I'm sure that this diet would work to lose weight in the short term, as it means you're eating fewer calories (presumably). However, over the long run, we need variety in our diets. It might be a good way to structure yourself for two weeks, especially at the start of a diet, but I think over time you'd start to experience some deficiencies. |

I think that for a lot of people, when they start to "diet", they start becoming obsessed with food (I'm not saying this is you! Just something I've noticed about some people). For me, even when I'm not trying to lose weight, food is just what I use to get energy. Its not a temptation, or anything like that. Also, I have really weird food preferences. Being a vegan cuts out a LOT of junk foods that seem to catch others, and I don't have a sweet tooth at all (I might have a glass of fruit juice once a month, but that just about does it for me). In general, I'll have two meals a day, and a snack if I'm hungry. When I'm not trying to lose weight, I eat about 2000 calories a day. When I am trying, I probably eat around 1200-1300. I'm also really active- I sold my car about six months ago and I ride my bike everywhere I go. I run a few days a week, play sports, go to the gym. By the way, I know it SOUNDS like I shouldn't have any weight to lose, but what does me in is beer ;) (I'm a senior in college). What sort of exercise do you usually do? I love trying new things :) |

Vegetarian, I do that too. I generally set goals of about 5% of my body weight, and don't worry about what happens after that. Once I get there, I decide if I want to keep losing (I haven't yet reached a point where I've decided I'm at my optimal weight), and then I set a new goal of about 5% of my new weight. Five percent isn't TOO much (right now its about 9 pounds), so I can generally succeed in about a month. I think I have a different relationship with food than most.. if I decide I want to lose weight, I just do it. I don't struggle with cravings, or loss of motivation. I guess that's how I am in general, though. I think that anything worth doing is worth doing 100%. I'm a pretty black-and-white sort of personality, and my willpower can overcome anything for a while. I suppose my motivation eventually dips, especially once I start getting closer to my goals. I'm the most motivated when I see the biggest challenge ahead. |

Hi, sorry, I forgot to check this post! I love food too, and I totally agree with you slimtwinmom that REAL food is the best! I don't relate to the people on this site that talk about eating diet foods, and chemically processed alternatives to what nature gave us :) To each his own, but I just don't enjoy eating something that doesn't seem real to me. Elizablitz, I'm actually just a very weird eater.. I usually only eat one or two meals a day, and drink huge amounts of tea (I love tea!). I think I'm going to focus on eating more slowly, and planning ahead.. sometimes, my overeating is a result of ending up on campus with no food. There are almost no vegan options nearby, so I usually end up getting a bagel sandwich.. tasty, but probably six hundred calories! That's close to half my day's worth, and although I'm not hungry after I'm done, I'm not full either, and when I get home I might munch on something else. If I plan ahead, and bring something light with me, I could avoid buying that sandwich all together (and save some money, too). I think I really need to recommit to exercise as well.. I sold my car and ride my bike EVERYWHERE, which is good, but not enough. I play lacrosse a few days a week, but I think I really need to stick to a running schedule and get back into strength training. Not only will it burn extra calories, but it will keep me motivated and in the weight-loss mindset. Is everyone having success so far? |

I don't have any great insight into this issue that someone else hasn't already said but I do have an interesting story. My sister Hannah is 18 years old and is a two sport varsity athlete in college, is really fit, and is a very conscientious eater (she's a vegetarian, and eats about 2000 calories a day). I've heard people describe her a "built", "thin", "fit"...basically any variation on trim and athletic you can imagine. She has something like 16% body fat and weighs about 145 pounds. So Hannah is taking this year off from school and spending it in Uganda working in an orphanage. The other day, she was playing soccer with some of the local boys and men in her town (none of the Ugandan women play soccer) and when she took a break because of the heat (the Equator doesn't work well for us Irish folk), someone asked her if she was tired because of her obesity. I managed to make that story incredibly long, but my point is just that every culture has a different standard. |

| I'm glad I could help!! Part of the reason I put so much back on was because I started a new relationship, which involved eating a LOT of meals at restaurants. When I realized I only weighed about 10 pounds less than my boy, who is like 3 inches taller and not super skinny, I knew I had to change back to my old ways. Good luck luvcooking (I love cooking, too :)). And yeah, working out is soo helpful! | |||

| I'm between 5'10 and 5'11, and I'm currently at 175 with about 25% body fat. I'm aiming for about 145, which is in the bottom half of my "healthy" BMI range. Some of you might think this sounds low, but I'm 19 years old and very, very active. I've cleared it with my doctor. My body frame is between medium and large, but I have a lot of muscle. | |||

| Hey y'all, I talked to a different physical therapist last night (my uncle), and he suggested that I also stretch my achille's tendon every morning and night, along with the stretches I'm doing for the fascia. As far as getting back into running, he suggested that I start walking, and when I can walk without discomfort, that I start adding in some slow running, just until the fascia starts to hurt. Then go back to walking. He said it is possible I just plain old can't run anymore, but also possible that by working myself up to it I can get back into running eventually. | |||

| Ugh... I was diagnosed with PF a couple of months ago. I used to run about four miles every day, and now it takes about a week of recovery for each mile I run. Thus, I no longer run.
I don't really have any great suggestions, except to make sure that you have good foot support, good shoes, and work with your doctor. My physical therapist showed me some things that strengthen the muscles around the fascia (spelling?), and they seem to help a little. He has me bunch up a towel with my toes, and just curl my toes any time I'm sitting still. Good luck!! |

| Weight Loss | Question on my diet | Feb 19 2007 15:08 (UTC) |

| I really don't think she is saying that she is cutting out eating, and only drinking instead. She says she will "have breakfast lunch and tea", and for drinks she will "drink only water and occasionally fruit juice". She is saying she is going to cut out crisps (I think those are chips?) and chocolate. She is trying to lose 4 pounds in two weeks, which is totally reasonable. The question here is whether or not the weight loss can be maintained if she goes back to eating her crips after the performance. Shanonna, to answer your question, it depends on how many calories you take in overall and how much you exercise. However, it isn't really a good idea to try to lose a bunch of weight for a specific event in the near future. Rather, you should approach weight loss as a healthy lifestyle, and one that can be maintained for life. Make sure to eat a balanced diet, or you won't have enough energy for your performance! And keep in mind that not many people in the audience will be able to notice four pounds. |

| ohmyikc I'm eating whatever I want, but in controlled portions. It
almost always ends up being very healthy food, anyways. I'm also at the
gym 4-5 days a week. I do 45-60 minutes of cardio and some body weight
resistance training. I've found that even at 172, where I am now, I'm starting to look rather thin, but maybe I'm just becoming complacent. In another 15 pounds, I'm going to reassess my goal and see if I really feel like I need to lose that much more. I can see my abs now! Not exactly a six pack quite yet, but they are clearly visible when I wake up in the morning. So what "diet" is everyone else doing? |

| As a high school lacrosse coach, I suggest that if you have the time, go out for a sport! A lot of the sports, especially the individual ones like track, swimming, tennis, etc, don't care if you are good or not. This is especially true if you go to a small school. Even if you aren't good enough to win any points for your team, and some schools might even not have all of their athletes compete at all the games/matches/meets, you will still get to exercise regularly, make new friends, and all that. Good luck! | |||
