Fitness training for a full marathon in 4-6 weeks Jul 21 2009

This just really got my attention because I've been thinking something similar (about the Montreal marathon, even!!!) I've run the Montreal 1/2 for the past 2 years. With some training, but not necessarily a "half marathon training program". I've taken much of the past year off because I was worried about getting a stress fracture in one of my feet after the 1/2 last year. Now I'm trying to decide whether or not to do the 1/2 again... or even shoot for the whole thing. I ran the 1/2 fairly quick, but wouldn't be trying to do anything other than just finish the marathon.

So i'm interested in continuing to see comments as they come in...

Health & Support Anyone out there the same height? :) Jan 03 2009
01:54 (UTC)

I'm 5'2 and approx 115 (although i've been as low as 107 and as high as 122)

It sure is triggering to hear so many people our height talk about being 105 or less... it's probably healthy in some people, but not many. Right now i'm trying to come to terms with my current weight...

i don't wish i were tall, particuarly... but 5'5ish would be so nice!

Hi there.I'm currently 5'2" and 114-5. my low weight was 107 and i really liked being at that weight, but i still wanted to lose more. now at 115 i still haven't gotten my period for over a year.

i totally know where you are and i'm so so sorry you feel so crappy. but as others have said you do look very good, and would also look good if you weighed a little more.

i ate about 2300 to get from 107 to 114. now i eat about 2000-2300 to maintain 115. however, i also get a lot of exercise (approx 60 mins of cardio, 5 days a week, plus some lifting 2x a week or so) so that somewhat explanis how much food i eat. but honestly i've been amazed at how i haven't ballooned in size from eating this much. i'm working with a nutritionist and trying to get my weight, body compositoin, and diet to a place where i can menstruate again, because right now that is the most important thing for me (i have already begun to experience the beginnign of bone loss. and that is scary and irreversible). I'm 22, by the way.

Best of luck, feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or need to talk.

I agree with others' comments, but as a 21-yr old college student myself, I have to say that your plan sounds a lot like mine, and sounds pretty good. If you're going to eat less on days you plan to drink, i think it sounds like you have a pretty reasonable approach. don't forget to drink lots of water and maybe have a small planned snack while you are out drinking.

happy partying!

Weight Gain not gaining weight even though we binge? i dont get it Aug 27 2008

I'm not sure, except to say that your current weight is at the very low end of normal, and depending on your frame and genetic factors, it may actually be too low. If this is the case, I would think your body would be dying to gain a few pounds, and would take advantage of the opportunity to do so. However, if you're eating less than you should be outside of the binges, that might explain the lack of weight gain. I don't binge, but I eat a LOT too (2100-2400/day, every day), and have struggled to put on any weight (I'm 5'3", 112, and still am not menstruating, so I need to keep gaining until my body finds a happy weight).

Anyone else out there eating roughly this much?

Not huge amounts for quick-as-possible weight gain, but well over 2000 calories?

As a kid I had "It's Perfectly Normal"

I think it was a good one. It covers body changes + sex, and is pretty open-minded and frank, while being accessible to children.

Hi. I'm about 5'3". I currently weigh about 113, but I'm still not menstruating. I weighed about 118-122 pre-ed, and for now I'm trying ot get to 115 or whatever is necesary to get my period back and be healthy!

BMI is a useful tool, but there's a lot more to healthy weight than that. Body composition, for example.

Thanks. That's really good to hear. Especially the part about maintaining, because my line of reasoning goes that because I'm barely even underweight (my BMI isn't underweight, I guess I'm just underweight for me and what's healthiest for my body) that I can/should eat like I'm trying to lose weight. Which really makes almost no sense.
Good to hear that I'm not the only one eating much more than 2000 calories/day.

ps, I climb too :)

I know. Magazines are really the devil. I really don't believe that the "big bad media" caused my ED, but it sure hasn't made recovery any easier.

I haven't really cut back on exercise, but I've continued eating more. I am still hungry, and it definitely isn't a "struggle" to eat that much, at least not physically. I haven't had a nutritionist appointment, so I haven't had a weigh-in for awhile. I don't really think I've gained weight, but I don't trust myself anymore. Still no sign of the period.

Is it really actually okay to eat so much? I feel so gluttonous!

I agree with what everyone has said. You look great! I'd say you're at a good weight now and shouldn't try to go too much lower. Instead, I'd focus on what you already know you need to (toning by lifting weights, and not going overboard with the alcohol).

Several people have mentioned having gw's of 110 or less at 5'3. I just want to point out that although this is not "underweight" according to BMI, depending on your body composition, frame size, metabolism, etc, it might be not enough. For instance, at 5'3 and 110 lbs, I don't menstruate. So that's something ot keep in mind. I think you look great at the weight you are. Good work! Laughing

Hm. Thanks guys.

I try to give myself breaks from working out, but I feel extra anxious on those days, which just makes me worry that I have an exercise problem too. The good news is, though, that I've been doing about an hour of cardio for awhile now. I haven't been increasing beyond that.

It's just so hard to wrap my mind around eating 2300+ calories a day in this world where everywhere are magazines with 1600 cal meal plans and stuff. I know that's for people who need to lose weight, but since I'm pretty close to a good weight anyway, it seems rediculous to be eating so much. I haven't gotten overweight yet, though, so I guess it's okay?

I don't want to be a kill-joy, and I also know this post is about what makes you happy, not necesarily what is medically desireable...

but I can't help but notice that there are a lot of ED recoverers who are putting their "happy" weight much lower than a healthy weight is... but not commenting as such.

I think that one of the, perhaps unavoidable, problems of this site is that there is constant reinforcement of the "thin is better" message, and people asking for advice to achieve unhealthy weights.

Please, I understand how a happiest weight can be underweight. It would be mine too, as I am also recovering from an ED. But if you post this, perhaps you should also aknowlege that it shouldn't be a goal for someone else jsut because it is a weight that makes you "happy".

Thanks!

Many good points, elle.

Also, everyone is different, and an 18.5 bmi might not be enough to regain your period. I, for example, weigh about 112 at 5'3" and I sitll have not gotten my period for over a year. My nutritionist thinks I need to weigh about 115 (as well as have an adequate diet, etc) to menstruate again. That scares the hell out of me, and I can't help but wish I could get my period at a lower weight. maybe eventually I will be able to, but right now the best strategy I have is to try to accept gaining a few pounds.

thank you jessiep for your lovely response. it is not an easy thing to give up disordered ways of thinking, and I can't say I'm 100% committed yet. It's a good reminder, though, that I am not only helping myself, but also reminding others that there is such a thing as a healthy, even enjoyable, relationship with food, and that in the long run healthy muscles, bones, heart, brain, etc are much more important than a few pounds of body weight right now.

i feel the same. i, however, am about 110 and 5'3. that is a BMI of just under 20. not even underweight by some standards, yet I havn't gotten my preiod for about 9 months. i too, fluctuate in terms of how motivate i am to lose weight, esp ecausei actually do not look too skiny and by some standards i am not. but even 2 months of not menstruating when you should can do damage. i'm really trying to stik with it and be willing to gain until i get my period back, but its hard to saty motivated enouh. i am also very active. i think this may have something to do with it, because i probably have a relatievly low bf% so may require a slightly higher weight to get my period back. i duno... arg its really ard.
Weight Loss Girls 5ft 3inchs and under ? what is your calorie intake? Dec 19 2007
19:36 (UTC)

I'm 5'3" and 110. I'm recovering from ED-NOS and eating 2000-2100 calories per day. I maintain on this number of calories, although I do cardio for about an hour 6x/wk, so that is probably why. Right now I am maintaining, but my nutritionist would like me to gain a few pounds.

Do you girls who are in the 90s or low 100s still get your periods? If you've lost yours or you are an age where you should have it but don't yet, it's really important that you please see your doctor and/or consider gaining weight or stop losing weight. For me, that's the biggest thing right now. 110 is a healthy weight for 5'3", but it isn't for me personally because I can't menstruate at this weight, so I risk bone loss and possibly infertility if I lose anymore weight or don't gain enough weight and fat to be a healthy woman. It may only take a few pounds. Right now my goal weight is 113, and I'll probably have to eat 2100-2200 calories to reach it, or back off the exercise. Needless to say, for someone with an ED, this is very hard. I'm still struggling to accept this idea and act on it.

Hi! Yay being on the shorter end of things!

I'm 20 yrs old,

122/109

Maintaining/gaining to make sure I get my period. Does anybody else who's 5'3" know the weight at which they stop/start getting their period? I got mine at 110-111, but haven't for a few months now, and am trying to get it back with the help of my nutritionist. It's really helpful to see so many people with good, healthy goal weights instead of shooting for extreme thinness. It's a message I (and many others) need to get into my head.

Cheers!

Original Post by alieecat:

Hmm it doesn't sound like anything's wrong with you to me. I'm an ex-dancer and most of the people at my studio shared similar stats with you. It's mainly from all the extra excercise, also weight loss can lead to appetite loss, but still you sound pretty normal to me. If you're worried see a doctor, see what they have to say.

i'd be hesitant to listen to this advice. no offense alieecat, but the fac that others in a dance studio setting are underweight is no indication that it is okay. i agree with muttlover and adryael. i think you have an eating disorder, but its okay. there's a stigma attached to that label, but there shouldn't be. its a psychological struggle that many of us have to deal with. please get help before you get any sicker. the last thing you would want would be to end up in the hospital or be forbidden from dancing, right? pm me if you want to talk more

I'd say definitely 2000 healthy calories is almost ALWAYS going to be better than 1,200 empty ones. You can be malnourished even if you eat enough calories, and also very few people can be healthy on 1200 calories anyway. It's too few for most people. Additionally, the only potential benefit of eating a lower calorie diet while sacrificing nutrition would be for a person who was mobidly obese to lose weight. However, anyone that large would probably have a huge maintainence level and therefore be able to lose (albeit slowly) on a 2000 calorie diet.

Try multigrain cheerios (similarly sweet, but healthier). My personal favorites are Kashi Golean and fiber one.

On another note, I know you may be a dancer and your family may have a history of diabetes, but you are much too young to be worrying about weight, limiting calories, etc. You're growing, and while incorporating whole grains and reducing soda consumption, etc is good for anyone, try to not worry about it too much. Enjoy being a kid! You're slim, healthy, and beautiful, and as you age your body will change shape. Embrace it!

it's evolutionary. our bodies find thigns that are high in fats and sugars to be tastiest because back when we were evolving and food was often scarse, it was very advantageous to want to eat high calorie foods when they were available. unfortunately we don't really need this anymore, as for most of us, a whole variety of foods is very abudantly available...

gosh this is going downhill fast, and i probably don't want to get involved. i see both sides of this. some people are naturally thin, and they have a right to not have negative assumptions/stereotypes applied to them. on the other hand, i think we *should* all be able to agree that there are many models (and people of other professions, but models in particular) who lead very unhealthy lifestyles in order to maintain their bodies for their job. i simply think we need to keep in mind that models may not be good people to emulate and we may not want to strive for their bodies, because for most of us, really unhealthy habits would be required to look the way they do. finding out "how much they eat" or what pills they take, or their exercise regimins is perhaps interesting, but not particuarly useful, because these details are probably either extreme and unhealthy or will work only for people with the genetic predisposition.
