There are many possibilities. - It could be gas - It could be a pulled chest muscle - It could be symptoms of an oncoming heartattack I would see a doctor ASAP. Chest pains and left-arm tingling isn't something to mess around with. |

| An interesting facet of forcing people to stow their laptops with their
baggage - many, many companies (for obvious security reasons) require
their employees to keep company laptops with them at all times. 5% of all bags are mishandled. Many companies cannot risk sensitive information being dropped into the airline baggage system. It's an interesting dilemma. You know those wrist-bands or shirts or rings that change color with your mood? I think I need a terror-alert one. "Today you are VERY scared." |

| The Lounge | So this is where the bad eating habits start... | Aug 10 2006 16:41 (UTC) |

| Yup! When I was little, we got spanked if we misbehaved in public at all. The result was that we often got free desserts or treats at restaurants because the waiter/waitress couldn't believe that three young boys could eat a meal without misbehaving. I, of course, took this a bit far and would occasionally stand morosely at the dessert counter in cafes and stare silently with big eyes, hoping that a worker would give me a freebie. It worked just often enough! |

What's interesting is that this exact same plot was almost attempted in 1995. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bojink a Scan down to 3.2 Airline Bombing Plot and 3.3 The Bomb. The liquid explosive looked just like water. You'd think after 10 years that our airport security would be a bit more ready for this type of bomb? I'm glad that British law enforcement were able to stop it. I just wish they scanned and inspected plane cargo. Did you know that while we, the passengers, have to take off our shoes, throw out our sharp objects, etc., the third-party cargo in the plane isn't inspected? |

| Weight Loss | How many of you daily calories do you eat before dinner? | Aug 10 2006 04:23 (UTC) |

| I eat about 50% (give or take) of my calories before dinner. I
find that I can handle hunger easier during the day rather than during
the evening, since I can keep active at work and distract myself.
For myself, I have to make sure that I have enough calories budgeted
for the evening, otherwise I'll get hungry and snack waaay to much
around 9pm or 10pm. Of course, I've only been doing this for a week and a half, so I'm not sure yet how well this works! Your mileage may vary. |

I used to snack all the time on the computer, especially while playing
online video games for (unhealthy) stretches of time. Since starting here last week, I always keep at least one winow/tab of my browser open to calorie-count.com. Whenever I feel like snacking, I go and look at my food log. Sometimes, it inspires me just not to snack because I know I can't afford it. Other times, I realize that, hey!, I could slip in a few calories without throwing my daily count off - then I run and get a snack guilt free! |

Yup, yup! I'm in the same boat. Before I started here at CC, I'd eat 75% of my lunch by 10 am. Now, I've been increasing my calories at breakfast (I eat an egg along with my cereal) and then I have scheduled snacks. At 10 am, I get my granola bar. In fact, I'm going to open it and munch as I type! Yay! At 11 am, I get some fruit. Today, I have a clementine. |

| Hmmm ... not sure that works for bigger guys, at least. I am 6'2" and my ideal weight is 175 lbs. With light activity, I would burn 2600 calories in a day. If I were only to eat 1,750 calories, I'm fairly sure that I would faint. I WOULD lose weight, though, I guess ... |

| Good scheme! My wife and I divide up most of our dessert junk
food into two bags. One for her, one for me. Then we both
try to make our bag last longer than the other and we can see how much
the other has left (and get on their case if necessary). Making one's own 100 calorie snack bags is a great idea, though! I may have to try that. |

I'm not sure if an old guy like me is allowed to sneak into this ...
I'm a graduate student and I'm trying to lose the weight that I gained
in college. I was studying for my phd qualifying exams this last
semester and I was literally reading a book-a-day. I stopped all
exercise and ate a lot of comfort food. I'm now 20 pounds over my
ideal weight. At least I passed my exams! My stats: 27 years old, 6'2", 195 lbs. I have a fantasy of reaching 175 pounds, which is what I weighed in my freshman year. Hopefully, I can undo the last 10 years of bad eating. (Yikes, that makes me feel really old to say!). |

Hurrah! I used to scorn diet soda and I thought it tasted
horrible. Finally though, I had heard so many people say that they "got used" to diet soda and that now it tasted better to them than regular, that I decided that there was nothing to lose by making myself only drink diet. It's amazing how many calories it cuts out! After a few years of being a diet soda drinker, I now find regular soda to be sickly sweet and I don't like it all that much. Good work! |

| Weight Loss | Do some men want to keep their woman fat? | Aug 01 2006 18:24 (UTC) |

Here's my response as a 20-something guy - It's possible that he's trying to manipulate you or he's compensating for his own insecurities. Very possible. In the case of my own wife, however, I know that sometimes I do like to tempt her with desserts (though, unlike me, she rarely needs to watch what she eats). Why might a guy do this? Three reasons: Reason #1 - He likes the curves. Reason #2 - Your diet reminds him that you like yummy foods and that you are currently in a state in which you want them more than usual. It's an easy, affordable way to make you happy and to make himself feel like he's spoiling you. Reason #3 - When a woman is on a diet, she's basically saying that she's unhappy with the way that she is. By giving you unhealthy food, maybe he's letting you know that he finds you attractive and that you don't need to go on a diet for him to be attracted to you. Hopefully, a quick conversation should remind him that YOU need to be happy with your health and weight and that you know he finds you attractive and that he can show this in other ways. Maybe even ways that burn some calories ... |
