I do kung fu (jow ga to be exact) and I love it.  If TKD is anything like kung fu - and I think it is with the kicks and whatnot - you'll get a lot of great leg and abs work.  Flexibility increases as well, which I wasn't expecting.  Martial arts are great for exercise, burn a lot of calories, and build strength as well.

Fitness jump rope? Nov 19 2007

I swear by jumping rope.  It's one of the best workouts you can do.  It burns a ton of calories, works the legs, core, and arms, improves agility and footwork.  It's great.  Make sure to jump on a forgiving surface though.  No concrete or sidewalks, it'll hurt the joints.  Try parking lots or hardwood floors.  Helped me lose about 40 lbs.  Good stuf.

Alright, it took me a couple months, but I finally found a studio and started last night.  The style is Jow Ga kung fu, website available here: http://www.jowga.org/home.php.  Seriously though, I was getting showed up by 12 year olds the whole time.  It was awesome :)  Anyone else practice a kung fu style?  I think I'll work on the step form today during my usual lunch workout.  I'm sure it'll confuse the hell out of my coworkers down in the gym.  Thanks for the advice and the insight!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys; I really appreciate it.  I think I'll try those Sony headphones since I think I remember seeing them at the Best Buy the other day after my third attempt to find decent headphones.

Oh, and behanna, you blaspheme! :-)  No matter how hipster you are, everyone should love a little GNR (not to mention AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and the Drive-By Truckers).

Personally, I'm not a real big fan of supplements.  Particularly, anything that is more than a protien supplement.  IMHO, they are at best useless and at worst dangerous to your long-term health.  I say stick with the basics: Exercise more, eat less, mostly vegetables.

Besides, Hydroxy Cut's ads are really, really annoying :-P

Alt Country - Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Whiskeytown, Nekko Case, the Watson Twins, Drive-By Truckers, Bottle Rockets, Indigo Girls (although more of a neo-folk outfit).  Oh, and the most recent Bonnie "Prince" Billy record with Matt Sweeney titled Superwolf was amazing; you should all go download it now.  Oh, and the Kinks may be the best British band ever (damn Beatles and the Who stealing their thunder).

pandajenn, that maybe the coolest thing I have ever seen.  Being kind of a DIY guy, I think I maybe able to rig something like that.  Thanks for the great idea, and thanks everyone for the advice.  Sounds like it shouldn't be too bad.  I'll know more after Friday.  Take it easy.

Hi guys, name's James.  I'm new to biking and commuting by bike.  In fact, I will make my first full home-to-work commute on Friday, National Bike to Work Day.  So far, I've been biking to the Metro and back, a significantly shorter distance.

My problems are two-fold.  After have a guide on Friday, I'm on my own to commute.  Washington, DC was one of the top road rage cities this year.  What should I know about commuting in a crowded, urban environment?  I.e. - How do I bike in downtown DC without getting myself killed?

2nd, I work in a professional environment.  I have a shower/locker at my office, but what about transporting the clothing?  How do you transport a shirt/tie/slacks combo 6 miles in a gym bag and not look like you rolled out of bed in it?

Thanks in advance!
Weight Loss Saran Wrap... May 04 2007

Hydrocortisone is an anti-inflamatory, so I supposed a topical cream could, briefly, reduce phyiscal size of the body by reducing inflamation, but I don't think that would help the sagging/etc of extreme weight loss.   Personally, the idea of wrapping myself with Saran Wrap, with or w/o smearing my tummy with hydrocortisone, sounds, I don't know, kind of wierd regardless.

The craziest diet advice is basically anything that doesn't boil down to this: exercise more, eat less, mostly vegetables.

That's really all the diet advice anyone needs (which of course doesn't prevent me from scouring the CC forums for tips ;)

I love Mythbusters!  Anyway, ice water can sometimes cause stomach cramps, but it's rare.  We used to have to worry about it when I played tennis sometimes.  It was summer in Texas, so about 120 degrees on the court.  But really, I wouldn't worry about it too much if you're just hitting the cardio machines at the gym and stick a couple of ice cubes in your bottle.

Thank god for strong immune systems.  Being a former employee of a couple of fast food places, those places need the addictive pleasure of cheese, mayo, and fat just to keep people from thinking about what happens in the back of the house.  Just remember, every restaurant has some 'special mayonaise' somewhere.  *shudder*

It gets easier really quickly.  The muscles you use just don't get worked-out all that often, so it takes about a week or so to work up to a full 30 mins (at least it did me).  But you can start slow by skipping rope.  Basically, you bounce twice on your foot, rotating the rope more slowly.  Hard to explain, but easier than standard two-footed, jump-per-rotation style.  I'd put the hyperlink to a video in here, but my work blocks access.  Go to YouTube, if you can though, and search for 'instructional jump rope.'  You'll find plenty of stuff.  Good luck!

Yeah for jumping rope!  It's what I originally used to drop about 35-40 lbs.  I changed up my cardio routine to cycling, rowing, and tennis for variety, but I recently returned to jumping rope for my cardio.

Anyway, as terrier said, jumping rope is not that hard on your knees.  I have Osgood-Slaughters in my knee, and my orthapedist passed off on it, so you should be alright.  Try to have a good surface to jump on: asphault before concrete, better on hardwood/laminate gym flooring.  They also sell jump ropes that will keep count of calories burned, time, # of jumps, etc.  Only about $10-12 at Target.

Other observations: try not to get the ropes with the plastic cyliners.  The friction wears them down pretty fast.  Worry more about your ankles than your knees.  I sometimes wear an ankle brace.  The soreness will be excrutiating after day one (like most exercises I guess).  Stick with it.  It'll definitely tone upper and lower body as well as helping your agility and footwork.  Plus, it's fun as hell!

Have you ever had a shoulder injury before?  My shoulder was injured when I used to be a tennis player and occassionally my shoulder will make a popping sound when I exercise.  Particularly when I do shoulder presses.  Usually (if there's no pain involved) it's air escaping from the joint and shouldn't cause too much of a problem.  Obviously, if the problem persists or causes pain, you should go see an orthapedist (sp?).  I compensate by using a lower weight and higher repititions.

Salinger, Douglas Adams, Heinlien, Heller, everybody already took all the good ones :P

There are some interesting modern authors: Christopher Moore and Laurel K. Hamilton if you like schlocky horror/sci-fi/vampire humor.  George R.R. Martin for excellent modern sci-fi.

And no one has mentioned Truman Capote.  Scandalous!

I love to jumprope for exercise.  What I like to do is hop on one leg twice in a row, and then switch for another two hops, like so: RR,LL,RR,LL

Then go up to 3-4 times on each leg, back and forth.  Just make sure that you use both legs, and don't do the one-legged jump on just one side.
