Weight Loss Why is food suggestion generator recommending such junk? Sep 30 2007

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the suggestions are bizzare - mine today suggests changing lowfat ground turkey to fried chicken, skim milk to 2% and regular plain cheerios to yogurt-coated cheerios - I think in all 3 cases, those are downgrades from what I already do!!
Weight Loss Eating back your calories doesn't make sense. May 22 2007

As an observation, reading through this whole thread, I think one problem that some folks are having is with the terminology - the group is not advocating across the board that any calories burned in exercise should be "eaten back".  That's not the point of this.  The point is that those exercise calories burned need to be incorporated when you calculate your total deficit for the day.  I think hairgurl32 (#10) spelled out the calculations in the most straightforward way - Take your normal expenditure (assuming you list your lifestyle as sedentary), add any calories burned in exercise to your daily expenditure, and then deduct a HEALTHY deficit from that total.  THAT's how many calories you should be eating.  And if your chosen calorie deficit drops you below 1200 calories for the day, then you reduce the deficit accordingly.  So we're not saying that everyone who exercises has to eat back all the calories that they have burned, we're just saying that if you're not eating enough to begin with, and then you exercise on top of that, you do need to up the intake!

So is anyone else having trouble getting below 200?  I seem to have this stumbling block - right now I'm at 206.  I've been down as low as 202, but I can't seem to get below 200 for love or money!  I had this happen previously on diets, and now that I've changed my lifestyle, the main difference is that now that I've reached this point (I'm sure it's a plateau, but it's weird that it's always the same spot on the scale!), I didn't just give up and gain it all back.  I've lost 35 lbs so far, and I'm thrilled with that, but I can't seem to get below 200, which is my next big goal!  I've been holding steady for about 3 months now (some of which was because of the holidays, but i'm back on track now)  Anyone else run into this?
Foods Food ideas - post-wisdom teeth removal Feb 22 2007

Ooh, some good ideas here.  I love the "cooking" with baby food.  My biggest concern is, as was mentioned above, so many soft foods are sweet things, and while I have a sweet tooth, I figure I'm going to want some things that are savory (but not baby food savories, that  is kinda scary).  For those of you who have been through this - pasta - I 've seen Mac and Cheese mentioned, but other places I've seen that pasta still needs chewing, and bits can get stuck in the holes, causing problems - what was your experience?

I think this week is going to be spent making lots of soups and mashed potatoes to have ready.  My SO is useless in the kitchen, so I want to be ready (and not have to rely on all processed foods) before I go under and come out groggy on the other side!  SO not looking forward to this...... but as my dentist keeps telling me, I'm not getting any younger!  (gee thanks!)

Veganlove -
I have one of those from Target too - they are nice, but I've found that as I wash them in the dishwasher, they've picked up food odors, and mine leaks, which makes it a pain to throw in the gym bag with water in it...

On another note, Snopes.com lists the carcinogen fear of disposable water bottles as false, and cites this article from Johns Hopkins:

http://www.jhsph.edu/PublicHealthNews/article s/Halden_dioxins.html

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottl es.asp

I skimmed the article, and while he says that dioxins aren't going to be a problem, heated plastic still can give off phthalates, which don't sound like something you want in your water either...

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!  Turns out part of my problem was that I didn't know the vocabulary of water bottles (who knew it was such a complicated subject!)  Splash guard - THAT's what I needed!  So I've got a splash guard for my Nalgene, which is great.  I'm also trying out one of those Swedish Sigg bottles (they're so pretty! hehe) - they have a sports cap that comes apart into pieces for easy cleaning, is leak proof even when the cap is open, and that you just push with your mouth to open and drink - I haven't tried that one out yet, so I'll let everyone know what I think.

Yeah, I've also read that reusing the commercial plastic water bottles too much is problematic - a combination of bacteria build-up and plastic degredation.

I'm just really oogy about bacteria, particularly in something I reuse over and over, which is why I don't like those bendy straws and pop-up squirt bottles - too many little spaces that I know aren't getting as clean as I'd like....

So I couldn't quite tell from their website - how does the Podfitness integrate the coaching with the music?  Is it just a matter of lowering the volume when they talk, and the pacing is entirely dependent on what music you choose?

I'm intrigued... I might have to try iTrain... I'm not sure if I'd like having a trainer talking to me the whole time or not, so I like that you can do a la carte to try it out... although the Podfitness thing with your own music is cool (but pricey, and who does a "pod" software that isn't Mac compatible??)  Is it just me being a tv geek, or is it funny that iTrain has Mimi (the biting girlfriend of Bravo's Workout fame), and the though of Danny Bonaduce as a motivating trainer in my ear (at Podfitness) is hilarious....

I think this, like everything else, is not an across the board fix.  Certainly for me, if I did that math, it would mean I shouldn't eat anything less than 2130 calories, which is balony, because I would never lose weight that way (believe me, I've tried).  To lose, I need to keep it at the 1600 range.

Thanks for posting the collection Ali... I agree that there are other outrageous numbers in there, but I still think, based on the outfits surrounding hers, she was there more for shock value than anything.  If he really wanted to show that big is just as beautiful as twig, he should have put her in one of the more 'ready to wear' outfits.  And a couple of the bits I've been reading about the show say he did it to protest the Madrid decision, which makes me think that shock was still his main goal (and we all know, everything on the internet is true! lol).  But I make no claim to be a fashionista, so what do I know??  And you're right - no way she's a 20... I'm a 20, and 80 lbs lighter than she is.

I haven't been able to find any pictures of the full collection, but I think this quote matches what I'm seeing in the pictures (from the Sydney Morning Herald):

In what seemed more of a nod to front-row guest, the burlesque artiste Dita Von Teese, Gaultier sent out the plus-sized Paris-based American model and actress Velvet d'Amour, 39, in a satin corset and negligee. The rest of his collection was on a "workout" theme, an athletic wear-inspired collection of silk track pants, hooded sweat tops and dresses.

So if that's the case, then I have a BIG problem with him sending her out in that - because clearly he just wanted to shock.  And what BETTER type of collection to show larger models in, than one about getting into shape???

But was it a lingerie show?  Look at the Sun picture - the other models out there with her, the one with the red top and some sort of jean short behind, and the one next to her in a black top and leggings of some description, don't look nearly as over the top and fantasy as she does, and certainly not lingerie.  I'd like to see what everyone else was wearing, because if he put her in that getup (which I think is ugly, but that's just me), and then sent everyone else out in more tame items, then I have a real problem with the way he used his "plus sized" model, and would question his motives.  Size for shock value is not helpful.

Camel crickets - THAT's what invade our shed!  Thanks guys, I never knew what they were - they are really skeevy.  I did a google search, and this link in the Wikipedia article cracked me up:

House centipedes are a natural predatory form of control, but most homeowners are uncomfortable having them around, despite their beneficial nature.

Because of course, replacing a house full of crickets with a house full of centipedes, now THAT's a great idea... ;)  I think I'd prefer the crickets (black ones, not the camel -they are really creepy).

I agree that last night was sad... one of the show's highlights is the quirky, witty banter, and when everyone is sad, there is a lot less of that.  But I still love it.  But Lorelei belongs with Luke.  She just does.
Weight Loss chocolate Sep 23 2006

Chocolate is my biggest vice, I just cannot resist.  My solution is to allow myself to have small amounts, i.e. 3 Hershey kisses after dinner, which is 75 calories - certainly won't ruin the day for me, but it resolves the fix - if you let them melt in your mouth, and take a long time to eat them, that helps too.
Fitness Do you always warm up?/Problems with injuries... Sep 23 2006

I generally try and do a bit of a warmup (a slow start), but don't always stretch before going into the heavy part of the workout, but I ALWAYS stretch afterward.  And I was also always taught that you never stretch cold muscles - do some brisk walking or light rowing or light elliptical before you stretch, and the stretches at the start of your workout aren't as long as the ones at the end - so at the start, hold for 10 seconds, after workout, hold for 30+ seconds.  But that's just what I was taught.

I know that when I was taking aquacize, in the winter, when the water was cooler, our instructor never had us stretch after warming up, because she felt keeping our muscles moving and warmed up was more important, but again, we always stretched at the end.

Oh, count me in with the addicts... I watch entirely too much tv, and my dual tuner digital recorder now allows me to watch even more!

Prison Break, Gilmore Girls, My Name is Earl, Grey's Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, Weeds, Entourage, The Wire, The Office, Project Runway, Top Chef, tons of BBC America stuff, Numbers, and now this season I'm acquiring new favorites, including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Vanished and Standoff... Rescue Me.... I could go on and on and on and on...

First step is admitting you have a problem.... ;)

Yeah, I was getting frustrated about this too - I've lost 25 lbs, and I'm only just now getting down to the next size, but when I thought about it, what prompted me to really get serious about losing weight in the first place (one of the things anyway) was that my clothes no longer fit, so in reality, I was probably a size larger than I was admitting to, so the progress shows because the size I said I was now fits and is starting to be too big, even if the next size down doesn't quite fit yet.  Patience.... it will come.  And I've heard from other folks here that it is slow at first, and then speeds up as you lose....   hang in there!

Okay, so for my next question - and HK, I think you answered this - how much do I lose not having the computer uplink, and can I get by without?  I'm a Mac girl, and Polar isn't Mac compatible, and a quick google search didn't turn up any good alternatives that are...

They always send the top 4 to Fashion Week, so that it doesn't ruin the surprise of the show.  So Austin Scarlett had a show from 1st season, and um um um, I'm blanking who #4 was last season, but they got a show too.

Fitness Elliptical Gripe! Sep 15 2006

Our gym has ellipticals with the staitionary support handles on the side, and I find that  I have to hold them lightly to balance myself, particularly if I'm going at a decent speed, or on an incline, or both.  So my question for the collective group is, since not holding on helps with your core muscles, would it be better to go slower (but in theory burning less calories??) and not hold on, or because I'm not leaning heavily on the handles, and going at a decent pace, should I just continue as I have been?  Thoughts?
Fitness Bicycle recommendations? Sep 15 2006
16:36 (UTC)
Thanks again everyone for the good advice!!  After a number of test rides, I decided to get a Giant Sedona DX.  It arrived yesterday, and I'm taking it out for my first ride tonight!  Can't wait.  I actually tried a few bikes with much larger and cushier saddles, and didn't like the feel of them at all.  The Sedona has a gel saddle, but it's smaller than most, so I'll have to see how it is for a longer ride than the test riding I've done.  The bike shop folks made sure I had everything set up correctly, handle bar distances, saddle, etc., so I should be good to go.  Hurrah!  I'll let you know what I think after I've ridden it for awhile.

I agree that a lot of them are one-note.  Uli and Laura especially, but Jeffry's rocker thing is getting old.  I want Michael to win.  His designs are fantastic, he clearly has the creativity and the eye, and his stuff doesn't all look the same.

So do you think they had already decided to let the winners have a second try, or do you think the producers were just trying to milk the annoyance of Vincent and Angela one last time?

Does anyone listen to Tim's podcasts?  They have been the best work-out listen I've had yet - I get so caught up in his stories, the time flies by! ;)

I couldn't have put it better ninav - you have hit upon my concerns, and the reason my heart sank when I saw the about.com logo on the front page, along with all the flashing ads.  I too understand the importance of ads and the revenue they generate, but about.com in my opinion is one of the worst out there for pop-ups and invasive ads.   I never use their site for this very reason.

I do believe that Erik and Igor want to see the best for this site, and I hope that they can keep the blatant commerciality under control.
Motivation Going to VS and how it made me feel today Sep 10 2006
16:44 (UTC)

This has been an ongoing pet peeve of mine about most mainstream retail stores - they simply do not cater to larger women!  VS is notorious for that... the fact that to find the larger sizes, you have to dig around in drawers?  That's ridiculous.  And there is no reason that larger women should have to shop online, or in outlet stores, just to find clothing that fits!  Particularly when the majority of women in American probably fit in that category.

But no - stores are fully stocked in XS sizes, but you're hard pressed to find XL - if they even carry XL!

And then when you do find larger clothes, they're poorly made (unless you go to really upscale stores, where they're really expensive), unflattering  (yes, I'd like to wear that lovely tent please), tend to not be exactly cutting edge style, and more often than not are really ugly!  Those large ugly prints??  Just shoot me now.  I went clothing shopping with a thinner friend, and we went into the Plus size department, someplace she had never ventured before, and she was appalled at the options for clothing!

/end rant

Suffice it to say - we feel your pain.  Don't let them get you down!
Weight Loss question about activity log Sep 10 2006
16:11 (UTC)
6
I agree with hubbaji - if it is something that I do for a sustained period of time, that is more than I normally do in a day of desk work, I log it, but not every little move I make.

And in response to twood - just because you don't log it and record the deficit, doesn't mean the deficit doesn't still exist...

But again, as others have said, you need to do what works for you.  Generally I look at this as approximations, and a few calories in either direction isn't the end of the world.  I tend to estimate high in food calories, and low in activity calories, just to be safe.

Height - 5'6"

Highest - 241

Current - 217

Goal - 150 to start, then we'll see.

Like someone else said, I haven't weight 150 since I was in junior high, so I have no sense of what my adult body is going to look like at that weight.  This thread is helpful for me, 'cos I can look at all the pics of folks who are almost there, or maintaining, to get a sense of where I'll be, because I honestly don't know how I'll look!

Right now I've met my first goal - my wedding weight (from 3 years ago).  Next is my college weight - 185.  Then high school - 150.  It's like time travel!
