| Young Calorie Counters | Having problems with track/cross-country practice =/ Advice pleasee? | Oct 11 2008 19:42 (UTC) |

I've been there with swimming. When I was 13 I switched teams and was the absolute slowest person. So slow, I would continually be 1-2 minutes behind in a set than the slowest people. It was BAAD. Next season, I got in the pool, and I was just as fast as everyone else. Eventually, I worked myself up to beating them. I think you need to talk to your coach, because they should always care even if you are "slower" |

| Foods | Gatoraid? | Sep 17 2008 01:34 (UTC) |

| I think it is better than water, but you can't just drink it lounging about the house. Gatorade has electrolytes in it, which help balance your Na/K (sodium/potassium) levels because when you sweat they become unbalanced. It also has a lot of carbs and sugar, which is needed for a serious athlete whom is working out vigorously.
During my practices, which are 2hr to 3 1/2hrs long, I stay towards water because I don't like gatorade too much. During meets I have it because it does help. If you like gatorade so much, try the new G2 it's lower calorie gatorade. |

| Fitness | why do i need to POOP when running !?!!?!? | Aug 13 2008 03:05 (UTC) |

| Your stomach/intestines move food/poop through muscle movemts called peristotal (sp?) and running increases the movements. It happens to me too. | |||

| Running really isn't the best form of exercise, and I'm not saying that just because I'm a swimmer...teh. Well, running, especially with women having wide hips places a larger amount of pressure on the knees.
The knee is a joint, and has cartilage. As you get older, the cartilage wears down, causing arthritis from use. Running, especially with women, places even more pressure on the knees, making the cartilage wear down, and possibly damaging the bone. It isn't the best for your joints, and can cause knee problems. My friend ran track in high school, she was great, going to get a college scholarship and all, and she quit because she got tired of it. A few years later she had to have a knee replacement, and can never run again. Her doctor said running was the worst thing you can do to your body, and suggested more joint friendly sports like bike riding and swimming. |

| Health & Support | I eat sand | Apr 24 2008 01:36 (UTC) |
1 |
| Haha, I just went over this in AP Biology... Well usually you get calcium deposits in your kidney stones- not sillica. Secondly, sand is made of sillica, but not the form you swallow it in. The chemical form of sand is SiO2, the chemical equation of Si + O2 = SiO2 changes the molecular and physical appearance of sillica. So no, unless they say sillicon dioxide, you aren't eating sand. (Yeah, I get excited when it comes to science stuff...im a nerd that way) |

| I agree, not like I am a mother or anything but...it especially irks me with housewives. I hate to be rude, but what is the point of going to college if all your going to do is clean the house and change diapers? My mother is a doctor, and was my only parent. She worked part-time when I was younger, then full time when I went to school. She still manages to work out/take care of me/live a healthy lifestyle. By the way, I have two other siblings. I just don't see how housewives complain about being busy all the time, it is the American lifestyle, get used to it. |

| Fitness | These things are NOT part of your weight lifting routine (also known as strength training) | Mar 27 2008 03:39 (UTC) |

| I disagree, I think machines are much better for weight purposes. I had to "bulk up" for swim season bc I m not very muscular (more cardio) and I know lifting is especially important for bone mass and preventing osteoperosis. Machines get the job done, and much, much quicker. Free weights are harder to work on the legs/abs/back. Generally I only do free weights on my triceps, biceps, pecs. Furthermore, you do actually do some weights in pilates...yoga you have to hold yourself up in strange postitions for a long amount of time, which does build limited muscle. Running IS good for building leg muscle in the calves, quads, etc. and you can't do that easily with free weights. Free weights really don't work well, trust me. I have several National level athletes on my team, and while we all do free weights, we rely heavily on the machines. |

| Foods | what if I ONLY consume beer? | Mar 27 2008 03:33 (UTC) |
2 |
| Well, I don't believe that mantra that all calories are equal. Because, logically, you know 110+ calories of beer doesn't equal the nutritional value of the same calorie amount, healthier food. Okay, the calories are equal, but not. Alchohol makes you gain weight in the abs (thus the "beer gut") and it dehydrates you, setting you up to eat more. Not only that, but it is nasty on your liver, and alchohol is just not good for the digestion. | |||

| Swimming is great for exercise, low impact and it pretty much works out every muscle in your body. I'd suggest swim lessons if your not a strong swimmer, and swim for thirty minutes at a time and go up from there. | |||

| Foods | Sugar vs. Splenda in Recipes | May 01 2007 03:35 (UTC) |
|
| Splenda sweeteners have no calories, but splenda for baking does. You don't use the same amount of Splenda, either. If the recipe calls for 1/2 cup sugar, I believe its 1/4 cup Splenda, so you do cut calories. There is a chart on the back of the bag that has cup measurements. | |||

| Marilyn is NOT a US size 2 on any standards. She was curvy, and those curves weren't muscle, they were fat. She weighed 140 pounds, and unless your extremely tall, there is no way a 140 pound woman could fit into a US size 2, muscle or fat. | |||

| Foods | Diet Soda... You know you want it. | Mar 23 2007 21:18 (UTC) |
9 |
| I am addicted to Diet Soda. I love it! The kind generally depends on my mood, usually Diet Pepsi but sometimes I'll get Diet Root Beer, etc. I drink it daily, about three to four cups full. I know that the phosphoric acid in sodas can eat away at the calcium deposits in your bones, which can lead to osteoperosis. It also stains your teeth. I don't think it makes me gain weight, because it usally curbs my sweet tooth cravings but I read an article in Teen Vogue about artifical sweeteners causing you to crave more sugar. I don't necessarily believe it though since I'm doing okay on it. I am extra careful about the calcium loss and take calcium chews and vitamins daily, and try to drink it out of a straw to prevent tooth decay. | |||
| Foods | Help...I need something to replace chips! | Mar 23 2007 21:12 (UTC) |

| I personally love chips and couldn't give them up for anything. Those 100 calorie packs are helpful, though. I love Tostitos baked chips with guac, but that is my treat food. If you want something crunchy, try pretzel rods, popcorn, celery, rice cakes, basically what everyone else said. I understand how you feel though, I'm a sucker for chips :) | |||

| Weight Loss | Curious question about muscles and calories | Mar 22 2007 00:31 (UTC) |
1 |
| Muscle requires more calories than fat to maintain, I believe. Muscle also weighs more than fat. However, muscle takes up less room than fat, so if Person A and Person B both weigh 140 pounds, person A would look slimmer. The tools on this site are effective to a certain degree. Then again, most BMI charts register your weight as fat. So the only way to know what your true metabolic rate/bmi/expenditures are is to test your body fat percentages. until then, keep using the charts, they might be slightly off but they are still helpful | |||
