I'm currently doing The New Rules of Lifting Fat Loss III and let me tell you I've had the greatest drop in weight in a month doing this workout than in the 9 months it took me to get thru The New Rules of LIfting for Wormen. If you really want to lose body fat and lose inches trya fat loss weight lifting program. the Really Fast Fat Loss program is good - I think its on Tnation The NROL does whole body workouts instead of isolated moves. I can also say I can squat more than most of the boys cause they are too busy doing the machines and one guy asked me about squats without the machine and he was shocked at how little weight he could do with free weights vs the machines.

I think I would have told the guy he could move to another machine out of range of your hrm -- especially if you were there first- to ask someone to turn off their hrm is not right. Also if he's using hand monitoring tell him the rate is useless. He needs to invest in his own HRM or not bother. I also agree the gym needs to be notified as their machines must be less than 3 ft apart for the cross talk to happen. |

| Fitness | How many calories do YOU burn? | Nov 17 2009 11:42 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by mlkoll: The only way to figure this out is needing to know your age, weight , height sex and what your heart rate is/ was during the session. Are you lifting heavy how long of rests how many sets full body workouts or just concentrated. Too many variables and each of us is different. Lately when I do the New Rules of LIfting Fat Loss III workout I've been burning 10 - 15 calories a minute but its an intense no rest until the 4 exercises are completed then 1 min rest then back at it. My heart rate maxes out to about 160 range ( for me being 50 this is pretty darn good) I also can't get my heart rate this high doing just cardio. I'd say invest in a heart rate monitor if you really need to know your cal burn. And get one with the chest strap. |

| Fitness | Bench Press question | Nov 15 2009 16:31 (UTC) |

I use the smith machine for my push ups. I have a bum shoulder and can't do push ups off the floor with good form - girlie or otherwise. I put the bar on the 2nd rung from the bottom and angle myself so I'm as flat as possible and do the pushups from there. This is the ONLY exercise i do from this machine. I've been doing the NROL4W and there was never a bench press exercise in it -- closest thing was shoulder presses and barbell presses - I'm now doing the New Rules of Lifting and I don't see any bench presses in there either using the barbell at least. There might be in other workouts I don't have the book here its in my gum locker but I can't remember seeing a picture of how to do it.

I'm currently doing The New Rules Of Lifting Fat Loss III workout and since starting on Oct 28th I've lost 5 lbs that I'm almost pretty sure is fat not muscle. I've gone down a pant size and am stronger. Some days I have a good deficit some days I have a surplus ( weekends are bad for me) Besides lifting as heavy as I can I also do a step aerobic class 2 days a week and do some interval on treadmill ( not HIIT just walk 4mph then run 8.3 for 20 seconds then walk) My heart rate has gotten as high as 170 doing lifting, while the highest I can do while doing interval and cardio class is about 147. I burn about 3 more calories per minute while weight lifting than cardio. (this may not seem like much but I'm gonna be 50 on monday) I think weight lifting with a deficit or a surplus is the greatest workout for whatever you want to do - lose weight, gain muscle maintain muscle or just overall improved health. I know since doing the NROL4W and now the NROL I've improved my health and fitness by leaps and bounds |

| Fitness | HR and Heart murmur | Nov 12 2009 12:52 (UTC) |
|
If its a heart murmur like 20% of the population has and doesn't even know they have it wouldn't effect it one bit. I have a heart murmur too - was diagnosed in high schol never caused me a bit of trouble I just have to take antibiotics before dentist appts and had to have shots of something after giving birth. A speedy recovery rate after pushing yourself is a sign of a healthy heart. Unless a dr has said to be careful with cardio workouts I personally wouldn't worry about it and it has no effect on the calorie burn.

Love -- dumbell shoulder presses. I just love seeing those muscles bigger than most the mens in the gym LOL Hate -- lunges or step ups oh or those romanian squats or whatever they are called where one foot is on a bench and you squat OMG the Pain!!! Since doing NROL fat Loss III I'm loving the workouts for how they've managed to kick me off the plataue I'd been on forever and make me "feel the burn" so muich. Best workout I've done so far in both New Rules books. |

| Fitness | F11 battery troubles | Nov 07 2009 04:03 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by bmx419: I know bmx - but I just know whenever my HRM stops working I just "reset" it by taking the battery out and it works fine for a few more months. Its not putting a whole new battery but I think to reset the watch you have to remove the battery itself as it doesn't have a turn off button. I rarely got a blank screen though - mine would just freeze up with the display not moving. If the battery isn't completely "settled" and in contact with the thingy it wont work. I don't know what else to recommend doing. Bummer about having 3 in such a short time. Mine is so old 4 years this Christmas and its still working and I use it every day. |

Actually I've had my polar F11 for years and this used to drive me bonkers, I'd change the battery and they would test it and say its fine. Once I didn't have a replacement so I just took the old battery out and put it back in and it resets and worked fine - Don't replace the batter, just take it out and put it back in and see if that doesn't do the trick. The last time I did this my battery lasted another 6 months with no troubles, before I was experiencing what you did. Also don't send it back to replace just take it to a jewler if you can't unscrew the little screws and put them back in yourself. I have to use a magnifiying glass sometimes to get them little screws back in but don't waste the money on changing the battery.

| Fitness | Cardio vs. Weights | Nov 05 2009 02:46 (UTC) |

I for one can burn 2 times the calories lifting than I do in an hour long cardio. I am currently doing NROL fat loss III and its a killer. 4 weight lifting sets of 10 - 12 no rest then one minute rest and repeat. My heart rate has gotten as high as 168 - not bad for a 50 year old woman IMHO. I can't run or jump rope or bike ride fast enough to get my heart rate up that high doing strictly cardio. Weights is the best cardio- but you need to be sure you are lifting to your maximum not just doing curls and kickbacks. I do my weight routine and then about 15 minutes on the treadmill doing a bit of interval and cooling down. When I do my step aerobic class on my non lifting days my heart rate gets to about 145 for a bit but I can't keep it up there for long. I also can only burn about 350 cals in the class vs tonights weight lifting burn of 650 in 50 minutes.

| Weight Loss | Losing Inches But Not Pounds | Oct 31 2009 15:08 (UTC) |

I would kill to lose 18 lbs in that short of time - and all those inches!!!! I too agree with others who said who cares what the scale says - I'd much rather "look" thinner than go by the number on the scale In fact I've lived this I currently am at 180 many years ago when I was 180 I was wearing size 16s I now wear 10 -12s depending on the maker -- Sure I'd love to see 155 on the scale again but even then I was only wearing size 8s so adding 25 lbs over the last few years I've also only gained a couple pant sizes. I think weight lifting is the best inch reducer ever. I will say - go to free weights vs the machines. Ask your Personal trainer to show you how to do deadlifts, squats and such and see how much faster and better you'll be |

I remember reading something in the New Rules Of Lifting book about this but my book is in the locker at the gym , but if I recall correctly there are certain lifts that are good for certain sports while others not so good. I would 2nd the person above saying to contact your coach - |

| Fitness | Lifting with a deficit | Oct 24 2009 16:45 (UTC) |

Lifting with a deficit will help make your body shape up quicker- yes you may lose some muscle mass, but I think its minimal compared to the amount of fat that gets lost. Also your muslces will be stronger and will look better and once the fat is gone you'll have a great body to show off |

| Fitness | Muscle soreness/ DOMS... How I hate thee. | Oct 24 2009 16:39 (UTC) |

Oh I feel your pain LOL -- actually I love "feeling the burn" the 24 and usually 48 hours after a good lifting workout. My coworkers laugh at my hobbling all the time. I do find the best thing is ice packs to the worst pains. Always take a rest day from weights and only lift every other day and also when I work out even if still suffering from the DOMS it makes it feel better. As far as the advice to lift light and multiple reps all that will do is build stamina and nothing for muscle. Usually when I first start a new workout I'll get the DOMS, but after the first 2 workouts its diminished enough I can continue to progress. I don't stretch before - only afterwards and as far as walking/ running jogging to prevent it that doesn't always work either in my experience. I do my lifting routine then 15 - 20 minutes of interval training afterwards and if I upped my squat or deadlift weights I'll still feel it the next day or day after that.

| Fitness | Trainer sais I don't need cardio with my circuit training.... | Oct 23 2009 04:46 (UTC) |

I know for me my heart rate gets sky high quickly on my heavy lifts. It takes a lot of work for me to get my heart rate with 10 bpm on any piece of cardio equipment in fact.. So to add to what already has been said Weight lifting is cardio and IMHO a much better way to burn the calories and reshape the figure |

OOPs -- just noticed the Original poster is male - but men get osteoporosis too-- Also you would probably just want to go right into New Rules of Lifting. Its a great book for beginners needing a weight lifting program and all the workouts to build strenth muscle or fat loss are all spelled out
Also check out Tnation's "Really Fast Fat Loss" workout program. I know lots of people who had success with that program as well. I think the key to all these fat loss workouts has been the HIIT and interval training. Plus you can do 20 minutes of HIIT and burn the calories of a 1 hour regular workout. When I do weight lifting and interval training I'll burn about 250 - 400 more calories in the hour than I do during step aerobic class. |

| Fitness | lifting vs cardio? | Oct 21 2009 04:14 (UTC) |

I did the New Rules of Lifting for women and it incorporates interval training during stages 2 and 5 but I would also do a step aerobic class on my non lifting days. I am now doing the New Rules Of Lifting Fat loss II and its kicking my booty. My heart rate monitor is registering 173 on some of the lifts - understand I'm soon to be 50 so this is pretty intense cardio workout. I can't run fast enough or pedal hard enough to get my heart rate that high doing cardio machines. So don't think for a second that weight lifting can't be a good cardio workout too. If I ate right I know my weight would be less- but even not losing anything on the scales I am losing inches. The last time I weighed this amount I was wearing size 16's I now wear 12s and if it weren't for my thunder thighs I could probably wear 10's 12s are real baggy in my waist There are also so many more advantages to weight lifting for women -- it also helps build bone which wards of osteoporosis.

| Fitness | HRM accuracy | Oct 20 2009 03:42 (UTC) |
1 |
Well it depends on what information the HRM has you plug in Age, Weight sex height are important variables that are necessary to calculate a calorie burn. If it doesn't ask for this information then its not going to be very accurate. MAchines are never even close unless you are male 5'7" and 175lbs as this is the "standard" machines go by if it also is not programmable with your specifics. Also does the HRM have a chest strap so its doing constant monitoring of your heart rate? If its one that you put your finger on every so often then its burn calculations aren't going to be close either. I am 49 5'7" and 181 lbs and I worked out today doing heavy lifting and 15 minutes cardio and burned 550 calories - When I lift my heart rate gets going pretty hard more than walking on the treadmill at 4 mph in fact. If you are just doing light lifting then your pule probably isn't going to do that.

| Fitness | HRM frustration-is that me, my big boobs or am I just cursed? | Oct 17 2009 18:09 (UTC) |

I've had my polar f11 for 4 years now and had more problems when I used the encoded strap vs jsut the cheap one that came with my basic polar model- in fact I quit using the encoded one years ago and just use the cheapo one. Also if you wear an underwire bra - that will interfere with the reading / communicating between the watch / strap. I also found when I walked in a certain area in my neighborhood my hrm would crap out because someone nearby had a ham radio antenna that I think interferred with the connectivity sometimes just taking the battery out and putting it back in helps -- you don't have to change the battery and I have no idea why just taking it out an dputting it in again does but everytime mine acts up with registerinng zeros to registering 199 it works. I 'd stick with the polars Oh also you don't "soak" the monitoring area just dampen it. I just spit on it-- or drop a couple drops of water on it. Also don't use detergents to wash it just rinse it. |

| The Lounge | Judge denies marriage license to inter-racial couple | Oct 17 2009 04:01 (UTC) |

http://www.tv3winchester.com/home/headlines/6 4001682.html Two ministers at a Norfolk Unitarian Church will protest Virginia's constitutional ban on gay marriage by refusing to sign marriage licenses for heterosexual couples. The Revs. Phyllis L. Hubbell and John P. Manwell said they will continue to officiate at wedding ceremonies, but will not sign marriage licenses. In Virginia, only heterosexual couples can get a marriage license validating their legal status as spouses. The couple said the protest is worth the inconvenience for heterosexuals they wed. Hubbell and Manwell contend that by signing marriage licenses for heterosexual couples, they are abetting anti-gay bias. The Unitarian Universalist Association is one of the few denominations that support gay marriage and offer civil union ceremonies for same-sex couples. |

If the HRM doesn't have a strap to do constant monitoring of your heart rate then it isn't going to be very accurate at all. Also the VO2 is a very important factor in determining calorie burn. I have a polar F11 and when my VO2 is elite it gives me a big calorie burn I reset it to "good" so my calorie burn won't be so high |

| Fitness | NROLFW - the one-star review | Oct 12 2009 14:09 (UTC) |

Original Post by littlesimongeorge: The NROL has the bars with a lot bigger weights than I can do!! You know thinking about it in the NROL4W they do sometimes say "start with light weights" like the YWTL and some others. Also both books say lift as heavy as you can to complete the sets. I have real problems with this cause even though I've done NROL4W I still can't lift as heavy as others and doing the static lunge with the barbell on shoulder @ 45 lbs I can only do about 4 with good form then I'm done in. |

I don't know what book that person was reading but NROL4W has the workouts and pages the exercises can be found so you do them right are all set up for you. All you have to decide is what weight to lift.
I liked the set up of the routines so much and the explanation of exercises that I am now doing New Rules of Lifting. I've heard Starting Strength is very good too. Oh and the NROL and one for women do have logs available for downloading online.
The NROL has nutrition "touched" on but not really delved into deeply - just the stuff we all know eat clean etc... I liked the NROLFW and I like NROL because the routines are spelled out for me in black and white. EAch day I know what I need to do and how to do it. Also the NROL is a whole years worth or workouts if done 3 times a week |
