My mind is always the first thing to give out on me, I've been told to concentrate on my breathing, find a mantra, get lost in the music and for the most part these things all work for me, but the thing that works the best is my "imaginary" compitition with my sister in law (who happens to be one of my best friends)! We started the C25K program together, she kept at it and I let my mind get in the way. she beat me across the finish line of our first 5K by 4 minutes. Now everytime I think I need to walk or I just can't go another step, I think I don't really mind her beating me if she's really better at it, but if she's beating me because I've given up....well then I've beaten myself and that just stinks and thats enough to keep me running!!

I love my bike. Sometimes if I haven't rode it in a while I forget just how much I like. I rode about 6 miles on Sat and thought to my self....."why don't you do this more often?" I have gone off the deep end and bought just about everything and the one thing that never disappoints me is my bike.

Weight Loss Starvation Mode Rant Apr 08 2008

Wow pretty interesting debate! I can't honestly say I've given the topic any real thought, until today. I don't think the OP was trying to spark it, just stating that perhapse it's over used as a reason for trouble losing weight at times. I have trouble losing weight and it has nothing to do with an ED or starvation mode...I'm just plain lazy and don't get enough constistant exercise. Undecided sometimes I eat way to few calories sometimes way to many, my life is busy and gets away with me and sometimes I fail to pay attention.

Everybody is different and what works for one may back fire on another. I just don't see one cut and dry answer.  I do however appreciate getting several opinions when I have a question, some advice I take some I don't, so I hope that even though the opinions on this subject differ so greatly, everyone keeps putting their 2 cents in.....but maybe with out the nastiness that some show. Everyone here is here for a certain goal weather you agree with them or not, the debate should remain friendly.

Just my 2 cents Cool

Muscle is heavier then fat, so you might not notice it in the scale. you should however begin to notice it in the way your close look...or those stricking new biceps Wink. I was an absolute scale obsessive. I got on every day but was also told thats a no no instead take measurements as you gain muscle you'll lose fat and get that lean sculpted, healthy body. For me it's baby steps but i am starting to notice a difference even my moods are better!!

So I wouldn't stop the weights for fear of the scale, I'd keep it going for the fabulous results you'll get!

I don't really have an answer, but maybe this will help alittle

I was just told a couple of weeks ago by a trainer that to lose weight, aside from the calories deficit, I need to have strength training. Cardio is great but it's the muscle that burns calories even while your doing nothing. So she has me doing strength training 3 days a week, after that I do some cardio or I do it on the days I'm not using weights. I gained 4 lbs and about had a stroke BUT she also told me that was to be expected the first couple of weeks for a couple or reasons one of course muscle weighs more then fat, but also as the muscles break down and rebuild they require alot of water (which until 2 weeks ago I didn't drink alot of). She has me eating 1350 calories a day and for me thats ALOT but my body is starting to adjust and although I haven't dropped any lbs, I did just notice that I was able to put my jeans on with out sucking in my belly and doing an indian rain dance to zip them.

If you were maintaining at 1700 then maybe try lowing them a little? or instead of an hour doing cardio try to break it up and add weights? but again I really don't know I just want to share what my trainer has told me and it seems to be working..

as a side note oddly enough when I pluged in my info here to see what my calorie intake should be it matched just about perfect to what my trainer told me.
Weight Loss Oprah & Dr. Oz Feb 19 2007

I just got the book today, so I was pretty interested when I saw this post. For me it's not about any "new revelation" but a reinforcement. I watched a show he had on discovery channel and in it was a family (Daughter and Father) that Dr Oz took  to the hospital to show them what poor eating can do to your insides. Well I was shocked...he took things like an enlarged heart from years of being obese and a healthy heart and held them side by side, the sick heart was full of fat and HUGE. He showed a few other things that had me glued. I found that to be such an enlightenment I didn't think I could go wrong with the book. He doesn't just say eat healthy and exercise more, he explains in detail what happens to your body when you don't, how yor body processes things etc. It is very interesting and for me a pretty good motivator. I know that I'm suppose to eat right and exercise, what I didn't quit get was just exactly how years of poor nutrition can effect every part of you. Sounds simple enough but some of us need a bit more reinforcement.

Motivation Do you ever feel like it's impossible for you to be thin? Feb 18 2007

Yeah...I feel that way sometimes too, and I use to be really thin. A long long time ago I was 100 lbs I'm 5'3". It's a thin line (no pun intended) between being thin and being healthy. I look at pics of myself back then and wonder what I was thinking I looked sick. On the other hand, I am now 140 and don't really care what the scale says anymore, I just want to be at a healthy weight with muscle tone and definition. I want to be able to run a mile without feeling like I'm going to die. Some days I look in the mirror and think I look sooo big and others I think lookin good mama!

It's all a mental game for me and I know it, some days I win some days I don't. Sometimes I am positive I will never reach my goal size. Sometimes I am positive I will. I don't think genetics have anything to do with it, unless you have an image in your head that isn't realistic. I do think metabolism has alot to do with it, but you can change your metabolism around. I've been on hypothyroid meds for over 20 years, the thyroid is not why I put on weight and it's not the reason I have a hard time taking it off. My weight problems are because I don't eat right or exercise enough....well I use to not eat right and exercise enough now I'm all about it, and it's working. You'll get there if you persevere!!

Manda....spinning is a stationary bike with a tension handle on it. You take it as a class it's a great work out. I do it at the YMCA and each instructor is different. they tell you when to increase or decrease the resistance how fast or slow to go when to recover. It's really fun, the first time I did it I was a little sick to my stomach, but my friend and warned me about this and told me that when/if I got to that point just back of the tension and go into recovery for a few minutes. You can burn over 600 calories in and hour long session.
Weight Loss Why are we afraid to loose weight? Feb 17 2007

Thats definatly a question that is different for everybody. I read this post this morning and have been thinking about it all day, "what is my trigger, what causes me to sabatoge myself" I really don't know. I start to lose my momentum and then just quit, I came so close to giving up this past week, but I dug deep and just made myself go to the gym. I didn't get as many days in as I should have, but I didn't give up either that is really a first for me.

I know that I eat when I am bored or lonely. but my biggest problem is eating to much at one time and not spreading my claories out during the day. Sometimes I get so worried about that I cut my calories down to nothing, which makes me tired and lethrgic and I don't feel like exercising...that starts a trend...I don't feel like exercising so I stay home and eat, that makes me feel guilty so I reduce my calories, then I feel like crap with no energy so I stay home and eat...etc.

It's all mental for me, it's been my way of life for as long as I can remember I just never had to worry about the wieght until 2 years ago and now I just have to find a way to relearn good eating skills and make myself go to the gym.

I know this probably didn't help you at all, but your thread really helped me. Thank you.

I tell everyone, Sometimes I think I should just keep my mouth shut, but the truth is it keeps me accountable for the most part. I fall off that wagon so many times I should have broken bones by now, but my friends are all supportive of what ever crazy thing I get into. I have 1 or 2 people who will start with the "you don't need to lose weight" and I always say "sure I do and those jeans in  my closet I wore 2 years ago that I can't get over my big toe now are proof" it usually shuts them up. I hang with a group of very supportive, fun loving,  happy go lucky people. It's important to me to be surounded by positive people who for the most part don't sugar coat things but don't crawl up in to my business.  I don't worry about the nay sayers and I love the advice, so many different people have so many different ideas about losing weight, being healthy and exercise. Some of it of course is off the wall but other times I hear things I hadn't heard before that think it's worth a shot. that is how I got into pilates and spinning both of which I wouldn't have tried if some one hadn't been giving me advice.

Tomorrow is another day!! I can totally understand how you feel, I do this to myself all to often. learning to change bad eating habits and replace them with good ones is a process. I had a stressful week and ate horrible all week. I'm kicking myself now, but the only thing to do is strengthen my resolve and climb back on that wagon. I don't know how much damage it did or didn't do all I can say is that when you start fresh tomorrow it will be a little bit easier. I wouldnt drink laxative tea it won't help and you will probably end up feeling worse. Just remember your not alone, there are alot of people, including myself, on this board that has done the same thing....pick your chin up and know your worth having a healthy new life style and of course tomorrow is a brand new day!!
Weight Loss Fondues? Feb 14 2007
19:44 (UTC)
We did fondue this past weekend, my girl friend is the very best at it. We used paenut oil. We had Chicken, catfish fillets, steak, mushrooms and oinions with a tempura batter. WE also did the cheese, we used swiss knight with a bit of white wine, garlic and nutmeg. With the cheese we had apples, celery, carrots, bread and brocolli. We didn't go totally healthy, but it was pretty close and it was great. Of course my friend and her husband did all the work, maybe thats why it was so good LOL

Sounds like a  wonderful valentines day night!!

I don't lift weights either, not because I bulk so much I just really don't like it, so I never stick to it. I do pilates 2-3 times a week and it has been making a terrific difference for me. I still have fat on my legs, but not as much and they are rock hard. I am finally starting to see definition in my arms that I have never seen before.

The only thing in the entire article that caught my eye was

"to use along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and exercise."

Seems pretty obvious...more calories out then in...just as this website has been saying since the begining. losing weight isn't easy and no pill is going to magically cause you to lose, you have to put forth the effort.

My theory is that I am the one that put all that crap in my mouth and sat my lazy butt in front of the TV as the pounds crept up, It's up to me to watch what I eat and exercise. I didn't need a pill to pile on the pounds I shouldn't need one to take them off.

But I just tell myself it is because I am working so hard, and nobody can question that or assume I'm not pushing myself :)

I am certainly no expert on this subject, but I would think that your at a good weight. I am 5'3" and I think that 125 in my perfect weight, so I would be inclined to say that 135 is good for your height. I really don't know that, although I am sure someone here will have a better answer for you.

Could it be that you just need to tone the muscle on your legs? do you do any weight training?
