Thanks everyone! I really cannot thank you enough for all of your kind posts, and you have NO idea how much truly better I feel. It suddenly dawned on me that, "There is no later, only now!" so I'm going to do my best to head into the future with that new attitude in mind. Thank you all so much !!!

@ruthie2442, I know what you're saying, but I also failed and dropped out of school and don't have a job, so.. thinking about other people's possible misfortunes doesn't really make me feel any better...

cptbunny, I haven't tried any recipes from Cook Yourself Thin but I did watch a few of their episodes - and it was ALL natural, fresh foods, they just tweaked the recipes a bit to make them healthier and lower cal (like using less cheese and so on.) I would try one of their recipes any day, as an added bonus I already have all of that stuff in my pantry and it doesn't cost a fortune, lol.

I also feel like she uses too much artificial stuff in her recipes... whenever I find something I'd like to try I'm like, "Really? People actually cook like this?" I'd rather have something with a higher calorie count that isn't so mysterious to be honest. I do like her recommendations for products, though.

Sake is of Japanese origin, not Chinese. It also correctly pronounced sah-kay, NOT sah-key.

Having said that, I've never been to a liquor store! but know that you can find it at Asian groceries and sometimes larger supermarkets in the alcohol section.

I find it hard to believe that you are a size 10 at 5'8 and 115 lbs; I am 5'8 and a size 10 myself at around 155 lbs. Perhaps you meant to type a size 1 or 0...

You are underweight. The minimum safe weight for your height is 125 lbs. If you are still unhappy with the way you look at 10 pounds underweight, you may need to consider that you do have some form of an eating disorder.

Weight Loss How to count if you don't eat all of the food on your plate ... ? May 12 2009

Thanks everyone, I thought about the scale method but find it to be a bit of a hassle to have to weigh my food twice, so I guess I'll just stick with singing_girl's method and estimate :)

I was kind of worried of using gijane's approach because I don't want to force myself to eat everything on my plate if I'm not hungry, and even serving less of course my hunger will vary from day to day :) Thanks everyone !

Weight Loss Weigh or Measure??? Apr 22 2009

I weigh myself usually once a week.. if you weigh yourself multiple times a day, or even once a day, your weight fluctuates too much from water, wastes, etc so you won't get a good average unless you do it less frequently. Or continue doing it frequently and work out the average math on paper :P

I also take my inches once a week, though from my experience my inches depend more on if I have worked out that week or not :o)

5'11 and 128 pounds is underweight. You should not be trying to lose weight.

You are probably having such a difficult time losing weight because you are aiming for a dangerous, unhealthy weight.

The absolute minimum you should weigh is 133 for your height.

I guess it would, but you'd have to add up how much you put ... I say you should definitely count the calories though, I only put 2 tbsp of skim milk in my coffee but I still count them because not counting those things can really add up ... ! (For example, not counting the butter/oil you cooked your eggs in and so on)

Health & Support What can I do to stop "emotional binging?" Apr 01 2009

Thank you all so much for your encouraging replies! I feel a lot better armed to deal with the situation the next time it happens to come up now. I particularly like naruelle's idea of playing video games more often, as it does keep me busy enough that I usually can't eat without taking a break and requires both hands.

My next concern is what I can do to prevent it from happening at work - I work in a bakery and today when I found out that my usual coworker is going to be gone for six weeks and possibly forever and that I'll most likely get stuck working with someone I despise I ate an entire sample tray of banana nut cake -_-;; Any suggestions for dealing with the situation at work?

According to BMI,  6'3 and 160 lbs gives a BMI of 20 which is on the low end but perfectly healthy and not underweight.

You probably need to give your body more time to adjust to eating 2100/day - it may be that you will maintain for a week or two and then once your body realizes that you are eating less you will shed a few pounds rather quickly. (It's a fairly common occurence.)

As for your eating habits, the only way to prevent yourself from overeating at one meal like that is to plan ahead - make a list of healthy meals you enjoy and add up their calories, or if you're going to be about, try and think of healthier options that you enjoy. Just as long as you have something in mind it will help you to make better decisions, some people go as far as to plan their meals for the week and eat exactly what they have planned which may help you, but you may find it more of a bother. It takes a bit of trial and error to find what works for you, but try not to get too discouraged and I'm sure you'll find it :)

You may also be eating too much or too little - if you are very active you should up your calories, and if you are very inactive you may want to lower your calories. Someone else can probably help you out more with the math on this. Also, the reason you are losing 2lbs/wk barely eating anything is because your body is eating your muscle tissue for fuel, which is a bad thing - you want the muscle to keep your metabolism up so you can lose better and eat more!

runningbuns I used to go out for a walk or a drive, but ended up with the problem of either being out alone at midnight (!) or in my car at midnight and somehow always end up getting questioned by police as to why I'm out so late... unfortunately I can't choose what time an argument will start :(

pgeorgian Thanks for letting me know that I'm not alone; I also greatly appreciate the advice of just accepting that emotion for a while instead of trying to eat it away. I hate to say it, but saying that I have no close friends was my way of saying I have no friends :\ my only friend had to move away to another state and I'm not really the social type so I'm kind of stuck there

esherman68 I love the first&third suggestion so I'll get right on that list and post a note on my wall about the letter. I sometimes write in my journal when I'm upset but then I developed this other problem of feeling guilty when I journal, so I'll have to rethink that. I do love the second suggestion but I'm not sure how well it will work out as my bf and I live together and he is quite underweight so we always have things like ice cream around for his shakes and whatnot.. *sigh*

Weight Loss What should I eat more or less in Asian Cuisine? Mar 22 2009

The sugars in fruits will not make you gain weight, eating too many calories overall will make you gain weight. Since fruits are generally low in calories you would have to eat A LOT of them to make you gain weight, although they have sugar, it is natural sugar that is better for your body than the sugars found in junk foods. Eating fruit is very good and healthy because it is low in calories and high in fiber which will keep you full :) Just make sure not to eat 2,000 calories in fruits!

I think that white fish is relatively low in calories, oily fish like salmon has more calories, but again those calories are healthier for you than eating the calories from unhealthy red meat. I think that the serving size of fish is also bigger than what a serving size of red meat would be, so you can have a bigger piece of fish for less calories. :)

Foods starbucks vs. jamba juice breakfast...cheap and healthy? Mar 21 2009

I'm pretty sure my homemade breakfasts of 2 eggs, a slice of toast with some jam and some orange juice runs me around something like 99 cents, but as for eating out I think that Starbucks breakfast has generally better choices as they have the breakfast sandwiches for protein and whatnot. Or at least at the Jamba Juice near me they only ever have muffins and pretzels which have NEVER looked appetizing to me, and I am the kind of person who cannot ever go into starbucks without also buying one of their sweets...

Oh and as for Jamba Juice smoothies, you seriously have to look up the nutritional info of EVERY DRINK to see what it has in it. Some have sherberts, some don't, some are all fruit, some are not, and so on... but I will say that a Razzmatazz is my personal favorite, although I know it is made with the unhealthy sherbert ;)

After reading your profile, I just thought I should tell you that since you are already at a healthy weight, losing even more weight will most likely not change the shape of your hips. Your body type simply holds the kind of proportions in which you have bigger hips, and it is impossible to change because that is the structure of your skeleton, which we cannot change.

If you mean to say that your hip area is a little more "flabby" than you would like it to be, that you feel as though you have fat in that area, the best thing for you to do is strength training exercises that target that area so that you can build muscle. Once you build muscle there the area will look leaner and thinner and you will lose inches that will help get you into smaller sizes a lot easier than if you just diet in the hopes that they will get smaller, because we  also cannot choose where our body decides to lose fat.

MAYO. My #1! I simply cannot understand it !Also anything containing mayo, such as creamy dressings like ranch or special sauce or any dips. I don't care for mustard either but I'd take it over mayo any day.

All sliced lunchmeats, so that equals all sorts of deli sandwiches as well.

Most raw vegetables. Maybe because I don't like dip ... ? I like barely-cooked vegetables, but definitely not raw ones.

Also watermelon, but I'm beginning to think I may never have had a perfectly ripe one and definitely want to try it again sometime soon.

I love my electric water kettle - I HATE waiting for a big pot of water to boil (for pasta, vegetables, etc) and it speeds things up immensely (+ makes all of dinner go by A LOT faster.) I also prefer it to microwaving my vegetables in plastic or covered with plastic wrap, but out of sheer convenience a microwave might be the better choice. Oh I forgot to add my second favorite appliance is my rice cooker, because I hate attending rice on the stove and always burn it ! (:

Weight Gain Help with underweight boyfriend? Mar 11 2009
22:37 (UTC)

@lalabanana, my apologies! It wasn't until after I posted my above response that I realized how long it was and that it would have been more appropriate for it's own thread. I cannot thank you enough for all of your wonderful advice and those easily high calorie recipes... I think I tend to be drawn towards lower-calorie recipes due to my own needs, so I will have to work on that. Thank you SO MUCH for all of your advice. After talking to him about all the soda he has decided to start drinking milk again so I am very thrilled about that :)) As for the fiber, the problem is that it makes him feel too full to eat anymore, as do other foods like soup. Even if he hasn't eaten many calories, he says it makes his stomach hurt to eat more if he feels full, so he stops, so I thought that reducing fiber/volume might help. Though I guess from your response it's better to reduce volume than fiber :))

@plingu, I'd love to start a group! I'll go ahead and make a thread in a general forum to see if we'd have enough members to start one up. Unfortunately my bf has always been thin and very self-conscious about it, to the point that he would not wear anything but long-sleeved dress shirts and pants for a few years. Sadly it seems he was teased quite a bit as a child about his weight, and though I'm happy he's a lot less self-conscious about it now, I do still worry for his health. I think the one thing that he's suffered from (and is also quite aware of it) is acne, so I think that encouraging him to eat healthier for better skin will be a huge incentive for him. And I'd definitely love to be friends with you ^^

Weight Gain Help with underweight boyfriend? Mar 11 2009

@plingu, Hi plingu, I just wanted to let you know that I know how you feel. My boyfriend is only 6'1 to yours but weighs closer to 110lbs most of the time, putting his BMI somewhere around 14-15 I think. The thing is, he is well aware of this and has been unhappy about it for most of his life, but he seems to struggle in making a commitment to gaining although he seems to be considering it more seriously again, leading me to read up on these weight gain forums. Of course I was on the opposite end of the spectrum and overweight for a while, no longer overweight but still trying to lose a little so I know how extremely frustrating it can be to be in your situation.I wonder if there are enough of us out there to make some sort of group for couples in which they are facing the lose weight/gain weight challenge :)?

@lalabanana, I was hoping you could give me some advice about my dear bf! (6'1, 110lbs, 20yrs) He is quite sedentary, sitting at his desk most of the time and the other part of the time he is at school (and sitting.) However, having counted his calories before he does take in a good 3,000 calories (what I saw you recommend on another thread) on average, but a lot of these calories seem to come from SODA. However, if a calorie is a calorie it seems he shouldn't weigh so little with that many calories right? (He is trying to switch to milk and things as he has some worries about some joint pains.) So I'm not sure what the ideal number of calories would be (I guess 3500 to start?) unless switching out the soda for something else has the potential to make a huge difference.

My next question is, like plingu's boyfriend, he is a slightly picky eater and prefers greasy foods like McDonald's. His reasoning for this is that the high number of calories is easy to fit in, whereas a healthier meal with the same number of calories is harder to eat because there's more of it and it makes him feel too full. Since you recommended (in another thread) 1/2 plate carbs, 1/4 protein, and 1/4 fruit/vegetable, are there any very high calorie, low fiber carbs that you might recommend? I might add that he despises pasta. He has no problem eating tons of proteins but carbs make him feel too full so he can't eat as many of them, which is leading me to wonder if he's inadvertently so thin because he's on a sort of low-carb diet without even realizing it, so out of curiousity, is that at all possible?

Phew. Okay. Lastly, he's been tested for thyroid problems and such that could be the cause of his very low weight, but nothing has turned up. As he doesn't seem to have any signs of an eating disorder and his doctor didn't encourage him to gain/seem overly concerned about his weight, is it possible that he is perfectly healthy at this weight and there is no need for him to gain, even though his BMI is so low? I should probably add that his entire family is also very thin, including his younger brother who is near the same size as him.

I sincerely appreciate your time in reading this :)

When I was at the Borders cafe last weekend, as our drinks were called my bf got up to go get the drinks as he always does, but started to walk past our table on his way back. Later on he told me that he thought I was a different person because I looked too thin to be me ! He was hesitant to tell me because he thought it could have been taken as an insult but I am just going to take it as a compliment ;)

Motivation Gained 1/2 lb somehow, feeling discouraged... Mar 05 2009

Thanks for all your replies; I've never actually assigned myself a "range" of weight but I did as one poster recommended and weighed myself in the morning and again at night, I seem to have a range of about 3 lbs that I fluctuate between so I'm going to stick with that.

But now my question is: how do I know when I have truly lost weight? Should I just add 3lbs to my weight every week and use that number instead of the actual number I see on the scale? Thanks!
