| Health & Support | Scared About General Anaesthetic for Gall Bladder Removal | Oct 11 2009 19:45 (UTC) |
|
I've been put under general anesthesia a million and a half times. ;-) It's perfectly safe. One second you're talking with your doctor, and the next you're out like a light. You know that stuff that was a huge controversy with Michael Jackson, because he used it to fall asleep every night? That's propofal (sp?) and it's the best stuff in the world. Make sure your anesthesiologist uses that... you'll wake up fairly easily, with minimal to no nausea. Good luck with your surgery! |

Edamame! Soooo yummy and so easy. I love to get the frozen bags, either shelled or unshelled, micro 'em and toss on a little salt. Can't get much easier, or yummier than that. ;-) |

Wow I really appreciate all the responses, guys, and I really appreciate everyone's strong feelings on the subject. I guess to clear things up, one of the reasons I'm so torn on the subject is because I grew up watching my dad in a career that he hated. At 50 years old he went back to school to pursue a career that he loved, and he's kind of my hero for that. I feel like I owe it to him, and myself, to get it right the first time. I love that you guys think its doable to do both, because honestly that would be my dream. I'm still very much in love with history, which is why this decision was weighing on me so heavily. Pursue something I love or... pursue something I love? Thank you guys again for all the input. I'm currently applying for an entry-level position at a bakery in my area... hopefully a little bit of hands-on experience will help me make my decision. (Hopefully I'll get the job!) |

| Foods | Does it matter if I take my calcium and iron supplements at the same time? | Jul 30 2009 00:17 (UTC) |
1 |
I know that Calcium can inhibit the absorption of Magnesium, so it's very possible that it can also effect Iron absorption. If you're worried you're not getting enough Iron, take the pills about four hours apart. If you don't think you'll remember, either get in the habit of taking some in the morning and some at night, or set an alarm for yourself. You'd be surprised how easy it can be to form a new habit like this. ;-) Also... how do you know you're "short?" Iron is found in a lot of veggies... especially green, leafy vegetables. Try adding some salads, spinach, or brocolli to your diet. |

I'm 5'2", 22 years old, and about 120 pounds right now. My goal weight is 100 pounds... which is really, really difficult, considering I'm barely allowed to get off my butt due to surgery. I can't wait until I can start dancing and running again! |

jaguars1- I'm recovering from hip surgery, as well. Mind if I ask what your's was for? I wasn't stuck in the house, per say, but I could do so little that most of the time I didn't want to move from my bed, anyway. I think it's so much easier to eat healthy, and generally be healthy, when you're able to do everything you can to be healthy. I don't like half-assing it. |

| Health & Support | Prednisone---the diet ender | Jul 16 2009 19:17 (UTC) |

Prednisone can cause cravings and a "hungry" feeling, even when you've already eaten enough food. I was on 120 mg of Prednisone for a bone marrow transplant, and blew up from around 83 lb. pre-transplant, to 180 pounds post-trasplant. I'm a pretty extreme case, however, because I did absolutely nothing to try and curb my appetite. I ate whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it, including high-calorie drinks. 120 mg is a really high dose, as well. Also, as soon as I stopped eating like a pig, I didn't lose weight, but I stopped gaining, too. It's going to be all about eating well, like I'm sure you normally do. Also, keep in mind that Prednisone majorly makes you retain water. I guarantee you that, as soon as you stop taking it, a bunch of water weight will come off. And one more thing to keep in mind-- Prednisone is an immune-suppressent medication. If you're on a high dose be extra careful about cleanliness, because it will be easier for you to get sick. Deborah-- I'm very sorry to hear about your condition. It really is possible to stop gaining weight on high doses of Prednisone. Give yourself a break. You've obviously gone through something traumatic, and I'm sure that you'll get the hang of it. How long ago was your transplant? Do you have a support group that you can go to? I've been through 2 bone marrow transplants so, while not the same thing, if you ever want to talk about it, feel free to message me! |

Honestly, I wish you luck, because I have a similar problem. My roommate that does not have good control at all, but she does continually bring home junkfood, and encourages my baking which, I have to say, is really freaking delicious. I try and encourage her to not do these things, because she also wants to lose weight. I am also the complete opposite of puh8, in that I am absolutely an all or nothin' kinda gal. Either give me the real thing, or give me a **** carrot stick. You have to find your rhythm, and what gets you motivated to stay healthy. |

I'm sorry you're feeling that way, and I'm sure that everyone goes through that. For me, I didn't get my willpower back until I had gained so much weight that I was disgusted with myself when I looked in the mirror and none of my clothes fit me. And, still, I have bad days when I just say "**** it" and eat whatever I want. I mean, let's face it-- we're emotional beings, and we let our emotion dictate a lot of our actions. Give yourself a break, understand that changing your lifestyle is going to be difficult, and you will be so proud when you do good things for your body because it was difficult. Also, I think watermelon is pretty good for you. I'm willing to bet that your mom was talking about refined sugars. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | Ever have anemia? | Jun 23 2009 06:59 (UTC) |

Honestly, you may just want to start taking a multi-vitamin w/Iron daily. And I think someone above mentioned green, leafy vegetables, which are usually rich in Iron. Depending on how bad your anemia is, you might want to get a doctor's opinion. Are you getting lightheaded? Passing out? If it gets bad enough, you can get shots to boost your red blood count. |

This last Valentine's Day I was asked out by an ex co-worker. I happily accepted, as I'd had a crush on him for a while. The day started off great-- he sent me flowers at work, which were lovely, and I arrived home to get ready with a huge smile on my face. I had told my boss that he had sent them "for the studio" because he'd left on not the greatest note, and no one yet knew that we were seeing each other. I'm home, getting ready, when I get a text message from my boss. "So... who are these flowers from again?" A moment later I get another text message from my date, "Don't tell him anything!" And then a third from my boss that's simply: "OMG!" He couldn't keep a secret, apparently, and my co-workers all found out in a slightly awkward way. Oh, and on our very first date, in an effort to be creative, he read to me from a short story book by Richard Russo, one of my favorite authors. Really cute but... jeez. Kind of boring! By the way... we've almost been dating three months now and I'm pretty sure I'm in love. :-D (And scared ****!) |

| The Lounge | Any ex-sun-lovers out there?? Help with skin repair! | May 09 2009 07:26 (UTC) |

Repairing the damage done to your skin will probably take a nice chunk of time. Moisture, obviously, is going to help you a lot. Aloe vera is great for skin, as is Vitamin E. Cocoa butter is supposed to be soothing, and it you can ever splurge on facials, go for it. Not only will it be really beneficial for your skin, but drill your esthetician for as much advice as you can get. I don't know from experience, but I think that as long as you take precautions from now on (sunscreen, moisture, etc.) you should notice a big difference. Good luck! |

Oh boy do I empathize. Especially since a while ago I was at my goal weight and loved the way I looked for the first time in my life... now I've gained back 20 pounds and I am so aware of all the fat on my body. I wear sweats and dresses as often as I can because I just can't stand the feeling of all that fat hanging over the waistband of my jeans and slacks. Gah, and I feel so freaking jiggly all the time! It does feel awesome to complain about it with other people, though. :-) Really, thank goodness for these forums, or I'd think I was completely alone in the world, sink into a depression, and eat myself sick every night just for the hell of it. (I'm not kidding!) |

| Weight Loss | Stretch Marks!!! Make them go awayyy! | Mar 21 2009 06:39 (UTC) |

All I can tell you is that when I was at my goal weight (it seems so very far away now!) and I was in really good shape, my scars really bothered me, still. I have a nice, long, purple gash on the front of my left leg, a couple of puckered looking spots on my chest, some thin lines on my shoulder from a core decompression, another longer line on my other shoulder from a replacement, and more stretch marks than I can count on my thighs, stomach, back, ass, arms, and even a big one on my shoulder. Here's my long-awaited point: I felt sexy anyway. And not because the scars didn't bother me, but because of what I was, and still am, really and understandably after: I was sought after. Boys flirted with me, my friends were jealous, and people complimented me in a bathing suit. Yes, it's shallow, and there are deeper reasons for why I want to be thin, too, but those don't really help in this post. I just want to tell you that, yes, some people will flinch at the stretch marks. But some people will also call you a b*tch because you're thinner than them, and some people will respect your dedication to taking care of yourself. Good Lord, I hope I didn't sound preachy. Best of luck, and if you find something that works well for you, let us know. :-)

| Foods | what are your worst binge stories? | Mar 09 2009 18:57 (UTC) |
35 |
Ready for a long story? Mine: a gallon of ice cream. Now, I know everyone is thinking "Well, who hasn't done that?" Very recently, my work was incredibly chaotic, with the manager consistently out sick, the owner going mad and compensating by micromanaging the hell out of us, and us minions scrambling along trying to stay sane. It really got to me, so I was pretty much constantly binging for about a week, and then one night I took an Ambien to help me sleep. Well, of course, on the Ambien I was convinced that eating some ice cream would cure all my problems. I ate until the damned carton was empty, and promptly had one of the worst panic attacks of my life. I was shaking uncontrollably, crying, and my mind wouldn't focus on anything. I finally called the ER, who at first wanted me to call an ambulance (um, dude... I'm a poor 22-year-old. I ain't callling an ambulance unless it's life-threatening, thanks!) and then advised me to take some Ativan. I did, the shaking eventually ceased, and I was able to sleep. So, maybe not the worst I've ever done calorie-wise (even though it was a lot...), it was still the worst binging experience of my life. Worst, calorie-wise? A couple of years ago, back in Cali and when I was one of those kids, my friends and I smoked up in my backyard. We ordered Chinese food, and I ate not only a big plateful, but an entire carton of white rice, and then at least 4 or 5 cookies from a specialty bakery. |

Original Post by jellykiss: Oh good lord, yes, to the chocolate covered halvah. I don't even need the chocolate. Just give me a big, fat chunk of halvah and I will be one happy girl. Milkshakes. Mashed potatoes. A good deal of fried foods. I miss a lot, because I do deprive myself, because I'm a failure at portion control. I'm an all or nothing kind of gal, and I can't limit myself to one bite. Because once I've taken the first bite, the next 50 come so easily. |

When my mom and I were driving up from So Cal to Seattle, she really wanted a burger so we stopped at a McDonald's and I got the chicken fingers or whatever they call them... tasted OK, but less than an hour later I was in so much pain I had to curl up in the passenger's side seat and moan pathetically. | |||

It's honestly not the label I'm interested in. I suppose the reason I'm hung up on it, rather than just eating chicken if and when I want it, is because I hate half-a**ing things. I feel like if I do this, I should do it all the way. I guess what it comes down to, is that I'm kind of lazy. :-) Thank you again for the advice! |

| Fitness | What's the connection between exercise and meditation, if any? | Jul 08 2008 08:36 (UTC) |
4 |
| I think it depends on your perception of a "meditative state."
Meditation is only defined as clearing the mind in relation to Eastern religions such as Hinduism or Buddhism. Otherwise another definition, and how I personally view meditation, is contemplation. My mind is just too active to be able to sit down, put on some pretty music, light some candles and try and push all thoughts out of my head. (This scenario comes from watching my mother do this all my life, by the way) When I used to run, however, I found the time and the energy to really think about things. Anything. What else was I going to do? Obviously I'm too ADD to just run and listen to music. Anyway, this is my point: meditation, like anything else with a religious or a spiritual connotation, is incredibly personal to every individual. I can, and often do, meditate while exercising. BTW: Very interesting and thought-provoking topic! Kudos! |

| Recipes | baking survey! | Jul 06 2008 20:26 (UTC) |
22 |
| 1) how often do you bake?: At least once a week.
2) where/from who did you learn to bake?: A little bit of my mom, a little bit from my dad, but mostly experimenting on my own. 3) what was the first thing you ever baked?: Chocolate chip cookies, I'm sure. 4) what was the last thing you baked?: I made rolls last night. Sooo yummy! 5) what's your favorite thing to bake?: I love making pizza dough, because I just adore kneading dough and getting my hands all gross and sticky. :-) 6) what was the worst thing you've ever baked?: I accidentally doubled the butter needed in a cake recipe once... that was pretty nasty. 7) what's your favorite thing to add to baking? (sprinkles, chocolate chips, dried fruit, nuts): Coconut and different "chip" varieties. Peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, mint chocolate chips... it's fun to experiment with basic recipes. 8) does anyone else in your house bake?: Not as often, and they get me to do it for them when they can. :-) 9) have you started trying to bake lighter/healhier since joining cc?: I tried to bake healthier before joining cc, but I've actually been able to do so since I've joined. 10) what's your favorite way to make a recipe lighter/healthier? (adding nuts instead of chocolate chips, making smaller portions, substituting egg whites for whole eggs, etc): Using apple sauce instead of oil and whole wheat flour. I've always been more of a fan of heavy, dense baked goods, so these just work to my advantage! 11) do you/why do you like to bake?: Good question. What's not to love? I take a bunch of random ingredients and turn them into something delicious. It makes me happy, it makes the people eating the stuff happy... I like to make people happy. 12) where do you store baked goods after you've baked them? (container, freezer, etc): Usually a plastic baggy or plastic wrap. Depends on the size and what-not. 13) do others think you bake well?: Never had a complaint. In fact, I'd say I've gotten more, "Would you please make this again I'll give you grocery money!" Tee hee that made me happy. 14) where do you find your recipes? (cc, cookbook, family, own creation): My family and allrecipes.com. 15) what's something you've never baked before, but would like to?: Flourless chocolate cake. I'm absolutely terrified, though. Thanks for the fun survey... really helped me procrastinate! |
