Weight Loss exercise dosnt help?!1 Jun 30 2009

I think diet is critical. Exercise is too but to a lesser extent. For example, I love exercise. LOVE IT. I have gained and lost 50-60lbs at a time and kept it off for several years each time. Right now I'm on the fat end and yet I exercise 4-5 times a week. How is this possible?

Answer: my diet. I eat too much. Way too much. And each time I've had successful weight loss I've combined exercise and diet. The time where I tried it through exercise only is the time I failed. So diet is critical.

Exercise helps me keep on track and feel much better and controls my appetite as well. So it is also important. But for the most part you have to watch what you eat.

I wouldn't get too worked up over one study. You need a body of work to show a probability.

Rubbing alcohol should do the trick. It should break down the glossy components of the Pledge. You might need to buy a few bottles to get the job done though.

Fitness I have Plantar Fasciitis...no gym membership an exercise ideas? Sep 22 2008

I have PF too. I think custom orthotics will cut your recovery time down significantly. My podiatrist didn't tell me to take off quite as long as yours did.

I have a gym membership so I did the recumbent bike and did weight machines that did not require me going up on the balls of my feet.

I did pilates and things like push ups and arm curls and the like. I got quite a workout.

The local rec center or community college may have water aerobics classes, but be aware...there is a lot of pushing up on your feet involved. The water helps mitigate the effects but you still have that motion stretching out that tendon on  your foot.

Ice helps a lot.

good luck.

plantar fascitis hurts doesn't it???

I haven't spent the money for orthotics but I do want to make the investment soon. Can anyone ball park how much this will be?

I get some achiness from an elliptical too. You can't keep your heel on that thing really...even if it is hard. I gave it up for a while and did the recumbent bike. Your feet need time to heal up and it will take a few months with good orthotics but they will heal and then things like the treadmill or calf raises will be doable.

And don't forget genetics. Some women are just genetically lean as far as their ability to grow muscle. I am not. I have huge leg muscles...especially my calves. Just genetics. I like it though. My husband finds my legs very sexy. And they can leg press 260 lbs no problem. :-)

Here is a link that dispels the myth that swimming will not help you lose weight.

I agree...and the problem is there is this study that showed that when comparing running, aerobics and swimming..the swimmers gained weight instead of losing. Well, it was ONE study. It's ridiculous. I was very thin and in the best shape of my life when I was a competitive swimmer. Give me a break. I am very skeptical of just one study. And when you google this online you find the same study information parroted back as if it were exercise gospel. Case closed. Hogwash.

I just started back in the pool again (gosh...it's been a long time) and you can't tell me that burning about 400 calories in the morning and combining that with my afternoon weight lifting session (150 cals) combined with a good diet isn't going to make the scale move.

I understand the anectodal evidence from the lifeguard. I know what he's talking about. But remember it's not hard to eat away any calories you burn in a workout, regardless of what you do. These ladies are doing their water aerobics, burning about 200 calories, and stopping at Starbucks on the way home for a frappucino or whatever and completely negating the calorie defict they are trying to create.

All I'm saying is that if it works for you, do it. Watch your diet as you would with any program. I mean, for years I have been lifting weights and doing cario machines and trying to mix it up but my diet gets me every time.  I am very hungry today (and I was when I worked out). But I got up at 5am swam and didn't get to eat until 8:30am..that might have had something to do with it. Anyway,  your diet will get you no matter what you do for exercise. Period.

Are you breaking much of a sweat on that bike? Or are you just pedaling moderately and slowly that entire time?

In addition to the weights, you should do interval training on the bike. Doing sets of all out sprints and then slower and then fast again. You will increase your calorie burn that way.

I don't know if you are using this site's calorie burning totals for exercise equipment on there but they run pretty darn high. Just make sure you have an accurate count.

I also love how they have Jillian Barberie in a huge baggy dress so you can't really see how "unfat" she really is under there. And you know it was taken right after she had her twins. She still had post pregnancy weight on her...so it makes her look like he had more to lose than she did. A good part of that weight would have come off normally with just every day life for her.

Or the Lipozene ads: "I didn't have to do a thing and the weight came off! I ate what I wanted and the fat just melted away."

Yeah, right. Did I fall off the turnip truck yesterday? If that was true it'd be splashed across every magazine, newspaper and news broadcast in America.

I have had good success with eating a bit more one day and coming back down the next. Shake up your activity routine...your body is probably working efficiently at what you are doing and the weight loss is slowing as a result.
Weight Loss ALWAYS hungry, what do I do? May 16 2008

I'd change your wheat toast to whole wheat. Wheat bread is white bread with food coloring. I'd recommend Brownberry's Double Fiber bread.

Your breakfast is lacking a big protein bang. Might want to add an egg in there or some lowfat cottage cheese (14 grams of protein in 1/2 cup!) Instead of your light and fit yogurt (not filling at all for me!) maybe snack on turkey meat or a mozzarella string cheese stick. Kashi is decent but it has the same amount of protein and fiber as shredded wheat. And about the same amount of sugar too.

I can sympathize with you. I face this same problem too. I find if I eat a big fiber breakfast with protein I'm really good to go.

I think overall you are eating well. I'm not sure what your calorie goal is for the day. Good luck.

I wonder why 5lbs is stressing you out so much? I would KILL to be at your weight right now. And with kids. You should be darn proud of yourself! Way to go!

If you must attain this goal of 115 I would agree with the above advice. Soups, veggies, and lots of protein. Cut out anything but whole carbs. Cut out all hidden sugars.

Also, don't use the scale as a measurement of how many calories you burned. It is swayed by so many things....water retention, when you had your last bowel movement, time of day, time of month, etc.

Weight Loss Losing weight in your 40s - is it really harder? May 06 2008
16:39 (UTC)

It is harder. I used to be able to just hit the gym, eat low fat and I could banish a couple of lbs. a week no problem.

After two kids and a sedentary job and not as much gym access and a husband who loves to eat...well...50lbs creeped on fast. But it's coming off slowly.

I've been doing this consistently for a month and lost 5lbs. It's possible, it's just a longer process.

The key is really consistency. When we were in our 20s and 30s we could eat well and not so well and not pay for it so dearly. We have to be more consistent now than we were then.
Weight Loss 5ft 2in girls--what's your goal weight? May 06 2008

I'm a mother of two and 5'2". My ideal weight would be about 125-130. I have a medium frame but build quite a bit of muscle. I've been as low as 113 and it was not sustainable for me. That was when I was 20 and no kids.  I looked a bit gaunt.

I'm currently 190 and have lost 5lbs since restarting this site in April. So it's coming off slowly, which is the best way. My first goal is to be at 160 and I will be content at 140. I just want to be healthy and fit and eat well. That's a realistic weight I think I can keep and still enjoy food I like.

Vanity sizing for sure.
Weight Loss What's your weight loss success story to date? May 02 2008

56
Start Date: 4/6/2008

Start Weight: 196

Current Weight: 190

# of weeks of healthy lifestyle: 4

# of lbs lost since start: 6

Tip: eat filling high fiber and high protein foods. Eat SLOWLY and chew and savor every bite. Exercise and really sweat...you will feel so much better! Weight train, it builds muscle, which burns more calories while resting. Eat what you like, refer to your calorie count log often to keep on track and don't wig out if you have a bad day here and there. Just start over again immediately (don't wait until the next day. Stop the bleeding now!). Don't let hunger get out of control but don't freak out if you are hungry for a little bit. You won't die of it.

I say keep ASSMAN. I know what it references. You are a Seinfeld fan with a great sense of humor! If I were single, that would perk up my interest immediately!

You look great. I have no problem with the way you look. I would just give yourself time to work through the feelings you have first. Get emotionally ready and keep yourself healthy physically and things will fall into place.

I've been following it and I love it.

This is a behavior modification technique. I am using it and combining it with counting my calories. I pick what works for me. I literally can't eat without doing something else. But what I do instead is chew, chew, chew and focus more on the food than on the TV or the book or whatever. And it's helped. I've left food on my plate!

I've been on this since April 10th and I'm down 3 lbs..about 1.5 lbs per week. He says himself that it works for about 70% of the people who try it and that it doesn't work for everyone because everyone on is different.

His techniques on conquering cravings and his 4 golden rules are very good stuff. Don't knock it until you try it!
Weight Loss any diet pills that work?? Apr 28 2008
20:25 (UTC)
I agree...it's the little things that add up. We think an extra tablespoon here or a extra snack there doesn't add up...it does. I know that's precisely how I gained 50 lbs over the past 7 years. Over 7 years time that amounts to about 68 extra calories a day. That's all it took. You would think I was gorging on gallons of ice cream of shoving fries in my mouth every day. Nope. I mostly eat healthy...brown rice, whole grains, lots of fruit and veggies. I exercised 5 days a week. But I did blow it with the chocolate and eating a lot after dinner instead of a light snack.

I did take Meridia once and lost about 20lbs on that and stalled. I think it was a good medication but just know it's not a miracle cure. Once you go off of it, your appetite returns.
Foods Does green tea increase your metabolism? Apr 10 2008

I have been drinking green tea daily for years (no sugar or sweetener)and here I am needing to lose about 50 lbs....so this is not a cure-all for weight loss. You can eat fattening fries and candy bars and wash it down with green tea and it won't help you really.

I'm sure it helps a little bit. Maybe I'd have to lose 55 instead of 50 if I haven't been drinking it so much. Who knows?

Lifestyle totally. when I was single I ate what I wanted and when I wanted and worked out a lot. Then I got married and my husband liked to eat together and relax together and I set aside my desires for him in this area.

Then life got busy. We had responsibilities at our church in the evenings and I was too tired to get up and get to the gym in the morning.

Then came the kids and age. It's just little things adding up over the ears manifesting in calories, calories, calories.

On the surface, yes. It seems you are not eating much. You need to eat more and more fiber. You are hardly giving it enough to live on, which is why you are hanging on to fat and your metabolism is probably in a rut.

1000 may work for you. I would concentrate on eating more frequently. Eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. Switch to whole wheat bread. Even a full fat slice of cheese will help you. It's only one slice and the fat will make you feel fuller and more satisfied. Eat more lean ham and chicken and turkey.

In other words, eat a more balanced diet. Your diet seems devoid of any fiber or fruit and very little veggies.

Good luck!
Weight Loss Need ideas to change my routine.. help ! Apr 09 2008

Do interval training on the treadmill. For example...here is a 27 min routine I've been doing.

5 min warmup

2 mins HARD pace

1 minute moderate pace

repeat cycle 3 times

Cool down 3 minutes.

Or do a different cardio machine. It is probably easy for your body to do the treadmill...try the elliptical or stair master or rower. Incorporate some weight training.

hope that helps!

Eat a good meal high in protein. I noticed that part of the reason you are so hungry is that your food is so high in carbs and low in protein. Have a good balance. The mashed potato, apple, won tons...high in carbs.

Definitely eat and keep the carbs low on a day like this to help balance things out and satisfy your appetite for fewer cals. Good luck!
Fitness Weight Wont Budge No Matter How Much I Exercise...is it my age? or my body? Apr 08 2008

Part of it is that you are 40+ now. I might suggest maybe skipping the gym altogether for a couple of weeks and just do something different like take a dance class or go roller blading or do something different completely.

Your body is very efficient at doing what it does and it gets used to what it does. You might want to shake up your aerobic routine and your weight routine by doing intervals for your aerobic activity and supersets for your weights.
