tami - I try to maintain my cardio at 5 days a week, 30 - 45 minutes at a time. Every other day I do strength training or pilates.  Elliptical trainers are great since my knees always bother me with anything else.

Try upping the resistance, I think that's more important than speed (i.e, you can go fast at low resistance and you aren't challenging your muscles).  I would also aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of any cardio activity, even if you need to gradually build yourself up by adding 5 minutes each time.  This is what I've always heard, anyway, and I think also the health recommendation (30 min of moderate activity). You can also trade off and do a lower intensity workout for a longer period of time - walk for 1 hour, instead. I do that when I'm feeling low energy.

Do you have any way of measuring your heart rate?  When I worked out at home, I had no idea of knowing if I was 'pushing' myself. Now that I'm at a health club, I can make sure my heart stays above the 'target' rate for cardio training or fat burning for my entire session.  I really noticed a difference!

I'm glad these meals are around, they save a lot of time for busy women! BUT just make a note of the sodium (i.e., salt) content in these foods. Often they use salt as a preservative to keep these meals flavorful. I don't recall which one, but I ate a Lean Cuisine meal one time that in it's one little box had 40% of my daily recommended sodium intake! Excess sodium is not good for us, esp. anyone with blood pressure problems. Anyway just a thought - there are still some great options out there! :)
Weight Loss Birth Control = Weight Gain? Aug 17 2007

I am on the birth control shot, Depo Pro vera.  I did gain almost 10 pounds in the first year I was on it, but it was 100% due to appetite increase. I think it depends on the type and amount of hormone you are on for the birth control, and it is really just if you eat more (as a result of cravings) that will lead to weight gain or not. I ate like crap because that's what I craved - on top of eating more total calories. and not exercising so a real bad combo  I have since started to eat better and am having no problem dropping some of the weight and I'm still on the birth control.  So I would say maybe keep track of what you eat and see if you feel like you're starting to crave or eat more and try to stay on top of it. Plenty of women don't gain weight on the pill.  Good luck!

Focus on how you feel, especially how great you feel when someone tells you they think you've lost weight.  I just looked at your pics from January and then June - it's a real difference!  You are doing great just keep it up and remember that it won't happen overnight. Continue to do all of the right things. Your body just has to adjust, sometimes it takes awhile before the loss will continue.  I do cardio 4 days a week 30-45 minutes and I find that when I start to see a plateau if I add a few more minutes of cardio to each session it really makes the difference, i.e. my body has to work a little harder to see results because I'm gradually getting in better shape.

I totally sympathize...I feel like sometimes I make it most of  the day and then I just make a bad decision or I love what I'm eating and don't stop. Just remember, eating salad for one day won't make you lose weight and eating badly for one day won't make you gain it. Just get back on track tomorrow, like everyone is suggesting.  Maybe put in a few extra minutes of cardio tomorrow.  Good luck! :)

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
