| Pregnancy & Parenting | 18 weeks pregnant with third baby and still haven't felt baby move - HELP | Nov 03 2009 05:03 (UTC) |
3 |
I read that it isn't that the movements are felt earlier, it's that the mother is more tuned into what the movements feel like and thus recognize it before a first time mother would. 18 weeks is really early to worry about this, but if you aren't going to be calm, you can call and ask to come in early, or you can buy a heart rate monitor - check craigslist for a used one or they have them at Motherhood Maternity. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Pregnancy and the Flu | Sep 29 2009 22:09 (UTC) |

This is THE topic in our office because I'm pregnant (due in a week) and my coworker's wife is pregnant. I was given the seasonal flu shot last week and I didn't fight it, even though I've never received a flu shot in my life, nor do I plan to have them again. Flu activity is extremely high in Dallas and I felt it was important to get the added protection. Yes, most of the activity is H1N1, which I haven't been vaccinated against, but I honestly view this as something is better than nothing. I won't be pregnant when the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, but I will be breastfeeding and antibodies will pass from me to my baby via the milk. I haven't made a final decision on this vaccine, but I'm leaning towards doing it under the hope that it helps protect my child. She can't be vaccinated, which in some ways is a relief because it's a hard decision to make. There was a swine flu epidemic in the 70's and there is a lot of speculation in the medical field that this is why older people aren't as susceptible to it. They have natural antibodies. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | telling ppl you are pregnant | Sep 29 2009 21:46 (UTC) |

I told my family and closest friends almost immediately. My thought process was that if I did miscarry, I would want their support and wouldn't hide that, so why not share the joyous news with them. Everyone else (work, acquaintances, etc.) was told after I entered my second trimester. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | What are the silliest names you ever thought to name your children? | Sep 26 2009 14:45 (UTC) |

We're expecting our baby in a week and the naming process was borderline torture. At one point we decided we should each give our hippy names. He likes Winter Anne and I liked Clover Anne (we had both agreed to make her middle name Anne after my mother). I also always liked Delilah and Pandora (the latter of which would have tortured her once boys were old enough to make Pandora's Box references).

| Health & Support | need new clothes and I'm crying | Sep 26 2009 14:42 (UTC) |

I think it's great that you're husband told you to go get some nice clothes that fit. You're walking around in grubby clothes that you don't care about. It's hard to feel good about yourself if you don't feel good about your appearance. If you go get new items that fit and flatter, you have more confidence, you have a better attitude, and that even helps with weight loss. If you make an effort on your appearance, I think you'll feel better about yourself. If you're attitude about your appearance is basically that you've given up, it's really hard to be positive and focused on weight loss. A confident size 20 in a flattering outfit is going to look a lot better than a sloppy, defeated size 10. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | How soon would a home pregnancy test be accurate? | Sep 07 2009 23:08 (UTC) |
9 |
I took an ept test about 4 days before my missed period and it came back negative, which was false. The day after my missed period the pregnancy tests were positive. You're going to have to wait the rest of the week to be sure. That being said, the weight gain sounds more like period related water weight than anything else. You don't start gaining weight immediately upon becoming pregnant. Peeing all the time is a symptom much later in your pregnancy caused because the baby is large enough to apply pressure on your bladder. The rest of your symptoms can be both period related or pregnancy related. The mild cramping can be either implantation or PMS. |

I quit cold turkey when I found out i was pregnant. Headache for a couple days then I was fine. Shortly afterwards, coffee and tea (especially earl gray) smelled so vile that I didn't want it at all. Now I'll have the occasional soda or iced coffee, no more than one in a day and no more than three a week. |

I make something similar with a package of sugar free jello (follow instructions) and a container of cool whip stirred in just before putting into fridge. Add fruit if desired - i call it fluff too. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | heart palpitations, chest constrictions, weight loss, & a weird rash... NOT enjoying my first pregnancy. :/ | Jul 10 2009 21:45 (UTC) |

I had the rash. It was early on though - I was about 6 weeks pregnant (I'm 28 now). I just broke out in hives, practically all over. Went to the doctor and the official diagnosis was, "Sometimes pregnant women get hives." Cleared up in about 4-5 days. |

As a former chubby teen girl, I vote for leave it alone. You can do the family activities, etc. but she's at that sensitive age where all females start having body image issues and trying to put myself in her shoes, I can't imagine the conversation ending without me feeling horrible and more insecure. If you really believe discussing it is important, I'd go the route of discussing the importance of getting 30 minutes in 4-5 times a week for health and stay away from discussing her weight or size. I remember suede skirts were in style when I was in eighth grade (so 13-14) and I begged for one. My mother told me she would buy me one if I got to a size 8. To this day it's the only parenting mistake I recall that truly upset me. You can always get a family membership to the local Y or a gym with the understanding that she can go anytime she wants - I would never have been willing to workout or exercise with my parents. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | allergic to folic acid? | May 01 2009 22:14 (UTC) |

How far along are you and for how long have you tested the hives w/ folic acid supplement theory? have you tried to eat a meal with a large quantity of folic acid to see if there's a reaction? Ditto to bier's suggestion of an organic supplement. The regular Women's One A day prenatals made me feel gross but i've been on the organic for over a month now and have no problems. When I was around six weeks pregnant I broke out in hives and went to the doctor and ended up with a diagnosis of, "sometimes pregnant women get hives in their first trimester from all the hormones." Mine went away after about four to five days and I never did pinpoint what specifically made it flare up - sometimes I would be eating, sometimes not, etc. |

Quick clarification on the Family Medical Leave Act - if the company you work for has less than X number of employees, which I believe is 15 but need to double check, then they are exempt from the FMLA. I know this because my company is exempt and I'm due in October so telling them scared the hell out of me. So far they seem completely receptive to my taking six weeks. |

I did half potatoes and half cauliflower to mask the taste for my boyfriend - I boiled a few cloves of garlic with the potatoes and mashed those in as well. Really good. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Exercising while pregnant - first trimester | Mar 12 2009 16:00 (UTC) |
|
Thanks! I'm counting down to second trimester - I'd just like to feel slightly normal. I did mention the gagging - it seemed to kick in once I got my heart rate up and I stopped and caught my breath and was okay, but once I started working out hard again, the gagging came back. The Dr. wasn't concerned but told me to choose less intense forms of aerobics/exercise until I get past the first trimester nausea.

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Calorie Counting When Pregnant | Mar 12 2009 15:18 (UTC) |

I'm a few days shy of 11 weeks and I'm equally worried about weight gain. When I try to workout (real cardio of any kind) I start gagging, so I'm pretty much left with walking. I've mostly stopped counting calories and just try to eat nutritiously. I log every once in awhile because I've been good at getting deficits for so long that I have to conciously think about eating enough. I'm trying to use this as a guide, but it's a lot of food to eat. Some of the weight gain is bloating, which is normal. I felt bloated at 6 weeks - my breasts started growing a little around then too. Congratulations! |

You can't approach him about his lifestyle, but you could have discussions as they relate to your diet or lifestyle. Talk about trans-fats and how deadly they are, talk about high fructose corn syrup and how it's poison. Make sure you aren't pointing fingers at him, you're just talking about things that are important to you. I have two male friends who had heart attacks at 30 and they both lived off processed foods and take-out.

| HA! I did the half and half to trick my boyfriend into eating vegetables. Boiled potatoes with two or three garlic cloves and steamed the cauliflower. I used an immersion blender to puree the cauliflower with the boiled garlic, then added it to the boiled potatoes with butter and 2% milk, salt and pepper. Not as healthy as straight cauliflower, but healthier than straight up potatoes. Boyfriend was clueless - had seconds and said he loved the potatoes. I think the garlic really helped to mask any possible cauliflower flavor. |

| Weight Loss | Should This Happen? | Sep 10 2008 21:16 (UTC) |

| If your body has been in starvation mode for an extended period of time, you will initially gain weight before you start to lose. It will take some amount of time (depends on how long you've been under-eating) before your metabolism will fix itself. |

| Fitness | Curves - hey is this a good workout??? | Sep 10 2008 20:04 (UTC) |
4 |
| I started losing weight when I joined Curves. I lost about 55-60 pounds before I hit that Curves Plateau and had to upgrade to the big kid gym to start losing again, but it certainly was effective in the beginning (and middle). Curves target clientele are middle-aged, sedentary women who aren't going to stick to a real gym. I wasn't middle-aged, but I was morbidly obese and felt horribly self-conscious at a regular gym. While I consider myself intelligent, most everything I thought I knew about nutrition and my body was incorrect, so having a predetermined workout as I "relearned" was very beneficial. I recommend Curves to any overweight woman that needs help getting started. If you commit, you will outgrow Curves, but it was definitely worth it for me. From what I understand, Lady Fitness and/or some other female gyms offer both the circuit training of Curves and a regular gym section - so you could consider that. |

| The Lounge | Please help .. fleas;( | Sep 04 2008 17:52 (UTC) |

| I had a flea infestation once in my hardwood floor duplex. Went to the vet and bought advantage for my cat - this killed the fleas on her within 24 hours or so. To treat the house I bought a flea bug spray from the grocery store and sprayed every room (took the cat out with me for a couple hours) came back and vacuumed and mopped. Ditched the vacuum bag and repeated the process a few days later in case there were any eggs in the apartment during the first cleaning. Labor intensive but 100% solved the problem. |

| It's such an interesting subject - on the one hand everyone that's known you longer than a year and a half knows what you have accomplished and they're impressed/proud, on the other hand, it's also kind of like the friend is telling your secrets. I'd contact him and say that you're proud of yourself, but that when new friends see the pictures they are learning something about you that you haven't felt comfortable sharing with them yet and could he please remove the links and/or take them down. |
