| Weight Loss | A word about deficits and "net calories" | Sep 21 2009 19:50 (UTC) |

I have been told by my doctor and sports physiologist that eating below your BMR actually lowers your BMR cause your body is trying ot conserve energy. You should never eat below your BMR to lose weight, you should instead be making the effort to move around more to make up the difference. |

Bradleykun, please tell me that your message was one big typo. That is the most dangerous thing I have ever heard of anybody doing! This would do damage to all your internal organs, and also have the potential to do irreversible heart damage. Please go see a doctor concerning this, even if you are eating a normal amount now, just to make sure you have not done permanent damage. Please don't post any other comments like this on these forums again either. It encourages teenagers who are already a good weight a size to go to extremes to lose weight fast. It may not have killed you, but it could kill one of them.

| Weight Loss | Would love some advice!:) | Jun 27 2009 03:46 (UTC) |

Your body needs to recover. If you are exercising that much... its probably a good idea to stay between 1600-2000 calories per day... and just wait until your weight levels off. It may even peak and start decreasing... once it has been level for a week, then start adjusting your calories down maybe 100 calories for a 2-3 week span and see what weight comes off. When you reach the point where you can consistently lose 1 lb a week... that would be the best starting point for you. Unfortunately with a recovering metabolism... your body will have to work this number out for you... nobody can provide you a magic number of calories where you will lose a ocuple of pounds next week. |

It sounds like you may need to try a different approach to losing weight. If you view it as a lifestyle change that will be the rest of your life... you may have more success eating well and getting yourself a regular exercise program. People who try to lose weight "really fast" a lot of the time end up not being able to keep with it, restrict their calories too much, and end up gaining everything they lost back and more. Its not what people like to hear... but the good news is if you commit to an overall lifestyle change... the chances of the weight coming back and you going back to bad habits gets pretty slim. From what I can see... it seems like you are eating probably 1000 calories a day at most depending on your light snacks. This is unfortunately not enough food, so your body thinks that it needs to retain and store absolutely every last calorie it can get ahold of... and your metabolisms slows to help your body store energy. The first thing you need to do is make a list of all the foods you like to eat, find out how many calories are in all the food, and start preparing yourself food with a specific calorie target goal in mind. If you want to work out 3-4 days a week, you will probably need around 1600 calories per day with maybe a 50/30/20 (Carbs/Protein/Fat) ratio for your body to be able to work out efficiently and gain the most from your workouts. Because you have been eating so few calories for a while... you may gain some weight at first, but it will start to come off after a few weeks. The reason you are seeing white dots and getting blurry vision while you are working out is because its your body's way of telling you that it can't keep doing this. Eventually you may pass out while holding heavy weights and really hurt yourself... The headache is likely from lack of carbs... your body needs them to function properly.

| Weight Loss | Breakfast is important, but when to eat it? | Jun 27 2009 03:04 (UTC) |

My personal trainer that I hired told me that when I have an early morning workout, as soon as I roll out of bed in the morning I should eat a banana... and since the gym is about a 20 minute drive... it has a bit of time to digest. The banana has enough energy and electrolytes in it that I can easily make it through one of my trainer's heavier workouts without difficulty... then I drink a protein shake after that I bring with me... and my day always feels like I started it off right... but I dont feel like I ate way too much either. |

| At this point you have nothing to lose... so why not take the advice, give your body about a month to get used to you eating more, DONT STEP ON A SCALE FOR THAT MONTH!!! Then after a month, take out the scale again, and go from there...
You will gain a few pounds at first, cause your body is in starvation mode, but in order to get past this, the only thing you can do is eat more... then once your body is assured that it is not starving and that it will continue to get food regularly, you will lose weight. |

| Weight Loss | Stopping bingeing & overeating: Did it work for you? | Sep 25 2008 22:12 (UTC) |

| After being the MOH in my best friend's wedding at the beginning of August, we were looking at the pictures, and I realized just how bad I did look when compared to the other bridesmaids. It probably also didn't help that I was about a foot taller then either of them. I was feeling rather disgusted wtih myself that I had let it get that far... and I am not terribly overweight to begin with at 5'9.5" and 187 pounds. I figured I had about 40 pounds or so to lose in order to get to where I want to be at 145 pounds.
It was almost like I had to wake up one morning and mentally flip a switch in my brain. I am now at 37 days, and bought this really nice leatherbound book to track everything that I eat every day. I am down 9 pounds in those 37 days, and have not been at 178.2 pounds for over a year. I am still working on training and lifting weights more then just sporadically... but it is finally all coming together. I have had a few treats as I went, I have had an egg/sausage mcmuffin meal from MacDonalds. I have been out for Vietnamese Food. I have had small amount of chocolate, cheesecake, danishes. We did go to Red Lobster for endless shrimp one night. I am definitely not missing out. My biggest trigger foods are ukrainian sausage and ice cream snadwiches. So I keep a box of ice cream sandwiches in my freezer (Skinny Cow) and I cut up a roll o ukrainian sausage into such think slices adn eat them one at a time, so that I get the prolonged taste of it, but I don't eat a whole role in on sitting, which is about 2000 calories. |

| If eating 1400-1500 calories is a big increase to you, then you need to take a second look at how much youo are eating. you are only 16 and need to eat 1500 calories as a base minimum no mater what. Without eating that much you could really do some damage to your body and your metabolism. | |||

|
| Unfortunately it tends to be trial and error for everybody at first, but it does get somewhat easier. This is not a diet, its a lifestyle change and it will happen for you.
As long as you are consistently losing 1-2 pounds per week, I would stick with 1500 calories perday. If you find that at some point your weight is stuck at a certain number and not moving, that is when you should look at either your food intake, or your exercise and make some changes to your routine. |

| You should be eating at a maintenance level, and if you are not happy with your body, make time in your schedule to fit it in. Regardless of how much weight you lose, if you are flabby now, you will still be flabby after losing weight, its just the way bodies work. Not all of the weight you are losing is fat, you would be surprised how much of it is muscle when you are not eating right. | |||

| Holidays are teh worst for me. Its easy when were with my family, cause they are very health conscious as my mom has a bacterial lung infection that can not be treated, adn by dad has high cholesterol.
My mother-in-law on the other hand makes hes husband two packs of bacon every morning for breakfast, and saves all teh fat in order to cook everything else that she makes in it. Basically everything ends up tasting like bad pork. Not a lot of fun for somebody who generally doesn't eat pork in the first place, n/m the sheer amount of fat. GROSS! |

| For the time being, at your current weight your body probably needs more food. your BMR would be at a rough guess approximately 1800 calories per day. This is the base number of calories that your body currently needs to function if you are asleep 24/7. I would be a little worried that at 1250 calories a day you may be putting yourself into starvation mode over an extended period of time, which could hamper your weightloss. You should be eating at leats 1500 calories per day.
A long slow weight loss is your best chance at maintaining your goal weight. Its also the best way to end up with the least amount of loose skin on your body. There are plenty of calorie rich foods that can help you increase your intake, without making you feel bloated or way too full. Different forms of sim and low fat cheese are great fillers, so is peanut butter or some almonds. |

| Weight Loss | Has anyone lost weight by increasing their fat consumption? | Sep 23 2008 16:24 (UTC) |

| You are definitely low on fat. If you are eating about 1600 calories per day, then I would recommened about a 20% fat intake as a minimum, which is about 37g of fat per day. When I was eating only 20g of fat per day I noticed that my hair was falling out like crazy, my skin wasn't as nice, my weight stalled a lot. Tossing up your diet an adding healthy fats may be th change your body is looking for. | |||
| Weight Loss | Just Wondering | Sep 22 2008 16:42 (UTC) |

| Kizzi, I am concerned that you are recommending less then the base level of calories required for an obese teen to lose weight. I do not believe this is appropriate for a 15 year female who's body is still developing. Monkey-Paws, if you would like to track what you eat, I think you should take the initiative. but I also thing you should concentrate on eating no less then 1800 calories per day, but spend about 30-45 minutes each day either going for a walk or lifting light weights. This will also help you tone your muscles, which will give you a much slimmer and toned look. Do not concentrate on the scale numbers, instead take some measurements, and watch the measurements decrease as you build healthy muscle. A toned female at 155 pounds can look much slimmer then one at 140 pounds who does not carry very much muscle. | |||
| Weight Loss | how much is a good amount to try and lose by october 31? | Sep 21 2008 01:42 (UTC) |

| I would say that between 5-10 pounds could be safely lost by then if you eat reasonably well and exercise. That is between 1-2 pounds per week. The big thing to remember is that losing weight is about 80% diet, and 20% exercise.. so try to take in lots of vegetables/fruits, lean meats or other protein sources, whole wheat carbs, and some dairy for calcium to keep your bones strong. I would aim for approximately 1600 calories per day. | |||
| Weight Loss | Have I screwed up my metabolism by not eating enough? If so, can I fix it? | Sep 21 2008 01:26 (UTC) |
|
| Hey,
I am female, at 5'9.5", and currently weighing 181 pounds. I started at 194 pounds and am aiming for 145 roughly as my end goal, so fairly similar to you. I eat approximately 1650 calories per day of about 20% fats, 35% protein and 45% carbs. This is working quite well for me, and I have consistently lost between 1-2 pounds per week without a lot of trouble. I am a real meat eater, so I find that getting tha tmuch protein is quite easily, and its helping to keep me feeling full longer, as well as helping my muscles recover from the exercise. I find that it is just enough that I can exercise for about an hour a day 3-5 days per week, and still do very well. I am not talking about all out killing myself while working out, but doing some spin classes, swimming, and some strength and balance training. |

| We do keep one container of Chapman's Peanut Free Ice Cream in the house, as its my boyfriend's favourite treat, but his favourite kind is Neopolitan, which I hate, so I am not tempted. For me we normally have a box of Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches, and I eat a couple of them a week.
The only bad thing is that sometimes I find that I would really like a change and to go out to dinner at a nice restaurant, and hes right there saying "are you really sure?" about a dozen times to the point where I give up and cook. It can get pretty monotonous sometimes. I crave foods like primerib, fettucinni alfredo and cheesecake, which is all stuff he is trying to keep me away from. |

| Weight Loss | Why do I do it to myself? | Sep 16 2008 20:54 (UTC) |

| I am working extremely hard to break this cycle right now, and so far I am at DAY 28, and down 7.2 lbs. The most important thing for me is that when I am really having a hard time, my boyfriend chooses to become my conscious, and trust me this can get annoying. I really want a specific thing to eat and the first thing he says is "are you really sure about that"?
He's really helping me out by being home in time to have dinner with me every night, so that we prepare a healthy dinner together. We never eat out anymore, in less we specifically plan it ahead of time and look at the menus online so I can decide what to eat. I have also joined a triathlon training club which I am really enjoying and having fun attending training sessions. He is tracking my weight and measurements as much as I am and providing tons of encouragement, seeing as he went through the same thing a couple of years ago and lost 60 pounds with me behind him the whole way. We have also sat down and talked about it and chosen some rewards for me when I achieve milestones. My weight started at 187.2 and the milestones are set at 180, 170, 160, 150, and 140 which is my ultimate goal. None of them are food related which helps. There is a book I want that I will get to go out and buy this weekend, the next one is a small spa package, then new lingerie, then a day in Banf, Alberta, followed by booking our month long backpacking trip to Europe for April 2009 once I achieve my final goal. I found that I had to mentally flip a switch in my brain, it just got the point where I had been trying to diet on and off for three years, and have gotten absolutely nowhere. I did get my weight to stablize in the high 180s, which is a BMI of about 28 for me. I was feeling disgusted with myself. So I went out and bought a really nice leather covered notebook and together we wrote down my weight and current measurements, then set a bunch of goals for me to achieve. I track my eating habits every single day in there and give myself a pat on teh back for everyday that I avoid going out for some kind of pub lunch with the people I work with. |

| Weight Loss | why insist on making it complicated? | Sep 13 2008 01:45 (UTC) |

| I don't think its a matter of eating less. I think its a matter of eating smarter. If you eat smarter, you can fill up on 1600 calories per day easily, never mind at maintenance levels.
I am not sure if you have Boston Pizza in the States, but we went out for dinner tonight for the first time since I started to "eat smarter" and make the effort to exercise more. We opened up thei new menu and were pleasantly surprised to see that they now have a section of food specifically prepared in healthier ways. I asked the waitresss for their nutritional information and the food in that part of the menu really was that much better. This is starting to become more and more common in restaurants. One thing a lot of people don't know is that any of the larger chain restaurants do have their nutritional information avaiable, you just have to ask for it. It can make it a lot easier to make the better choice, then you don't have to worry about leaving half the food on your plate. |

| Then you will find this amazing 6'3" guy who loves tall girls, and it won't matter anymore. Don't worry so much about the other girls, cause I guarantee they have have problems and insecurities too. some of them may be looking right back at you and thinking that they wish they had long legs too, or that they were a little curvier, or a number of other things.
Work on putting some time in at the gym, adn toning up your body, not losing weight, it will make you look slimmer over time, and will also give you a lot of confidence. There are also a lot of good looking guys at the gym :) |

| Weight Loss | Is putting Crystal light in water the same as just drinking water? | Sep 11 2008 21:27 (UTC) |

| I drink Crystal Light quite a bit, the only thing that I notice is that if I haev drink it in every bottle of water that the aspartame makes me start craving sweets. I normally put a tablesppon or so of pure lemon juice in my water. I gives it a bit of flavour and lemon/lime is supposed to help quench thirst as well.. though if you are drinking water all day and you are still super thirsty, there is proabbly something wrong. | |||

| I have had my Wii Fit since the launch date in May. I don't use it as my primary form of exercise, I don't think its suited for that. I still swim, bike, run, and weight train. But it is a lot of fun if you don't feel like going out to the gym, as you still can burn some calories, without it really feeling like exercise. I tend to play on it on my days off from the gym just to keep my metabolism buyrning higher on those days. It has kind of turned into a family competition to get the best scores. | |||
| Weight Loss | This Site Says --- | Sep 10 2008 23:38 (UTC) |
|
| The site is predicting a weightloss of 1 pound per week roughly. thsi is approximately a 500 calorie deficit per day. It is safe to go as far as a 1000 calorie defeicit per day, which would theoretically result in a 2 pound weightloss per week. So the weight could be safely lost in about half that amount of time.
If your weightloss averages out to more then 2 pounds per week after the first few weeks, then you need to rethink how you are going about your weightloss regime. You will be at risk for things such as loose skin and starvation mode. I would recommend eating to your BMR and achieving your deficit by exercising for an hour a few days per week. You will feel healthier and happier with yourself as exercise releases endorphins. |

| Health & Support | How often do you pee? | Sep 10 2008 23:09 (UTC) |
22 |
| I asked my doctor about this once, and he told me that as long as your pee has color to it, your body is using it to get rid of waste from your kidneys. This is a good thing! He told me that there are two ways to know if you have had enough water that day. The first is that my the evening your pee should be clean/clear and barely have a yellow tinge, and second that if you wear rings on your fingers that tehy can slide around easily cause that means you are not retaining excess water due to dehydration. | |||

| Practicallypeach, you need to understand that we are not really sure how to help you, which is why we are trying to toss out suggestions that may have worked for us.
I know how frustrating it is to live in a dorm, where you are not able to attempt to cook your own food, and everything is prepared by somebody else. It is extremely difficult to know exactly how many calories you are putting in your body. With a lot of food dislikes it can be much harder yet. The majority of people here don't have a lot of the same food dislikes so itmakes it harder to provide advice that is helpful to you. Maybe look into joining some kind of intramural or sports club, I think I remember you saying you like to run for exercise, so maybe a cross-country team may be ideal for you. that way you would be able to meet more people that you can be friends with that may be more supportive. But try not to drop your other friends either.. when people think back on their past, losing friends tends to be something they regret later in life. |

| Something else that is really good, even though they are a bit pricier (up here in Canada they tend to be about $8 for a box of 5) are the Skinny Cow or Breyers Ice Cream sandwiches. These things are low fat, and I don't know what they put in them, but they are definitely good.
If you crave patato chips, take a look at the Lays Baked Potato chips, they have way less fat, so do the low fat pringles. Popcorn is also a great snack food. |

| Practicallypeach, there are some things I do to help me with that as well. While my boyfriend may be supportive, he likes all his junk food, chips, and ice cream as well. Here are some ideas instead of missing out:
Keep a pack of chewing gum around, that way you can have something that tastes good keeping your mouth busy if they pull out a bag of chips. With a fresh piece of gum in your mouth you might find yourself less likely to want to indulge. This is something that we noticed that they really push on the TV show "The Biggest Loser". Another option is to carry one of the Cadbury thins chocolate bars in your purse. They are really good, I love the mint/milk chocolate ones. They have only 100 calories per bar, and generally cost less than a dollar. That way you get a sweet treat too. |
