I was on Effexor XR for about a year and gained 30lbs on the same doseage that you were on. I would ask if you can switch to something else. I was counting calories, drinking tons of water, and excerising like you and the weight didn't come off till I stopped taking them. |

I took Effexor XR about 2 years ago and yes I did gain weight (30lbs) despite dieting and excerising, made me tired and sleepy all the time. There were times I was getting shin splints just from walking. I finally decided to get off of them when I fell asleep studying for an exam which was at 3pm and almost missed!!!

Original Post by yankerosa: I would have yourself checked out just in case it is not low iron and it's also can be toxic to your system if you supplement your iron with out having your levels checked. Another sign is being over tired.
From what the doctors told me about the symptoms I reported when I was low on iron-it apparently feels like symptoms of pregnancy (I have never been pregnant but this is what I have been told) |

I would have your ferritin levels checked because it sounds like you could be iron deficient. Same thing has happened to me (hair kept falling out) twice due to iron deficiency. It can also make you feel tired, and dizzy when it gets really bad. |

I would go to a doctor and have your iron levels checked. This has happened to me twice where I lost a lot of hair due to low iron. |

| Weight Loss | Cymbalta weight gain | Jul 11 2009 05:51 (UTC) |
|
I was on a low dose (75mg) of Effexor back in 2006 for GAD. Cymbalta is supposedly known as the sister drug to Effexor I intially lost and then started gaining. I gained 10lbs with diet and excerise with in a month (I think the 10 was water weight) and then went up another 20lbs. While it did control my anxiety, I couldn't lose the weight (the most I would lose would be 5lbs) not too mention that it was causing me problems with walking even. I was tired but forced myself to excerise and finally decided to get off of the meds when I fell asleep studying for an exam and almost missed it (exam was at 3pm). I lost 10lbs without effort after getting off the meds (why I think it was water weight) and lost another 10lbs through excerising and counting calories. I am in the process of losing the last 10lbs. I really do think it has slowed down my metabolism permanently. I have never worked so hard to get this weight off. I do think what I was taking caused my cholesterol levels to spike as well and went down when I got off the meds. This is my experience. I know some people won't gain weight-the lucky ones lose.I found my weight would not budge till I got off the meds. Maybe you could ask your doctor to switch you to something which may be less likely for you to gain weight. |

| Weight Loss | Any other closet eaters out there? | May 20 2009 01:58 (UTC) |
2 |
I am a closet eater as well. I am trying to get out of this pattern.
I wonder if this has to do with some sort of deprivation from childhood which causes the closet eating. I do remember my mother not really buying us candy when we were little (donuts were ok though, only because she liked them). Today I don't buy donuts or even eat them even if they are free for the taking. I notice I tend to binge on the things that we hardly ever had or got in the house. On the other hand I also tend to like ice cream which we always had in the house because my dad liked it. I guess it can be a pattern that we have learned as a result of being told not to eat that and you can't eat that or possible good feelings/old memories we get from binging on this food?? |

| Weight Loss | Anyone else gain weight on Prozac? | Nov 01 2008 17:34 (UTC) |

my mother was on prozac for anxiety and she lost weight. It really varies from person to person when it comes to AD's. I was placed on Effexor and gained about 30lbs in a few months. You should ask your doctor if you can switch to something else that won't cause weight gain. Keep trying till you find one that is weight neutral for you. |

| Weight Loss | Will going off birth control help lose weight? | Sep 01 2008 07:20 (UTC) |

don't know a whole lot about birth control from taking them but I have heard that Yasmin is weight neutral in most cases and some will even lose a little weight on them due to something in the pill. Overall, I think with all BCP you are susceptible to weight gain. You could moniter your weight and diet closely for a few weeks and see if you gain and try something else till you find something that works for you. I almost decided to try BCP this past year for my skin but refuse to take them because I am terrified of the weight gain along with the hormones in BCP themselves. BCP brought me back to a time when I was taking effexor and it definetly made me gain weight (30lbs) despite watching what I ate and excerising. I still have bad skin but I don't care. |

I had a corneal ulcer for the same reason and it got pretty bad. I thought it was pink eye till I went to a walk in clinic to find out what it was. I had to go to emergency to see an opthamologist and was prescribed 3 different types of drops for my eye which I had to put in every 3 hours! I had to get up in the middle of the night to put these drops in my eye and needed to put the 3 drops in my eye with a certain sequence. It was aweful! To top that off my eyes are pretty bad so even with thin lenses my glasses look like bottom of coke bottles and wasn't allowed to wear my contacts for about 3 months and constantly had to follow up with the eye doctor to make sure it was healing properly. When the drops were finished I still had to put synthetic tears in my eyes along with another topical that protects it. Not fun but I am happy to say I still have my vision and will never neglect my vision again. I hope your case is not as bad as mine was =) |

| Motivation | How are you rewarding yourself for losing weight? | Aug 31 2008 00:09 (UTC) |

To reward myself and keep myself motivated to reach my goal, I buy smaller clothes as well. I don't have a lot of money for clothes so sometimes I use my old ones that I used to wear when I was thin to motivate me again |

| Weight Loss | Let say - you were stupid enough to eat a whole pizza | Aug 30 2008 07:46 (UTC) |
13 |
I just ate 1/2 a thick crust pizza myself on Tuesday. I have been craving pizza for a while now. I didn't lose anything this week because of it. I think we all have slip ups so don't worry about it and start fresh the next day. Best thing you can do is learn from it and use strategies for the next time you decide to eat pizza. I know for next time not to order a whole pizza but go to a place that sells individual servings for instance or have a slice or 2 and give the rest away. I gave what I had left to a friend so it was out of reach and out of site. |

| Weight Loss | what are your hip measurements? and what size pants do you wear? | Aug 30 2008 07:41 (UTC) |

I am 35" around the widest part of my hips. I have no butt either but my stomach is bigger (I'm apple shaped) so sometimes I can fit in to 6's but mostly size 7/8. |

| Foods | Anyone else eating ALOT of sandwiches? | Aug 29 2008 07:30 (UTC) |

I get sick of sandwiches too so once in a while I buy multi-grain bagels and make sandwiches out of those. My favourite is a BLT bagel with cheese. I usually toast the bagel with the cheese and it's really good. I also put peanut butter on them, buy fat free cream cheese and have it like that or just butter. I'm a bagel freak =) |

| Weight Loss | How often do you weigh yourself? | Aug 28 2008 02:48 (UTC) |
7 |
I weigh myself 2 a week, sometimes more. I find it helps me keep track and focussed is the reason I weigh so often. I know this is not good and weight doesn't come off overnight but say if I gain 3 pounds (I binged yesterday =() like I did today, I modify my diet right away by drinking more water, cutting down on sodium and eat healthier foods during the day. |

| The Lounge | Average bra size? | Aug 28 2008 02:44 (UTC) |
101 |
Who really knows what's considered average these days. Sizes in bras can also vary along with measurements. I am a 38C/40B based on my measurements and calculating them on websites so this makes me feel kinda of more closer to average which is nice but one site gave me an A-cup???? I am no where near an A-cup. Under my bust I am 35" and my bust is 40". I do believe they make me look so much larger than I really am and thanks to having an apple shape, they don't go down at all so it really sucks-even at 120 they are about the same size. I weigh 130lbs and am 5'3"......while it does make my waist look a little thinner, I wouldn't mind having them slightly smaller so in some instances I think it's the way the body has been built and not an accumulation of fat because of being overweight. |

| Weight Loss | How do you get rid of a double chin??? | Aug 28 2008 02:33 (UTC) |
2 |
I know how you feel about the double chin. I'm about 5'3 and weigh about 130lbs and you can still see my double chin in pictures. I really think mine is genetics. First time I have not seen my double chin was when I was 115lbs which was when I was in high school. Even at 120lbs you can still sort of see it. Maybe I should try these exercises too |

that is so rude. i find a lot of people do stuff like that to make themselves feel better or others feel inferior. don't let her get to you. i have had many rude comments said to me-to the point where i wear hoodies in 60+ ferenheit weather because all those comments have really stuck with me. I am trying to work on it and challenge this anger and energy with excerise.

| Weight Loss | Who's seeing a nutritionist? | Aug 15 2008 09:26 (UTC) |

I went to a dietician for one appointment only to evaluate what I was eating and to get a basic plan to help me out. It was very informative when it came to what kind of things I was eating which was stalling my weight loss. Went through portions with me, and gave me a diet to follow based on the food guide. I think I would do it again if I had the money and keep up with seeing a dietician to evaluate my nutrition needs as well as holding me accountable for what I am eating. |

I have had the same thing happen to me. She was really sweet to send me emails to see how I was doing and what was new with me. It was sort of odd but she also asked how I was doing with my program. Next thing you know she was trying to book a bunch of sessions to train me. I only booked one because I don't have the cash to pay for it and pretty much told her that. she left me alone after that |

| Weight Loss | Any1 else being called Anorexic & getting negative remarks? | Aug 13 2008 04:34 (UTC) |

Oh yeah, I was the same height and weight of you and people would always ask me what I ate and if I ate today-if I didn't want to eat something they would say you won't gain weight. I see you being at a normal weight. Perhaps you look smaller than 120 which could be why or they could be jealous-who knows, as long as you are feeling good and healthy, don't worry about others.

I saw this yesterday. Variety of things that are causing obesity. I was reading the comments to this article and lots are blaming others (gov't, healthcare, schools, fast food) which is nothing more than a scape goat in MOST cases.

| The Lounge | People OR situations that trigger you to overeat, do you avoid them or confront them? | Aug 09 2008 07:47 (UTC) |

I would find a way to confront what makes you over eat and triggers and face them. This is the longest I have consistently stayed on CC because I finally realized that if I let these emotions and feelings over take me, I just keep getting defeated and lose focus. I would have met my goal by now had I learned how to confront my problems earlier. |

Yes I have the same problem. I do like having longer legs though =) but when it comes to the upper torso-it just looks wrong and yes I look bigger from the front aswell-esp the chest and stomach. I have problems buying dresses for that reason |

I have gotten this so many times myself and it has made me fall off the wagon and made me feel super self conscious about myself and I was only about 20 pounds overweight. Please don't let her potty mouth get to you. She sounds like she's got problems. You have seen her before so maybe she's jealous that you are losing weight and looking better. Next time you see her, you should start talking about ill mannered people and see how she responds to it. It seems like people like this get some kind of high off of making people feel bad about themselves. Next time she says something, stick up for yourself =). Congratulations on your progress! |

| Weight Loss | When did you start gaining weight? | Aug 08 2008 21:09 (UTC) |
23 |
First time I gained weight was when I was about 6-7yrs old when my parents were having problems. I lost the weight in gr 9 and was super skinny. I slowly gained a little in high school and went up to 130 which was ok.College made me lose some again. This last gain has been because of an anti-depressant for anxiety and ballooned up to 150 last summer! The same time I gained weight I was also on CC and didn't understand why I was suddenly gaining so I stopped CC. I am off of this anxiety med now and lost 10 pounds with in a month of getting off of it and been consistently losing with the help of this site |

| Motivation | Cruel things people say AFTER you lose weight. | Aug 08 2008 08:46 (UTC) |

Congratulations on your weight loss. I ranted about the opposite problem where everyone seemed to pick on me when I got fat and it really bothered. I do remember when I was thin, people would pressure me to eat fatty foods at the time. I personally don't think it's anyone's business when it comes to what you are eating or how you look nor force you to eat. 2 years ago when i was thin, I had a co-worker come up to me and was very rude when she asked me why I was not eating anything at a work party. I told her I was not hungry but the reality of it was my cholesterol was high and practically everything that was being served had some sort of cheese on it but I did eat a few appetizers that were healthy before she arrived. She kept on me, trying to make me eat something. I personally didn't want to let anyone know about my cholesterol problem (to me this was my personal issue that I did not need to share) so just to shut her up, I ate a whole lot of cheesy, fattening foods. In other words she had control over me and likely attained some sort of satisfaction from it. I would say people are more jealous of you than anything. Please do not give them the satisfaction of putting you down. I have found if you are too fat you get picked on more but also when you are too thin. It's a no win-win situation so just please yourself and ignore others. |

definetly. if not that goal maybe a little less. for people who have a lot of weight to lose might lose a lot more than 2 lbs a week from what I have seen. so you might lose 20 in the first 2 weeks just from counting calories. welcome to CC |
