I'm a senior in college, and I had a really hard time learning to eat healthy when I was doing the whole Food Service thing as well as after I started living on my own. Just a couple weeks ago I did an interview for our student newspaper about a student who has lost about 78 pounds using Weight Watchers while still being on a meal plan; she was really adamant that using Food Service had helped her lose weight rather than caused her problems. You can read the story at this link -- I think it's incredibly inspirational (and not just because I wrote it :) ). http://www.universityregister.org/index.php?o ption=com_content&task=view&id=240&am p;Itemid=31 The student also has a website with a page of tips and tricks she had learned. I've found them very helpful as I've kept working on my own weightloss goals. You can read those at this link: Success Tips and Tricks I hope that helps! |

| Foods | cooking for one | Mar 07 2007 16:40 (UTC) |

| I've been doing exactly as these guys have, making a regular sized recipe and portioning it out into servings and then freezing it. It works really well! Whenever I go to cook something like rice or meat, I always try to cook at least two servings of it so that I have something ready made and quick to eat (I'm a college student, so that is huge). Plus, this is a lot cheaper than frozen means :) I also tend to eat a lot of sandwiches, which are easy to make. I guess the trick is just to think ahead a little bit and get used to eating the same dish a few meals in a row :) | |||

| I completly understand. I too love my roommates, but it's hard to make healthy choices with them sometimes. They love to go out to eat and always ask me to come with. At first I felt really weird saying no, and I felt guilty about it, like I was disapointing them because I didn't want to hang out even though I do love spending time with them, it was just the food. But, it's gotten easier, and they've started to get used to my food choices more and more. You just have to stand up for yourself and do your best, even when it feels weird. Go to the gym, but if she doesn't want to come then don't bother her about it. Do you best to resist candy, but honestly just enjoy it once in awhile if it fits in with your plan for the day. It's really hard at first, but it does get easier :) Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Questions about calories and tea (as two different topics) | Feb 10 2007 01:09 (UTC) |

| I always count tea in my daily water intake. If you're drinking tea with no caffiene, then that is defintly not a problem (just make sure to log if you use regular sugar or something with calories as a sweetner). I think the question comes with caffinated teas. Personally, I still count tea with caffiene like water (because I think the caffiene is so minimal compared to other drinks), but others might disagree. There was a post about this awhile ago, but I'm not sure where to find it. |

| Thanks everyone, I appreciate your comments! I figured that pilates and yoga alone wouldn't be enough, it was just seeing how much cardio was needed in addition. I think I'll see how this goes, and then bump up the cardio in the next couple weeks depending on results and such. You're right though, pilates is such a great strength workout -- it always surprises me how much work it is! |

| This is another crock pot soup recipe I adapted. Chicken and Broccoli Soup It's 305 calories per serving and gets an A grade! Like the Minestrone I posted earlier, the recipe is high in sodium, but if you use low sodium broths and such it should be just fine. I just couldn't get the low sodium versions to show up in the recipe, so oh well. I'm excited, it turned out really well! |

| I just made Potato Minestrone in my slow cooker, and it turned out fantastic! I had some big servings, but if you cut down on the serving I think the cals would be a little lower. This recipe is super high in sodium, but just sub some healthy request broths or low sodium beans and I think it will help :) | |||

| Cool, thanks for posting the info about the group ali! What does your new haircut look like? I had my one day eating out this week, so I'll be super healthy the rest of the week. I think I may paint my nails tomorrow for some pampering, and try to cut back on my sugar a little more. Missy -- I want to feel great too... hopefully this helps :) |

| Good morning everyone! Couple of thoughts for the group this morning...
1) missy or ali, I think you should post part of missy's journal entry that got this whole idea started at the top of the thread, just so people know where the idea came from and what we're all trying to do since so many new people are joining the idea! 2) kimanne -- I found this link about getting more fiber, from Hungry Girl. I hope it helps! 3) I forgot that Friday at the office is free donut breakfast day! I got to the cafeteria to put my salad for lunch in the fridge and was confronted with tables and tables of donuts... boo! After some thought, I decided that I like donuts a lot and this was the last time I could get them for free, so I choose the smallest and least frosted of the bunch, and also took a banana for good measure. I'm going to save the donut for my morning snack, and hopefully I will do well the rest of the day. Not the best start ever, but it's only Day 1 for me. Have a wonderful day! |

| I know I missed the first wagon post, but hopefully I can join up now :)
Most importantly, how are you feeling: A little tired, a little worn out, but super excited for the weekend! Are you having problems in anything: Eating junk when I'm not hungry, just because it is there. Something to do with being home that just makes me want to eat whatever is around... mostly food I'm too cheap to buy when I'm at school :) Are you motivated to reach your goals? Yes, I think so, I just have to stay on track Are you having problems in certain areas of exercise? Ummm, mostly just general laziness from being at home and not at the gym. I have a yoga and pilates tape I've been trying to do in my room, but I just keep skipping it :-P Give me one thing that you have learnt in 2006 that has and will inspire you throught 2007? (no joking around on this one, wanna here the honest truth) That you can do anything or eat anything in moderation, and that being healthy truly does make me feel better about myself. What you put in your body is important, how you treat your body is important, and making sure it is healthy is the most important of all. |

| Weight Loss | am I eating too little? | Dec 12 2006 03:42 (UTC) |
6 |
| It would help if you posted some information about yourself in your profile, but without knowing anything I would say you're eating way to little. 1200 is usually the bare minimum number of calories a female should eat, 1500 for a male. If 1450 is the reccomended number from this website, then that is probably the amount you're recomended to eat, not the number you're supposed to take 500 from for your deficit. You can try another website to check this number by figuring out what your BMR (Base Metabolic Rate, I think) is, at this website (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ ) and then taking your deficit from there. As for eating more, try eating more high-calorie foods, then you don't feel like you're eating more but you get more calories. Really, that few calories is not healthy, so please try to eat more. I hope this makes sense! |

| Weight Loss | calories and carbs... help please! | Dec 10 2006 01:01 (UTC) |

| I think it would be helpful if you filled out your profile so people could get to see more about you more easily! When we're younger (I'm only 20), our metabolisms naturally work a lot faster than older people. Even at 20, my metabolism has slowed down much more than yours at 15. Younger people should generally eat more than the 1200 calories (1200 is essentially a bare minimum amount). I'm not sure how much more, but if you used the tools on the site I think it would help you figure that out more easily. I think if you just want to be healthier, doing some exercises to tone up and making sure you eat a well-balanced diet (the right amounts of fruits, veggies, meats, etc.) will be great. I know a lot of people wished they had started being healthier when younger, so kudos for you in doing that! I think lanacits is right -- if you talk to your mom about it in that context she might be more receptive :) Good luck! |

| I did sort of the same thing you did. The only way I could find to get myself to be more healthy was to be extreme about it, and then slowly add foods and such back in as I got better at being healthy. So, lots of people will do it gradually, but I had to do an all-or-nothing approach, similar to what I think you're doing. It took me awhile to see results too, something like 3 months before I saw any weight loss, which I think is a little rare. But, even before I started seeing a change on the scale I found myself feeling healthier, craving healthy foods instead of junk food, being able to go longer and longer on the treadmill, and losing inches around my waist and legs. There was one day where I got super excited because when I poked my calves I didn't feel them jiggle -- they were all muscle! So, instead of focusing on the scale so much I think it is helpful to try and find other measures of success so that you don't feel like giving up. And second what shime said, make sure you are eating enough. Just continue to be healthier, be patient, and you will start to see changes soon. Good luck!! |

| I usually just log water by hand, putting in "Water, 12oz" into the subject line, and then just putting in 1 calories. It doesn't give it a nutrition grade, and it doesn't seem to affect my grade at all as far as I can tell. I hope that makes sense :) As for searching by grade, I don't think you can do that specifically. When you search foods you can sort them by grade, but I myself don't know of a way to just look at all A foods of all types. |

| Yes, this site is extreemly helpful! I've been counting calories for about 3 months now, and although I haven't seen a ton of weightloss, I am getting much healthier. The people on the site are extreemly supportive, there are some great tools like the journals, and if anything it's a very convenient way to log calories each day. I agree with kathygator -- cutting out a food group isn't going to lead you to long-term weightloss. Instead, learning to eat healthy meals, a balanced diet, and incoporate exercise are the best ways to get healthy, and if you're lucky, thin too. If I had started to be more healthy at 17 I wouldn't be where I am now either :) Good luck andirhean! |

| I log my water by putting it in myself, like you put in a food that isn't in the database. I just call it "Water, 12 oz" or whatever, and then give it 0 calories and 0 weight. CC doesn't give it a grade, and then it's just logged in with my calories. Let me know if that doesn't make sense :) |

| Motivation | Ugh... Having a problem with eating enough | Nov 30 2006 22:55 (UTC) |

| I think adding things like cheese or peanut butter to your diet is a great idea. They are both pretty healthy, in moderation, and add more calories to your diet. Nuts are great too. You could try adding milk to all of your meals, that is one way I get healthy calories without feeling more full. Perhaps some lean meat at breakfast or a little bigger helping of cereal for breakfast? Pasta is another food that can have a lot of calories in it, I like whole wheat pasta myself. Or cottage cheese, that's good too. Umm, that's all I can think of for the moment, but hopefully that helps! |

| Weight Loss | is this true? What do you think? | Nov 30 2006 22:50 (UTC) |
2 |
| I agree with Jayd... 1000 calories a day simply isn't enough for people to function, so I although someone might be able to make it a habit I think it would be a very bad idea. From my experience, learning to be healthier has become a habit in the few months I have been on this site. I simply can't eat as much as I used to be able to eat, and some of the foods I used to love are simply too much fat and grease to eat without feeling sick to my stomach. I mean, I've never been able to eat a lot of food, but now I have to stop after 1 or 2 pieces of pizza because I'm just full. So, while I'm not doing anything drastic like 1000 calories a day, I have started to eat less because of my much healthier habits. I hope that makes sense :) |
