I use Truvia in my hot tea, only half a packet, though. Splenda and I don't get along too well, plus the taste is really distinctive to me. Truvia is stevia, specially formulated to taste its best. I likes it :) I actually like it more than sugar in my tea now.

Maybe you feel the loss of your weight-loss buddy, too. You won't really be able to talk about your struggles in the same way anymore. Though you will both still have struggles, they will be different. Maybe you could find some other friends to talk to about losing weight naturally. Maybe you could get yourself into a support system like weight watchers, or make some friends at a Curves. I think having friends with similar goals really helps us succeed. It sure makes working out more fun to have a buddy there with you.

I had a friend who got gastric bypass surgery, and we pretty much stopped hanging out after that. Her life changed drastically, and we had a lot less in common. After she lost 100+ lbs, she lived it up a little, partying and being social with new friends (I think this happens a lot with rapid weight-loss) but has settled back down now and is starting a family.

Her weight-loss was rapid, but it wasn't easy. She had to be very careful about what foods she ate or she would vomit, or not get enough nutrition. Her hair fell out a lot, and she was miserable for a lot of it. It's not an easy fix, and even with lap band, there can be serious complications.

Try not to be jealous. There are always skinnier people around us. There are always people who have it easier than we do. There are also people who are bigger and have it harder. It's really not about them, it's about you. What can you do to be the most successful achieving your goals? How can you stay healthy and lose the weight? What would help you stay on track?

If you need a buddy on here to talk with, let me know. I have been struggling to loseabout 60 lbs since September 06. I have lost 23 lbs and stalled (I think in part due to hormone BC which I am off of now). I still have a long way to go, and I want to be fit and strong! I hope you are feeling better about the whole situation now. Just remember, everyone else's success or failure has nothing to do with your own.

This sounds like a good challenge. Is it only for man-made sugary things or all things sugary, like fruit and fruit juice? I think I will go off the man-made sugary things for one month - til October 5th.

I had a teacher in high school that went off sugar for a month and after the month was over, he didn't want sugary stuff, anyway. That'd be handy, huh?

I'm definitely eating the home-grown watermelon my mom is bringing me tomorrow from her garden, though. I could do without cookies and cake and candy, though.

Definitely. It doesn't take long to stretch it back out, though. If I eat only small portions for 2 days, it becomes uncomfortable to eat larger portions that I would have easily been able to eat, plus some a few days earlier. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Health & Support IUD Stories: need help deciding which one please! Aug 22 2009
20:31 (UTC)

I just had my Mirena removed 3 days ago after having it for 5 years. I had it inserted about 5 weeks after having my 2nd child, and it didn't hurt, only mild cramping afterward. I had break-through bleeding for about the first year, but  then had almost no periods for the next 4 years.

My strings disappeared back into my cervix about a month in, and they used an ultrasound to make sure it was still in my uterus, which it was, so they just left it alone. When it came time to remove it, I was really nervous because of the lack of visible strings, but it only took a minute for the doctor to find it with a grasping instrument and pull it out almost painlessly.

The IUD affected me differently through the progression of its useful life. At first I had a significant loss in libido, which subsided after a couple years. I was fine in the middle, but toward the end I started having a lot of anxiety and mood swings and depression. I cried at the drop of a hat, was lethargic, obsessed about food... like being pregnant. Once it was out, I felt happier, more energetic, and I don't think about food til my stomach growls.

I thought I was fine on the IUD. I really didn't want to get pregnant again after having 2 kids in less than a year, and the Mirena seemed like the best choice. I had no idea that the low hormone dose would affect me so much. It was such a gradual thing that I didn't really know it was happening until it stopped. I feel SO free now!

For the record, I am using the Billings ovulation method for delaying pregnancy until we move and are ready for #3. It's 98% effective and has been practiced world-wide since the 70's, including developing countries. I ordered the CD from here:http://faf-store.stores.yahoo.net/index.html to learn how to do it and so I would have the software on my computer. It's very simple once you learn it.

Pregnancy & Parenting Didn't lose any weight after delivery?? Jul 16 2009

I had the same experience with my first baby. It was 12 hours of labor in the hospital and they pumped me full of IV fluids. I have pictures of myself in the hospital hours after having my son and I look inflated! My face and hands were so swollen from all the fluids, I looked fatter after delivery than I did before! No worries, it will go away. If you breast feed, the weight will come off faster. I weighed 1 lb less after delivery than I did when I was admitted to the hospital to give birth!

I had mine out when IW as 8 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I had several severe attacks and ended up in the ER 3 times in a matter of weeks. Turns out my case was very bad, with involvement with the common bile duct and I ended up with pancreatitis while they were trying to flush my system with fluids to get the stone dislodged. I was SO relieved to have the pancreatitis pain gone that the surgical pain was fantastic! I even turned down post-surgical pain meds.

The only side-effect I have experienced after having it removed was that fatty foods give me the runs. It was way more sensitive at first but now it's only very fatty foods that get me. Before it was almost anything.

BTW don't eat lettuce. It causes attacks, too.

That's been my excuse for staying under the covers, anyway, lol. Maybe I will talk myself into it one of these days, it sounds great!

What is unscientific is starting at a conclusion and "finding another" model to fit it if Darwin's is not good enough.  For those who are interested in hearing the reason that many people believe in intelligent design over something from nothing evolution, I recommend you check out www.answersingenesis.com They have lots of great info explaining the creationist view and showing how unscientific (and faith-based) many evolutionist arguments are. I only post this since since someone said something derogatory about creationists (we didn't come from monkeys, etc) and I would like to show that my views ARE based on the same scientific data, interpreted differently.

Breakfast: low fat strawberry yogurt (lighter than my usual breakfast, but it was a late snack before lunch)

Lunch: eggs cooked in Smart Balance,  toast

Dinner: Tuna sandwich ( light tuna in water with light mayo,  boiled egg and minced dill pickle on white bread)

Snack: Fudgesicle

That's not enough, so I still need to add something. I will probably have some more yogurt and then some hot cocoa later with skim milk mmmmmm!

Ugh for the last couple days I've gone over my goal. I blame the PMS monster. Gotta blame someone, right? Anyway, not too much over and I suppose with hormones and JUST getting back to the healthy habits I forgot about for 3 months, it should be expected that I would have a couple bumps. I'm not beating myself up. I still logged my food, to my shame, but it helps me not just eat everything else in the house since I already blew it. I do better when I can see the number.

Robbie,

Weigh yourself in the morning before you eat or drink and after you use the bathroom. Enter your weight on your weight log here and it will show you if you're averaging a loss or gain or staying the same. The blue line on your chart is the weights you entered, and the green line shows the "trend" which is more accurate since, as you noticed, our weight fluctuates a lot.

Don't expect big results (or necessarily any) to show up on the scale after only 10 days. Many people don't see the scale move right away.

Have you used the tools here to figure out how many calories to shoot for each day?

I eat about that for breakfast now and I find myself having such an easier time sticking to my goal through the rest of the day. I eat 2 eggs (fried in Smart Balance) with 2 pieces of toast (dry) and a cup of skim milk for breakfast, and it's wonderful. I feel satisfied and energetic until lunch. I usually eat a lighter lunch (about 300 cal) and a bigger dinner (around 600) for a total around 1350 cal (that's my daily goal) and I'm 5'4", 166lbs, just getting back on track after the holidays.

I find that the secret for me is eating a balanced breakfast. I need my protein, carbs, fat and dairy to feel my best, but I can do ok as long as i have protein and a little carbs.

svmom,

Sorry you'fe feeling ill. I think Mucinex with the cough suppressant is AWESOME stuff. I took some of my kid's Mucinex cough syrup with the cough suppressant out of desparation and it worked SO well. I only took a kid's dose and it worked just fine. It really broke up the crud in my chest right away and made me stop coughing. Great stuff, wish I had found it sooner.

Zicam cold remedy (nasa gel... the edible ones are nasty.) is also great, but works best if you take it when you first get symptoms.

As for what to do, well I don't bother to work out at all when I'm sick except to do the "health bouce" on my rebounder (gently bouncing with your feet still on the mat for 2 minutes an hour to flush lymph and raise your white cell count) because I just get too tired too quickly. it's ok to have a couple maintenance days when you're sick. Take it easy and get some rest. You can pick up where you left off in a few days.

As for me, I weighed myself first thing this morning and the scale said 166, which isn't too bad! My last weigh-in before this was 160 on October 16th, and I haven't been counting calories at all since then, AND I am retaining water right now from hormones, so I'm guessing I only really gained about 3-4lbs over that time. I can live with that.

I'm back on track now and loving it. :) I can't wait to drop another pant size. I bought myself some new workout pants and some resistance bands so I'm all ready to go now :) I also have a new workout video I borrowed from my mom to try out. Maybe I'll try it tonight.

mmmmm crock-pot soup! I like to make veggie-beef soup in the crock pot. Making my mouth water just thinking about it. :) Maybe this weekend. It's pretty low-cal too!

Good job, guys!

I haven't given myself a proper weigh-in yet. I keep forgetting. AND yesterday my husband was off work and I totally didn't count calories. I couldn't since we went out for lunch at a place that doesn't give out nutritional info. I did count on Tuesday and worked out on Monday and Tuesday. I'm logging my calories today and feeling great! I'm hoping to get a workout in this evening.

BTW at my "informal" weigh-in (in the evening, after eating and fully clothed) I was 169. I'm also retaining water, so hopefully in a week or so that number (buck naked and first thing in the morning after peeing) will go down, lol.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you guys better. I really need a place to check in to keep me accountable.

This is so stupid. Parents need to be responsible. Is there a cheap, easy way to test for lead? If so then make it available to parents so they can test their children's own toys. Next thing you know there will be a law limiting the length of shoe laces so as to prevent us from unnecessary risk of tripping over our own feet. Give me a break. Yes, new toys should be tested, but if it extends to re-sales of used toys, that's just ridiculous.

Think about all the toys that would end up in a land-fill instead of ina new, loving home. I can't believe environmentalists wouldn't raise a stink about that. Actually, by all rights, shouldn't we have to test for lead before we throw it away into a landfill?

Tomorrow I will weigh myself properly. Time to get back to work.  Nice to meet you all, I'll post a more detailed intro later, I have a sleeping baby on one arm right now. hey guys, I've been AWOL for a while... but I'm still here. I've been maintaining and not exercising. It's TTOTM so I'll weigh myself again in a few days. I haven't been counting calories at all, but I logged everything so far today. I guess friday will be the day I weigh myself. I have been weighing here and there and fluctuate between 160 and 164, it seems, but that's normal for me. Stupid hormones.

I got a LONG over-due hair cut yesterday! SO happy to have 4" less hair! And even with the huge pile of hair that was behind me on the floor when all was said and done, my hair is still 2" past my collar bone. I probably would have gone much shorter if not for my husband's attachment to my hair, lol.

I also managed to finish a baby blanket for my niece while I was away. Still love knitting, but I've noticed that while it keeps me from eating constantly, it also keeps me from exercising! When I have free time I want to knit, when before I used to squeeze workouts in when I could. Cruel world! Why?! *cries* I so love knitting, but I have to cut way back on it or I'll never get any exercise done. *cries some more*

I've gone from working out 4 times a week to ZERO for the past 2 months! It's gotta stop. Knitting is like crack. Just don't even go there, ladies. Put the needles down and walk... or run away.

I have been distracted this week and haven't logged a single day, but I'm still only 160.5, which is fine and a normal fluctuation for me. I know I haven't eaten enough to have actually gained this week, I keep a mental log even when I don't log on CC, and I'm fairly sure I was just maintaining or at a tiny deficit. Oh well, back on board today. Funny how we all seem to be on the same weird cycle of being bums at the same times.

Lady, what yarn are you using? It sounds interesting and I need some yarn for a baby blanket for my baby niece.  $30 isn't bad for an afghan. I've spent $80 on yarn for an afghan before. I don't have much discretionary money these days, but knitting is my crack, lol. As for sticking with it, well I didn't stick with it very well. I kept getting off track for months at a time and while I only fluctuated slightly, I wasted a lot of time basically maintaining. But I'll never go back to being unconscious of the calories in my food. I know too much now to be ignorant anymore. Part of why I've gotten off track so many times is that my weightloss has been very slow even when I stick to it. I think it migh have something to do with my hormones since I have this wacky IUD that keeps me from ovulating and menstruating regularly. It expires in August, and I'm gonna be glad to see it go, I think. Pregnancy tends to interfere with weightloss, too, though. Anyway, it's been a long journey so far, but I know for sure this is a lifestyle change, not just a diet, so that's a plus. I'm an optimist :)

wbbuff, Those muffins sound delicious! I wish I had new workout shoes! Mine are showing wear now since I do a lot of walking outside on asphalt.  Plus they were only $20 Reeboks to start with, 3 years ago, lol. The first 2 years I pretty much only wore them in the winter, though since I live in flip-flops  whenever possible. This year I started walking with my friend, though. Anyway, what kind of shoes did you get?

Man, I was starving while I was running around this afternoon. I think I was actually really thirsty, but at any rate, I ended up getting 2 mcdonalds cheeseburgers (at 310 calories each) for lunch/dinner. I hadn't had one in a long time so it was satisfying, except for the texture of the meat. Ew. Gristly. *puke*. Texture is a big deal to me, especially in my food. I'm just a very tactile person. So that kinda killed it for me. I won't be ordering those again any time soon, but I managed to still enjoy the 2 I had despite the gristle, which is practically a miracle for me. Anyway, I'm still below my calorie allowance for the day, so it's all good. I'll probably just eat very light at dinner and hopefully go for a 2 mile walk later tonight.

Happy Friday, everyone! Especially for me! 159.5 this morning!!!! That's the first I've seen of the 150's since I quit smoking almost 3 years ago and packed on all this weight! I was up to 184 when I started here in June, 2006, and it's taken me a long time to get out of these 160s! *yay* *does happy dance*

In other news, I'm making a lacework scarf with bamboo fiber yarn and it's soo beautiful and soft. I can't believe how simple it is to make such a complicated looking thing. It's a leaf motif and I'm doing it in a very pale green. Softest yarn I've ever felt. I'm 30 rows into it now, so about 1/10th of the way done, give or take. I hope to have it done in 2 weeks. I'll post pictures soon.

Also, my hair is driving me nuts. I don't know if it is because I'm losing weight or what but my hair is just lack-luster. And long. Really long. It's probably as long as it has ever been, which is a little past the bottom of my bra in back and I'm longing to chop it off, but my husband loves it long. I think I'll take 2" off to make it healthier looking. I wish I knew what to do with it. I wear it up a lot and I think the non-slip rubber bands I've been using have been damaging my hair, so I need to get something else now. It's 100% my natural color, not permed, I don't use heat on it except maybe once a month, ugh. Maybe I need to switch shampoos.

Anyway, I hope you all have a blessed weekend. I probably wont check back til next week.

Sorry I've been AWOL for a few days. My weekends are always busy, and then somehow, this week it got to be Thursday before I had a chance to slow down.

The awesome news is that I'm FINALLY down to 160 as of this morning. I hadn't weighed in for like 10 days because I was having my semi-anual period (thank you, Mirena) which ended monday-ish I think, and hallelujah the scale went down!

I haven't seen 160 on the scale in  years. I have been in the mid-160's for a year at least! I CANNOT wait to get into the 150s! I'm so close I can taste it!

OH and the other great news is that I have really taken to knitting and it keeps my hands and mind busy, so I forget to eat for hours at a time. Now when I  have idle time I run for my knitting bag hoping to sneak a few more rows in before I have to move onto something else. LOVE IT!

162 today, on my period and retaining crazy water. My arm still has sheet marks on it from waking up an hour ago. I'm hopeful to see that number go down once this time is over. I have a super-irregular cycle AND I have an IUD which further mystifies things since it usually makes me not bleed at all. I'm kinda happy to see aunt flo this month, in a strange way.

Anyway, wbbuff, maybe you're dehydrated from yesterday.

erika, here's the recipe I worked off of, minus the syrup. The first time I made them I accidentally bought the pumpkin pie filling with the spices already in it, instead of just canned pumpkin, and it turned out fine and I didn't have to add my own spices. The 2nd time I used plain canned pumpkin and just tossed some pumpkin pie spice in without measuring it. Today I halfed the pancake recipe on the bisquick box (not the recipe I linked above), and then added about 1/4 cup canned pumpkin, and a teaspoon of sugar and then thinned it with skim milk until it was the desired runniness. You can use 2 egg whites to replace 1 whole egg. They don't taste any different to me at all with just egg whites and skim milk. Use less pumpkin and less spices and make 1 tester pancake, and then add more of each to taste. These will brown up much darker than regular pancakes because of the pumpkin. Yummilicious!

hey, everyone! Sounds like we're all in better spirits this week, and back on track. My scale finally moved to 162.5 yesterday and then 162 today. Yay! I was starting to stress about that 164.

In other news, I have lowered my calories back down to 1200-1350. I think I'm an all-or-nothing kind of person and I stay on track better at 1200 than 1480. Plus I have a tendency to go over my goal by a hundred or so calories, so the lower the goal, the better.

I made pumpkin pancakes with chocolate chips this morning. They were delicious! It's basically the regular bisquick recipe with a little canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice. yum yum :)You can use skim milk and egg whites, and skip the chocolate chips if you want. Top with cool whip and it's like pumpkin pie! I also like them sans chips with powdered sugar on top. I love Fall!
