I like orange flavored vodka and soda water.  Soda water does not have calories but tonic does.

at 5 8 and 14 years old you should not have to worry about calories.  Eat until you are full.  You are still growing.  Just make good food choices and stay active.  I think teens need more than 1200 for their bodies because they are going through growth spurts and a lot of bodily changes at that time.  Also you are shooting for an unhealthy weight.  The BMI of 115 and 5 8 is under 18.  Talk to your family or someone that you can trust.
Foods What are low GI foods? Aug 01 2007

Rice would definitely be high GI.  I think apples would be considered low GI

GI stands for Glycemic Index.  it is the measure of how easy it is to absorb the carbohydrates into your body.  Something with high GI is made of simple sugars and causes your blood sugar to spike opposed to something with a low GI which is made of more complex sugars and does not cause your blood sugar to spike so quickly/easily.

Wikipedia has a nice website about it and a list of foods.
Health & Support Have you lowered your cholesterol with medication or foods? An Adventure! Jun 12 2007

I am 25 years old and my cholesterol is 221 but my good cholesterol is a whopping 75.  My doctor told me to lower my total/bad cholesterol by diet and excercise but I have been dieting and exercising (4-6 times a week for an hour) for 4 months  before I had it tested.  I know its genetic and I dont understand how I could lower it without raising my good cholerstrol even more.

On another subject one food that I eat a lot of is almonds.  One serving of almonds, in almond butter, raw or roasted, has been shown to raise good cholesteroll and lower bad cholesterol.  I read the study and it looked good....maybe that partly explains why my good cholesterol is so high.  I eat slivered raw almonds, about a quarter cup on my salad 5 days a week (though the studies were 7 days a week)
Fitness Jogging/running with bad knees...how do you do it? May 23 2007

Did you ever ask the physical therapist or your orthopeidic doctor if you could go running?  I understand about the money for the physical therapist.  When I started having knee problems I went to the physical therapist once.  I memorized the excerises coupled with exercises from internet searches and recommendations from those at the specialty running store that had the same problem.  Together with new running shoes I am fine.  Though problems happen every now and then when I work too hard.  Start out slow and if it hurts...stop.  And again if you have questions ask your doctor.  It took me a year to run again and it was when I finally bought the right running shoes and strenghten the right muscles that did the trick.  I had a different problem than you though (Iliotibial band syndrome).  From a quick internet search it looks like you should strenghten your quads.  here is more information   I think you should be able to run again but if your knees are hurting without running I wouldnt start running.

go to a running store and find what works for you.  Then go online and find something similar.  If you find something online that is not in the store you can ask the people at the specialty running store if those shoes would be right for your feet.  Maybe sure they are returnable though.  Finding the right shoes can be an art.  Last seasons Ipearl zumi, if you need a neutral shoe for wider feet can be bought at ipearl online for 65.  You first need to know what shoe you want.  Also it depends if you are running everyday, how long you run. etc.  If I dont wear good running shoes or wear the wrong running shoes I have horrible knee problems and cant walk but I run 4 miles 4-5 times a week.  I rather pay more so I have my health.  Running is very strenous on the joints but I love it :O)

Edit: if you wear Nikes your feet are probably narrow.
Foods Snack Tips for a Registered Chocoholic? May 14 2007

definitely I second the hershey kisses.  I used to save up calories and eat them up to my daily limit.  They were my treat for eating right during the day.  I've since diversified.  Cocovia has chocolate covered almonds (as well as other goodies) that are around 100-200 calories a pack.  100 calorie hostess chocolate cupcakes are to die for.  I also tried doing something that would gross some people out, chocolate syrup mixed in a handful of kashi go lean crunch cereal.  awesome.  My sister just introduced me to quaker minirice cakes with chocolate.  They are great and in a 90 calorie pack.  Special K chocolate cereal is good but not REALLY chocolate and has partially hydrogenated oils.  O and a good old bar of dark chocolate thrown in the freezer so I really do only eat one sqaure a day.  I get my chocolate fix every day :O)  In addition to these chocolate treats (one a day) I have chocolate carmeal nut brownie luna bars for breakfast or mid-morning snack.  Awesome and very good for you.
Foods Hosting a barbeque? May 14 2007
22:01 (UTC)
I just had a barbecue this weekend and was in charge of all the sides.  We had veggie kabobs with mushrooms, peppers, and onions brushed with just a bit of olive oil and placed on the grill.  We also grilled up asparagus similarly.  I made a tasty salsa with tortilla chips.  We also had white corn (I skip the butter but you can use I cant believe its not butter spray or similar) For dessert I made a fruit salad similar to the one I ate in Italy, any fruit but I used apples, pears and strawberries (peaches work great too!) with white wine and some sugar to taste.  It was a hit.   (I did have smores for the everyone as well :O)  I cant believe I got my family to eat so many fruit and veggies. (for the main course it was filet mignon)

In addition to only buying the small bag, sometimes when I find myself eating a whole bag of something out of control I find it best to throw it away.  Throw it away and pour soap on top (like miranda in that sex and the city episode).

I did do better last week, I upped my cardio on my normal day off and lost two pounds but then this weekend I did a little partying on Friday night and had a romatic evening with my bf on saturday (steak, wine, crabcake and key lime pie) that has set me back to where I was the beginning of last week.  I hope its mostly water weight and falls off soon.  How long does it take for water weight to come off once I drink and eat normally again?  On the bright side I did run 6 miles on Saturday morning.  That is my new record. :O)
Fitness bruises on toes from running!?!?!?! Apr 29 2007

if it is not under the nail but around the little joint there you could have sprained the ligaments/tendons in your toe.  I did that playing soccer, the bruise wrapped around the little joint in my big toe.  It hurt so bad I thought it was broken but it was just a bad sprain.  There was nothing that could be done besides wrapping my big toe before each soccer game, (I did have to use that toe to kick).

Along those lines....Luna Bar in Carmel Nut Brownie.  Divine.  I think the thing that makes them more women friendly is the folic acid that they add.  I hardly eat meat so this is supplements my protein for the day AND acts as my multivitamin.

I agree that the best brand is the best brand for you.  I cant wear nikes because it is too narrow.  I wear Pearl Zumi's but I have pretty flat feet.  I tried on a zillion shoes and even ran on a treadmill in the running store with a few of them on before I selected one that fit prefectly.

I love love chocolate almond breeze.  I am a huge chocolate fan and this does it for me.  I like it better than chocolate soy milk or even chocolate skim milk.  It is not as thick as soy milk but I would not say its watery.  I bought some and it was gone in two days...so good.  I dont know about the other flavors though.

here is what I do, by quick I hope you mean results and not time because I probably spend 25 minutes on it 4 times a week.
everything is 15 (X3) reps
everything is with 10 pound hand weights (but deadleg lifts is 15 pounds)
lunges
squats
sumo squats (point toes outward and open your stance)
straight leg dead lifts (15 pounds)
sumo straight leg dead lifts (15 pounds)
inner thigh lifts (10 lb ankle weight)
outer thigh lifts (10 lb ankle weight)

I just added some more butt stuff
hip extensions
fire hyrants
all with ankle weight

I also like the mary winsor buns and thighs video but I really think its the weight lifting the makes a difference.

Lunges, squats dead lift, hip extensions
http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts /tp/butt.htm
 inner leg lift
http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/exercise_dis play.aspx?pageID=507
outer leg lift
(didnt find it on the internet quickly but my physical therapist taught it to me)
Like a normal lying down leg lift but point your top leg back as far back as it goods and then do leg lifts.  Apparently I have weak outer thighs/hips and by strengthening it my knee would feel better and it does!

Motivation binge-free challenge, anyone? Apr 16 2007

thanks amber.  I just have to ignore my coworkers and its true that i could have eaten a "real" lunch before I went to work rather than just a protein bar.  I realized that there are things I just cant have in my apt, string cheese, cookies and brownies.  Weekends at work at the worst because I have no control over what is in front of me.  I thought well I can have one and be ok.  It just turned into 20.  From now on I will eat before going into work.  When I binge at home now its at night and a little more healthy food, its just hard to stop once you start.  Its a compulsion to continue eating until its gone.  Totally physcological.

ok so I was just caught eating all of the 18?? cookies that were left over since Friday at work.  Sundays at work are bad enough.  Sundays at work when there is tons of food left over from the friday meeting is impossible!  I mean I brought an apple in and dinner so I was prepared but I still ate about 18 (more??) pepperidge farm cookies. AND I was caught.  By monday morning EVERYONE at work will know I ate 18(+) cookies.  I am embarrassed so now I am joining the binge free challenge.  I really need to stop this binging whether or not someone knows about it.

How do I avoid binging when the food is sitting right in front of me?

I think that its really hard to find healthy things at Qdoba and Baja Fresh.  At Qdoba just a tortilla is over 300 calories and a burrito with a tortilla, beans, rice and a little bit of cheese is like 1900 mg sodium and over 800 calories.  At baja Fresh I though ordering a salad would be fine until I got home and found out it was over 800 calories.  I think the healthiest thing would be vegertarian tacos.  Its no suprise that Qdoba is owned by McDonalds.

Fitness busy schedule?? Apr 12 2007

you dont need an hour to work out.  some of my pilates tapes are 20 minutes and kick my butt (and stomach) on days that you dont have enough time walking around in between classes  for an extra 15 minutes and doing some small routine in your room either in the morning or in the evening counts.  you dont need weights just a few pushups or crunches counts.  check out prevention mag (online) they have some routines that you can do with or without hand weights.

I eat 1500 calories a day and I still manage A grades.  I think the secret is fruits and veggies and Definitely second the protein bar but my favorite brand is luna bar.  As you can see I like chocolate but yes you can eat chocolate and still get an A.  Here is what I ate yesterday (its a little out of order).  If at the end of the day i am low on calories like yesterday I make myself a sunday with a soy  ice cream chocolate bar (taken off the stick) with strawberries and bananas and a little bit of chocolate syrup.  Yesterday I didnt have bananas so I used special K chocolate delight cereal for a little crunch.  SOOO good.

Maintaining How to stop losing weight? Apr 10 2007

I havent tried to stop losing weight yet but I would suggest using the expediture tool about and eating what you expend for instance if you were female 6'1" 173 pounds sedentary eat 1900 calories and plus what you exercise for male it would be 2300 plus what you excerise.  I would monitor your weight and see if that works.  If its hard to add calories try using nuts (almonds have been shown to lower cholesterol!) or other healthy high calorie foods.
Fitness Rapid Results Pilates Apr 07 2007

My best friend bought that one for me for my birthday.  I think you will like it although I thought it was a little too beginner for me (so it would be perfect for you) and it goes through a lot of moves.  It was the advanced toning but she also has a basics video too.  I find most videos have the same exact moves but they just explain it differently although the reason i like rapid results is that it does NOT have the "normal" pilates moves (so there is still hope for you :O)   Anyway, she got it from amazon.com.  That is where I get all my videos period.  And if you do get a combination of videos (to get free shipping or whatever), the buns and thighs is easy enough for anyone to do (even someone that has never excerised before) and it HURTS (in a good way).
Fitness Rapid Results Pilates Apr 06 2007

Having many pilates videos I think that the rapid results one is much more intense than the winsor video series.  The winsor videos seem more geared toward beginners.  I have always done pilates at home (no formal training) but I think it is important to understand form because you could hurt yourself doing things wrong (ie if you have back pain you are not doing something right) plus it is important to breathe correctly.  I would say rapid results is intermediate (and I feel like I am a mix between intermediate and beginner.  I can do some things but other things I just cant do so I use a modifier)  what is great about winser advanced toning is they have a modifer the whole time.  My first real pilates video was ana caban abs and I used the modifier on that.  Even with rapid results I use the modified (beginner) exercises that I learned on other videos.  In summary, yes you can learn at home and its easier to start with a video that explains the moves more than rapid results (with 10 minutes she cant really tell you how to do much) and that has a modifier doing the beginner position or a video made for beginners.  But I will concede that is probably ideal to learn in a class or with an instructor (i just dont have the money for that).
I just want to add that when I first started pilates my abs hurt for days!  But now they look beautiful :O)
