Fitness Question to all runners! Oct 23 2008

I'm going to jump in here and answer the original posters question.  I run all winter outside in tempratures down to -20 or so.  You can do it if you dress right for it.  I wear long pants and usually under armor compression shirts under a long sleve shirt.  I also recomend a ski mask or something similar for the really cold days.  A trick I learned in football when I was about 12 years old is to wear pantyhose under your sweat pants on really cold days.  It sounds goofy but it works great.  I trained for a spring marathon all winter long last year and got in 50-60 miles a week outside and never set foot on a treadmill (I hate treadmills).  Give your body about 4 or 5 minutes to warm up and the pain from the bitter cold will go away, after that it's easy.

I would say that the average pace is somewhere around 9:00 mile.  That would be 1:58:00 time for a half marathon.  Don't worry about where you place compared to everyone else, just try and better your own times and have fun.

Most races do have a time limit, but don't be worried.  Almost anyone can finish, even if they are walking, within the time limit.  I would recomend you run at least one shorter distance race before you run a half marathon.  As far as training goes, you need to decide what your goal is and then train for it.  If you just want to finish, you will not need to train as hard as if you want a certian time or pace.  Check out runnersworld.com or coolrunning.com for some training schedules.

I am a competitive runner and I eat about 3500 - 4000 calories a day to maintain my body weight.  I typically run 50 - 60 miles a week and bicycle 80 - 100 miles a week.  I do strength training twice a week, with sets of 20 reps and low weights.  I hope this helps.

Fitness Bad runs, and running in the morning? Aug 18 2008
19:27 (UTC)

Everyone who runs has bad days once in a while, don't let one bad run discourage you.  I like to run in the morning before eating breakfast.  I drink a little water before I go.  In the summer months it is just too hot to run in the afternoon or evening, and I have family commitments anyway so I start running before anyone (including the sun) is up.  Make sure you are getting enough sleep.  Lack of sleep can really throw your running off.

Fitness Runners- anyone run a training run faster than their race PR? Aug 18 2008
19:22 (UTC)

Something to think about is that your training runs of 3 miles may not be actually 3 miles long.  A race usually is certified distance, at least most of the bigger races are.  You could be running 2.8 miles and not knowing it on your training route.  I like to take the day off before a race.  Some people take the day 2 days before a race off and do a short easy run the day before, but that's just personal preference.  The McMillan calculator is just an estimate of how fast you can run, it can vary quite a bit depending on how many miles a week you put in.  I run one day of intervals and one day of temp runs a week, then 3 days easy and one day long, and one day rest.  Keep up the speed work and remember to rest one or two days a week and your times should come down.

We have the same situation at my house, I'm the fitness fanatic and my wife wants to work out with me but can't keep up.  We have found a few things that work.  She rides her bike next to me while I run sometimes.  We take the whole family to the school track and then everyone can run at their own pace.  My son Alex just ran his first 1 mile race (he's six years old).  My oldest boy runs races with me a lot too.  The other 2 haven't quite gotten into it yet.  You can also lift weights together.  He may be able to lift a lot more weight than you, but it is easy to adjust the weight between sets for each person, everyone who lifts with a partner does that anyway.  Comming from the guys point of view, I would recomend you let him have his own work out time too because sometimes you just want to push yourself as hard as you can.  Another idea would be to let him go for an hour or two without you and then you could join him when he is tired.

It's been a long time since I posted, is anyone still out there?  I just got home from a 5K race in a nearby town.  I ran a personal best time of 20:45.  I felt great about my time, but I was a little disapointed in my finish place.  The guy organising the race sent out personal invitations to all the fast runners in the area, the guy who won ran a 17:30.  I guess I should feel good however because I did get an invitation :)  My next race will be on September 8th in Hamburg Iowa.  It's called the tri-state 10,000.  It is a 10K that runs into Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri.  I was born in Hamburg, and grew up in a nearby town in Missouri, so it will be a lot of fun going back.  I will get to see some family as well.  Everyone have a great night, and happy running.

The not showering thing is a normal part of rasing boys.  There is somewhere between age 10-14 that they will just refuse to take showers.  My oldest is in that phase now.  What really gets me is when it is laundry day and there is only one pair of dirty underwear in the laundry for the whole week.  It is frustrating because they are not little kids anymore and you don't feel like you should have to tell them to shower, or change their underwear, but you still do anyway.  Just wait a few years when he discovers girls and he will be in the shower every day twice or three times.  I grew up in a house with 4 of us teenage boys, and it seemed like there was never enough hot water.  I don't know how my parents paid the food bill either.

I guess they could be out of the large size right now.  It kind of is a roll of the dice, because they are mostly left over socks from races and events.  I am a size 10 shoe as well, and I prefer the large size socks, but I have bought the medium before and they are a little snug but they work.  Just try back in a month or so and see if they have any large then.

Hi everyone.  I've been on vacation this week so i'm kind of taking it easy on the work out schedule.  I've gotten in a few good runs.  It's kind of fun to run in different places than you are used to.  i saw some people posting about blisters on their feet and I would recomend getting some good socks if you don't have them already.  I like the brand Coolmax Defeet.  You can get them for about half price from Amazon.com, the only catch is that you don't know what design they will be untill you get them.  They are usually left overs from races or other events, but it's kind of fun not knowing what you are going to get anyway.  I've never gotten anything I didn't like.  Well, I hope everyone has a good rest of the week, and keep on running.

I eat a power bar before I run in the morning.  I get better performance than not eating anything at all.  After I run or workout I eat the rest of my breakfast.

Well, I took my son to his first race on Saturday.  It was a kids one mile.  He ran it in 8:29 and got second place overall and first in his age group.  It was a pretty small race, but we had a lot of fun.  I ran the 10K and got second overall and also second in my age bracket.  It seems that the 30-35 age bracket is always the hardest.  I've done some research and found that is true, I guess our bodies are at their peak for running somewhere from late 20's to late 30's.  I would have thought it to be the early 20's.  Anyway we had a good weekend.  Got an easy pace 6 mile run tomorow morning and the kids are at their grandparents so my wife can go with me on the bike.  Best go get some sleep.
