| Weight Loss | My Mum. Please help me to advise her correctly. | Jul 25 2008 08:31 (UTC) |
|
| loulou2008>> You must have read my mind. I was planning to update tonight..., so far she has lost 4 lbs. The weight is steady now, but a medication change seems to be retaining water. Lost an inch on the waist rather than weight, so improving slowly.
Based on experience it will be later thsi year that the metabolism is repaired fully to gain the benefits of the program. morrighu>> Thank you for your post, but using the tools on here which have helped me to successfully lost 28 lbs of fat in 2 years at sedentary the maintenance is 1900. Consume a max of 1500 cals? Trying to repair a metabolism at the moment, so a small deficit is the aim. I had thought the weight would increase, but after an initial jump it has disappeared. The foot choices of my mum are excellent, and far superior to mine. Just not enough food had been consumed, and that was the way forward. I would never touch weight watchers, especially when I know so many people that have had success from following the CC recommended program. To me weightwatchers is like employing an accountant to calculate your finances.... :) |

| Fitness | would you hire a quiet personal trainer? | Jul 01 2008 13:19 (UTC) |

| As a quiet person and knowing my fair share of quiet people, we tend to be methodical in opur approach and take a genuine interest in learning to achieve better knowledge.
At a guess, if you ask a question your trainer is unsure of, he will research and read up to give you an answer when you next meet. Louder people will tend to waffle or make stuff up that sounds belieable. As a quiet person that seeks facts for an arguement I would stick with him if the above is right and you feel comfortable. |

I don't get it.... How could you have such a lousy diet when so many people on TV (athletes) didn't? |

| Stenwa>> it's not about numbers all adding up to a precise amount at the end of the day.
It is if your deficit is constantly over 1000... Nail biting over numbers? It's just a case of grabbing a banana... The OP should be praised for looking to meet a safe target and after advice in achieving it. The OP is talking of eating too little in teh day, so am confused why you are talking about over-eating. |

| Weight Loss | Oh My...IN excess of 4000..... | Jun 24 2008 07:58 (UTC) |

| skierdude>> You really shouldn't be logging in things like driving and taking kids places. Those are usually included in your sedentary activity (hence the reason why they added 300 extra calories).
Hmmm...., so my driving 5 hours a day should not be included? Using the sedentary thing for me personally is a pointless exercise. Best to add everything in from scratch for a true reflection. helpless>> how is it possible to gain when you have such a big deficit? i just don't get it. Your body through evolution has evolved to note that when you are not consuming enough calories in a period of time that there is a food shortage and makes your body hold onto all fat resources at the expense of keeping you from tiring. When you then eat a large meal, the body still thinks there is a food shortage and stores everything as fat whilst keeping you tired. Slowly you increase in weight whilst the body waits for the famine to end, adding everything you eat into fat stores. Think of it this way... You can't borrow money, but you want a holiday. You have no savings, but an income.... You believe the holiday is $500 and you have 10 weeks to save. Therefore you note you must save $50 a week. Through the ten weeks you give up a night out or clothes which makes you miserable, but come 10 weeks later you have $500. It is only then you find the holiday is actually $400, and you now have an excess $100 which you can lose. |

| Fitness | Why are there never any guys on the elliptical? | Jun 19 2008 13:07 (UTC) |
20 |
| Maybe it's because I go to a university gym, and all the males there are so hyped up on themselves, but I have never seen a man under the age of 45 jump on the elliptical, and rarely on the step machines.
Why is it I do not see women squatting weights at my gym? I guess they are so ashamed that they struggle to lift the weight. Why can't the answer be that the guys are choosing a different exercise that performs the task of an eliptical and something else. |

Sedentary
Where is the problem? Exercise - you don't exercise regularly Exercise - you participate in light exercise or take long walks Exercise - you exercise several times a week and push yourself pretty hard Exercise - you participate in physical sports such as jogging or mountain-biking each day |

Cheers for the links which I shall digest when I have sufficient time. I am aware you have not stated this, but in case others are reading.... I am not challenging you, other than to learn myself. The only way when at my knowkedge level is to quote others and look for a challenge in return. I work in the financial aspect of construction and easily travel 4000 miles a month just getting to and from work before doing my 9-5 (inevitably becomes 8-6 though), and although stressed at many times, have never considered it detrimental to my weightloss program. Thank you and hope to come with a counter arguement or a thank you for aiding in my learning :) |

| Weight Loss | How much weightloss can I expect? | Jun 18 2008 15:01 (UTC) |

| Leiela. I stuck your stats (age at 25) into the BMI thing.... You are at 21.3. That is a HUGE reason you are not seeing the 8lbs coming off as you would expect... There is most likely little fat to lose, and your body is holding onto anything and everything to keep you healthy.
Sorry on the loose skin though (dieting wouldn't be a great help?).... I do not know what to advise, but I know there are threads on here to assist. |

| mode but after 8weeks of eating at 1,300-1,400 calories you'd assume that it would get the hint
I hate to rain on your parade here, but it took 9 months for my body to recover fully from being in starvation mode. I had been having a deficit of 1500 sun-fri and over indulged to the tune of 4000 on a saturday for 6 years mind! |

| 1,200 calories is the minimum to maintain brain function, the heart beat, repiratory system etc...
The only way a lower amount would exist is if the brain was absent (appears to be with some users) or there is no heart (often the case with myself). :) |

| Leiela.... How can you say that maths is not the answer?
3500 cals = 1lb of fat. This is proven. It is not maths that should be questioned it is one or all of the following occuring. 1. Not calculating calories consumed correctly. 2. Not counting calories burned correctly. 3. Body coming out of or still in starvation mode. 4. Water retention. Think alond money... You place £10 each week in the bank. You have saved £40, but you may have £42 (due to interest) or £38 (due to a bill going out). That fact that you place 4 x £10 in the bank doesn't equal £40 is not a maths issue on 4 x 10. :) |

| Mellor>> Wow... That really does not fit in with my understanding of anything. I believe you as 99% of what you say is correct and 1% an educated guess...
I am a very facts and figures person. If something starts at x it will always be x unless you change it. Therefore my mentality is if I burn 500cals using 20lbs, I always will burn 500 cals. Going to take some digesting! wow.... I do not want to build too much muscle, so probably maintain the weight for muscle, and add a new exercise or work for longer... Cheers |

Let me understand what you are saying... At present I burn 500 cals per hour from lifting my weights. As time passes I get used to this routine, so soon I will only burn 480. As I continue the same routine, eventually I only burn 200 calories. That doesn't sound right to me. On the same idea, a marathon runner that has performed the same exercise most their lives will not burn very many calories (?). |

| jlgonzales1 - "Stress has proven to make you carry more fat around your stomach and thigh areas."
Do you have any supporting evidence for this other than something yuo heard once? All I can find is stress affects your mental attitude to weightloss which can be altered.
Stress & Weight Loss Stress is one of the most overlooked risks to our health in our daily life. Stress is so hazardous to our health that it can actually kill us. When our body is under stress it releases a higher level of adrenalin to help your body cope with the stressful situation. When the adrenal glands produce more adrenalin your metabolism increases as well, to prepare your body for stress. Another substance released into your blood stream when your body is under stress is Cortisone. Cortisone is also being released by the adrenal glands adjacent to the kidneys. http://www.teamflex.com/weight_loss_lifestyle /stress.asp cortisol works on a different timetable. Its job is to help us replenish our body after the stress has passed, and it hangs around a lot longer. "It can remain elevated, increasing your appetite and ultimately driving you to eat more," says Epel. http://www.weightlossmd.com/can_stress_cause_ weight_gain.asp |

| Persafani. Surely the workout would be just as effective for me whether I find 3 sets of 10 reps difficult or easy. I will still burn the same number of calories and maintain the muscle I have.
Kindly correct if I am wrong here. I am not looking to bulk up any more than where I am presently, so increasing weights would not be in my interest other than going "yay! go me.... I can now lift x". Cheers :) |
