================ **all participants, please read** Also, to the rest of the participants, just give me a weekly total, not day by day as I will only be updating the totals once a week (usually by Monday PM at the latest). So, for example, the first full week of September is 9/2 through 9/8, so on Sunday the 9th (or Monday the 10th at the latest), you will post how much water you drank from the 2nd to 8th. On Sunday, the 16th (or Monday the 17th) you will give me your total for the week of 9/9 through 9/15 ... and so on. For the first and last week of the month that are only partial weeks, only give me the days for those week that are part of September. Because they are only 1 day long, you can either:
Just let me know which option you are doing when you post your totals. |

| As you stated, you are 17 years old, which means your nutritional needs are different than those of an adult female, and usually much higher than an adult female. If you are able to seek advice from a nutritionist, you might want to do so, so they can help you figure out a dietary menu that will meet all your nutritional needs for your still-growing (maturing) body. Also, the fact you have stated you are still having issues with the "eating anything will make my gain wieght mentality", you might to also want to talk to a counselor that specializes in eating disorders, if you are not already doing so. I wish you the best of luck. |

| Health & Support | My take on the "Binge Eating Disorder" | Sep 03 2007 05:31 (UTC) |
|
I was tested twice for hypothyroid (once by my regular physician, another by an endocrinologist) and found to NOT have it, despite having most of the symptoms. Even despite the test results, I still believe that I have it, however both my doctor nor the endocrinologist will prescribe me thyroid medication and the fact that one of my results (TSH if I remember right - not 100% sure of which result) was a 3.6 which, despite reading to the contrary (I did a lot of research about it before requesting the tests) both the doctors told me that my reading was "normal" -- and the endocrinologist pretty much tried to tell me that I just needed to get more will power and control over my eating. I even went to these sites, printed out the information and brought it with me to both the doctors: TSH: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/artic le/003684.htm Hypothyroidism: http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000353.htm and http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/hyperthyro idism-000088.htm Symptoms of: http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/what_sy mptoms_of_hypothyroidism_000038_3.htm Thyroid Hormone Information & Recommendations to Help Achieve Weight Loss: http://www.nutri-linkltd.co.uk/documents/Thyr oidProtocols.pdf |

| Health & Support | This goes out to all bingers | Sep 03 2007 00:53 (UTC) |

| My binges tend to be triggered by emotional cues: depression, anxiety, stress (etc). I was diagnosed with BED (binge eating disorder) in 1994 and it's been an uphill battle with it ever since. I have learned some cognitive techniques to help control the binges or some of the triggers, but I don't think I will ever be 'free' of it. The best I can hope for is to have some sort of control on it, and be able to have 'controlled binges', if that makes sense. |

| Weight Loss | just want to stop this cycle | Sep 02 2007 22:51 (UTC) |
4 |
You need to tell your nutritionist and psychologist the truth, about what you are doing, because you are in a bad cycle right now and you may need some help from them. Part of the reason you are binging may be because your body is NEEDING the food. Taking the laxatives and then undereating is NOT good, and is only going to lead to more cycling between binging and starving AND bring about health problems, if you aren't already having them. Please, I urge you, for your own health and safety, tell the doctors you are seeing. |

| Weight Loss | Nobody you don't know really cares whether you're overweight | Sep 02 2007 22:05 (UTC) |
18 |
Nobody cares what you look like in a bathing suit. Nobody cares about the spider veins on your legs. Nobody cares if you can't spend 30 minutes on the treadmill at the highest speed.
Even at the age of 42 I *still* get demeaning remarks and looks thrown my way - by men, by women, by young people, by older people. It's hard to believe "nobody cares what you look like" when how I look is what incites these people to respond this way. It's been like this ALL my life, even when I wasn't this far overweight. It has gotten way beyond the point that even if I told myself "nobody cared", the looks and sneers and comments I get is enough to deter me from doing anything or going anywhere or really loosening up and enjoying myself and life. And am I imagining it? No. One day we were at the 7-11, putting gas in the car. I was wiping the windows down while my husband was putting the gas in - my oldest son (who is now 18 years old) was sitting in the car, windows rolled down. A car of 20-something guys drove by (the 7-11 is at an intersection with lights) -- while they sat waiting for the light to go from red to green, all four of these "men" (I use the word "men" quite loosely here) leaned out of their windows and started screaming insults at me and pointing at me. Both my husband AND son were ready to go after the men and "defend my honor", but I told them not to, as it would not have changed how they felt or the fact the damage was already done. And when did this happen? Three months ago. So yea, hard to really believe that "nobody cares". It doesn't matter if they "know you" or not - the comments still hurt, even if their "opinion doesn't really matter at all" because I still have to live within this society and, for me, this is what society is telling me "it" thinks of me. As for family.... I had my own mother tell me that I would be single forever because "no man is going to want an obese mother of four". How do you fight that? How do you fight the fact that your mother - who is suppose to love you unconditionally - pretty much reinforces what those "nobody's" are telling you? Oddly enough I was going to write about this in my journal as this is something I've been thinking about for a while... so might just continue my "thoughts" there. |

mop has said everything I would have said... I'm in total agreement with them. That being said, each person has to find their own motivation for losing weight... for some (as stated earlier in this thread) it was seeing their spouse/partner losing weight. Personally, when I saw that my husband lost 11 lbs with NO effort, while I was struggling and kicking butt and doing everything I could just to lose *3* lbs .... no, my spouse's weight loss was NOT a motivator, in fact it made me more discouraged and upset with myself. I had to find the motivation within me, and for my own reasons. And your wife may need to do that for her. If her depression is such that it has lasted longer than 2-3 weeks, you might want to check out this Depression Assessment Quiz (or have her look it over with you). As someone who has bi-polar and has to take medication for it, the depression and anxiety CAN be quite bad and if she sees someone for it, they may be able to put her on something to help alleviate the symptoms so that she can get to feeling better about herself, and maybe start doing things for herself (to improve her health, etc). Just letting you know, if her depression has been going on for a while, most likely what she's telling you isn't "an excuse", it's how she is REALLY feeling because that's how depression makes you feel. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is why medication can sometimes help those with it, feel better and be able to function better. I wish you both the best of luck. |

| sorry... I missed yesterday ::hangs head in shame:: I wasn't around much. I wasn't feeling well and spent most of the day in bed. Something is going around the house - daughter has been home from school yesterday and today, and hubby was feeling "like crap" (his words) yesterday as well. I had weighed myself on Tuesday with no change (371.0 lbs), so.... (team 2 - shape shifters) |

| Health & Support | exercise-induced starvation mode vs. dietary starvation?? | Aug 26 2007 04:29 (UTC) |
2 |
The other little tidbit she said during that appointment that was a real eyeopener (I had brought a print out of all my logs: food, exercise, water, etc) - was that doctors and nutritionists do NOT pay attention to how much exercise you do in a day vs what you have consumed. Yes, they stress that exercise is important (and they don't dispute that), however she stated that they do not take it in to consideration when determining how many calories you have had (or should have) for the day. That if you are suppose to have about 1800 calories for the day, and you burned 400, then you have a net of 1400 - you don't "eat back" the 400 you burned because now you have made your intake up to 2200 for that day. As I said, real eyeopener and changed my whole thought processes on the dieting and food logs and everything. |

| Health & Support | exercise-induced starvation mode vs. dietary starvation?? | Aug 25 2007 19:12 (UTC) |

| I actually addressed this with my nutritionist because I was concerned as I would be eating about 1600 cals/day but what I burned throughout the day with activity and exercise brought me below the 1200 cals/day suggested minimum. The way she explained it to me is this: What you take in for the 1200 cals/day (for your body's "needs") is immediate as it is taken directly from what you consume for that day. The "calories" your body uses to burn for activity and exercise is actually from the stored fat and NOT from your consumed calories for the day, so your body is working off of 2 reserves (not sure what else to call it). So in essence, you have to think of it as 2 different sources - the consumed calories which is what you took in for that day which your body uses for immediate needs, and 'storage' which is the fat on your body that it uses for exercise (etc). It took me a little while to totally understand what she was saying, and even my husband had to help me, however once I could visualize it as 2 seperate "areas", it helped a lot. It also helped me understand more clearly why it's important to NOT go below the 1200 cals/day "suggested minimum". Hope that helps. |

| Health & Support | Anybody Know Anything About Gallbladder Problems? | Aug 25 2007 09:49 (UTC) |

I had my gallbladder removed in May 2000, after 2 months of constant GB attacks. It was awful - like having a knife running through my chest. I had a hard time breathing, couldn't lay flat in bed (slept sitting up in a living room chair for the 2 months), couldn't eat ... couldn't even stand the smell of food cooking. Even having water and rice cakes brought on attacks. The first severe attack had me doubled over and I thought I was having a heart attack. I tried for a while to shrug it off, thinking it would go away on it's own, however after a solid month, I was calling the doctor, who immediately got me a referral to a specialist. About 2 weeks later, I walked in to the specialist's office, he took 1 look at my x-ray and told me that I would be admitted the following week to have it removed - no if's, and's or but's. Yes, please have it checked out. |

They've been moving stuff little by little to the new place, so mostly just boxes and stuff left to move - they got most of the furniture there last week. |
