| I admire your determination and applaud your overall goal, but as a health writer of 20 years (and an oft-frustrated dieter) I've interviewed numerous dietitians and other diet experts and they all say the same thing. Goals like "clean eating" are doomed to fail.
Why? Because none of us lives a life of clean eating--and we shouldn't have to. The way a good dietary program works is it includes food that are considered "bad"--a brownie, a pretzel, a slice of pizza, whatever. As soon as you try to stay totally "clean" in your eating, you're only go to fall off the ladder, cheat...whatever you call it. And in fact all the messages here indicate exactly that. People who were really careful for days or weeks and then "lost" their self control. I've been building four things into my diet program--getting off my rump, drinking more water, cutting my portions, and including a treat into my daily routine. I've found that as I do the first four more, my craving for my usual treats--like desperate need for chocolate, carbs, or ice cream--has been diminishing. Instead, maybe I have popcorn, or a little peanut butter. Hope that helps and doesn't sound too discouraging. Good luck. |

| I used to be 5' 5 1/2. Now I went to a bone loss screening and she's told me I'm shrinking; 5' 4! Worse, my weight's crept up from 135 last year (with no belly) to 153 (up two pounds this morning!) and a belly that looks like a volleyball.
This calculator says I should only consume 1300 calories daily but I don't see how that's possible. Am getting thoroughly discouraged. |

| Any ideas for cutting calories, folks? My calculator here says I have to limit to 1300 calories and I don't see how. The closest I've come is 1600. I know there are some days I go overboard, but most I think I'm doing so well.

| >I cut out everything that had salt added extra to it. Needless to say I don't have that big belly
It's funny, I don't think I'm using that much salt, but I guess I can try to look more closely. I did have Chinese food yesterday and today (was too exhausted to cook) and a friend warned me that's hell on weight loss. BTW, when I say yesterday and today, that's one dish I was eating cut in half for dinner one night and lunch the other. |

| I turned 52 a weeks ago and I'm facing two weight problems.
First, I've put on about 15 lbs in the past year. I started back
to a staff job last year (I'm my family's only support) and the
insomnia and night sweats of menopause mean I'm exhausted at work--and
so I eat. We are bankrupt from 9/11 and there's no way to join a health club...and where I live offers no real avenues for walking. I can't drive, so it's not like I can take myself to the mall for walking. I am trying to exercise at home but it's not easy. And not only have I gained the weight, it's WHERE I've gained it that hurts. It's all settled into this big belly; I have the most G-d awful profile; I look like I'm carrying a volleyball in my pants. As a healthwriter, I know it's probably due to stress releasing a hormone called cortisone into my system. And as you know, at this age it's harder to lose the fat to begin with. I was so proud of all these GORGEOUS pants I bought at Goodwill last year (I do know how to find a bargain if I say so myself) so I really looked good in my new corporate job. Now most of them don't fit; and everything has to be worn w/an over blouse. And the stress keeps increasing; there are hints I might lose my job in a few weeks. (Yes, I've started looking elsewhere, but who knows how long it could take?) I just started online today. I'm really not sure how to use the system; I don't see any instructions. Appreciate any advice. |
