How's it going?

Time to get through the end of the year the best we can & then we'll be celebrating the New Year before we know it!  Perhaps it's time to think about what we would like to do in January, when things slow down a bit, eh?

In the meantime, do the best you can ~ enjoy all the happy making moments and remember, it's the people who count!  Not the food ;)

2006 New Traditions & Year End Holidays ~ A Lifestyle Challenge!

Let us Give Thanks & Enjoy the Holidays

For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Remember to take the time each day to make yourself a priority ~ this year will fly by too fast!  Try to set aside some personal time to focus on you, how you eat, and to get your exercise in, your own needs...

If you are shy on time and doing your normal routine is just impossible because you just don't have an hour to spare right now, look for moments to get a little extra physical movement into your life :)  Look for alternatives!  Just don't give up and abandon all of your goals.  Enjoy the Holidays ~ the people, friends & family :)  They are important ~ not the food.

Worth repeating ~  Here are some gr8 tips for dealing with emotional eating!  Thanks Willow :)

And lest we forget the wise words of Erma...

  • "What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets.  I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?"  - Erma Bombeck, "No One Diets on Thanksgiving"
Happy Holidays

~ super food of the week ~ Turkey!

Turkey ~ did you know it's considered a super food ~ the skinless breast meat that is!  Even leaner than chicken, 3 ounces of the skinless turkey breast meat only has 115 cals and 0.2 grams of saturated fat (71 mg cholesterol) ~ Remarkable!  Highly Nutritious, low in vat, inexpensive, versatile and always availble, perhaps we should eat turkey all year :)

The recipes are never ending ~ from the delicious holiday turkey recipes to the endless variety of left-over recipes :)   Turkey ~ Truly a culinary delight!

So many ways to lighten the calories and fats in our Holiday meals and the all-time favorite recipes really are easy to adapt with simple little changes and a few ingredient substitutions.

2006 New Traditions & Year End Holidays ~ A Lifestyle Challenge!

Feel free to join late (double back, pick up the prior weeks here and catch up if you want, or just join us now :)  If you have to skip a week, don't fret!  Life happens this time of year.  Let's do the best we can to have a gr8 end of the year instead of the same old, same old eat our way to New Years!  Gah!  Let's send 2006 out with a bang!  A Healthy bang :)

Kiss Strategies for the Holidays!

Can you believe another week flew by & November is 1/2 way over???  Already!!!

Time to shop for turkey, pumpkin pie & all those special treats!  Parties... Buffets @ work.  Holiday baking!  We've talked about this already but here are some more tips for Making over the Holiday Meals

This week!  Remember to set your goals and make yourself a priority this week.  Try to set aside some personal time to focus on you, how you eat, and to get your exercise in.

If you are shy on time and doing your normal routine is just impossible because you just don't have an hour to spare right now, then try alternatives & look for moments to get a little extra physical movement into your life :)

Walking! Any idea how much movement you really do get?  Maybe more than you think!   Consider wearing a pedometer for a week or 2 to see how close you get to the typically recommended goal of 10,000 steps per day!  Here's a gr8 article to check before buying a pedometer and lots of links to more info....  If you are sedentary, like in the 2,000 to 3,000 step range, look for simple ways to get more steps in!  Like put a pack of m&m's across the room.  Take 1 m&m each time you cross the room ;)  Hide the remote and get up to change the channel.  Get up and move during commercials ;)  Go shopping and do hot laps around the perimeter of the store...

This week!  Check in & say hi :)  Share your tips for moving more, dealing with the holiday time crunch, the goodies that people keep tossing in front of you, or anything that stresses you out right now!  In other words, how do you deal with the obstacles this time of year?  Think about what gets you off track and what you can do to overcome the obstacle!  Here are some gr8 tips for dealing with emotional eating!  Thanks Willow :)

Kiss Strategies!!!  try to Kiss!  Keep it simple & sweet :)  Sometimes it's easier if we just focus on 1 thing...   try to change 1 behaviour that gets in our way...  or try to keep 1 particular goal for the week, do 1 extra thing.  Deal with 1 problem... Won't you share your simple & sweet obstacle busting strategy with the group this week?

That's it for this week :)  Have a gr8 one!

~ super food of the week ~ pumpkin!

Maybe pumpkin pie isn't so bad afterall!  Consider skipping the crust but enjoy the rest for a nutritious treat!   Did you know pumpkin is a super food?  High in nutrition and too often overlooked, relegated to pumpkin pie for the holidays?  Consider incorporating it into your eating plans more frequently!  The orange color = anti-oxidant super powers...  and it's delicious too!  Check out recipes, nutrition benefits & more here!

Smart Goals ~ Smart Choices!

Here come the Holidays!  Eating out!  Gettogethers ~ Extra Food.  Extra Shopping.  Never enough time or money.  Can we say stress???  How do we get all our normal stuff done and all the extra fun stuff?  How do we organize and prep and arrange and pull it all off without loosing our cool?  Tearing our Hair Out?  Gaining 10 lbs???

Smart Choices!  Adjustments!  A little planning & little focus, a little time each day to take care of our own needs, a few changes and perhaps a little support here :)

This week let's talk a little more about Goals!  Let's start thinking about adapting all the holiday and winter foods!  Let's start thinking about alternatives ~ for eating and exercising!  Let's take a peek at 2oo7 that will be here before we have a chance to catch our breath!

Ready?  Gr8!  Let's break it down.  Take a part or 2 a day, follow the links for a few extra tips & easier reading!  And please, remember to come here and share your thoughts and strategies!  We all benefit from new ideas and sharing support :)

Part a) Tips & Tricks!  How do you carve out extra time?  Keep your family on the move?  Fit everything in?  Click here for some ideas!  What are your strategies?  Share your favorite strategies!  Any ideas you want to try this year :)

Part b) Last Weeks Goals!  How did you do?  Did you meet your goals?  If not, why?  Were they realistic?  Did you want to do them?  Did it turn out you didn't like the goal?  Life interrupt?  Were your goals S.M.A.R.T. Goals?
  • Specific ~ state exactly what you want to achieve, how you want to do it and when you want to do it.
  • Measureable ~ some way to tell that you did it!  Like walking the dog for 10 mins each morning and night... Take a watch ;)
  • Attainable ~ Before you actually set your goal, is the goal reasonable for you?  Do you have the time and desire to do it?  The $$, the energy? The umph???
  • Realistic ~ Goals should be within your ability to do it within your personal limitations (physical ability, food preferences, likes & dislikes).
  • Trackable ~ Tracking can keep you motivated.  Encourage you when you look back and see the changes!  How do you track?  A food or activity log?  Weight Log?  A list of goals and gates met?  A list of problems solved?  A list of Hopes and Dreams?
Click here to read more about goal setting from the Mayo Clinic.  The tips apply to more than just weight loss ;)

Part c) This weeks Goals! ~ Time to set your 1 or more eating, exercise, health & life goals for what you want to do this week ~ same as before or can change!  Daily or Weekly!  Long or Short term!  It's all about {{{you}}} ~ what you want and need to do this week :)

Just this week? What are your goals for how you eat and exercise?

  • Will you exercise?  Tackle a project?  Eat a certain way.  Do something different?  Keep everything the same?  _______?
  • Goals should be attainable ~ what you really can do and intend to do... but not necessarily the same old thing?
  • Do you want to keep things the same or try something new?
Part d) Adapting Recipes!  Let the Baking Begin!  The sales will hit soon.  Spend $100 and get a free turkey!  Buy Walnuts! Get your roasting pans, goodies & spices and everything delicious!  Seems like we're overwhelmed with advertisements, tips, new recipes, bombarded with ideas.

So do you know what you plan to bake?  Make and take to events?  For the special feasts?  The same old traditional way?  Or would you like to consider adapting the recipe to a healthier version?

It's pretty easy to reduce the calories and fat without reducing the taste, texture or quality of the recipe!  Afraid you'll do the wrong thing and end up with dense, soggy baked goodies?   Don't substitute oil for butter!  Forget the whipped or tub-style margarine.  Instead, replace 1/2 the butter, shortening or oil with the same amount of applesauce or prune puree (that's right, prune puree ;)

Don't really know where to begin???  Then click here for 5 gr8 ways to make your recipes healthier (tips and tricks) from the Mayo Clinic, and click here for more ingredient substitutions!

This week's challenge!!!

  • Pull out one of your favorite traditional recipes.
  • Put it through the recipe tool here on calorie-count and analyze it.
  • Then adapt the old recipe using the tips and put it back through the tool.   It will give you a link!
  • Share the new recipe here :)
[Note: If you don't have time this week, share a recipe next week :)  Adapting recipes can be done any time of the year.  Some people prefer to eat the old traditional foods on feast days.  But what about the other days?  Perhaps then you'll be inspired to adapt and create your version ~ your new favorites!!! ;]

Part f) Exercise & Alternative Exercise!  On the move!  Running from dusk to dawn?  Burning the candle at both ends?  Can't get to the gym?

Your challenge this week is to do your normal exercise routine or alternative exercise!  Keep moving!  Find creative ways to get up & move :)

What are your alternatives?  If you are moving then you are exercising!  If you are not laying down sleeping, then you are exercising.  Maybe not so much while you are chained to a desk, but what about during breaks?

Sometimes, it's hard to break away for a full exercise session!  Can you break it down into smaller chunks?  Like quick walks for 10 mins 3 times a day will keep your metabolism revved up!!!  Have you considered slipping in a little something extra like doing a set of 10 wall pushups or other little exercise once each morning, afternoon and evening, maybe when you go to the bathroom or take a break?  Check out the "Browse our Exercises" for some ideas!

Consider dancing to your favorite holiday music?  Talking on a cordless phone and walking around the house while you talk?  Park the car 3 blocks away from work?  Take the stairs instead of the elevator?

Your challenge this week?  What are your strategies & alternatives? What holiday activities will you do?  Share here :)

  • Can you *guestimate* the calories burned?  Find a similar exercise listed here to see what kind of calories you might burn?
  • For example:  would wrapping packages be like paying the bills or drying dishes?  What about when you take a drive and look at Christmas Lights?  There has to be calories burned then like when you watch tv, eh?  What about standing around chatting at parties?
  • Think about your holiday activities, plan your strategy & share with the group :)
Post your goals, ideas, and replies here!  Each week, whatever you want to share with the group :)

Taking Stock & Looking ahead to the Holidays

So all year, Summer and this Fall, we worked hard on our goals, how we eat and exercise.   But all of a sudden, Halloween has come and gone, and we're zooming towards the winter Holidays!

I don't know about you, but I usually throw down the towel, abandon my diets & exercise and start eating with glee!   I *drool* just thinking about winter foods, fun events and the Holiday traditions.  And usually, I gain 10 lbs.  Forget how to exercise.  Get so busy my head spins around, and I hardly know what to do first.  And... I do everything except take care of my health, fitness and nutrition needs, goals.

.....skids to a stop!  Hold the Presses!  Stop those flying horses!!!

What if?  What if we don't throw down the towel, abandon our new goals, our new lifestyles????

What if we choose to follow our journey even through November and December?  What if we create *new traditions* for the holidays?  What if we start Now?  And continue together as we live through the coming holiday season?

Whatchya think?  Want to play & stay together?

Week 1 ~ Taking Stock & Looking Ahead to the Holidays ~ Our current & Holiday Goals & Traditions!

    • Holiday plan -  I plan on taking it one day at a time, or even just one part of a day at a time.  I hope to enjoy the foods of the holidays, however in moderation, and be aware of what I am eating, and WHY.  I don't want to lose sight of all that I have accomplished, but I also don't want to be so narrow-sighted on my goals that I forget to enjoy the life that is around me.  And if I fumble or fall, just get back up and try again, and keep going.

    • Holiday Plan - I definitely have a plan for the holidays this year.  My ultimate goal is to lose the last 12 pounds by the end of the year, and that will only be possible if I keep counting right through to New Years!  But, I definitely want to enjoy myself.  My food plan for each holiday is:

Halloween - don't over indulge in candy.  This really isn't normally a bad holiday for me, so I'm not as worried about it.  I'm sure I'll have some sweets, but I want to make sure I fill up on healthy stuff thoughout the day.  We will not be giving candy out to the kids, it freaks my dogs out to have people at the door all night, so that means I won't have any extra sweets in my house.

Thanksgiving - I will not starve myself in anticipation of dinner!  I probably will go over on calories this day, but I want to still make normal portion size choices.  I won't put butter on my rolls or my sweet potatoes as I may have in years past.  And I will limit myself on the pie, although you can be sure I'll be eating small slices!  Most important is that I not overstuff myself, I eat healthy throughout the day, and I enjoy my relatively smaller portions.

Christmas - I will not participate in any kind of cookie exchange this year - that's #1.  I may not even make any cookies, since hubby is on the road most of the time and it ends up me eating them all.  If I do make some for him, I will pack a bunch for him and take the rest in to work.  Christmas day isn't usually too high a calorie day for me, so I will stick with mostly my normal routine, just avoiding the same too-large portion issues that Thanksgiving can create.  I will only have one portion of eggs benedict, which is the biggest culprit of cals for me this day.

With that said, the rest of my plan is much more important!  :)  I will allow myself to have treats, same as I always have throughout my whole journey.  But I will really amp up the exercise while doing it!!  I am starting to increase my running in anticipation of a half marathon in April.  It will be very important for me to keep up with this.  I will also add in cross training as needed to keep my body revving.  Exercise is what I will use to keep my deficits pretty in spite of any small indulgences.  Woo hoo for exercise!  :)

    • holiday plan - Holidays are spent eating ... in my family anyway.  I'm going to enjoy myself, not count calories, but also not overindulge TOO much. JUST eat til I get full, not til I'm stuffed like I would normally do on holidays. I'm also not going to pass up the desserts, however, considering I'll be the one baking probably 70% of them.  I think it's time for some new recipes for our holiday desserts though ... something I can eat and enjoy with lower calories that everyone else will like, too.

This unstructured eating will be ONLY on the actual holidays themselves ... Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Years Eve ... NOT on the days leading up to them.  And pffft, Halloween doesn't matter, I'll go to class, come back to my apartment, avoid the candy, n sit down with a few scary movies, eating only what I have planned for the day.

If I go over on calories (and I probably will), so what? ... it's only a few days a year, it's not like I'm going back to my old habits forever.

    • Holiday Plan - For me, like so many others, the holidays all pose a tasty problem - yummy, sweet treats and lots of fancy meals. I love food, all kinds of food, and when I decided to seriously lose weight I knew temptation would be an issue. My 'game plan', as it were, has always been eat what I want, deny myself nothing, but to count every calorie. I look at the calories in the item, then weigh that against the desire. Is it something I can do without today? If it is, then I say to myself, 'No, not today- Maybe tomorrow.' This way I'm not denying myself anything - just putting it off until another, more appropriate time - tomorrow(sometimes tomorrow is a very long time away). So far this way of looking at the treats(and second helpings) has worked for me and I've found I don't miss those things I didn't have today because there is always tomorrow.

I plan on handling the holidays by making my own low fat versions of the foods that I love during the holidays.  On top of this I plan on counting calories and increasing exercise to accommodate for some of the foods that I can?t make lower fat versions of.  I am cooking this year so it will be a little easier to get through the holidays then if I was going over to families houses.  I kind of have the control over what is fixed and what isn?t.

I did all of the parts of the challenge except I only worked out 4 days this week and did not do the brain bender.

    • Holiday Plan - To my wonderful friends and family - as you all know, I have spent over half this year working on being a healthier and happier me.  As the holidays are approaching, I ask all of you for your help and support.  Please continue to make the wonderful foods that we have made a part of our holiday traditions but please understand when I choose smaller servings and don't load my plate the first (or second!) time this year.  As part of my annual contribution to the festivities you can still count on my famous pumpkin white chocolate cheesecake - and I hope you all enjoy!  I will also be bringing some yummy salads and steamed vegetables to round out our meal choices.  Remember, it's about being together and not how much turkey and dressing we eat.  I am thankful for the love and support you have shown me on my journey and I know that I can count on you to provide me with the same during our upcoming celebrations!

    • Holiday Plan - I plan on spending this holiday season focused more on visiting with friends and family than on mealtimes.  Occasionally in the past I have gone with the two bite rule.  With so many food choices it is easy to load up a plate and throw caution to the wind.  During most holiday dinners I have found that if I put only two to three bites of each item on my plate then I get a little taste of everything, don't feel hungry afterward and can still breathe without unbuttoning my pants :-D

    • For me personally at least, I am the one who is going to be doing all the cooking for holiday dinners on Thanksgiving and winter holidays, both with family and with friends, so I don't have to worry too much about trying to figure out calories or if something might be healthy. I'm going to be using tons of vegetables, vegetable proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats to make great vegan menus that are also very healthy. So I will be counting, but it will be extremely easy for me this year!~

    • We are all family and friends.  We care about each other.  So I know that my well being is important to you, as yours is important to me.   My eating habits have changes and I know you will give me the support I need to follow through on this new lifestyle...

1 last thought...

have you googled carb shifting diets?  tends to pull up the high protein, high fat, low carb diets/strategies, aka the atkins types of diets...

carb shifting diets usually refers to low carb diets like the atkins diet...  which has recently gone into bankruptcy due to people finally realizing that it is not the healthiest type of diet to do... people usually can't tolerate low carb for a long time and have not learned how to eat a balanced diet that maintains or helps them lose weight as a lifestyle.  So, when they quit the low carb diet, whammo, they go nuts and tend to regain.

Here's an article from a very prominent doctor at harvard explaining the risks of these low carb type diets...  it's kind of towards the middle.

Here's the Game Plan Week 7, Part 8 Motivation Statements ~ How to cope with the holidays :)

  • willowraven (Phat Fighters)
    • I plan on taking it one day at a time, or even just one part of a day at a time.

  • pandajenn19 (Dyn-o-mite)
    • I definitely have a plan for the holidays this year.

  • readnchick (Dyn-o-mite)
    • Holidays are spent eating ... in my family anyway.

  • hubbaji (Flab Busters)
    • For me, like so many others, the holidays all pose a tasty problem - yummy, sweet treats and lots of fancy meals.

The really gr8 news!  The games may be over but we don't have to part!  We look forward to seeing you around calorie-count for a long time to come :)

Cheers, United2gether, Garnet77, Kalkette, Beanie1125 ~ your Friends & Games Coordinators :)
