Vegetarian Calories in Essene Bread May 03 2007
05:10 (UTC)
Hmm that's strange they're calling a baked bread Essene bread, because it's supposed to just be sprouted and dehydrated since it's a raw item.

The kind I get is sprouted wheat berries, dates, and cinnamon, and that is it. I just don't know how much wheatberries are in each "serving" or what a "serving" of it is.

It's really just for brands imported from China -- if you buy local/organic, it should be fine

It's almost always in the bulk section at health food stores--I'd check there first, but otherwise, Wild Oats and Whole Foods have it.

The powder is a powder, and the flakes are flakes....  there is no difference other than the texture.

Sprouted bread (sometimes toasted, which I guess is an oxymoron of some sort) and fresh fruit or a smoothie with flaxseed

New Chapter is one of the best quality brands there is.

They have female and male specific vitamins (as well as everyone multi-s). The ingredients are vegan, organic, food-based, and also contain probiotics which are excellent for digestion (we're supposed to have 3-4 POUNDS of healthy bacteria in our guts--most people have less than 1).

They're pretty pricey, but I personally think it's worth it.

Otherwise, Super Nutrition is a good brand, so is Alive multi's by Nature's Way. All vegan multi's.

Vegetarian I became a raw vegan last summer. Anybody else here a raw vegan? Feb 18 2007

I have been reading a ton about raw lately, because I think I'm ready to make the transition. I became interested in it a few years ago, but I don't think I could have done it then.

There are some really good books out there... Hooked on Raw is one, and there is another one at my work I was looking at, but can't think of the name right now. They have TONS of info, and not only recipies.
After reading about it more extensively, even just a balanced vegan diet with cooked items and some processed fake meats seems unhealthy...

Also, anyone worried about missing cooked grains, you can spout any grain to then have it be considered raw. Quinoa, brown rice, almost anything.

For any of you who are 50% or more raw, how much did it cost you to get all relevent equipment (juicer, Saladacco, etc.)? I'm thinking of putting my money towards that stuff instead of getting new pots and pans...

Man... I never believed that was true, but then at work (a natural health food/supplements store), some of my coworkers insisted that it was true, and I figured they would for sure know. I'm really glad and relieved to know it's a myth though--thanks for posting that link!

If you look for brown rice and pea powder, those two sources actually form a complete protein, and depending on your view of soy being overprocessed, might be a more sound choice.

PETA has been investigating this more, actually, and although POM made that statement, PETA has been finding that they (POM) have been plotting to outsource their testing. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is also against this, of course. Some pretty horrible tests are in store for mice. I actually wrote the company a letter not too long ago complaining and criticizing them. The response I got, essentially, was 1. hey, they're just mice... who cares... at least it's not a "cute" animal and 2. leave us alone because people are protesting us and hurting our feelings.

Repugnant.

I wouldn't mind a cast iron pan... nothing fancy, but I cook so much and everything I already have is kind of cheap, so a new one would be nice...

Otherwise I don't even really care... er maybe Twin Peaks on dvd :)

I'm more excited about making presents for family and friends than getting anything myself

I've been on a  HUGE soup kick lately, so maybe just make a huge pot of chili with red beans, cinnamon, and cocoa and then some cornbread.... aaaannd... maybe a salad hehe

Sounds like a good idea to plan ahead like that... I always mean to, and just wind up getting wrapped up in everything... that can be dangerous heh.

You can order one at the Turtle Island Foods website: www.tofurkey.com

You could also make your own, Bryanna (chef) has, supposedly, an amazing recipe that's as good, if not better:

And there is even a link to a bunch of Xmas recipies

Goodluck!

Yeah, I agree to avoid snappy remarks... it is SO tempting, but they will find a way to turn it around as that you started the whole thing, and it's a typical preaching, angsty veg*n situation, and that's even more annoying. As has been said, just say no thanks and act like you think they're just trying to be polite... they probably just do want to get a rise out of you and/or have you cave in.
Foods Thanksgiving food... Nov 29 2006

I love Thanksgiving foods--I make semi-traditional dishes, but veganized and healthier... I had two dinners this year (one with family and one with friends) and cooked both times! :

Roasted butternut squash with wild and brown rice stuffing with vegetables
Holiday latkes (shredded beets, parsnips, carrots, and yams)
Pumpkin biscuits
Mixed greens salad with walnuts and a cranberry viniagrette
Organic cranberry sauce (from a can--time was running out)
Pumpkin pie

then for the second dinner...
Roasted Tofurkey in a pomegranate/tamari/olive oil baste
Shephard's pie with roasted vegetables in the above baste turned into a gravy with mashed yams and yukon gold potatoes on top
Whole wheat stuffing (also from scratch)
Garlicky kale in olive oil
Pomegranate-gingerbread muffins
Pumpkin pie

All that stuff makes me drool just thinking about it!

No prob, Sarah

When I make stirfry, I sautee onions, garlic, ginger, and scallions, then add any combination of: broccoli, spinach or kale, carrots, sweet peppers, green beans, grilled eggplant, zuccini, and/or beets.

I usually just spray a non-stick pan with canola oil and brown the tofu on medium-medium high. Having some healthy fats is good for you though, so sometimes I just do it in about a teaspoon of peanut oil for 1/5 of a block. For the vegetables, I always use peanut oil--it has a higher temperature sustainability point than olive oil, has healthy fats, and the flavor just goes really well with stirfry.

Also, for protein bars, at least most, if not all, Clif and Luna bars are vegan. The Iced Ginger seasonal Clif Bar is REALLY yummy! And so is the carrot cake flavor :)
Vegetarian Question for vegetarians - fish & eggs Nov 12 2006

To harvest caviar, they find a pregnant female, bludgeon her over the head until she's half-dead and she is bleeding from the eyes, then while she is still writhing in pain, they slice open her abdomen, remove the eggs, and leave her to bleed to death.

As for this "argument"--and as I have stated before, the issue here, in this thread, and as pertaining to the original question, is simply defining words in the language. Saying there should be no classification because it "excludes" people is absurd, and is like saying that there should be no differentiation between calling someone a man or a woman, because we are all people anyhow. The word "vegetarian" versus the word "vegan" is simply as such: words. I call myself a vegan because it means something different from vegetarian. That does not make me an elitist or somehow make me preachy and trying to make others who haven't made the same choices as me feel bad. They're just words to define something: in this case, lifestyle choices. How would we even know these choices exist if they did not have names and certain attributes to them. If you eat fish yet otherwise follow a vegetarian diet, then just use the word "pescavegetarian"; what's the big deal.

Hey I was vegan throughout college (and still am :) )..... If I knew I was going to be very busy all week, I would wash and chop the vegetables as soon as I brought them home from the store, so then when I'd cook, all I'd have to do is toss them in a pan (or pot, or whatever) with some oil/etc. and turn on the heat.

Another good thing though about winter, is you can just put stuff in the oven and study until it's done, since cooking that way doesn't take too much effort.

It's also helpful to make a huge batch of rice or noodles, etc. at the beginning of the week, so you don't have to do any prep work for carbs either. Soup tastes great too the longer it sits, and I'd make a huge pot to last 3-4 days....  You could brown tofu ahead of time too, and just keep it in the fridge until you use it.

Fast stuff is always pasta with tomato sauce, stirfries, roasted vegetables, hummus sandwiches on pita with vegetables... and sometimes I'd get a ball of dough from a pizza place that had vegan dough, and I'd make my own cheeseless pizza or (vegan)pesto pizza, and it would save a TON of time on making the crust myself.

Hope that helps a little

Just copy the address and paste it in the browser

You left out the depriving them of oxygen to the brain, and other websites list other things as well.

They are having the government raid the homes of people protesting the animal testing, as is stated in the article.

Pretty messed up for a juice company.

I got the recipe from the Vegan Planet cookbook....

Basically is just flour, baking powder, molasses or maple syrup, some salt, canned or mashed pumpkin, and soymilk..... mixed and then baked in clumps......... very soft and biscuit-y with a pumpkin-ish twist. And they're not too sweet or too salty :)

2 and 8....

I used to post more often, but now it's just occasionally.

I'll say my opinion whenever and not really care what others think; and most of the time, I will try to be respectful.
There has been a lot of petty drama going on lately that I just don't care about, so I have been more in the journals. This is a silly place for drama, as far as I'm concerned, but drama can happen wherever there are people, of course.
As it has been said, it seems like people are either desperate for attention or desperate for recognition by trying to start an argument or gang up on someone with their internet clique (which is another completely ridiculous thing--especially here).
