Just bumping this up there in case people want to join our group!  We're pretty active over there.  Anyone who wants to join us as we run back around the world, c'mon over and join our group (link above)!  First we'll finish our Victory Lap around Australia and then we'll be trekking out across the world again!

I'd like to reiterate that you didn't have to be part of our Run Around the World to take part in the Victory Lap.  The Victory Lap is a way to keep us motivated before we start our next, out-of-this-world challenge!  We welcome all runners of all shapes, sizes and speeds!

I've been so busy this week that my biggest problem is that I don't have enough time to get a decent distance in.  Have had meetings or social committments every evening this week.  Then some days I also have to work a little late.  This leaves me with usually less than an hour to run.  Last night I just barely managed 4.5 miles.  That would be fine, except I had the energy and desire to run longer.  Of course, when I have the time, I don't feel that way.  Such is life!

YAAAAY!  I finished my 10k this morning in 54:28!  This is just under the 55 minute ceiling to make the slowest seeded category for next summer's Peachtree Road Race, and it's also my PR for a 10K.  I am so pleased!  I honestly didn't think I could do it.  Go figure!

Melkor, I think we're taking a little breather before we head back around the world.  Maybe once we finish our Victory Lap around Australia we'll be ready for a new Mission!

All, we're starting a new RATW group using the fancy new group feature that CC has added.  We're thinking about a new thread for our victory lap.  And we might even have a new trick up our sleeve in the near future.  Things are happening!

Morning, runners!  I'm going to do another speed session today and hope that helps for Saturday's 10K.  At this point I have serious doubts that I will be able to pull off a sub-55 minute race, but we'll see.  Last night I did 4 miles at 9:10 so there's a chance I could pull off a miracle.  Not bloody likely, but still a small chance.  :-)  There's always another 10K in Feb that's almost totally downhill that I can shoot for!

30 miles for the week ending 23 Sept!

Kscout: CONGRATULATIONS!  I can't tell you how impressed I am!  I've never run a full marathon, so I think your accomplishment is fabulous!

Manta: good job on your half!  I bet seeing that opera house at the end was incredible!

Wrm: NO WAY?!  That's craziness!  It's not me, that's for sure.  But now I'm going to be looking at the license plates of every maroon car I see!

Hi, All!  My 5K went fine, I didn't get a very good time but I really did run my ass off.  My official time was 27:50 but (and I hate it when people make excuses, but) I did start out at the very back of about 400 total runners, so I'm sure the actual time was skewed.  I'm slightly pissed off about that, especially since I'm positive I was running an 8 minute mile for the first mile.  But, whatever!  I'll just try to squeeze up closer to the front for my 10K this weekend!  I just hate doing that, I don't like people all that much and prefer to run without impediment.  I'm sure a lot of people feel that way, too.

3 miles on Friday and then 6 on Saturday (5K plus 3 mile recovery run afterwards) for a total of 9 more miles.

Skinny_kitty: the tempo run is really easy.  You start out doing 5-8 minutes at your slow pace.  Then at 5-minute intervals increase your pace slightly.  About 40-50 minutes into the run (or so) you should be at top racing pace.  You should only be able to hold the top pace for a 2-3 minutes, then go back down to your slow pace for about 10 minutes.  Usually I gradually go back down to my slow pace with a 5 minute interval at a medium pace, then 10 minutes at my slow pace.

Morning everyone!  I've got a 5K race tomorrow and a 10K race next Saturday, blech.  I don't really care about the 5K tomorrow, but it's in my neighborhood, it even starts and ends 5 blocks from my house, so it's really a way to support my neighborhood association.  But on the 10K next week I'm trying to qualify for the slowest seeded category for next summer's Peachtree, which means I have to finish in under 55 minutes.  My PR for a 10K is 56:50, so it'll be hard!  However, I got that PR at this particular race last year.  Wish me luck!

In other news, we're having abnormally cool weather this week: it's been in the 70s, which is SO COOL.  And it's sunny and not humid.  It's basically RUNNING HEAVEN.

Thanks for updating the miles, Wrm!  You rawk!

Skinny_kitty, that is so awesome!  Great job on what sounds like a super tough course!  I could never do that.  As rk1 said, I can run for three hours but swimming kills me.

Manta, you are one reason why I picked Australia!  We could have done the north or south Pole, but it seemed wrong to totally ignore where one of our runners lives.

Keep running, folks!  We'll figure out how to record all the miles.

Hi, Minie13!  Welcome back!  I was just wondering about you the other day!

Okay, I'll try to get a route around Australia up later today or tomorrow.  VICTORY LAP!

Also, I'd just like to report that I'm an idiot.  I'm taking today as a second rest day because I haven't been cross training at ALL since my knee pain incident and also ramped up my mileage too sharply the past could weeks.  Consequently I'm having knee pain again.  Yep, I'm not too smart.  Sigh.

Hi Minie!  I certainly remember you!  Welcome back!

I don't have much to contribute, other than that I'm sure you'll bounce back, since you are determined enough.  I know it's discouraging when you are used to being in good physical condition to accept your body's temporary limitations.  That happens to me when I cut back or have an injury.

I am still recovering from some pretty serious runner's knee. When it was bad I told myself I HAD to do more cross training or ELSE.  Guess who didn't do any cross training at all once the pain went away?  Yep.  Guess who is now having more knee pain again also?  Yes, I'm an idiot.  So my advice to you is to make sure to keep up the cross training!

Oh, and also: try yoga.  It's FABULOUS for runners.

Wrm, did you run another 6 miles last night?  Heh, why don't you knock out those last 14 miles today, then?

No I didn't. We were at 32.75 MTG after jfk's post (1653). Egrabowski's mileage (5.5) dropped us to 27.25 (post 1654). So your 5 miles (post 1655) should have lowered us to 22.25, right??

Yes, you're right, I think I must have posted at the same time as Egrabowski or something.  Good eye!

And, may I say, we are AWESOME!

Hmph, I haven't gone running yet today, hope all the miles won't be done before I get to it!

Heatherlanders, I think we're all in agreement that we're going to do another mission.  The question is merely which mission!

According to our route plan, right now we're at the tip of South Africa.  See the map here: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1174669. You know what, though?  I was thinking that we totally skipped Australia!  Who's up for a victory lap around Australia?  If so, I'll do up the route!

Good morning all!

Kscout, just based on the fact that you'll be tired from working the night shift, and you know yourself well enough to realize you'll probably push yourself too hard, I'd say skip the 5K.  There'll always be another one!  Good luck on the marathon, by the way!

As usual, I ran out of time and couldn't do my long run yesterday as planned (this happens to me all the time!) so instead I did 4.5 miles of intervals.

Every runner deals with this, and it's also different for every runner.  For me, it takes a good 3/4 of a mile  to a full mile until I feel good.  Usually I start off running slowly, because if I start off at my regular pace it completely drains me.  Whereas if I start out running slowly, by the time I warm up I'm ready to really hit it.  During long runs, I don't get into the groove until mile 4 or so.  So my advice is to not worry about it.  Just go slowly until you don't feel like you're dragging, and then run like the wind!

On race day, you will definitely want to warm up first.  Depending on your regular distances, I would run up to a mile beforehand, and then stretch thoroughly.  The thing about races is there's a lot of standing around beforehand, so take that into consideration.  No matter how much you warm up, you'll still stand there longer than you'd like, so you might still start the race off a little slow.  Good luck!

It's not getting light until much later these days.  I'm glad I don't run in the morning, considering it was still dark at 7:00 am this morning!  Having grown up in Mass where it's light at 5:00 am all summer, it's slightly depressing.  Then I remember that it's still in the 80s until October and I'm happy again, heh.

4 miles last night on the treadmill watching lighting bursts! (My gym is on the top floor and has plate glass windows all around; very cool for watching weather.)

257.35 miles to go!

Google Pedometer is also suspect.  However, I've found that if I use Googe Pedometer on satellite mode, which allows me to actually follow the sidewalk rather than the middle of the street, I get a much more accurate distance.  Anyway, ducklingerthank was talking about her timing, not the actual distance.  Considering my 5K PR is 26 minutes, I'd take either one of those times!

While this weekend wasn't as debaucherous as last, it was still quite fun.  Sunday is my regular day off, and Saturday I completely lost track of time and ended up with only half an hour to run.  So that gives me 2.5 miles to report for the whole weekend.  Heh.

291.5 miles to go!

I think what we need is someone who's willing to update the map.  The lack of this has been (in my opinion!) the weak link in our mission to run around the world.  If we run back around the world, it's vital that someone tracks our progress so we can see which country we're running through!

Aaaaand because I need to get on this weekend's debauchery immediately after work with no pesky workout in the way, I went to the gym at lunchtime:

6.10 miles today, 5 Sept.

I work at a university and use the faculty/staff gym, which means there are a TON of people who show up at the end of August after their summer off.  It's not quite as bad as January, but it's still pretty annoying!  I'm always like, "Why do you bother when you're just going to give up in 3 weeks anyway?"

That was mean.  At least they're getting 3 weeks of exercise.  Better'n none at all.  Sigh.

Seriously, folks, what're we going to do once we finish?  Here are two options:

1. Turn around and run back around the Earth!

2.  Run to the moon!
