| Weight Loss | Recommendation for Scales? | Sep 21 2006 04:04 (UTC) |

| When I started about 2 weeks ago I got a $10 scale at Bath and Body Works. It's only a lb off from the scale at the doctor's and doesn't change if you step off and then back on. It's digital, but isn't too fancy (Doesn't really do any decimals except .5). It's also purple! So I find I dread it a little less, just cause the color's happy. | |||

| I do a 20 min yoga in the morning and at night. I play DDR for 45 min in the morning (shiryu is such a dork! ^^;;;) and I do the treadmill/elliptical for an hour (1/2 high intensity 1/2 mod. intensity). I'm trying to walk to school but totally failing so far! I also go to this "Fitness Boot Camp" at the local community college twice a week. Tomorrow is the personal fitness test so wish me luck! | |||

Hello Again! I'm back and today my news is a bit better than before. Today I read all your wonderful posts and thought to myself, "With all this help I just have to try again!" So I did. =^.^= I decided to make a new goal: To develop my relationship with my mother and try to spend more time with her. This will hopefully help me feel closer and less defensive. Secondly, if this communication goes well that maybe I can start talking to her about how her comments hurt/bother me. I'm going to continue to try to ask her out on walks during the weekend when she's less tired from work, show her my results for nutrition each day, and work out in the house where she can see me. This way she'll feel as if she's more part of the process. I also tried to find a way to make those types of comments motivate me.... I didn't have much luck, but instead I've decided that every time she makes a comment like that I'll go work out. Exercise = Serotonin = Happy. Between the funfun chemicals in my brain and being worn out I hopefully won't have the energy to get angry or annoyed. Furthermore, athena and kathy pointed out that the 'mmm' had a different interpretation from the one I was using. So maybe if I take time to take a step back and look at what she says from an outside perspective then I can find the positive (or at least the not quite so negative) in it. The last thing I did was try to find some articles about starvation and what it does to your health and weight. I asked her to read them tonight and got great results! I think aspriggs was right when she said my mom felt intimidated. With the new articles my mother was encouraging me to get through the plateau/weight gain (since I do have to do some more recovering from the starvation period) and to have an after dinner snack to up my calories to a healthy level. I really want to thank people for the great advice. Everyone has been absolutely fantastic. It's been a pleasure to a) feel the support of the community and b) feel like I can accomplish something. Hopefully in another week or two I can start seeing the result from eating healthy and exercising too! |

| Weight Loss | Someone help - what should I eat before a game? | Sep 20 2006 07:20 (UTC) |
|
| Carbs! We always had pasta during water polo tournaments. The carbs are ready to use energy that give you a boost. Fat and protein take longer to digest and usually aren't ready in time. But eating carbs an hour and a half before soccer practice should give you the oomph you need. | |||

| I have to take synthroid too. You may already know this, but one
of the things that my doctor told me was that I couldn't have any form
of calcium until 3 HOURS after I had taken the pill, compared to the 1
hour for everything else. I think it interferes or
something. Mangos have calcium. Bread has calcium.
Everything has calcium. Make sure to check out what you're eating
before you eat it. I just take my synthroid at 6am and then go
back to sleep. When I wake up for real at 9am, then I can finally
have breakfast. Since the thyroid deals with your metabolism this
may be the problem. Check it out with your doctor and see what
he/she has to say |

| I gained weight! Was very upsetting. Part of it was that I was starving myself before hand. Second part of it was "ooh, that aches, that must be a muscle beginning to build." So yeah, instead of acceleration it was a deceleration. I'm just beginning to lose weight, so hopefully that'll the new muscles will help me lose weight faster! | |||

| Hello everyone, Shi here. And I most definitely am a binger. My drug of choice is potato chips and I nearly always fall to a 'salty' craving. I love salty things. Obviously I have a problem with my sodium levels. I nearly crashed and burned today when the Craving hit me this afternoon. At first I just hid out in my room and tried to avoid the kitchen. Eventually I crawled into my dad's office and begged him to count out exactly one serving size of 'Cheez-its.' He looked at me. "Why can't you do it?" "'Cause then I might eat them all!" I love my daddy. He listens to me even if he thinks I'm a crazy person. So I didn't fail today, but who knows if I'll survive the next Craving. |

| Weight Loss | HELP! Finding it difficult to go above 800 calories a day | Sep 20 2006 02:12 (UTC) |

| With no offense to mspriff, don't just jump to 1500 cals. You'll feel bloated and upset. Slowly add 50-100cals a week. One step at a time. And if you haven't hit your goal by the time you go to bed, have a handful or nuts or fruit. Don't worry about making it all up because it'll make you miserable, but do make a point to eat something to start training your stomach and metabolism. Nuts are better because protein takes longer to digest and keeps the metabolism up. | |||

| Buy one outfit that's tailored/form-fitting that you can wear on a
regular day. Then make it a goal to wear it once a week.
Once you get used to it, a month or so later, add another outfit and
another day. I've always loved baggy clothes even when I wasn't overweight and was fit, but I've found that you always get more compliments when you wear form fitting/nicer fitting clothes. I don't like them, but I make it a habit to look nice once a week. Plus it helps to keep me on track! Baggy clothes tend to cause me to slip. |

| I'm with canadianchick, I don't like working out during the daytime (it's still so hot out) but the minute the yelling might start or I have the urge to cry, I jump on the treadmill. Working out really bites, but getting into a fight with my family is much ~much~ worse | |||
| Weight Loss | is it possible to lose weight w/ lack of protein?? | Sep 19 2006 06:14 (UTC) |

| I hate meat. But I've found that veggie burgers can be microwaved for a minute and then are ready to go. They tend to contain soy which ups your amino acids a bit. Plus if you get the south beach diet cereal bars - they have more protein than most, every little bit helps. Don't freak over it, but remember that we females do need iron so find a good supplement | |||

| Hey guys! Thanks for all the replies and great advice. I'm sorry that I didn't respond earlier but I wanted to try some of the things that you suggested out and so I could tell you how it went. The first thing I did was try to get the book from the library, but it was checked out. It's coming in next week so I'm looking forward to that. The second thing was that I sorta of ambushed her.... I sat on the couch and watched tv until she suggested I go for a walk. I invited her to join me! Unfortunately, her response was, "You go too fast for me. I hate walking with you because it's too much." Then later at dinner I had 2 chicken breasts (I was short on protein for the day and had only had 900 cals so far) and she told me that I shouldn't have the second one. So after dinner I showed her the results from the 'analysis' section to prove that I was being careful, on top of things, and trying very hard. All I got was a "mmm," before she turned away. I'm... sorta depressed about this. I started this day having read your responses and felt very enthusiatic about patching over this dispute and helping my relationship with my mother. And at the end of the day I feel as if I was shot down twice. I guess plans don't work out the way you expect them to most of the time. |

| I've found it works best to measure out a serving of one bad food a day. So if you have a chip craving, measure it out (it'll be about 8 chips) and then PUT THE BAG AWAY B4 YOU EAT ANY! This'll help you not go back for more. It's okay to have a little bad food each day, as long as it's only a little! | |||
| Weight Loss | Losing and gaining the same lbs | Sep 18 2006 07:01 (UTC) |

| Use hanging out with family and friends as a chance to exercise.
I've found that even if I call a friend up to go to the mall that it's
better than sitting at home and reading all day long. It might
not be as good as during the workdays, but it's much better than
nothing at all. I personally end up dragging my parents and
friends to biking trails whenever I get the chance! The uphill
and downhill of the trails tends to work more of my hamstrings and
quads, which may be enough to prevent shin splint pain. |

| One of the best ways to keep on track is to plan your meals in advance, that way you can say, "Only 30 min 'til dinner, I can wait" instead of snacking and you know you'll never go over your cal limit because you've already planned it out! | |||

| Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me a hand. Instead of losing weight I'm gaining weight. My mom's a nurse and told me that it was unhealthy to go below 1500 cals a day, so I've been hanging around that range. So I end up eating on average 2000 cals and burning 500 cals. My sedentary burn is 1900 cals. However, after 3 weeks of dieting and exercising I went from 175lbs to 179lbs. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? | |||
