| Rice Dream products are good, as well as Good Karma ice cream. I particularly love their carrot cake flavor! Additionally, you can make "ice cream" with frozen bananas if you have a good blender/food processor. | |||

| Vegetarian | If I become vegan do I have to get rid of all my previous clothing... | Sep 03 2007 17:58 (UTC) |

| If you have the means to replace everything and that's what you're most comfortable with, go for it. But I still have some non-vegan clothes and shoes because the harm is already done and i'm too poor to replace every last thing. However, this does not mean that once these things are worn out, that i'll replace them with more non-vegan items. When things wear out I replace them with vegan alternatives. | |||

| Vegetarian | What's your main protein source? | Sep 03 2007 17:50 (UTC) |

| My favorites are seitan!!!, beans, luna/clif bars, and tofu. At home I have a good mix of protein sources, but here at school it's mostly soy-related. Soy milk on cereal, lots of tofu, as well as some TVP/soy burger crumbles and beans & rice. | |||

This quote immediately came to mind: "To me, veganism is an ultimately imperfect but rational decision to repudiate the cruel, ruthless mass exploitation of animals by modern agribusiness and not benefit by unnecessary cruelty and death. The question, in our society at least, is not what is natural but what is least harmful - to animals, health and environment. Sure, eating meat the way indigenous people practised it was 'natural', was necessary for survival (as was/is cannibalism - see Dr Tim Flannery's book on New Guinea), but how many in our society would seriously consider chasing game with stone-age implements and living in a bark humpy? Judging by indigenous lifestyles, veganism cannot be called 'natural', but neither can buying a cellophane-wrapped lump of chemically-laced muscle from a genetically-engineered factory farmed animal encased in a fluorescent-lit supermarket display. What is true in our artificial, technologically-cocooned, sedentary society is that a diet rich in fibre, vitamins, Omega 3 fatty acids, anti-oxidants and phytoestrogens (to name a few), and low in saturated fat, sodium, harmful bacteria, chemical residues and without cholesterol, i.e. a plant-based or VEGAN diet, is much better for human health, takes much less land and agricultural inputs (water, fuel etc.) to produce equivalent food value, and causes, by far, the least amount of cruelty to animals. This may not be 'natural', but it is certainly a lot saner, sustainable and compassionate than the alternative. And if we humans cannot use our gift of intelligence to better our lives and our world, then we do not deserve it." (Thomas Perry) |

| If you don't have much time to cook, you could try making good protein-rich food that can last you through the week over the weekend. For example, you could make a log of this seitan on Sunday, and use it in sandwiches, salads, or other entrees. You can do this with your own black bean burgers or practically anything! If that's still too much, i'd suggest getting some pre-made "burgers", "nuggets" etc. that you can heat up and grab on the go. | |||

| When I was a kid I would slather white bread with margarine and pour some sanding sugar (colored sugar for decorating) on it, then either roll it up or squish it into a ball and eat it. I just started mixing tofu into the hummus that I eat as a salad dressing. If I eat Nature Valley PB granola bars, I have to have two of them. Little packets of jelly with PB, with no bread or anything else. Plain, uncooked quick oats. Shredded coconut out of the bag. |

| Vegetarian | No dairy - but why the mucas? | Apr 16 2007 17:53 (UTC) |

| Bread is fine as long as there are no eggs, dairy, l-cysteine, or honey in it. The mucus is like another "detox" symptom - it'll go away eventually! Like all major dietary changes, it takes some time for your body to get used to it. |

| I haven't tried many but my favorite type is tempeh, I think. I've had seitan twice - once was awesome and the other was really gross. I also love Soysage, and the Gardenburger BBQ riblets are nice from time to time (and they actually have a sandwich with them on campus). |

| Most days I have oatmeal with soymilk, and throughout the week i'll have a few servings of tofu but that depends on the cafeteria's menu. That's about it. Sometimes i'll buy some soy yogurt but I haven't lately. | |||
| Vegetarian | Vegetarian vs. Vegan | Feb 13 2007 20:52 (UTC) |

| Vegetarians usually include eggs and/or dairy in their diets. Vegans consume no animal products. I think your plan is great! There are no real cons as far as i'm concerned. It will probably save you some money, too! | |||

| Make sure you don't replace meat with tons of dairy! Go for a balanced diet. Since you'll be cooking a lot, you can make sure that you get tons of veggies & good whole foods instead of a lot of processed things which'll be awesome for your health and your weight loss. And I definitely agree with whoever said "water, water water"! | |||

| Foods | what to put in oatmeal?!?! | Jan 15 2007 23:36 (UTC) |

| Definitely try it with non-dairy milk! I love using vanilla soy milk but there are millions of other milks you can try (hazlenut, oat, rice, etc.) You can also try a combination of oats, raisins, oatbran, wheat germ, & some brown sugar (muesli). I also love to use agave as the sweetener if I have it around, and I almost always mix in some wheat germ & ground flaxseed. Toss in some berries or other fruit for antioxidents and vitamins or some nuts for more protein. The options are endless, and I always try to throw in my 2 cents whenever people bring up oatmeal since you can pack in so much nutrition when you make it! (Plus it's delicious..) |
