Glad to have you nana! Just remember, don't let "life" get in the way of your goals because you are doing all of this to change your "life" for the better.

Hi, guys just checking in! These last couple days at IU have ben fun, minus the 100 meetings we've had to go to !) Where has everyone gone? lol

What can WE do, to make this forum a lot more supportive? I really want this to be a place that people will turn to for a little pick me up, or a reason to continue on their path. I kind of feel like not everyone is being heard.

Hi guys, very interesting topics.

What did I have for lunch on 6/12, nothing, I was getting my hair braided and it took 10 hours.

6-13. My favorite healthy snack is chips and salsa with kidney beans and corn in it.

Just thought I would tell you guys, I'm going to away to summer school (college) today and I'm not sure how often I will have internet access, but I will check in as often as possible. I hope you all's week goes well.

Wow, very awesome question! I can REALLY identify with #5. I have a closet full of pants with holes in the thighs...

What are your reasons for making a healthy lifestyle change?

1. I don't want to be the "fat friend" or the "token fat girl" anymore

2. I want to buy clothes and actually look cute in them

3. I want to get rid of my chest pains, don't want to die of heart attack at 20 or 30

4. I want to be able to learn good habits now, so I can pass them on to my kids! I don't want my kids to grow up feeling like I do.

5. I want to be more comfortable in my own body

6. I want to  be on Oprah (Okay, well that may be reaching too far, but people can dream lol)

7. I want to show my mom (family in general)  that she can do it too

8. I want to go to my high school reunion looking AMAZING!

Good afternoon all, once again I stuck with 30 minutes of walking.

Today's discussion: I have no idea, any of you have any discussion topics? lol

Interesting perspectives.

But I forgot to answer my own question:

So, do I think achieving my goal weight will make me happy? Well, I used to think so, but now that I think about it if I had lost 40 pounds before and have since gained it back, apparently being thinner didn't make me happy. It made me a little less self-conscious and people noticed my weight loss, but it wasn't enough. I agree that as I go through this transition and become more comfortable with myself, others, and exercise, that process as a whole will lead to my happiness.

Good afternoon all, how's the day gone so far?

I actually got up and did what I said I was going to do... EXERCISE! 30 minutes of walking, now I just need to stay on track with my calories and fat content.

Oh, and the first one to post in the mornings is more than welcome to think of that day's discussion question...

But today's discussion question is ....

Do you think getting to your goal weight will truly make you happy?

Hi guys! Today went alright. I didn't do anything I said I was going to do. This includes waking up at 8:00 and doing thirty minutes of walking as well as binging.

Hopefully tomorrow is MUCH better.

Hi peasluvnhappi and bzb! Welcome to the forum.

tgg I applaud you on working and going to school, my mom is doing that right now and I just don't understand how she does it. Working out back to back seems ok as long as you don't burn yourself out from it.

FROM: gpm55

Just got back into the house after swimming leisurely laps for an hour. It's 12:30 and the roast chicken won't be ready for about an hour and a half, so I had an ear of corn, wrapped in wax paper and microwaved, no butter, no salt. In the "olden days" I wouldn't have dreamt of eating corn on the cob w/o a generous amount of melted butter and salt.  Nowadays it's tasting delicious just plain.

We really are creatures of habit ...

Now to the topic: I have failed numerous times at weight loss attempts. Starvation diet didn't work for the obvious reason: got too hungry.  Slim Fast helped get the pounds off - or at least some of them - for awhile.  But I didn't really care for the shakes and could only tolerate them semi-frozen, trying to convince myself it was a delicious milkshake.  The bars tasted like sawdust to me.  Why it failed: I just didn't like the taste of the products. Atkins Diet: tried it and lost weight big time but gained it back with a vengeance and then some. Got to eat all the steaks and bacon and grease I wanted, but was too carb deprived and started dreaming of high carb foods. Cabbage soup diet: didn't like the soup, was unsatisfied with what was allowed on the various days, didn't feel good and was constantly feeling hungry.

When I hit 284 I looked in the mirror and saw a fat person.  I didn't feel well.  None of my clothes fit anymore. Nothing looked good. So I finally did some honest thinking:  I know that for every 3500 calorie deficit I will have 1 lb. weight loss.  How much did I need to lose?  Oh my God!  I should weigh between 133 and 172, depending on size my frame is.  At 5'10" I think I would be pretty darn skinny in the 130's.  I vaguely remember the mid-150's and checked out the pictures ... it was a good weight for me.  But I didn't look bad at 170 either.  So at age 55 I decided that 170 was probably a pretty reasonable goal.  But the thought of losing 114 lbs. was and still is pretty daunting.

I knew 170 would be a long term goal and long term effort would be required.  I knew I didn't have a chance of sticking with any restrictive diet long enough to even get close to my goal.  And I knew from past experience that the pounds just come right back when you "get off" the diet.  Conclusion: a lifestyle change was the only chance for getting to a healthy body weight and maintaining it.

How to do it?  Firstly I decided portion control was necessary.  It turns out all my portions were way too large.  So I just started eating less, reading the labels to determine what a "portion" really was and mentionally estimating the calories I was eating.  It didn't take long to figure out that eating high fat, high sugar foods = high calorie foods.  So to be satisfied with my portions I had to select some healthier foods and stay away from some bad choices.

All the while, the weight was just dropping off beautifully: 19 lbs. the first month, 12 months in the 2nd and another 12 lbs. in the 3rd month.  Month 4 was a lot slower: only 7 lbs. weight loss ... what slowed me down? my birthday dinner, one fast food lunch at the mall and 3 dinners out - all during the month of May.  Plus I had a bike accident and sprained my food badly ... resulting in a week in bed plus limited activity thereafter.

So those were the first four months.  I started with CC mid-May ... had time on my hands since I was laid up with the sprained foot, so was on the 'net and found CC.  The more I read, the more intrigued I became.

I started learning about nutrition and exercise.  I was shocked to learn I could burn 700 calories in an hour swimming slow laps!  (I'm not very athletic).  (And don't really like exercise, but the swimming in the hot summer months here in Florida isn't bad!) Suddenly it clicked in my mind: if I exercise for only an hour a day I can get quite a decent amount of healthy food and still lose weight!

Pezzle, I can definitely identify with that. I just graduated from high school on May 23rd.  I subconsciously eat while studying. And my mom overfed/feeds me a whole lot.

Today's discussion topic: Many of us on calorie-count have tried this weight loss thing before... but why do you think your weight loss efforts did not work on the very first try?

Well,  I don't think my efforts worked the first time because I just gave up around the holidays. On August 29, 2006 I walked home for the first time in LOOOOONG time, and I started getting really mad at myself. I was sick of always crying about being fat and never doing anything about it. So I went home started planning my meals, looked on the internet for nutrition information of different foods (that's how I found calorie-count) and I was well on my way to starting a new life.

I would walk home from school everyday, walk in the park everyday, eat right, etc. I lost 30 lbs in three months. My mom absolutely could not believe it. Neither could I.  I also hadn't eaten out at anytime between those three months. Everything just seemed so easy, I couldn't understand how I never did this before.  Then the holidays came. I told myself after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years were done, I would get back to exercising and eating right. That NEVER happened. So I've been struggling with getting back on track since January 2007.

I'm hoping that as I go off to college next week this weight loss thing will become a little more manageable given that I will be 200 miles away from my eating buddies (MY FAMILY IN GENERAL). I know there's going to be alot of temptation in the dining halls, but I feel like I wll be able to make smart decisions. Hopefully I will be able to find an exercising buddy there... I am SOOOOO self conscious, it makes exercising in public a no-no for me.

You proobably just want someone to keep you accountable. That seems pretty smart to me.

Just know that

1. You could have done better (I'm sure you already know that)

2. Each second is a new opportunity to make a better decision.

3.  Don't make excuses for yourself.

Well, here's to better days!

I should have made the food groups part more clear. If you eat from each food group you get 20 points for just that feat alone, not 20 points for eating out of each group. SO your calculations should actually be for 120 points, not 180, its not possible to get more than 160 points if you do not meet all the goals for the day.
