Under_my_umbrella, you have nothing to worry about! The worst part of flying for me is boredom! I've been on 21 hour flights and 1 hour flights and everything in between! And I've been on nearly every airline there is interntationally... haven't yet been to Egypt, but would love to! What airline are you going on? Almost all are decent except the ones in the US domestic and middle east. I think the best thing is to just keep yourself busy with music, a laptop, books, bring some good snacks (in case the food sucks), and something that helps you sleep. You can do this! I promise!

Middle eastern food is amazing there, stick with veggies and hummus. They do eat lamb a lot, but veggies aren't too hard to come by, its easier to eat healthily there than in Europe in my opinion.

There aren't that many things that I consider exotic, but Iived in Australia for a summer and ate ostrich, emu, crocodile, and grubs. I ate tons of weird (unnamed) stuff in Hong Kong and New Zealand as well. And blood sausages in England...ewww. Most European food is pretty "normal" so I don't have much else. Eventually I would like to eat fugu (a poisonous fish from Japan)...not sure if I would considering both being vegan and the poisonous thing...

Ah well (old/ older) people really like pictures of their family, like kids and grandkids doing stuff (sports, crafts, whatever). I think I'm giving my dad (who is 60) some photo equipment since he does photography. I'll probably give him some specialty food stuff. I know pretty well what kind of food he likes, but it depends on the person. Also, women usually go for girly things like smelly lotions and bath salts. Idk Books are good if you know what they're interested in.

you don't feel bloated? god my stomach bloats up and gets crampy after like half a pack! that sorbital isn't good for you! also, chewing something and not swallowing anything causes your stomach acids to start releasing and when no food gets down there, your stomach stays acidic and can get uncomfortable.

Yep, I'm the only vegan I know. I know of a couple loose vegetarians, they eat meat occasionally or only some meats...No complete weird hippies like me around! I'm sure I'll have to come across one soon, I go to a uni with 50,000 students!
Health & Support Too much water hurting my kidneys? Dec 12 2007

I'm not sure the back thing is related to water intake. It's unlikely, but the only thing I can think of is kidney stones, but that is waaay pushing it. I'd say the amount of water you're drinking is fine, I drink about 4 liters everyday.
Weight Loss Daily Calories for a College Runner-Thanks for the help! Dec 12 2007

Hey thatrunnergirl,
I'm not sure how much you need to eat and it may take some experimenting to determine the right amount of calories you'll need. I'd say your maintanence may be close to mine because we have sort of similar stats...which is 2400 cals/day. That's without exercise. I'd guess two/three hours of cardio are somewhere over 1000 calories, maybe even higher up to 1500. I have no idea. To gain back those pounds, you'd have to eat even more than this... I'd suggest just trying out eating more and seeing how it affects your running. You'll just need to experiment! Good luck!
Vegetarian vegan= always hungry and losing weight??? Dec 01 2007

I'm so happy that you are trying out a vegan diet! I also wanted to ask if you're eating enough protein and fat. Protein should be between 15-25% of total calories (I aim for 20%) and fat between 15-35% of total calories. I try to hit 15% at the least and stay below 20%, I'm comfortable there.

I know I started out not eating enough food in general, especially foods with fats. It's easy not to eat enough on a vegan diet, so it's all about making sure you get everything you need. I tracked my protein intake first. Then once I stabilized that, I added some fats in with almonds and avocadoes. I tend to be able to maintain weight (and not lose more) when I'm eating enough fat, which is good and much healthier.

But you can actually eat a ton of food, like you said, and still remain thin. It's a very simple diet so its not hard to maintain or lose weight on.

I think it takes a while (up to three months some have said) to see the total "detoxing" affects veganism can have on your body. Personally, I felt a slight change in energy and subsequently got rid of a few health concerns very quickly. It seems like you're already starting to feel the difference! Congrats on your choice!

Oh god, this sounds like me. Last semester I used to not eat on Fridays and Saturday and drink ALL of my calories in alcohol. Needless to say, I was always getting pretty sick and the hangovers were like three day long headaches and nausea. I always think drinking is fine in moderation after eating a normal meal. I think its much healthier not to have a deficit that day than not to eat/ save calories. I hope you feel better!

I'm vegan. I've heard of a few people who are freegan, but I don't think I'd be able to do it! I get sick easily and just really don't think it's always healthy to do this. It's really interesting though, I wish I didnt' have to contribute to the whole word of consumerism. And be better with environmental stuff. But I think part of a lifestyle change is living within the culture and sticking to your guns.

I'm not sure it's possible to buy a computer for less than what you want... But I think toshibas are awesome, I bought a Toshiba quosmio about two months ago and its amazing! No heating pad like you said, its super fast, great screen, and not too heavy. I bought it directly from the toshiba website with all the accessories, I think it's somewhat easier (I'm not sure if it's cheaper) that way. Anyway, I think the Toshiba Satellites are cheapest and my roomie had one that was decent.

Yeah, I hear you! I am vegan and don't eat processed foods, so my parents are always worried and bugging me about things. My dad eats meat (no veggies at all!) and my eats some meat, but is much healthier. When I come home they always ask me if I want something with meat or dairy in it!! I just politely say "no thanks" and proceed to make my own food! Also, eating isn't about pleasing others, you have to do what YOU want to do, what you know is healthy and makes you feel better! Eating something to please someone won't accomplish anything and will only make it harder for you.

This whole thread is just making me feel sick;, just thinking about spiders! I can't deal with insects, especially millipeds! I found TWO EFFIN millipeds the other and felt my chest tighten up so much I stopped breathing ang got chest pains! I had to pick it up in a huge cup from the ceiling and dump it down the drain next to it cause i couldn't deal with the chance it jumped or crawled out onto me....ewwwwww. SHUDDERS: And spiders are only worse! Usually I'll make someone kill it unless I'm alone and I can't chance it, so I'll kill it with a shoe. I have nightmares of them crawling all over me!!

Oh and I want to live long enough to have children, run around with them, and not get osteoperosis or be hospitalized randomly. I would also loooooove to run a marathon and continue snowboarding every winter.
Weight Loss women, what are your goals? Nov 29 2007

Honestly, my goal is to be thin, but firm. I would rather be slightly heavier and leaner, than light and flabby! I'm 5'9.5" and want to weigh around 128 (bmi 18.5)...fit into a 1/2/3. I have big boobs and smaller arms and legs. The worst part is the stomach/ love handles right now so if I can get rid of that, I'll be around 4 again. That of course means I need to be firm and healthy and not just thin!
Weight Loss American size 0? Nov 29 2007

Hey Rastnim, from what I've heard (and watched on youtube), a size zero in the US is a size four in the UK. The thing is, A&F probably keeps the sizing the same, so you probably wear a zero in American sizes. But I have no clue, really. I haven't been a zero since 9th grade!! Gosh I wish... Anyway, I remember you posting about anorexia, and not eating for several days (I think like ten!!) so I really don't think you need to worry about sizes!
Motivation Who decides I should lose weight..........? Nov 27 2007

BMI means nothing...its a ratio of height and weight and DOES NOT consider individual shape, fat, or muscle in a person. Someone could be an athlete and be "overweight" and a flabby person could be "underweight". I think you'd be a lot happier figuring out your body fat percentage and trying to get firmer and look leaner rather than simply weighing less.

 Ummm...tons of stuff.

~ any meat - texture, taste, smell is just incredibley disgusting and sausage and bacon are the worst
~ Anything creamy or dairy based - milk, sour cream, cream cheese, mayo, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, etc - kind of explains the veganism
~ eggs
~ black licorice
~ raw bell peppers
~ cabbage
~ carrots (i force 'em down)
~ apples
~ blueberries - ewww always nasty (i can only force them down like once a month the antioxidants aren't worth it more than that)
~ raisins
~ peaches
~ pie, cake unless its super moist
~ cupcakes
~ another jello and jelly bean hater
~ ginger
~ mango
~ soy sauce
~ canned fruit or veggies - it always has a weird taste to it

I'm sure there's others, just can't think of them right now.

Vegetarian i would like to be vegan... Nov 21 2007
00:04 (UTC)
I havea lot tosay about veganism...I might come back to the post. Right now I'd like to encourage you to really research veganism, amino acids, protein sources, reasons for veganism, omega fatty acids, and whole food recipes. I also wanted to say I know how you feel about your parents thinking you have an ed when you seem to "restrict" what you're eating (which is really the opposite, enjoying the abundance and variety of food). This is hard, but if you show them how motivated you are and start cooking healthy meals around them, they will be much more open to veganism. Feel free to pm me anytime with questions, I absolutely love veganism and helping others with questions and concerns about the lifestyle!
Health & Support How to eat enough calories when you are feeling sick ( flu ) Nov 20 2007
22:00 (UTC)

Hmmm well I don't think it's necessary to eat all your calories if you have the flu. I've been so sick I couldn't eat and just let my hunger cues tell me when I ate. As long as you get back to a decent calorie intake after the illness, I think you'll be fine.

Get better!

You are much more likely to be intolerant or allergic dairy than to gluten. I would try cutting it out for about two weeks. If after two weeks you are still having problems, I would follow what skinnyogi said about celiac disease.
