I will return to browse your comments and make my own sometime this week, but for the sake of weigh-in, I'm at 143, which I find amazing given that I haven't behaved as well as I should have.

That DRATTED scale says I weigh 144 today.  Bah.  But then again, I did have a margarita last night... btw, if anyone lives in Dallas, Manny's has the best frozen margaritas.

I feel a little like a dealer at a narcanon meeting for saying that....  but they are good!  And a margarita with a friend now and then ain't no crime.

Otherwise, all is well.  I am about to go make a whole wheat pasta, spinach and bean soup with my fiance.   I'm also looking at new career plans, and I'm excited for what might be in store!  I love what I'm doing, but I think I need to look at a hybrid opportunity where my current position (I work in a ministry for young adults who don't have the skills and support to transition into adulthood) becomes volunteer and I work somewhere else to actually pay the bills.  My biggest concern is health insurance.  But I think I have a plan!  Hurrah!

Housecleaning.  Dries out hands, firms up muscles.  Treat yourself to some goooood lotion and know it was a worthwhile venture for health in more ways than one:-)

And Jayne, oh people.  People people people.  People who just need to mind their own darn business.  I am sorry you have to deal with the sister who "clearly" knows better than you what you ought to do.  Ironically, I always loved Marie just because she seemed so improbable based on my parents and their experiences with their in-laws.  Hmmmmm.  Good luck with the Richard and his ex-wife situation.  I am living proof that divorced parents with their own social lives involving significant others can still produce healthy (well, as healthy as any other kid) youngsters.

Oh: I'm a believer in water.  If I drink it, I lose. If I don't, I might as well have eaten straight butter.  Glug glug:-)

Oh... I understand your frustration!  Keep it up though-- even when I sit at the same weight for....e....v....er, I do find some comfort in the knowledge that I am eating more healthily now, even if it is a trite piece of knowledge.

Sun, you make me laugh.  In a good way:-).  Good luck with all the house nonsense!  I am trying to convince the fiance that we should find a place that is not his current apartment for when we get married, and I personally seem to have a HUGE nesting instinct and would like to buy something that is tangible, steady, and positively ours.  An apartment seems so transient. The fiance is balking, as he hates committing large sums of money to anything.  Groan.

Also, I had a highly interesting time with my future in-laws.  I do believe my m-i-l called me fat at one point.  We were at a restaurant, and they'd messed up the pizza I ordered with my fiance and f-i-l.  The waiter told my fiance and I to go ahead and eat the mistake pizza and he'd bring out a small with the toppings we wanted.  So, I took a piece.  She looked across the table and said, "don't you think you should save some room for the next pizza?"  Ummm..... She also offered to cut my hair, saying the sideswept bangs are too long and that there are layers in the back (it's beautifully layered, thank you, and was actually recently cut in honor of my in-law's arrival).  She means well, and I'm sure it all just came out wrong, but it was a tad exasperating.

But, to my weight!  I am DOWN TO 142!!  Happy dance ensues.

Ah! I'm back, I'm back! I'm a bum, but I'm back.... I was out of town for a conference, then in town for a conference (will I EVER get to do any REAL work???), and conference number one did not enable me to have a beachy week-- we stayed at my colleague's parents' home to save moolah, and her mom (lovely lady) cooked us dinner.  The only catch was that she considers peas, carrots and potatoes to be the only veggies worth eating.  Sooooooo....  You just can't not eat your hostess' food!

Nanny, I like the thought from Oh that you should hand your daughter your clothes and remark that they are too big for you.  That would mortify me ... if my mom had ever been one pound over 130 in her entire life! We daughters have some vanity going on:-)

And the poundage for today is 143.5.  Whee!

I'm here, I'm here!  I'm still at 146, but that's fine by me.  It's 5 pounds less than I was before I started SB!   And, it's ttom, so hopefully it starts edging down afterwards.

Hi guys!  I'm such a slug.  Between the family drama, moving drama, and getting engaged (!), well, the diet didn't go quite like I'd have liked, but I'm still sitting pretty at 146.

Would it help if, as we report our weights, we went ahead and copied and pasted the chart? Reduce the workload for Karen? Or do you like your workload?

Hey hey!

Well, family drama occurred so I have been in a different city dealing with stress and being taken out to eat at Mexican food restaurants. Each time I've gone out, I've ordered something that looked on the menu like it might have a hope of a prayer, but I've been WRONG!  So, lots of moderation in size but not in ingredients.  And I have no scale.  So, for today, I'll go with my Monday weight, which was 146.  If it has moved dramatically one way or other tomorrow, I'll update. I'm headed home to the land of the stocked fridge, so all should be well dietwise, though all the issues that drove me home remain in high gear.  Blargh.

Hellooooooo!!!  My first p2 week is going pretty well-- I started off with half an apple for two days and then bumped it up to a whole apple yesterday (paired with ricotta the first day and pb the second two days) as well as a piece of rye bread.  Usually, I'd only have bumped it up to the whole apple and not eaten the rye, but I was not feeling up to cooking and got a half sandwich of beef with a giant side salad from Jasons.

I would usually also have done my grocery shopping yesterday since the store has "double" its usual specials on Wednesdays-- its latest ad gimmick is to have their fliers overlap on wed.  Works for me! But I really felt terrible and did not shop.  Fortunately, the big items I want are on this week's flier, so I have until next wed. Plus I'm still stocked on frozen veggies and tubs of tomatoes, so I'm good for a while:-).

And I'm down quite a bit in weight, but I expect this to climb as I'm not sure why it's so low. 143.  It was 147 the day before.....  But we'll go with 143:-)

Hi Jsh!  Thanks for the support!  And I think you might be on to something, Materialgirl. If I were that active, I feel I'd definitely need something more substantial to fuel the exercise machine.  I'm hoping to switch to p2 this weekend and start running again.  I have new shoes ready and waiting (the treads on my old shoes seem to have been left on various roads previously travelled).  I've read many an article saying that milk is the ultimate recovery food because of its blend of carbs and protein, so maybe all it will take is an up in the dairy intake.

I personally don't ever get hungry-- I was consuming more calorie-dense foods but staying in my calorie range for healthy eating before SB, so the volume I eat is HUGE now-- it is sometimes hard to convince myself to snack.  I'm also a big fan of veggies, so I don't feel truly deprived. I can eat a whole thing of frozen spinach straight up:-)--I'm weird like that.

My big issue the first time I tried SB was weakness.  I too was walking up huge hills.  I was at college and lived in a dorm that was literally at the top of a 35 degree incline.  I wove walking up (no, I was not drunk at 10 am) and was winded when I got there... which I hadn't been two weeks previous pre-diet.  I was good about eating my beans and drinking my milk and water, yet felt icky all the way through the 2 weeks.  So I abandoned the SB way, not what I should have done, and continued to gain weight.  Oops.  So I definitely don't want to abandon the SB way (plus, my little experiment last week says that maaaaybe I shouldn't eat corn just yet for the sake of so much more than my waistline) but maybe start in on adding a carb or two for the exercise.  Walking is great on p1, but I've not been able to run, and I do want to get back in form for a half marathon in April.  On Saturday (after day 1 of dancing like a mad woman), I'll be two days ahead of p2, and while I actually haven't had any cravings during this beginning period, I don't want to add the carbs back too quickly and find myself up to my usual tricks.  I am conflicted; I desperately want to have the carbs that would do me good but am doing some of that often-seen angsting over the p2 switch.

Wow Sun, no wonder you're our fearless leader:-).

Today's weight: 145.  Wheee.

I wore a painful set of heels yesterday to a seminar only to find half the group in jeans!  I NEVER wear heels unless I find it absolutely necessary.  Anyway, so besides feeling cheated out of a jean day, my feet ached all day and continue to whine softly, so my running, so often desired and planned, is put off for another day.

This weekend is a huge function known as Dallas DANCE for west coast swing, and it looks like I'll be eating on the run for the most part.  Granted, last weekend was my first p1 weekend, and I decided to treat SB like a friend in college--as strict during the week, not-so-strict on weekend.  I had two cheat meals (well, 2 pieces of whole wheat roti on Friday and a Latin buffet on Sunday for brunch), and the first cheat went well but the second KILLED me.  On the upside, I had no cravings after either, but I also did not desire to eat at all until the next day after the buffet.  And of course I gained back a little water weight.  So, I'm trying to decide whether this weekend will be another place where I shimmy all over the map, sticking more resolutely to whole grains.  I'll be dancing for hour after hour, and a few well-placed carbs might not be a bad idea for that.  I have traditionally found sustaining exercise hard in a p1 eating style.  I also start p2 on Monday (I'm such an SB young'un) and ergo could rationalize adding in a whole grain here and there as well as the need for a few more days of p1 consistency.  I know this is rambly, but I figure you guys would have some similar experiences and maybe even some reflections on them! Any thoughts?

Welcome Materialgirl!  I just started on Monday, so it's nice to see another newbie!  So far things are going great--there's really a lot of flexibility, actually, at least if you're willing to give things a try.

For breakfast (sorry, non-egg-seeking people), I scrambled an egg, put it aside when it was mostly done, sauteed some drained and rinsed black beans with dried cilantro, added some salsa, pushed around the pan a few more times, and added the eggs back in and some shredded cheese.  For that added "Dear God I love avocados" kick, I topped it with two slices of avocado.  All in all, took 10 minutes from start to finish, and was immediately devoured with gusto. This is a dish I'd eaten in a funky diner in Boston not too long ago, and it got rave reviews there as well.

For a non-egg entry to the day, I got a recipe from Kalyn's kitchen for socca that is good, though I prefer less salt and would use  a spice other than cumin. Otherwise, I loved it.  And the chickpea flour was reasonably priced at a local alternative grocery.  You can start with the base recipe and add all sorts of veggies to suit!  http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com/2009/07/rec ipe-for-socca-garbanzo-or-chickpea.html

Well, the scale said 146, but I'm just losing all that water weight at the beginning, so I expect to bounce around in the upcoming weeks.

Today is a little zany-- my colleague forgot to mention we were having lunch with someone, so I went running out the door with only my midmorning string cheese snack in hand and was tortured by McDonalds French fries... Oh, the agony!  But I remained strong and came home eventually and noshed on leftovers from my cooking sprees these past few days-- the pistachio chicken recipe from the original book (so, soo good!) and a portobello soup.  Sadly, I have much soup and don't really like it, but I will not throw good, healthy food out bc I take issue with its taste.  I'll just have to give my bf an extra big serving.....

I actually used a Shere Khan mix today for dinner-- their Chicken Tikka Masala-- and it was pretty darned good for a lazy, no effort meal!  I bought the packet at World Market for $2.99 and added chicken and vegetables.  It made plenty for two with a good dose of sauce left over to top my veggies tomorrow.

I too hope to eventually cook Indian food from scratch, but I haven't yet gotten there!  I wish you luck and hope to share recipes in the future!

I just would like to encourage you to find a new OB/GYN if yours doesn't listen or talk to you.  I spent 10 years suffering from endometriosis with a doctor who didn't want to investigate. I had had this doctor recommended by a friend whose experience with him years earlier while she had difficulty conceiving, and based on her recommendation, I stayed with him hoping that he'd have a good range of options when I decided I wanted to have children.  But as my symptoms became less and less bearable, something had to give, and I switched to a new doctor who is PHENOMENAL.  Within months of seeing him, we landed on the right combination of treatments to control my system and have removed obstructing tissue.  I no longer experience practically any of the agonizing symptoms that I experienced previously.  Granted, that was amazingly fast turnaround, and not all people will have such fast success, but the kind of caring treatment that makes these issues much easier physically and psychologically is so wonderful.  I simply hope that you can find someone who works with you.

My name's Bev(erly), and I'm currently the heaviest I've ever been! Oops! I gained a lot of weight after shifting to a desk job the summer after I studied abroad, and it stuck around my last year of college. Last year I graduated and joined the real world. I've had a rough year, and stress just added some weight. It currently seems no matter what I do/eat, I gain. I do think that walking is the key for me-- it does great things for stress, appetite suppression and all the rest.

My SW: 140, CW: 145 (eep!) GW: 125 Age: 24 (I'm still early twenties, right????)

The plan: packing the lunches, eating mostly fresh produce/meats, cutting out fried foods, walking more.

Also, I broke my arm playing broomball with the youth group I work with, and well, that hasn't helped:-) I was all keen on strength training before that, but this puts any such notion on hold. And now, all motivated, I'm going to go take walk!

Weight Loss Raising Metabolism after Fasting? Jul 28 2008

I haven't yet tried fasting longterm-- the most has been 3 days at the end of Lent. But even those days helped to clarify my mind and remind me of the intricacy of our bodies and the important (to me) mental/physical/spiritual connection.

Of course, I'm the same girl who had McDonald's earlier this week, so clearly I'm not very good about remembering how important it is to feed your body good things:-)

I seem to recall Oprah's doctor-friend, Dr. Oz, pointing out the healthful benefits of fasting a day a week. He didn't comment on the longer fasts.

Someday I'd like to try a longer fast. We'll see.

Ditto to the above. Junk food doesn't trigger my cycles (at least as far as I've noticed), but it very much compounds the lows when they arrive. Conversely, eating unprocessed foods (fruits and veggies, meats and eggs) and drinking lots of water and getting lots of exercise in the sunshine can do wonders to pull me through the rough spots. My favorite mood lifting exercise is a brisk walk at dawn and at dusk. The routine of cooking and exercising is also enormously helpful.

I am the stereotypical chocoholic. I cannot have chocolate in my general vicinity during those precious two days before or it will all magically disappear. The depressing thing is that I don't enjoy it during that time nearly as much as I do during the rest of the month. So, I try to keep it out of my presence and self-medicate with fruit instead. It doesn't kill the craving entirely, but I'm not the type who can say "okay, I'll just have 3 M&Ms," so it works for me. It fills me up and satisfies my sweet quotient. A good cup of coffee also does wonders to satisfy my chocolate cravings.

I'm 5'3," 22 years old and 136 lbs. I'd love to get down to 125-130, hopefully mid-June when I'll be busily looking for a job! I'm one of those muscly people, and at that size I feel happy and move agilely, so I feel it's best for me. I end up in jeans that are size 4 when in that range, and I just happen to like that number.

I love love love the ideas above and wish I'd had some of them when I had my wisdom teeth taken out! I would warn that perhaps cayenne pepper/jalapenos might hurt if they were to get into the area that's recently been worked on....

My staples for the week following were basically yogurt, fruit smoothies, ensure, jello, split pea soup and instant mashed potatoes. If you need something cool and refreshing that isn't fruit-based, a cucumber soup that's pureed with cilantro and salt is really good. I couldn't do clam chowder because I kept wanting to chew the clams, but then the doctor had done a great deal of work to get the teeth out. Depending on how extensive the work is, you might be able to handle it.

Good luck! It ended up being nowhere near as bad as I expected! You'll be fine!

I have to respectfully disagree with ravenlark, at least speaking for myself. 5 pounds can make a big difference, but only if I am losing the right way-- with lots of exercise--because then I'm probably losing more than 5 pounds of fat but adding on some nice toned muscle. And I wear my weight differently than either my sister or my mother, and 5 pounds either way for each of us looks different. But, that's just my experience.

There's always the infamous 3-day diet that my parents recommend. They both swear by it, which does somewhat worry me, but my mom never diets any more and my dad is far too fond of flavor to use it. Both apparently lost a bit of weight with it in the past, though. I tossed all of the foods at the calorie counter once and each day weighs in at about 900 calories. Wowsers.

On the other hand, Weight Watchers did work for me.... I was an exchange student in Belgium one year and gained 25 pounds between my first and third families. My third mom, in whom I'd confided that this whole weight thing was stressing me out, simply had me eat what she ate--only I ate more pasta, she drank more wine. In 2 months I was down about 10 pounds.

I tried south beach and couldn't stick with it. I am MUCH happier here! And much healthier too, I'd imagine!

And again, congrats on the 53 pounds!

Hi there! I hopped off the site for a while but am back! Also a small but mighty 5'3, I weigh 135 and would like to get down to 125. Once upon a time I was 118, but I didn't eat nearly enough then. I can't imagine weighing less than 120, frankly, but maybe I just have larger bones than the rest of you girls... or a bigger appetite:-) Short term goal would be getting to that weight, long term is keeping up this whole running thing I found out I like! I'm even going to run the Boston half-marathon in April, so please wish me luck!

I'm with those who think that people will probably not even notice your relative inexperience, and if they do, they'll be happy to see that you're trying something new and remember when they were you. For what it's worth, the only unwelcome comments I ever hear when I go to the gym are guys hitting on girls who are uninterested. Poor fellows never seem to have any luck:-)

Now, I know that getting into a bathing suit can seem like the horror to end all horrors, but i really love water aerobics. The movement is fluid, but the water provides amazing resistance. Plus, it's cool (temperature-wise), and any mistakes you make are hidden under the blue ripples, as are any problem areas (like my ginormous thighs).

Good luck!!!

Hi there!!!! I checked your profile, and it says that 135 is your goal weight and healthy for your size, so I'm thinking you should be eating more than 1200 calories. I think the allowance you probably saw was what would be needed to lose a certain amount of weight by a certain date. Instead, look at the 2000 it says you burn on a normal day and try to eat 500 calories less than that (1500) and if you exercise, add in the amount of calories burned to what you should eat. So, on a day that you exercise, the amount you should eat is probably around 2000, maybe a little more. It won't be the full 2150 because that would "double count" some minutes as being sedentary and as being active.

Calorie count has a great tool to help you calculate how many calories you burn total. Add your activities for any given day, and the site will show you the grand total of calories burned, those burned while you are sedentary and those while you are active. On the "account" tab, it will show you how much you've burned as well as how much you've eaten if you log your food too!

Have a great day!!

I feel like an orange or two a day is a perfectly good number. You do need 2-3 servings of fruits each day, and a large one is 86 calories. Fruit helps me keep my sweet tooth at bay and generally feels refreshing, so I eat a fair bit of it.

Besides the orange question, I am so glad you are shifting into a long-term phase! Yay for you!
