| Fitness | Lose the Fat before Toning | Jan 26 2009 01:37 (UTC) |

Here's a non-expert-opinion: I lost about 80 pounds of fat and now my bones poke into everything. I'm only now beginning an exercise plan for myself so I can restore muscle and pad my skeleton from bumping into things... and maybe buying larger jeans once I fill out. (^_^) I waited until now to start building muscle, because I really didn't think I could concentrate on both at once (losing fat and setting an exercise regimen). |

I can't drink water unless there's something in it. When I do drink (exercising, walking, sick, etc.) it I have to take it like medicine. In fact, if I had it my way, I would drink absolutely no fluid ever. I hate it! Gag!! I wish I could get all my water through fruits and veggies. You're aiming to hydrate your body, not pop your stomach. :) Listen to your body signals to guide your water intake instead of aiming for 8 glasses. I am "up" to 16 oz. a day. |

Bluh ... I once called the customer service number on the back of the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter pump spray bottle thing... a similar item to the spray cooking stuff... I got right down to business and said "So what is the caloric content in the entire bottle of the stuff?" Nearly 1000 calories and over 30 grams of fat. Not that I would be using the entire bottle at any point (I am not so insensible to assume 0 x 100 = 0 in calorie land), but it is interesting that the FDA may legally nearly "nullify" a food's content based on a nominal serving size. Same thing with those sugar-free pocket mints and candies. For my curiosity and sanity, I would love if "entire-package" info were readily available. |

I love egg whites but don't feel like cooking before my 1.5 hour morning commute. I pack an ice-cold mug of soymilk mixed with a small amount of coffee or OJ. Just an alternative suggestion :) You could also go for some whole-grain, protein-rich toast or bread with nut spread. Have you ever tried almond or cashew butters? Mmm. |

I got the lark and owl terms from a college professor of mine - a morning class that I was perpetually late getting to (pajamas and all). :P He was a great professor and said that he understood how difficult it was for people to transition to morning-ers... but he said "trust me - once you're out there, doing the career thing, it will come naturally. Watch and see." He was so right. I am tired at 10:00 at night - when 5 years ago that would be the "morning" of my wakefulness!
*edit: I might as well mention my college diet consisted of mainly coffee and cigarettes. I was a total wreck. Thinner, but disgusting. I would never bargain for a smaller body by injecting it with constant filth like that ever again. |

Wow... great advice. I have come a long way to go from "owl" to "lark"... so now that I have got that down, it's time to conquer the King Breakfast; Prince Lunch; Pauper Dinner thing. MAN... it's so HARD to eat breakfast, I simply can't stomach food until 10 AM or so, so I'm trying a couple of glasses of soymilk. Protein has always been my downfall.
Thank you so much for your hard work typing this out. |

I think detoxes are often used as an unnatural means to "repent" for nutritional misbehavior. Simply indulge in whole, natural, fibrous foods; move; hydrate; breathe... and there is no need for such extremities. :) But I don't think trying it out to see how it makes you feel would be harmful as long as you don't push yourself physically. |

People will notice your smile, your attitude, your kindness, your wit, your charm. Me - I'm 5'8", and 174 pounds of smiles and confidence. :) If you are 115 pounds and ashamed of yourself, you're going to feel like 115 pounds of crap. Same goes for 90, or 290. I would say more, but I have felt as you do when I was younger and I just had to learn to feel differently as the years went by. So I can only wish you strength to get through it. Looking back on it is the only way I saw myself clearly. |
