YES! Last fall I studied on Semester at Sea, and made a "post-it calendar" each month on my cabin wall. I'd label each day and then draw a picture representing the port or activity that was planned for that day. It drew so much attention from our visitors that I am sure it's being replicated somewhere right now!! TPBM is looking for a job... |

Glazed doughnut... grapefruit instead. It's flu season, so knowing that I'd benefit form the added vitamin C of the citrus fruit made the decision a little easier. Plus, grapefruits are really sweet. :) |

Half-true. When I came home for spring break, my mom had totally redecorated my room in a spa theme. It looks incredible. New bedding, new pictures, shelfing, furniture, and decor. So, I guess that counts? TPBM regularly reads some sort of publication cover-to-cover. (i.e. Wall Street Journal, Cosmo, Women's Health, etc, etc) |

| Fitness | Really bad run - which is better to do? | May 06 2008 22:53 (UTC) |
2 |
I usually try to stick it out for the minimum amount I typically run. For example, I usually run between 5 - 7 miles, so if I'm having a disasterous day, I'll call it quits after pushing for 5. And I try not to psyche myself out too much about the times. I mean just like the bad days, there are good days, too - where an extra mile feels easy, and the speed is up and feeling good. So, I figure that as long as you take advantage of your good days, it's fine to have a bad day as well. Plus, think how much better you'll feel after having accomplished something that you totally didn't feel your body could handle! Also, running, I feel, gets better with time. I had a saying during cross country: get through the first, get faster on the second, and get ahead on the third! Good luck! :] have fun! |

| Foods | Luna Bar VS Special K Bar VS Rice Cake!!!!!! Which one would you suggest?? | May 04 2008 21:22 (UTC) |
8 |
Go for Luna. Not only are they full of nutrients, but if you drink a little water with them, you will defs not be hungry for a few hours (if you're like me). One bar contains 100% of your daily requirement of Vitamins C, E, B6, B12, and Folate; 25% of A and Chromium; 35% of Calcium; 30 of Iron; 80 of B1 and 2, and a ton of other nutrients - too many to list! Personally, I choose the Iced Oatmeal Raisin and Dulce De Leche flavors, as they have the least amounts of fat: 3.5 and 2 grams, respectively. All the flavors are low on the Glycemic Index, high in fiber and protein, and moderately low in fat. Yes, they are kind of high in sugar, but so too are the Special K bars - which will not fill you up, and do not contain many nturients. I look at the Special K bars as junk food, since they are high in sugar, low in fiber and protein, and high very few nutrients. Without a doubt, choose the Luna bars! Or, Fiber One Oats & Chocolate bars are super good too. Yes, they're also high in sugar, but they have almost 20% of your daily requirement of fiber!
Good luck taste testing! :] |

Hey guys, Sorry for not responding sooner; I was actually out of the country for the past week and a half! Anyway, I guess I can see where you all are coming from. Granted, my interpretation of the texts was slightly different, but that's what makes these works so timeless: their messages translate differently - and most personally - to each individual. Either way, I totally understand your readings, and hope that you all can understand mine as well. To illustrate my original postulation: I assume you're all familiar with Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Well, after reading the work numerous times prior to enrolling in a college course which cited it as part of the course material, I foolishly thought I knew the book inside and out. On the day we discussed the work, my professor brought up a totally different interpretation of one of the early city scenes between Jay and Nick - it was so sexual, and absolutely mindblowing! Immediately, I wondered how I'd missed some of the details he'd pointed out that day. Now, I've learned to almost never assume my interpretation to be an exhaustive conclusion of the author's views. So, please accept my sincere apology if my original posts seem to convey otherwise, and were offensive. Unfortunately, I was taken a bit off-guard by some of the seemingly malicious respones I'd garnered, so I mirrored the tones, and became quite defensive. Life is a learning experience. Luckily, I recognize the importance of admitting my own flaws. Thank you for sharing all your thoughts! :] |

Original Post by nomoreexcuses: Once again, I've stumbled across those who cannot understand the basis of my argument; no where did I imply that the two works were not related to self-absorbtion and indulgence, rather I conjectured that the pre-adolescent cultural acceptance and desire to wear makeup may not in fact be based in a self-righteous undertone. Truly, some parents want their children/teens to wear makeup (I use "wear makeup" as an all-incompassing phrase to imply use/exploitation of other similar pampering rituals) whether for social, societal, or even religious purposes. The point is simple: an adolescent's use of makeup does not necessarily imply his/her disobedience or otherwise attempt to "sell-out" his/her parents. Rather, there are instances where the basis of the teen's desire is rooted in learned behavior derived from his/her parents' wishes. In "easy language"... Sometimes Mommy and Daddy want little Sally to wear makeup because it will help her to be better accepted among her peers (those with whom she attempts association), and thus, in life. Whether or not we wish to believe it, outer appearance is amoung the most prevelant factors in determining one's view of another, as evidenced in this post (calling me an emo kid implies that I dress, and therefore am assumed to act, in such a way that contrasts the poster's own view of normalcy). Want proof? Okay, imagine you are getting ready for a job interview.... Don't you try to look like those with whom you wish to work? Don't you attempt assimilation into their (assumed) corporate culture by wearing a suit or a tie, or possibly even researching the company dress code to better fit the external norms? If not, you should. The point is simple: people are constantly judged - and divided - by their outer appearances. Perhaps there are parents who acknowledge this phenomina, and believe that their son/daughter's use of makeup and the like will promote better assimilation and success. Hold on one minute! What about self-expression?! Don't many use makeup products to display their own self-expression. Yes! And this process actually proves my point. Ever see a group of similarly "self-expressive" youth )(or otherwise) congregated in unison? Yes, oh yes, you definitely have. Hmm... doesn't that witnessing suggest that the members of that group similarly grouped with other "self-expressors"....? Well, yes, it definitely might. Heather Leigh: I apologize for your missreading of my original post. I did, in fact, want to hear your opinion, and my comments were in no way representative of a condescending irreverance towards acheiving that goal. I apologize if you believe they were. Once agin however, I must ask that you discontinue your slanderous remarks which you so fluidly direct at me. Calling me an "emo" does not strengthen your argument; but you knew that. I just want to let you know that I respect your opinions - whether or not I may agree with them. Additionally, it should be noted that while I do not like to promote this stigmatic social division/definition, my stylistic choices would most certainly not be confused with those of an "emo". |

"And 1984 is related because of the children in 1984 being spoiled brats that sell out even their parents if they have a chance." ...I didn't know that wearing eyeliner urges one to "sell out" their parents. Perhaps some parents actually want their children/teens to don makeup, which would conversely expose that the children wearing it sell-out their own wishes in favor of those of their parents. Hgielrehtaeh - Please don't send condescending messages to my inbox. Additionally, while your assumptions may suggest that I have not read either of the aforementioned classics, I actually have written award-winning theses on both works. On the topic of being self-absorbed and self-indulgent: perhaps you should look within, especially before accusing a complete stranger of the imprudence of which you so display with your own haughty slander. |

Original Post by tombrokaw: I'm going to agree with brokaw. I mean, those are great books, but they have little relation to lowering of the "makeup age" of young girls. In a side note: how was either book about "being self-absorbed"? Seriously, I actually want to hear your interpretation. No, really, I do. I guess it's all about being by ducks these days... we're heading heading closer and closer to a hyrbid of Walden Pond and the Catcher in the Rye. |

laurdie I feel your pain. I'm a soph, and really can't seem to land a summer internship in this downturning market. Suffice it to say, I'm qualified (as I'm sure you are), but as you know, it's not what you know... it's sho you know. what bs. so anyway, I called up one of my job prospects (again) today, and the recpt finally said, "oh yeah, we're not accepting interns this summer." aka this is something she could have told me a month ago when I applied. ...and let's throw some logs on the fire: my neighbor (who's a moron... seriously) just rec'd two JOB OFFERS today. obviously, she's being loud and obnoxious about it. I mean, why not? "I'm going to be living in my very own apartment this summer! I got offered TWO jobs, but I think that the SECOND one is sooooo much better for my long term career goals" whatever. she's actually really dumb. so, to the point: keep up the search, and good luck. if all else fails, start your own. I'm an e-ship major, and let me tell you: women in their own businesses get mad tax cuts and benefits. not too bad. plus, you're young, so if you get an idea just run with it. Good luck with your search! Jobs blow |

my mom and I love doing this: buy a small bag of kettle corn, and add a little bit of it to the airpopped corn. That way it's not totally unhealthy, and there are little surprises in there too! If you're more of a savory person, then oregano and pepper is really good. Either use a little pam or some water sprinkles to make the spices stick better to the popcorn. Good luck! Have fun! |

| Foods | Very Important Question! | Apr 04 2008 21:00 (UTC) |
|
Yes. and no. If by vegetables, you mean strictly vegetables, then no. But, if by vegetables you mean through a vegetarian diet, then a BIG YES. Many people are vegetarian (myself included) and can definitely promote, if not maintain, a thoroughly lifestyle, perhaps even more so that omnivores. The key to a vegetarian diet is the iron and protein intake. Be sure to eat plenty of beans, legumes, and the sort. I also don't consume dairy or eggs very much, but you happen to like those types of foods, then low fat yogurt and egg whites will definitely go a long way in maintaining proper organ function and health. Just be careful with carbs because generally vegetables are comprised of carbohydrates (the good kind, don't worry), so it's very easy to overload on the side of carbs, and forget about protein and fat namely. Additionally, if you do decide to lead a vegetarian lifestyle (which I hope you do), then you will realize the many differences between each type of vegetable - green or not. For instance, spinach is a prime source of low calorie protein/iron. Broccoli is great for making you full (and possibly full of gas for many people). Tomatoes are refreshing and filling as well, while carrots spike your blood sugar level (if you are vegetarian and do not consume a lot of processed sugar). Once again, let me stress that it's all about what's right for you. Once I've been maintaining this current lifestyle, I've actually trained my body to accept these foods (i.e. I no longer suffer too greatly from gas from foods like broccoli), and have essentially barred myself from eating certain other foods. Since not eating dairy, if I do drink a little real milk (instead of soy milk) with my coffee (out of necessity), my stomach will be sour and ache for a while. The same effect applies to blood sugar and carrots. As previously mentioned, carrots can elevate the blood sugar levels of someone who consumes very little processed sugar. If a typcial sugar-eating person were to eat a carrot, no, they would ont be filled with instant energy. Rather, this example applies more to others. So, if you do maintain this lifestyle, you'll begin to notice how your own body responds to all the different types of vegetables and foods you do eat. Good luck on your journey and feel free to ask me any questions! :] |

| Weight Loss | Is 50lbs by mid June Realistic? | Apr 03 2008 02:32 (UTC) |
|
Let's see... April - June is 2 months. Okay, I did cross country from September - November (3 months), and lost almost 30 pounds (to the point of being underweight). I was in a healthy weight range to begin with, but once I started running (had never run competitively before. in fact, I'm a softball player, so the most distance running I'd done was a mile...tops), I also adopted other behaviors. For instance, many days we'd run between 7 - 20 miles, so at lunch I would be extremely careful about what I ate because I knew that I'd be carrying it with me for the run. So, due to its lactic acid content I cut out dairy entirely (which, as a vegan, I actually do now anyway), which contributed greatly to weight loss. So to the point... while I was not trying to lose weight (in fact, my teachers thought something was wrong, and kept scheduling one-on-ones to make sure I was being healthy since that was a HUGE amount of weight to loss for someone my height (5'2")), I ended up doing it by participating in SOMETHING I LOVED, and for which I was willing to give up things like ice cream, dairy, cheese, etc. Courtneyes, my advice: find something you love doing; an activity for which you are willing to give up certain vices simply to excel. If you partipate in something you love, you'll do it more, look forward to it, and try harder while doing it. Often, I would come home from our runs, and hurry through my homework so I could run another few miles on the treadmill at midnight. FIND AN ACTIVITY YOU LOVE, and ENJOY LIFE. The rest will find its place. |

Canada - I agree that the mets will be a tough team, not sure that they'll take it all though. But yes, their 3-4-5 rotation is the best in the league. Every year, people pay too much attention to the offense. I mean look at the 2007 Yankees, injuries aside, the rotation is what killed them. So, that said, HillPitcher - the Phillies rotation is wayyy to weak. Yes, they've got the power hitter meat of the line-up, but the meat only reaches the plate 1/3 of the time (3/9). Additionally, Arizona's main problem last year may have been solved in their aquisition of Upton. Supposing the kid steps to the plate, it'll be D-Backs wildcard, Phillies on the links come October.
But that's just me... any other thoughts or refutations? |

thank you stanbob, but I defs woulda had that in the bag. I am sandwiched between two very athletic brothers, and played on my older brother's little league team for years. I made the all-star team every year, and finally switched over to softball (I was kicked out of the town softball league because my hitting, and throwing speed posed a threat to the safety of the other girls... believe it or not!) when my age bracket moved up to the regulation size field. I play in college, and in hs I was the starting ss for every game since frosh year. Career total of 5 strikeouts; 656 batting average; over 800 slugging %, more HRs and intentional walks in one year than my entire team combined in all four years. Also played Jr Olympic softball for years; best record we had was 81-9. :) Yuppp. Oh, and I recorded the quickest home to first time of 2.9 consistant on both my hs team and jr olympic teams. Okay, sorry sorry. Not trying to brag. Just trying to prove that I've had experience in the baseball/softball realm. When you're around a sport long enough, you begin to learn the ins and outs of it. That, and Baseball Tonight was my fave show for the longest time. In middle school, people actually called me baseball |
