Vegetarian protein! Jun 22 2007

Egg whites are definitely the way to go to get high protein with little fat (depending on what you eat it with and how you cook them of course!).  I also use protein powders - if there is a wholefoods near you, take a look at their generic brand - I use the wholefoods vanilla soy protein which has very low carb content.  I don't always have time, but if you do, blend it with fruit/ice/your choice of milk and it will keep you going for longer than just the powder and milk.
Vegetarian Dominoes Pizza Jun 22 2007

Whether or not it is really vegetarian depends on you. It is likely that the person making the pizzas has been handling meat and there is always the possibility that some meat product may end up on your pizza - either from food handling or even from the pizza cutter.  So the vegetarian classification really depends on how strict you are with these things.

There is also the good old rennet issue - if this is something you are trying to avoid, it shouldn't be too hard to find out if their cheese contains rennet.

lifethyme on 6th has a great grocery selection as well as prepared foods - they list the ingredients for all the prepared foods too which is really helpful.  i'm still a big fan of wholefoods though.

i'm partial to a refreshing glass of vodka with soda water and fresh lime (no flavorings) - i believe a shot of vodka is in the vicinity of 60-70 calories.

do your measurements and then every week or two do your measurements again...you might find that you are losing inches but not pounds (which would likely indicate muscle gain).

Maybe try cutting carbs? Instead of a chicken or turkey sandwich try a salad with grilled chicken or turkey. Sounds like your eating and exercise habits are good anyway so a bit of carb elimination might just do the trick.

I'm in a similar position to you - 5'0, 121 - ideally would like to get down to 107-ish but would be very happy at 110 - my weight one year ago. i bought a fabulous pair of jeans, just before i put on weight and my goal is to zip them up again!

At 127 lbs i had a great month of low carb high protein and lost 7 lbs. Plateaued last month but have further increased my protein and doing better this month already!

Good luck!

ashley3183 - there are a lot of "non-dairy" products that contain casein (you were close!) which is a milk protein as is whey. many soy cheeses contain casein. i have found, but would still suggest checking labels, that if something is labeled "vegan" it should be casein-free. so if you are looking for dairy free cheeses, look at the ones labeled "vegan".

my wholefoods has a couple of varieties of vegan cheeses, although they all tend to have some form of soy which i am currently not eating so am currently cheese free :o(

does anyone know of good non-dairy, non-soy based cheeses??
Weight Loss when to weigh? Jun 04 2007

I recently asked my boss this exact question - she has lost almost 90 lbs in the past year (Weight Watchers).  What really matters is weighing yourself at the same time each time you weigh yourself to keep it consistent.

I go to the gym after work each day and use the scales there. I have tested weighing myself before and after my workout and found a difference of about a pound (!). So now, I weigh myself after my work outs.

Thanks all - the support really helps! And makes me think about things too...

hattierod - good suggestion, i should start going back to drinking vodka with seltzer and fresh lime instead of beer, as well as less calories i tend to drink less of them too. And maybe on a beer day I should head to the light beers rather than regular.

Cheers!

i like counting calories just to see if i am right about what i should and shouldn't be eating.  but as i'm trying to do high protein/low carb it's really handy having that feature in the food log too.

i also use the activity log to compare my calorie intake against what i'm burning.  i find it useful - in my first month i lost 7 pounds and i have slightly gained then plateaued in the past month but started to change my workouts so hopefully will see a change in the coming weeks.

I know a couple of people who did this, lost weight while on the diet and then gained more than they had lost once they finished it.  I don't trust these kinds of diets, you're probably better off doing a changing your eating habits and producing long term results.

Vegetarian shut them up! May 31 2007

i became vegetarian at 12 and now at 27 people still ask why - although the older i get the less cynical people are when they ask the big question.  i've always given people the choice between the short answer and the long answer...i'll give you both! for the record, both answers are true.

short answer: i just don't think it's necessary for all people to eat meat.

long answer: in Year 7 our science teacher wanted us to dissect a rat. i didn't think it was necessary at that age to do the dissection and i knew already that i wasn't heading into a scientific career. she told us that any vegetarians in the class didn't have to dissect so i put up my hand and said "I'm a vegetarian". i am also true to my word. so since then i've been a vegetarian - and i never had to do a dissection all through high school!

good luck! :o)

i love mexican food but make sure at restaurants i always check whether the beans are vegetarian or not - a lot of restaurants have lard in the beans.
